We were on the way to Canada and had a night halt at this small town. it was a weekday evening, and this area was deserted (did not know that their main street [Cornelia St] had all the food chain restaurants) The restaurant is very old but keeps the old charm intact. They have been in business for 60 years and claim their customers are pretty close to being family. Arnie's upstairs dining room almost feels like a relative's formal dining room. coming to food which was the worst part. * Gingerbread: I am not an expert on Expert on Italian food, but gingerbread was never like this. they just kept it in a toaster and cheese slice and that's it... see the photo. I felt like I was eating a big cheese piece on normal bread - 0/5. * Shrimp Scampi- so they just brought boiled spaghetti with shrimp... IMO, it was not cooked at all, they might have tossed it in a wok, but nope, it was not edible at all. Upon asking, all we heard was - we make it like that. We returned it. * Hot Turkey Sandwich: considering all the food we got, I guess I am satisfied with the sandwich... I took my daughter and a friend to Arnies as the winter break began. This restaurant has some well documented history and that seems like a good place to try. Please note the dining room is up 21 steps( after hip replacement surgery not an easy task but made it.) Lisa was our server and seemed to be servicing the dining room by herself and did a great job of keeping everyone happy. We ordered the sampler which had Fried Calamari, Raviolis and mozzarella sticks. The appetizer was super hot and delicious. We ordered Veal Scallopini Marsala, Lobster Ravioli and Pasta Primavera and all three entrees were hot and perfectly cooked. Not complaint about the taste or the portion sizes. The offered bread along with dinner and to finish the evening we split one dessert amongst three of us. We tried the chocolate mousse cake which was Three layers of vanilla and chocolate mousse with a cookie bottom. This desert was rich and enough for each of us to sample. So all together a good dining experience and would recommend Arnies and certainly dine here again. read more

Service is awful. I don't know how the food is they closed early. And they were rude when they turned me away. I worked in the hospitality industry for 8 years. We never closed early. And if we had, we never would have blamed it on the customer. There New England at its best, and New England at its worst. Arnie's Restaurant is New England at it's worst. No matter, how many recommendations you get for the food, don't go there. I don't care how long they've been in business. Arnies needs to go out of business. They have lost touch with what matters. This totally bums me out because I've been dining here since I was a kid (I'm 58). It was always considered a "fancy restaurant" at that time. I've let other issues go when we've dined here in the recent past, but this time I cannot. We sat at the bar downstairs, and after a few minutes we were served a drink and offered menus. We ordered our food at 5:55. At 6:23, our server called to the kitchen over the intercom that he needed a salad (my husband's). At 6:55 we still hadn't been served our main course. When we asked another server, she checked the point of sale and said, "It should be ready soon. The order was placed at 6:23." Circle back now to when we gave the server our order, which was at 5:55. That means the server didn't put our order in until just shy of 30 minutes later. I can handle mistakes. They happen. What I cannot handle is a server who cannot admit his mistake and then proceeds to make us feel bad for being upset about it. We aren't fast drinkers, but you shouldn't need to order a THIRD beer before you finally get your order. When I tried to explain why we were upset, he said, "I don't want to hear it." He attempted to rectify things by not charging us for anything, but the damage was done. We will not be going back. Now to get back to my other experiences here that I previously "let go"... if you make a reservation here, make sure you call again and confirm, because they have lost my reservation before. If you are going to a show in town, make your reservation several hours before you need to be at the show. Their kitchen can't handle the number of people that they can seat at one time. The downstairs bathroom is absolutely disgusting at times. I reported that I went in to a clogged toilet and the server just waved it off. read more

On the way through Plattsburgh heading back home after a trip to upstate New York, we decided to stop at Arnie's for dinner. The atmosphere was great - different for what you'd expect, but quaint - everything else topped that tenfold. The service was phenomenal, and the food itself was absolutely on point. I would highly recommend the Italian Sausage and Broccolini Stuffed Ravioli. Well worth the $16.50 price point. Their homemade meat sauce has the perfect tang to it to help complement pasta. My fiancee and her sister got a small mushroom pizza and fettuccini alfredo respectively and had nothing but good things to say about each and every bite! You can tell the food is fresh and prepared extremely skillfully. The homemade mozzarella sticks were probably some of the best we had ever had - night and day compared to frozen store-bought ones. On top of how amazing the food was, the photos along the wall near the bar showcase the history of Arnie's as well as the family background of its owners. It's one thing to have a go-to chain as a dependable option for some quick grub, but supporting local restaurants and shops, even when spending a bit more money, is usually very rewarding! If you're in Plattsburgh looking for a place to eat a meal, Arnie's should be at the top of your list. If we're ever in the area, we absolutely plan on going back. read more

Arnies is a typical upstate NY home town style restaurant. The ambiance and decor are old, even the staff has probably been there for years. But what an unexpected delicious experience. Bread and tomato sauce are how I measure an Italian restaurant. The bread was good and homemade and the sauce was PERFECT! Service was friendly, portions were good, prices were reasonable. I will definately go back for a good Italian meal. We had canneloni and veal scallopini, chiati and carrots cake. Dessert was so good too - made locally. read more

Came in this afternoon and sat at the bar. Friendly waitress immediately told me about the four lunch specials they had from 11-4pm. I opted for the vegetable lasagna special. A generous portion arrived quickly with two slices of homemade bread and a fountain soda. Lasagna was tasty and homemade, filled with tons of vegetables and three cheeses. The sauce was delicious and had a little kick to it. Bread was light and great with pats of butter provided. Excellent lunch for $7.95. Highly recommend. read more

The majority of our party enjoyed their meal. With being said, I wouldn't recommend the shrimp scampi. It has whole chunks of garlic and just really lacked flavor for me. Skip the garlic bread with cheese because they just slap a piece of cheese on it. The salads are good as well as the blue cheese dressing that accompanied it. My impression of the food at Arnie's: comparable to Chef Boyardee. The food all tasted frozen or from a can. Prices were way too high for the quality. I work at a fine dining Italian restaurant where our entrees range $20-(homemade lasagna) - $40 (lobster with homemade sauce over homemade pasta). Our desserts are all baked by the owner. If the prices were family restaurant prices I wouldn't be writing this review as quality would match face value. Maybe I went on a bad night where their good cook had the day off. Food and prices are great as always. Not sure if everyone is having a bad day, but the staff was less than friendly. The individual who answered the phone seemed annoyed, especially when I called back to ask about parking accommodations due to construction as I was not quick enough to ask the question before he hung up. The female who cashed me out was very condescending when I was unaware of where to pick up the food I had ordered. Apparently you should just know that before 4 o'clock you do not pick up your orders upstairs anymore. We love it here. We have been patrons for almost 40 years, our parents loved it here and so did our grandparents. I proposed to my wife here 36 years ago and we eat here every time we come to Plattsburgh. Very family oriented dining, nice Italian menu, friendly wait staff that have been here for years, the owner is usually on premises helping wait tables, and they have carry out. The food has a home made taste and feel and the portions are generous. Prices are mid range so I rate the overall place at a 5 since it has that "old fashioned" restaurant ambiance. Smelled horrible when we walked in. Huge stair case to get to upstairs dining which was not favored. Pizza was thin and ok. Best of the fine experience. I got manicotti and it was not manicotti. It was drenched in sauce that tasted horrible and I don't know what it was. Wasn't tomato or sauce or even marinara sauce. The cheese stuck together and was quite un appealing. The fettuccini Alfredo was very creamy but you could tell it was powdered cheese as it doesn't dissolve. There was no garlic an it was very heavy on the cream. There French fries were the best part sadly and they weren't that great Was very expensive for such crappy food. Oh and the bread they bring you is home made tasteless white loaf which they bring you a whole loaf and it gets wasted trust me. It's gross and tasteless. There garlic bread is just that with garlic and it's not worth the additional 3$ trust me. read more

Since 1951. And NOTHING has changed. At all. Not really a good thing if you're looking for upscale Italian food. Pasta and sauce dominate the menu. It's OK, solid "Eye-Talian" food and good for families and locals who've obviously been going here for generations. Hard to knock that. What a marvelous place. Arnie's staff is very congenial and food is excellent for portions. I had the fried calamari and cannelloni along with garlic bread with my date. Great food. Calamari could have been better but it was satisfactory. My other friends both had pasta dishes with garlic sauce and sausage. They said it was great tasting. We didn't make it upstairs but the downstairs was clean, had a nice bar and cool atmosphere. I found Arnie's to be very welcoming with good food and I would go back again. read more

The fooooood oh the food!! It was more than edible, it was not that bad! This place has looks of an old-time 1960s-70s Family owned Italian eatery with the flavor of an Olive Garden! All kidding aside, this place is not that bad! It's been in business forever, the selection is wide and very tasty AND there's a bar to drink your sorrows away at. I had the vegetable lasagna and cream of broccoli soup (BOTH Italian staples) and I was kind of satisfied. Everything was great until we were forced to eat upstairs because of no seating availability on the lower lever. The stairs went up for what seemed like forever and with me being in a wheel chair, the only way they could get me up to our table was by putting me in a meat elevator in the kitchen! Yikes! Went there and had the lasagna lunch special. Lasagna, bread, and a soda...Not bad for under $7. The lasagna was okay...no spice or anything. Just a monotone flavor. The slices of plain white bread were a little weird. You would think an Italian would have fresh hot crusty rolls with some good olive oil for dipping. Not a few slices of white sandwich bread with packet butters? Our waitress was brand new(first day) and she did a great job. I kind of felt bad that the other waitress kept feeling the need to correct her in front of us an other patrons when she didn't do something to her liking. They should just let her do a day of "shadowing" another waitress instead of berating her in front of other customers. I left the poor girl a 35% tip. Hopefully it found its way to her. read more

I have never been to a more disappointing restaurant, and I don't make such claims lightly. As a former server, I am as understanding as possible in a restaurant setting. Half of my order was lost in the shuffle. When I asked for the missing food, it took 25 minutes for them to bring out burnt-to-a-crisp garlic bread, at which point my noodles were cold. I asked if they'd be able to warm up my pasta. The waitress mumbled something under her breath and chuckled as she walked away, bringing back my pasta microwaved to a dry gummy mush, followed by the owner. The owner proceeded to yell at our entire table, expressing that we were making his life difficult and being disrespectful because I wasn't eating the food as is, before stomping off when I tried to explain my empathy regarding the situation. We went to Arnies because my brother loves the lasagna and we were celebrating his 50th birthday. A party of 8, i had requested to be downstairs as my mother is disabled, i was told they could not do it. After arriving we received meager service and waited to long for our drinks, at this time we ordered. Salads were fair sized. Dinner was a whole other story, the lasagna (5 servings) was topped with tomato paste, as was the chicken parmigiana, the Alfredo was thin and both had no real flavor. The meat sauce on the spaghetti was very bland and the sausage tasted over boiled. We cleared our own table before the cake came. That is when we received the check and asked to leave, because they had overbooked their tables and a 10 top was already there. We surely will not revisit. read more
