Went here for dinner for our first anniversary. The food was phenomenal, I had the lobster Mac n cheese and my husband had the T-bone. The salad bar is great with lots of choices, and everything was fresh. The cream of mushroom soup was fabulous and tasty, not overly rich. My husband had a shrimp cocktail with jumbo shrimp, and the moscato I had was nice. My only complaint is the small booth we had, which felt cramped and in a high traffic area, but we didn't ask for anything special either. read more

We went with great expectations and ordered one of the recommended dishes which was the fillet of swordfish and the Thia BBQ Chicken. The swordfish was extremely dry and no taste, the Thia bbq chicken did not have much of a Thia taste. We asked for a knife and Tabasco sauce to be add a little flavor. Well we waited for 5 minutes to get a knife, finally I got up and went to an empty table to get a knife. After another 15 minutes the waitress finally brought the Tabasco sauce and said sorry I forgot. We were so discussed about the whole experience we asked for the check, paid and left. Explained everything to the manager on the way out and again we received an apology and a 15% discount. Discount and apology don't add up to a good experience. read more

"Butcher Block"...sounds great for vegetarians, right? Actually, it is! I have been here twice now with a group. We sit in the bar area - more relaxed atmosphere and lower prices. They have a good selection of beers and good service. Lots of tasty appetizers. I used to enjoy going here. My boyfriend and I took my mother there for a belated Mother's Day. Very disappointed with the service tonight, one of the appetizers we were told they were out of, but they brought it anyways, then said it was the other appetizer that they were out of. Then my mother ordered a cheese quesadilla, she got a chicken cheese quesadilla, that tasted like a bad rotisserie chicken. My husband and I often travel from our home south of Albany to Montreal. In the past we frequently stop at the Butcher Block restaurant in Plattsburgh. The last two times however have been a disappointment. On a night featuring prime rib, we were told it was sold out, only to hear 5 munites later another waiter being told they were almost sold out and get the order in quickly. When my husband questioned our waitress, with no apology, she responded "I thought it was gone". Another time we were with family visiting from France and the waitress we had could not open the bottle of wine. Today on our way back from Montreal we stopped for lunch. Then headed home. After 2 hours of driving, I realized I left my wallet. I called and asked if they could overnight it to me at my expense. The person on the phone said they could not do it and the manager I would have to speak with would not be in till the next day. My wallet had my divers license, passport and credit cards. What annoyed and amazed me is that there was no way for me or anyone else to contact a manager to resolve this today. Apparently no one within that organization understands the concept of management and its responsibilities. Left with no alternative, I was forced to turn around, drive 2 hours to get my wallet then preceed to begin my 4 hour drive home again. It seems like over the years the level of service has fallen dramatically, so much so that I will not be returning here again. read more

I was in town staying at a nearby hotel and this place was walkable so we gave it a shot (ignoring the bad reviews.) First off, my beers were terrible. Tasteless and flat. We ordered the fried pickles BUT I didn't see any pickles in them... you're literally just eating batter. Worst fried pickles ever! My burger was plain, dry and also tasteless. What's not to love about Butcher Block? Look, this place is exactly what it is, and nothing more. Yah, the center room is dark, but that's nice when you're sitting at a bar. The service is genuine. Sometimes people forget things, but when they apologize and have a great attitude about it, I will let it slide. Don't any of you talk nasty about my salad bar. Very disappointed in how we were treated today at The Butcher Block. We walked in & were directed to the patio by a waitress, she informed us that the dining room didn't open until 4 (it was 3pm). After sitting there for 10 minutes we had to go request menus. During this time another couple sat, and were greeted before us, after we had requested the menus for the patio tables. Having waited another 10 minutes with no service, I again, got up & asked the woman who gave us menus if they had table service. She was visibly upset with me for bothering her, and very aggressively told me she was on her way. We all felt so uncomfortable after that interaction that we decided to bring our business elsewhere. This is a great place to go for lunch if you are a fan of salad bars. Butcher Block does a great salad bar with soup, salad and bread. Generally I will fill up on the salad bar and take my meal home for dinner. They have traditional American fare- sandwiches, burgers, steak and the like. The food isn't out of the park amazing, but its pretty good. They are in a really great location, right off the highway, so if you're cheap and hungry its a good stop. The service is average like the food, and the too dark interior. Not so bad as to avoid, but definitely not a destination spot. read more

I've been to this establishment a few times and I like the food and the service. My family enjoyed it too. One of the times I had the escargots and it was alright, I did not expect them to already be de-shelled, that's part of the fun of eating snails, pulling them out of their homes and devouring the goodness that lurks with in. I've gotten the whiskey chicken, and that was alright. The main thing this place has is the soup and salad bar, which is pretty good and you can get it whenever as long as you order an entree. I found this place to be very chill and with a cool decor. The booth in which we sat in was inside a brick structure and it was just fun to be at a different place that was not trying to be modern but rustic. The food was good and the bread was especially good. I got the Chicken Philly and it was very flavorful and a big portion so come hungry. We came here for lunch and we got the salad/soup bar as part of our meal. I made a salad and they had all kinds of toppings and items so I enjoyed it because it was well stocked and everything looked fresh. The last part of the salad bar was the bread section and they had this amazing wheat honey bread that was to die for so I had plenty of that. I have been going to the Butcher Block a few times a year for decades. It is a great place to go for lunch. The sandwiches and salad bar are very good and consistent. I especially like the Rueben. It's messy, but good. If you order a sandwich, you get soup and salad bar included for only a few bucks more than just the salad bar. The items on the salad bar are usually fresh if you get there early. If you are late for lunch, the items are sometimes mixed together from diners dropping one item into another as they build their salads. The staff are friendly and attentive to customer while maybe not as much to the salad bar. The place is rarely crowded at lunch except for the Xmas holidays. Dining there for dinner is another story. Once you wait for your table and fight your way past the overly crowded bar or salad bar, both bottlenecks, you will find slightly over-crowded dining areas; too many tables for the space. The staff are often too rushed and the food is a crapshoot. One reviewer complained about the fish tacos. Really! What did you expect from a STEAKHOUSE this far from the coast? They don't do seafood well. You shouldn't expect that. But you should be able to expect a good steak. You might get one and you might not. The quality of the meat is not consistent. The meat is often overcooked. The vegetable sides are often cold and flavorless. Their ribs, smothered in an overly sweet sauce, tasted like sauce, not pork. I have given up on thinking anything but a high end steakhouse can cook pork of any kind. I have also given up on the Butcher Block for dinner. They have a couple of meeting rooms for large and small groups. My experience at lunch with a small group was good, since we ordered off the menu. With a large group, the service was good, but as with most large group dining, the food was generic and cooked to please the kitchen, not the customers. Stick to lunchtime and you won't likely be disappointed. read more

Great service, and pretty good food. The salad bar is what you expect of any salad bar, til you see the bread bar section. Pewter plates, several fresh selections of bread, fresh churned local butter. This part put the salad bar a bit above average. The entree foods were all tasty. Ordered the mustard sauce ribs, rib eye steak, prime rib, garlic sauce mussels, sweet potato fries, Salmon of all styles; all of it was mouth watering. Selection of local beers and the knowledge behind each one gives them more extra points. It is rare to find barkeeps that actually know the tastes, origins, and background of each beer. The wait staff is fantastic. Patient, fun loving, and always willing to to the extra mile for the patron are hallmarks of good customer service. I even asked some of my waiters about the schooling of the kitchen staff, which they promptly asked nearly every cook and chef, and came back with in depth information about the cooking institutions each came from and recommendations of culinary art schools. I have yet to order a burger here personally, however the friends and family I know that have give it a thumbs up. Definitely a fan here, and will be back anytime I'm in the area. read more

After some initial confusion at the door (we wanted to sit in the bar area and eat, for a more casual experience, one girl said that's fine and started to put a couple tables together in bar area. Another girl came up and said no, you have to go to a table in dining area... Really enjoyed their food when visiting the Plattsburgh area. We did a take out dinner due to COVID. I noticed people inside but well distanced from each other but preferred takeout . All the food was fresh and hot. When I told them we would not use their salad bar during COVID even though there were plastic shields around it, they brought me a fresh salad that had been made in the kitchen. This place rivals good Montreal steakhouses. The waiters are always friendly, the steak is excellent and you'll love the variety of drinks. Unless you're between 18 and 21. In that case, just stay in Montreal. The salad bar is pretty good, and for some reason American cottage cheese tastes much better than the one in Québec. Very odd. But in a tasty way. This is another favorite place to go with co-workers when the boss is visiting us (and paying for dinner). They have a wonderful salad/soup bar which usually fills you up so that by the time dinner comes you might as well tell them to wrap it! I haven't tried any other steak besides the prime rib and wasn't to impressed with it but I have pretty high standards for my steak. Last time I went I got a filet of sole that was stuffed with crab meat and hazelnuts which wasn't to bad it was an interesting combo, one co-worker got the butternut squash ravioli and recommended it. Brides and anyone else planning an event DO NOT use this establishment! They will give what will seem like good choices for food then when the event happens give you crap for the meal. Bait and switch at is horrible finest! They ruined my daughter's wedding reception with the dish they served, it was supposed to be Beef Wellington, when we complained because our own dishes were not anywhere near the dish they had presented at the tasting the management said " well that is a hard dish to serve to a group". Then why did they offer it as a choice! Oh so they could charge us thousands of dollars and then serve what the guest described to us as "boiled liver"! They also said that no one had complained during the reception. We talked to several close friends that told us the meal was awful and they would have sent it back if they were paying for the meal but since they were guest they did not feel comfortable complaining. Please don't subject your guest to this, don't waste your money, don't set yourself up to be embarrassed on your special day! My wife and I gave this place a shot after not patronizing it for quite some time. Now I remember why we haven't been back for a few years. We both ordered steaks medium rare. Her filet and myself the New York sirloin. Not a stitch of salt and pepper were used on the steaks and they were both medium well. The side of green beans were literally the equivalent of two bites. Paying over $100 for two meals and they're skimping on veggies? Sadly, the frozen mass produced French fries were the best thing on the plate. We won't make this mistake again. read more

I have to say by far the best beer and burger I've had!! So this is our normal stop when traveling back from Montreal it's only 20 mins from the border and WELL WORTH THE STOP!!! The service is fast the food is delicious and fresh, I had the loaded potato skins along with the burger of the day, the bartender was amazing!!! She was fast, friendly, and very knowledgeable of the menu. They have an outside patio that opens up in May. If I lived closer I would definitely be a regular!! We were sent here by the desk clerk at our motel. Awful! My wife had a steak which was fatty and overcooked (she sent it back and the replacement was still pretty well done, but......), soggy vegetables and a really sad salad bar. I had the mussels in white sauce which were actually served in a thin splash of white wine and were essentially tasteless. They were served without a bowl to put the shells in as well.
