Having worked in the hospitality and travel business for over four decades, I'm pretty picky. I can't remember ever being impressed by a hotel restaurant. Bleu is a rare exception. Located in the Courtyard (Marriott) Hotel, only a stone's throw from Lake Champlain and close to the center of Burlington, VT, the restaurant sits just off the lobby. I made a dinner reservation and we was seated by the window with a view of the park with the lake beyond. Off to a good start. My Dirty Martini was spot-on. The perfect balance of Tito's and brine. Only missing the 'bleu' cheese olives. I often order a second appetizer as my entree. My starter was carpaccio that was outstanding. The microgreens were a nice touch. The mussels (appetizer) that I chose for my main course were small in size but ample in portion and were the perfect choice for me. My husband chose the cheese platter for his starter. It was disappointing. Two slices of bleu cheese. Should have been three different ones for $15. And no VT cheddar? Not much imagination here. His Steak Frites was OK; the quality of the beef could have been better. We shared the spinach watermelon salad which was fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall, we liked this restaurant and will return. read more

Overall a nice spot to have breakfast if you are staying in the hotel but not sure I would come if I wasn't. Service was really great! During a recent weekend in Burlington, we stayed at the Coutrtyard and were looking for a dinner place. Instead of walking in the cold, we decided last minute to try Bleu. There was a sign in the lobby that was advertising an oyster special between 5 and 6pm....so that was the hook! We started with a dozen oysters...then snagged another dozen. Excellent! Our main courses were the burger and fries (positive reviews) and the arctic char (absolutely delicious). We finished up with some really good ice cream. Our server was fabulous. The next morning, eggs Benedict and fries rocked the house. (The fries were REALLY good!). Considering it's in the lobby of a courtyard Marriott, it's definitely more upscale dining. The Bleu restaurant is in the marriott courtyard close to the waterfront in Burlington. While staying at the courtyard over a weekend I ate there twice, once for breakfast, and once for lunch. The restaurant calls itself fine dining. I think that's a bit of a stretch. For breakfast I had the classic 2 egg breakfast with scrambled, home fries, sausage, and toast. It was just that. Oysters seem to be a big thing in burlington, although it's on a lake. In any event they were 1/2 price so I got a 1/2 dozen and herb fries (rosemary). Both were good. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. I brought my mom here for brunch on Mother's Day and they should be ashamed of themselves. First the bar was not even open so we couldn't order drinks. We got eggs benedict and it was disgusting. The english muffin was burned to the point of being black, the hollandaise sauce was broken and disgusting - it's an insult to hollandaise sauce to even call it that. The poached eggs were hard and the service sucked. So disrespectful to all mothers to phone it in this poorly. Charcuterie board: Yum! Loved the pickled carrots and daikon, which was a unique element on the plate. I also liked the honey comb and slightly spiced crackers. We stood at the hostess station for awhile, finally a older( blond, grey haired) lady came and asked us how many, then, she took forever to seat us. Needless to say, she was not friendly! We finally got to order and then it came out, everything was wrong. My husband ordered a Breakfast sandwich with bacon, it came with sausage, potatoes were boring, no flavor, although they look good. I ordered the two eggs breakfast, scrambled eggs with cheese that I did not get, and I had to ask three times for toast and three times for jelly. I did like my ham and tomato juice. Bleu Northeast Kitchen inside of the Marriott was incredible. The service was flawless and our server has a wonderful energy. The atmosphere is relaxed and there was live music, 2 guitarists playing in the lobby, providing smooth background music to our dinner. The food was made to perfection with every dish. The Brioche bread with maple butter, simply not enough of it! The chicken dinner, perfectly tender with great flavor. The carrot and mushroom sides, taste buds heaven. We even were able to order mocktails straight off the menu, which we greatly appreciate and love seeing that offered. I can officially recommend Bleu as a great option for your dinner. This was an excellent dining experience. I was hesitant at first because it's listed as a seafood restaurant, but really they have a good balance of everything and seemed like it should have been just listed as American. My hubby and I ended up coming here twice because we enjoyed it so much the first time. The wait staff was great and very attentive (except for refilling water, you have to ask for that mostly but they were down to minimal staff because of the holidays). The space is dark and cozy and makes you want to take your time while you eat. They have beautiful large windows that you can see the NYE fireworks from when they shoot them off (unexpected bonus for us when we booked a reservation for our second meal on NYE). The drinks are great. The maple Manhattan is on point. Spirit-forward and not too sweet. The maple comes from the cherries that are soaked in it so it's not overwhelming in the drink. I'm not a huge fan of maple but really enjoyed this drink. The pomegranate Paloma was also good but I recommend ordering something with bourbon to fit the mood of the restaurant. The food was so good. The reason we came here twice was actually because of the wedge salad! A salad of all things! It was the perfect combo of crisp, crunchy iceberg lettuce, amazing homemade ranch dressing, bacon bits, tomatoes, and avocado. What's not to love? I highly recommend this dish and it was just as good the second night too so it wasn't a fluke. The cauliflower soup was good but very rich. The lamb pasta was wonderful. The mushroom pasta was good but was nothing compared to the lamb one. I did not like the burrata, but that was just a personal preference. The flavors were good. My husband enjoyed the scallops. Highly recommend this restaurant. It's pricey, but the quality of the food is worth it. I recommend splitting things to try more. read more

Most shocking experience I've ever had going out to eat...or attempting to anyway. I made reservations for breakfast at this restaurant for 9:45 on New Year's Day. We arrived a few minutes late and upon arriving there was a very large party exiting. We held the door for the elderly individuals and parents with little ones and then proceeded up the stairs to the restaurant. We arrived at the hostess station at 9:50 (our reservation was for 9:45). We waited a couple minutes for the hostess to greet us. When I told her we had a reservation at 9:45 she responded "oh, you were late so we gave your table to another party." I mentioned again that our reservation was for 9:45. She stated we were 10 minutes late (there were 3 of us and we all looked at our phones to check the time). It still wasn't even 9:55 yet! I mentioned we were holding the door for a large party and she immediate responded with "you were holding a door for 10 minutes?" To my surprise, I immediately mentioned we even waited at the host station for a couple minutes for anyone to greet us. To that she replied "you didn't have to wait more than a minute or two." She mentioned she could seat us at 10:30 and that's the best she could do because we were late. We left and went to Friendly Toast, where the service was "friendly" and fantastic and so was the food. I will not return to this restaurant after such a rude encounter. I asked for the name of the manager for the restaurant from the hotel's front desk and they informed me there currently wasn't one. Absolutely loved this place! We were in town for a single day as Burlington was the first stop with an 8 day road rally with our Mini Cooper. We hadn't really researched where to eat and just happened upon this place. The view was stunning looking at Lake Champlain as the sunset - wow! Ismar, our waiter, was excellent! We were torn between the Lobster roll and the monkfish and went with the monkfish based on his recommendation as in his words 'lobster rolls are available in lots of places, the monkfish is not' SPOT ON MY FRIEND!!! Now here is the thing. I ordered mine requesting no bell peppers (allergy) When he brought it out it had peppers in it. This happens to me more often then you can imagine, but generally they take mine back to the kitchen and I sit and wait while I encourage my husband to eat his so it doesn't get cold. This was the absolutely FIRST time that a server took back both of our plates to be remade so we would be able to eat together!! We got to enjoy our meal together, which for foodies like us is great as we like to talk about what we are eating. Dining out is a social experience after all. There was a 2 piece musical group in the adjacent lounge which made the experience even better if that is at all possible. Go here!! read more

Interesting fact: some of the best fine dining restaurants in Burlington are located in hotels, and Blue Northeast Kitchen is one of them. Brunch is okay, but dinner service is top-notch. I was reluctant to eat here, food in a hotel? Our stay at the Marriott included breakfast here so we gave it a go. Honestly, this was some of the best food and service I've ever had I got the breakfast sandwich with home fries. The bread on my sandwich was quite literally the best bread I've ever tasted, extremely lite and fluffy. The waitress said it was baked at a nearby bakery. The home fries were perfectly seasoned with garlic, paprika, red pepper. My husband got the omelette. He absolutely loved it. The service was excellent. Our waitress, Amanda, was extremely attentive and nice. The only potential downside is cost. It can get a little pricey. We got a cup of coffee, breakfast sandwich with fries, omelette with fries, and it was $48. The environment is very nice. It's extremely clean in an upscale environment. The menu is extremely limited with around 6 options for breakfast. But if you know food, you know a small menu generally means better food as they can focus on those few dishes. Staying at Willard Street Inn and it was recommended. We were not disappointed. From the very start with a phone call for reservations, Richard was so pleasant on the phone. Server, Lilly was a delight. If she didn't know an answer she found out. She was attentive and everything she recommended was a winner. We started with a dozen oysters, Pink Lady's from MA. Husband had the Bleu Greens with Blue cheese dressing, I had a simple dinner salad with their lemon vinaigrette and split the Misty Knoll Chicken Roulade. We had a half bottle of Chardonnay. Service was excellent as was the food! Our plates were cleared as soon as we were done with them. I love that!! We ended dinner with their homemade orange ice cream. As many have stated, the dinners are great in providing variety for tastebuds and preferences. In addition, my favorite is brunch. During warmer weather, they set up in the courtyard with plenty of sunshine and just a great open atmosphere. In colder weather, you'll be inside but with the huge windows overlooking the lakeshore and across to the Adirondacks you won't feel closed in at all. From an exceptionally filling oatmeal to my favorite, the corned beef hash, make sure you come hungry as you are guaranteed to be satisfied. My wife, who is Celiac, never has an issue finding a couple of good choices on the menu and the gluten-free bread is delicious. And to top it all off is the waitstaff. As a local, I can appreciate folks in the service industry and Bleu has managed to hire the cream of the crop. You know the type - the folks that politely ask questions so they remember you the next time you come in? We're always impressed with their skills and friendly demeanor. As a local, we have our choices for brunches, and Bleu floats to the top. read more

This review is solely based on breakfast experience. The food was okay. I think food itself is somewhere around 3-3.5 star (once again, breakfast only). However, the experience we had there ruined everything. TL;DR: If you or someone in your group has food allergies, save yourself from this place. As a guest of the hotel, I tried to have breakfast there with my family. It wasn't packed at first but got busier. There was only one server, Daphine, and one very friendly host. I thought that the number of tables were a bit too many for one server to handle. However, it can never justify the server's attitude nor rudeness. Waiting for her to come was okay and understandable. But when I mentioned food allergy (to specific nuts), she said that "I don't know it has nuts." I did not say nut allergies, I specifically mentioned two nuts, and told her that other nuts are okay and asked her if she could check what kind of nuts are in the granola. She grudgingly said she would do, then walk past us and yelled at someone at kitchen. Well, awkward, but I didn't realized that that was a cue for us to leave. Later, she came back with our food, and told her that wheat bread or sourdough comes with the omelette, and she said again, "wheat bread has nuts and I don't know what kind of nuts." with rudeness. What she should have said, if she or the restaurant truly did not know what kind of nuts in that specific wheat bread, either they don't know because the supplier did not provide the ingredients (highly doubtful) or she can't figure it out because there is no one to ask at the moment. Rather than plainly rude, she could have tried to acknowledge the situation. By then, we were very uncomfortable and and had to leave without finishing our meal. Have you ever imagined that someone has a disability and he/she got denied (I don't care, I don't need to spare one more minutes to accommodate your disability) at a hotel restaurant? I have not. But I experienced it. My family member has food allergies and it is indeed a disability under ADA. It was a passive aggressive discrimination. She might be too busy to cover all the tables by herself, but that does not justify her attitude. We are staying 5 more days and will come back this fall, but we will never come back to here. I called up for seats for first service thinking since it's Super Bowl Weekend it might be "Fully Committed" to my delight the young lady who answered the phone could not have been nicer and gave us a table right away. I've heard about Bleu from a fellow chef and of their philosophy of attaining locally sourced produce. So I was excited to try them out and to try out their extensive fish options. Bleu is situated within the Hotel Vermont therefor the decor is a bit corporate but with that being said i was pleasantly surprised to see well placed noise reduction panels on the ceiling and noise reduction materials within the main room. High ceilings and large windows allow for a non cluttered space. We were immediately attended to by our server Ryan. He could not have been any more nicer, more professional, more knowledgeable of the menu and the wine list. We requested a coursed out meal which was not an issue and we were off to the races. Our first course was a dozen Washington based oysters which were fresh briny and perfectly shucked. We paired this with a crisp, dry Le Berceau Brut from Limoux, France. The second course was the Burrata with roasted carrots, kale-pepita pesto, cranberry preserve on a toasted brioche. This was a flavorful dish with a lot going on. Maybe a bit too much. The burrata was creamy with crisp sides but the cranberry preserve was an odd pairing flavor profile with the roasted carrots and the pesto. Our third course was their signature Pan-Seared Scallops with roasted cauliflower, pomegranate molasses drizzle, and pistachios. This was indeed the star plate of the evening. Our scallops were expertly seared with a nice "chef touch" of cross hatching. The cauliflowers were not dried out with a nice crunch. The real surprise was the base of the dish. A puree of sunchokes. It was so creamy it was sublime. We almost ordered a second round!! Our fourth course was the Pan-Seared Jonah Crab Cake, with onion confit, pickled red onions, black garlic aioli. This was paired with a Steele Chardonnay from sonoma that was perfect. The crab cake was well constructed without too many fillers and seasoned correctly. The Black garlic aioli appeared to be an after thought on the plate presented as a lightly smeared streak. I would of liked a heavier application to accompany the crab cake. The two pearl onions were to have been confit, but I think they missed the mark. Overall that dish was good but unfortunately did not reach the same level as our other courses. We finished our meal with a chocolate hazelnut cake with ganache and candied cocoa nibs, and whipped cream. The cake was moist and not too sweet, the whipped cream was a bit flat. Our waiter Ryan made this evening with his accommodations to our requests. Our overall experience was one of fulfillment, joy and satisfaction. I would recommend Bleu and will return again. Easy parking which is generously validated. Noise level moderate. Live music was a bonus. Although we did not sit at the bar after or before dinner, their bar menu looked worthy of a sit down. read more

As I was getting ready to visit my stepdaughter at UVM, I looked around for dinner spots that took reservations. This had availability and decent reviews so I booked a table for 7:30 on a Saturday night. When we showed up, I was slightly concerned that this was a hotel restaurant and immediately lowered my expectations. However, I have to say, we had a pretty great experience! We arrived almost 30 minutes early and were able to be seated right away. Our host, Richard, was such a lovely, charming man. Our server, Sarah, was also just delightful. The menu had a decent selection from burgers and salads to salmon and steak frites. Prices were on the high side but the food was quite good and all in all, we had a really great evening including some spectacular views of the sunset over the lake. We will be back! read more
