Have been here a few times and the food has always been great. Have had the salmon and the fish and chips and all have been excellent. The reason for the lower rating is the service. They are consistently very slow. Yesterday we waited over an hour for our food and the restaurant was nearly empty. So disappointing because the food really is so good. The views from the inside are so nice and you have a great view of the water and dock. If they can improve their service it would be perfect. read more

My husband and I ate at the Mariner Father's day. First of all, the outside of the entry way is so nondescript and uninviting - just blah - no colors to draw you in. We sat down in the all white from head to toe dining room - again no color whatsoever, nothing to quell the loudness of the dining room, no curtains, no plants and only spots in the ceiling - how about some hanging lights to make it more cozy and not like a sterile operating room. Paint the walls a soft color instead of white. Colored tablecloths or placemats maybe? I ordered the calamari which was inedible, tasting like a Michelin tire. There was no salt and pepper on the tables. I also ordered the Caesar salad with separate dressing on the side so thick that it had to be spooned on. This salad was uninspiring. On a good note, my husband ordered the garlic, butter and caper shrimp and pasta and it was delicious! Our server, Alexis was a delight and very accommodating. Took 45 min from us ordering until our food came and they didn't even bring our side salads first. The waitress never refilled our water. The food was excellent. Our party had the beef and fungi, the salmon, the shrimp with pasta, and the coqui st Jacque. All were excellent. The atmosphere however detracted from our overall experience because the music was too loud and the acoustics were cavernous, definitely could hear most other customers' conversations as there was nothing soft on the walls or floors to dampen the noise. The renovations and remodel done to the restaurant are fantastic! The food was also absolutely delicious! A different spin on traditional Coquilles St Jacques, filet, NY strip all cooked perfectly. The cocktails though? We were definitely disappointed. Especially when the highlight of our night was to be drinks with friends. The lavender mojito was far too sweet, with not even a hint of lime with a slight minty taste and one tiny mint leaf as a garnish. No muddled mint or lime in the glass. The old fashioned was just a whiskey on the rocks with a few peels. No taste of sugar nor bitters. We were unable to finish it. The watermelon marg? Disappointed to say the least. It was just artificial flavoring in a rocks glass, instant heartburn. We will definitely be back for the food but we'll have to pass on the drinks. read more

Admittedly we had high expectations; the parking lot has been packed since it opened so we thought it would be outstanding. The inside is lovely with stunning views of the lake and marina through a wall of glass. Service was adequate though rushed. Silverware is rolled into napkins which our waiter literally tossed onto the table. My order of wild mushroom pasta had no wild mushrooms, unless baby Bella mushrooms are considered wild. The dish was bland, over sauced and pricey for pasta that was not homemade. My companion ordered salmon with asparagus. He was brought a long slender plate with a tiny portion of salmon, about a 1/2 cup of mashed potatoes and 4 asparagus stalks. The other couple with us had fish tacos which they assured us were very good and seemed to be an ample portion. Because of the view, I would go back to the Mariner, but only for drinks or coffee. read more

This is the second time eating here with our daughter and family while visiting in Plattsburgh. This time was as good as the first. The adults thoroughly enjoyed the GF calamari appetizer. I wanted to try the curried lamb but only one portion was available. Our daughter got it due to it being Gf. She let me taste and it was a good, smooth curry. My salmon piece was huge and delicious with a lovely rice pilaf and fresh green beans. My husband chose the fried cod. The two children, 6 and 1, ate pasta with butter and fresh Parmesan and fried chicken strips with skinny fries. They loved it! Very generous portions for a child price. We arrived early, 4:00. Great food, great service and great atmosphere! We visited on a Saturday evening and were able to snag a couple seats at the bar. (Busy summer season requires reservations for a table). Started off with a passion fruit cosmo (absolutely delicious) and the calamari and beef carpaccio. Both appetizers were on point. Perfect breading and fry on the calamari and the carpaccio was so tender it melted like butter. Just as happy with our main entrees, and the conversation with the bartender (who turned out to be one of the owners) made for an enjoyable meal and we will be returning again soon (but planning ahead and making a reservation). read more

The Mariner Bar & Grill was one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. My husband and I ate dinner tonight after we got married. Our server so kind and wanted to make our wonderful day even better and he certainly succeeded. I did not drink but my husband did and they gave us a drink on the house for the special occasion. We ordered the calamari appetizer with aioli and it was delicious. For entree we both got the 8 oz Filet medium rare, cooked absolutely perfect. Mine was topped with sautéed onions and compound butter of the day which was Greek inspired. It was accompanied by a whipped mashed potato and green beans. We opted for dessert and were not disappointed. Our first time there and will definitely be going back. Thank you to the staff that made our night special. read more

The newly renovated restaurant and bar was the perfect compliment to our date night. Atmosphere was cozy as we had a window seat and our server (one of the owners was gracious and welcoming. Our wine was a 'healthy' pour; our meals excellent! In particular the scallops resting on individual beds of mashed potatoes flavored with bits of pancetta were perfect. This was the absolute worst steak I have ever ate, the NY strip was so bad I ate three bites and left. My friends with me ordered the Seafood pasta that was supposed to have shrimp and lobster for 29$ and it had no lobster. When we asked the waitress she went to the back and they were out of lobster and didn't offer to add scallops or extra shrimp just acted like the price should stay the same with three shrimp and no lobster. I give The Mariner 3 stars for the food. Our fare was very good. Beef with Fungi, Coquilles St Jacque, Lemon Citrus Shrimp and Citrus Salmon were delicious and nicely presented. Our server wasn't aware if there was a special on the evening we visited. Other than that she was adequate. The real reason for the loss of 2 stars is the fact that management has never sat in the dining room and tried to carry on a conversation or hear their server with the music playing. The acoustics are terrible. The sounds coming from the ceiling speaker nearest to us arrived first, to be followed by the same notes/words from another speaker and followed by the same from another. This all created a jumbled noise. There is zero sound dampening in the dining room. Patrons we're leaning over the tables to talk to each other. Our server turned the volume down (a bit), but it seemed as though it was to no avail. This is an easy problem to solve. Leave the tunes playing in the bar and turn it off in the dining room. Also, a simple briefing of the staff before each shift on special offers and any recommendations they may make would go a long way. Exterior of the building needs some work, but the interior was quite charming. Cocktails were creative in theory, but fell a bit short on execution. We got some very rubbery calamari which was a bit off-putting. When our entree's arrived, it was also a bit of a mixed bag. I had a delightful plate of grilled scallops over puréed potatoes with pancetta, my friend had a very well done steak (strangely the waiter also never asked how he wanted the steak cooked) that was covered in a delightful compound butter, and some solid though not special fish tacos. My meal was sublime, but my companions were less thrilled. The staff shortage is hurting everyone right now so I rated them 4 stars. My family and myself ate dinner here on Saturday, August 8th. We had 8 people total. The hostess was very accommodating seating next to a window overlooking Lake Champlain. Most of us ordered the Filet; however, when my daughter was served her Filet it was obviously a much smaller portion than what the rest of us received. This cut of meat was not even close to 7 oz. I'm not sure how the chef could even begin to send this out, given the other portions were significantly larger. The bill came to about $400. As we were leaving, the owner never once thanked us and never once came to our table to see how everything was. This is the first bad experience we have had here. I hope she sees that customer service is paramount in this business. read more

I went there for the first time last night. The menu had a nice variety, but seemed high-priced. I ordered blackened salmon which came with two sides. I opted for mashed potatoes and the vegetable of the day which was carrots and green beans. When my meal arrived, I was surprised at the portion size. While the serving of salmon was okay, the mashed potatoes was maybe 3/4 of a cup, and the vegetables maybe one large soup spoon full. In retrospect, I should have taken a photo to do it justice. I paced myself to eat very slowly so I didn't finish before everyone at the table. No bread. No salad. $20 for the entree. I could have eaten everything in 5 minutes. As for the other three in my party, they ordered Roasted Red Pepper Penne alla Vodka with grilled chicken ($19), Shrimp Scampi (about 6 shrimp with a large bowl of angel hair) $22, and the Valcour Francaise with fried chicken $21. Drinks: Carlsburg - can - $6, Johnny Walker Black w/Coke - $8 (2 of those), White Russian - $9.50, Apple Martini - $11. No salads, no bread, no appetizers and no desserts. $134.46 with tax, before tip. Food tasted very good, but in my opinion, WAY overpriced. I'm not a big eater, but if I were to go again, I would get a salad, an appetizer, an entree and dessert too. And for the record, those drinks weren't tall--just standard hi-balls. Lastly, it's noisy. Hardwood floor, lots of glass windows and open layout makes it an echo chamber. read more
