This is my go-to lunch spot, as I work a few blocks away. There are a number of good choices nearby, but the sandwiches at this bakery are SO GOOD. I always order them on one of their baguettes (rosemary is my favorite), and they are huge! A half sandwich is the size of a (largish) normal sandwich elsewhere. The pastries are to die for, so I often (always...) order something small to snack on while I wait for my to-go order. I could try a new pastry every day for the next year and never have the same thing twice. So many mouthwatering options! Also, the employees are always so nice! read more

Excellent selection of Swedish baked goods and cakes. The display case is large and really impressive. The service can feel a little cold, but the ambiance and quality of pastry makes up for it. read more

A good Scandinavian Bakery in North Queen Anne/Fremont area. My Husband and I had seen this bakery on our weekly trips to the grocery store. We decided to stop in last Sunday and were pleasantly surprised to see how big it was (From the from it looks quite small but the building is quite deep). I was excited to see not only Scandinavian specialties but Germanic, French and other favorites too! They do cakes, pastries and wonderful breads! You can also get coffee (they serve cafe Ladro coffee) and relax in their small cafe! I asked the server how often they make their breads she said they make them fresh, everyday. Thats my kind of bakery! Thank you Byen Bakeri! read more

Cafe and bakery featuring the best there is of scandinavian baked treats: danish patries, semlor, shortcakes, marsipan (almond paste) covered cakes, pies, rye-bread, swedish "limpa", lunch sandwiches. Ahh, delicious! read more

They have a great selection of tasty food. I always have a heard time deciding what I want because it looks so awesome. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Yes, it can be slow during peak times but really, there's only so fast you can get people through a bakery line and it's not so bad. The only problem I have is that they seem to attract a really cranky clientele. This isn't their fault at all, but is something that detracts from the experience and I am not a foodie or picky person. I once had a guy scream at me because there was a chair at my table (already there when I sat down) that he thought was blocking the aisle, then threw the chair across the restaurant. That was the most extreme, but customers just seem cranky all the time. What's wrong with all of you? Go here, get some tasty pastry, sit back, have a croissant, and chill. read more

Great bakery. They don't know how to make a London Fog though. The point of the London Fog is the Earl Grey tea along with the steamed milk and some vanilla. They just used some black tea and steamed milk. Couldn't taste any vanilla if they did use any. Buy the baked goods and get your drink elsewhere. read more

Beautiful pastries. Clean. Friendly! The turkey cran cream cheese croissant sandwich was to die for.

Most of the other reviews here seem to be focused on pastries, but I am not a pastry person. All I really want from a bakery is a really great baguette. The baguettes at Byen are exceptional, particularly the sea salt & rosemary. I will certainly be back on a regular basis. read more

What can I say but excellent!!! The food was spectacular and I love the small town feel. They are busy and for good reason, but the service is still warm and inviting!! Highly recommended! read more

We've Loved almost everything from here that we've tried (& we've been quite a few times now :) ). Highly recommend: maple bacon pastry/coffee cake? all croissants, especially the almond one (royal i think ?) can't remember the names but the two kinds of jalapeño rolls that they sometimes have near the register, rosemary bread that is baked on certain days. Baker definitely puts a lot of work/love into his products. We will be back again and again to try the rest! read more

killer almond king croissant. everything looked great. truly believe it can't get better than this. have to give them the real test by checking out the baguette. can it compare with clark street baguette at central market it DTLA??? I'll let you know! read more

I work out next door to this little gem of a bakery so it's arrival caused me some mixed feelings.....would I be subjected to the smell of fresh baking pastries while I was trying to work out? Anyway, as the build out continued I met the owner and learned of his long history in the baked goods industry and I figured this would be no "cookie cutter" bakery if you'll pardon the pun. This bakery is in the tradition of old European bakeries where each day has new options including interesting breads and other goodies. I am a marzipan snob, and will judge a bakery solely on it's almond croissants and other almond pastries. I hit the jackpot with Byen Bakery, the owner is also a marzipan lover and his almond pastries are STUFFED with almond goodness. Not just croissants, but something called a "Kringle" which can only be described as a marzipan "pizza" and I am in love with this pastry. I ordered a pumpkin pie and also a Kringle for my Thanksgiving dinner and the pumpkin pie was perfectly spiced and a wonderful flakey crust. I have to work out a little longer and little harder now that Byen is open but I can satisfy my marzipan cravings and if you love almond pastries, get yourself over there. read more

Pretty decent baked good. Kind of pricey but it is Queen Anne so it makes sense. The people are really nice and the service is really quick. But, the seats aren't that comfortable and not that desiring to stay there and eat. The place is really small. If the seats were more comfortable it'd be great to sit and and study. read more

We ordered a large full sheet marzipan cake for my mother's memorial from Byen Bakeri. The owner who is also the baker spent a lot of time with me asking what kind of cake I wanted. The cake was beautiful, tasted great (not so sweet, as I had requested) and studded with Norwegian Flags. My mother would have been delighted. read more

A bit of register shock. $52 for 8 pastries. These are good, but not exceptional, and certainly NOT worth that price. I'll stick to other bakeries that have fair prices and equally good or sometimes better pastries. My last visit to Byen for sure. This was a very negative experience and quite unexpected. read more

Happy to have found out about this place, even if it took 4 months. I really like that there is a huge selection and that the stuff is just a little bit different. There were also several savory pastries, and that got my attention because usually I feel that there is precious little available in most places unless you want everything sweet. Also, I am a sucker for poppy seed things that aren't muffins, and there was a delicious puff pastry filled with them here. My son approved the baguette: the inside of it was more fluffy and soft than most, but the crispy crust was perfect. read more

This is a great place to go when you have a serious sweet tooth. Princess Cake is my favorite!

Byen is one of my "go-to" bakeries. The folks there are friendly and often offer yummy samples. The pastry and cake selection is pretty vast and are always wonderful, as are their breads. The baguette in particular is close to perfection. Great option for homemade baked goods. read more

Michelle and the crew at Byen Backeri made our Red Velvet wedding cake this past weekend. We were out-of-season, and our wedding wasn't large enough to justify a standard cake order but Byen went ahead and baked everything from scratch just for us. The cake was so moist, beautifully finished, and delivered with zero issues whatsoever. It was a joy to work with this kind, and incredibly considerate bakery for our big day. read more

When you walk in for the first time, the presentation of their pastries is amazing! Were you to imagine a perfect pastry, those at Byen Bakeri fit the bill. One problem I had was making a selection. The second problem I had that is that each pastry is enough for two servings. My bride and I purchased to different pastries, then split them so we could try more varieties. The flavoring was excellent on both. The flavors were subtle and layered, making eating them truly an experience. We will go back! read more

i accidentally stumbled upon this place while awaiting my reservation time for Canlis. i needed to use the restroom so i thought i'd buy something small to take home and use the facilities while i was at it. to my surprise, i walked in to a proper, awesome bakery with rows of delicious looking eats. i chose some salted caramel dome shaped pastry that had a salted caramel custard inside. the pastry was light and the custard was nice. with the addition of salted caramel on top though, it became a bit too sweet for my liking. still, a good pastry overall. read more

Perfect tiramisu. Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Yay!

Went for lunch and treats today. Sandwiches are huge and very yummy. Bought a few treats as well for dessert. Also very good. Quick, friendly service and a clean bathroom as well! read more

Bought a marzipan cake for my birthday a few weeks ago. The cake looked great + the marzipan was delicious! Unfortunately, the cake itself was very dry and not tastey at all. They are on the right track, but definitely need to improve the marzipan cake. Also the staff was not very helpful when it came to discussing the cake options. Again, a good effort here but improvement is needed. read more

Still wonderful. Small quibble: wish they would make labels, but they say that the selection changes too often to have them. How about just the main regular choices (if there is such a thing) We both had pecan custard pastry and a really good cup of drip coffee. Very nice waitress, even though place was packed at Saturday lunch. As they say, once you try scratch, you'll never go back! God Jul !! read more

Byen Bakeri is awesome. Huge selection of fresh-made delicious pastries and breads. I've been back several times and have not been disappointed in anything that I've purchased. This Scandinavian bakery is a real gem and once you have been to Byen you'll understand why it truly deserves its Yelp ratings. read more

Looking for a special birthday cake? The Princess Torte at Byen Bakeri is as good as it gets! The traditional Swedish colors were a hit for my Seahawks loving husband. The entire company of foodies at the party declared it was the best birthday cake ever. It's a little more expensive than other cakes, but worth it for a special occasion. read more

My daughter wakes up on her 8th birthday and decides she would really like a lemon cake. In December. I thought I would make a few calls and tell her I tried but failed- then low and behold I found Byen. The nice folks there found a little white cake and turned it into a 4-layer lemon cream thing of beauty within hours. It was also delicious and very reasonably priced. The bakery itself is a lovely space and everything in the spotless display cases looks yummy. I plan to return for coffee and a kringle ASAP. read more

I admit to being biased as far baked goods go, but this had to be my worst bakery experience yet. There were no signs or prices on anything, so we had to ask questions about lots of stuff. I was delighted, yet suspicious (because this is not a French bakery), to find they had some huge almond "croissants," even though they looked a bit overdone. After paying $5 for one (one!), and having a bite, I got a mouthful of grease, icing, and a bit of almond paste. I pulled it apart a little, and it was pretty much the same all the way through. That was not a croissant. That was a greasy icing football. I also picked up some slices of cake. I thought the slices were pretty darn small, considering the price, but everything was pricey there. The carrot cake was really nothing special, a step up from what you'd get in a supermarket. Yeah, I said it. The chocolate ganache was ok, again, nothing special there either. How can you go wrong with chocolate? The other thing I tried was their sausage roll. I wasn't totally expecting it to be reheated in a microwave, considering it's a bakery, and they know very well what microwaves do to puff pastry (ugh), but they did, so I ended up with limp pastry around a mediocre sausage. Y'know, the kind that tastes too much like a hot dog. At that price, I was hoping for one that tasted like a quality sausage, something along the lines of Uli's Famous Sausages. I thought their cakes looked pretty sad. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but you just see better in French bakeries. As far as the staff goes, they seemed to have been sucking lemons before we got there. One particular staff member was terrible. She clearly became irritated by all the questions we were asking, but there were no signs on anything. She rang my stuff up, then just left it on the counter close to her, where I could barely reach it, and never offered me a bag. Then I discovered she gave me the wrong cake. I'm going to stick to French bakeries for French baked goods. read more

The most delicious Scandinavian treats in Seattle! They also make the best princess torte. This bakery is definitely worth the visit.

Cheesy jalopeno breads are my favorites. The bread has the perfect amount of chewiness. The other favorite are the Kringles, they are perfect for potlucks or group events. read more

Friendly and helpful staff. Delicious Limpa bread! I'll be returning for lunch real soon!

Such a good bakery! Knowledgeable and friendly bakers and beautiful pastries, breads and cakes. Anything lingonberry is a must try. I can't go here anymore because I found out about a gluten allergy I have (ugh) but I miss this bakery so much! read more

I was surprised to learn about this bakery (open since Oct 2013) in Seattle Met, since it is only a short walk from my house. It's on a somewhat overlooked stretch of Nickerson, and bigger than it looks from the outside. Being a bakery and all, I thought they might be running low on goodies since I was stopping by only an hour or two before closing, but there was an excellent selection of treats. I bought a variety of Scandinavian pastries to share with family. After tasting the couple I'd picked up for us, I was regretting sharing. Light, fluffy, fresh, delicious. Not inexpensive, but far better than the expensive cupcakes we're all guilty of buying. Can't wait to return. read more

The spinach quiche was fabulous and the blackberry coffee cakey thing was to die for. I should have asked for the espresso...their drip coffee was not strong enough! I even left with a nice big pastry for my daughter's house mates! Best mom EVER! read more

the Kringle was wonderful; flaky, full of almond paste, the best I've had in Seattle or anywhere. Buttery but not overpowering. All the items for sale and the breads had a wonderful creativeness to them. I only knew the bakery existed from an article on how they are one of the best bakeries in Seattle in SeattleMet Magazine. I agree! When we ordered a piece of Kringle and coffee to sit and enjoy at one of their nice tables, they asked if we'd like it warmed. Yes! Excellent service, and nice people. read more

I really like this place, the breads are really good from what I have tried so far, and the pastries are spot on. What others have said about parking is true, this is in a building that fronts Nickerson and which has no parking. Street parking is always dicey, and more so when SPU is in session, so plan on parking a little out of your way, but take the walk as a chance to get more delicious stuff from behind the counter. It is always best to support local and independent stores when you can, and Byen makes it very easy to do. read more
