Looking for mlocal flavor and ran across this gem. French Cuisine in Vermont, who knew. Had to try it. Both of us ordered beef bourguignon it came with mashed potatoes and green beans. I wanted this to be special. I wanted it to excel. It let me down in so many ways. Five people, four appetisers, two wine and one beer, and four main courses. I was lured here because someone said it was better than Bistro de Margo; it was not. Service was good from the server and poor from the bus boys and kitchen. The kitchen failed in many ways. Could I give it fractional scorse it would be 2.6. The server was good and had a phenomenal memory to take all our orders with no notes. Wow! The three appetizers were delivered out of order. One came. Fast forward 20 minutes; the remaining two came out. The appetizer dishes were never cleared. They hung around until we decided not to have desert! The appetizers were underwhelming; how can you screw up a Caesar salad? The main courses disappointed in many ways. The dishes were serverd luke warm. Mussels were dehydrated on top of the heap and obvioulsy sat under a heat map. The steaks were cooked well but accompaniments were cold, cool, or barely warm; take your pick none were appetizing. The plates were stone cold which didn't help. Finally after dinner was served and eaten and plates cleared for deserts we did not order the remaining plates and debis were cleared from the table. Not good. Not professional. Not worth the money. The wines were good. The beer was good. Dinner came to $275 plus another $60 tip. It wasn't worth it. There is clealry issues in the kitchen and staff. They were simply not into it. I would not come back. If you want a French dinner look elsewhere or just don't try that in Burlington. read more

I don't use this word lightly, but it seems that these servers particularly ours was a racist. Our waiter did not check on us once to ask us for anything. Needless to say, service from our bald headed waiter was not good. When other white people were leaving, couple of the wait staff said thank you and said goodbye, but not a word when we left. Believe me when I say that we are not overly sensitive people, but we know when we are not treated equally. Regardless we left nearly 20% tip because we don't want them to stereotype type us as being stingy. So, if you are Asian or a minority, you may want to spend your money elsewhere. read more

We walked by the night before and the plates looked amazing, so we decided to give this French Bistro a try. It's got a great location right on Church St. and it has a cozy and warm vibe for a wintery day. We made Sunday reservations and arrived at 7:45 PM as the evening was winding down. Our waitress was excellent and we enjoyed her help throughout the evening. My son and I ordered Beef Bourguignon and my wife ordered the Mediterranean Salmon pasta. While walking around Church Street on Friday morning, I decided to stop by Leunig's based on the great reviews--and I'm glad I did. The ambience is charming and cozy, with a touch of Parisian flair. I got seated right away at 11:30 am, and the place was pleasantly quiet. I chose a window seat, which was perfect for a bit of people watching on Church Street. They also have outdoor seating, which I'll definitely try next time. I asked the waitress for a recommendation and went with the steak frites. The steak was tasty, but the real highlight for me was the fries--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of flavor. Simple yet delicious. Burlington, VT - we came here for a late supper on a quiet Sunday evening as the food looked pretty good and the menu is appealing with a rounded variety of bistro classics. The fam were in a Canadian state of mind and ordered poutine (short rib + duck confit) which was tasty. The duck poutine was overpowered by rosemary at the end but we uncovered a surprising amount of duck at the bottom, so dig! The feta cheesecake, new to the menu, was a revelation. Even as a non-feta fan, I was won over by the savory & creamy texture and flavor. Probably my favorite item of the night. I enjoyed my rich & loaded cavatappi carbonara but didn't love the beef bourguignon my husband ordered which was disappointingly dry and chippy - in part because I make a fine one at home that's luxuriously fall-apart-tender in gravy so have higher expectations of this standard dish in a French restaurant, even a casual one. Our waitress was lovely, though the hostess wasn't terribly warm or welcoming. There's a lot to like here however and I wouldn't mind touring across more of the menu. read more

It was a dark and stormy night! Coming into this warm and cozy restaurant was like be welcomed in by friends sheltering us from the storm. Everything from food to service to ambiance was excellent. So glad we made reservations. The tables were close and all were full. We had to wait for about 5 minutes for our little two top to be vacated and set up for us. Crystal, our server greeted us and got us started on drinks - Pinot Grigio for my husband, a virgin Hot Toddy for me. After perusing the menu we decided upon Chicken Statler for him, Mediterranean Salmon Pasta for me. Both dishes were excellent. Along with the pasta and the flaky fresh salmon, there were roasted tomatoes, kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, baby spinach, all blended with a rich feta parmesan cream sauce. Lovely little place in downtown Vermont I came here with my girlfriend for our celebration. We had a great time. We went late and so we got their reduced price menu (last hour). We were at Leunig's for lunch on a Monday. It is one of the few restaurants that's open on Monday noon in Church St Marketplace area. Obviously there were a lot customers at the restaurant due to this fact. They had both indoor and outdoor seating options available. We sat inside, right front of the fancy bar. They also had a big dining hall at the back as well. There was only one waiter who was attending all the tables. For first 10 minutes, we didn't get any attention from him, until we had to call him to put in our orders. The food came out within a decent time. Fried oyster was good. I got the trio slider that had lamb, venison and bison. Each of them was made with different toppings. I really liked the variety and the way they were cooked. But the best dish was the chicken fingers my daughter got. Probably the best chicken finger I ever ate. It was made so well with thin fried layer and soft chunky chicken inside. We all liked the french fries as well. Overall all the food dishes were spectacular. Personally I had mixed feeling about the place as I had amazing food here but the service was not satisfactory. Upon arrival, the host promptly sat us at a table. The tables were very close to each other. Barely any wiggle room. We were there for Monday lunch. There was only 1 waiter and 1 bartender. We waited A WHILE before the waiter came to take our order. All we had were appetizers and kids meal so it came out fast because I felt other tables waited long for food as well. Despite the wait, the food was actually good. We had lobster with salad, sliders, oysters and chicken tenders/fries(kid's). All are flavorful and tender. They breaded the lobster which was pleasantly good with lemons (like calamari). Oysters were cooked with garlic flavor. Great portion of chicken tenders, we all had some because they were really good. Overall a busy restaurant at downtown area. Great food if you don't mind to wait. read more

A fantastic bistro takes you to Paris for an afternoon. The high prices are well worth it. The service was stellar. It's in the heart of the shopping in Old Town district. If you visit Burlington, you should go here for a meal. This area has heavy traditions of French cuisine and the food here is pretty legit for the US. The ambiance is beautiful old building with top notch staff with friendly service. We forgot our leftover bag and the server ran out to catch us! Super nice. Expect to pay $19-20 for a sandwich or salad but all the food I saw came out of the kitchen looking great. If I had a negative it would be that they don't have any French beer on tap. And they DO have two taps devoted to Von Trapp beer that is really not good at all compared to other Vermont offerings. My husband and I came across this place while walking around and decided to have dinner here. We ate outside since there was no wait. The food was great, but the service... no. It was quite hot in the afternoon and typically when it's hot, I don't have much of an appetite. At this point it cooled off considerably so I had no problems being outside. My husband ordered the 'Beef Bourguignon' which was Beef Tips Braised in Red Wine, with Bacon, Pearl Onions, Carrots, Celery & Button Mushrooms With Garlic Mashed Potatoes & Haricots Verts. He absolutely loved it and the portion size was great. I ordered 2 soups for my main because, as stated before, I was not that hungry. I ordered a chilled soup: 'Chilled Green Tomato Avocado Gazpacho' and a french onion soup. They were both absolutely delicious. However, you would have thought I murdered someone. The server said, "You do realize it's 2 soups". I said yes. She said, "You want 2 soups?" and I said, "Yes, I am not that hungry. That is what I'm ordering". I understand her telling me it's 2 soups - just incase I didn't realize - but after I said I was aware, she kept going and was completely baffled at why I was ordering 2 soups. Who cares? I'm PAYING you for the soups.. just give it to me. I felt very judged (because I was being judged) and when she bought them over OR checked on our table, she just kept saying "Here are the 2 soups" or "Hows the 2 soups?" Why would I order something big if I know I'm not that hungry? She asked about our vacation. We told her about it and she immediately questioned it. We explained why we choose to do what we were doing and still questioned it. I don't understand this lady. I liked the food and I would never come back or recommend. I had a great conversation with a total stranger on the ferry from NY to Vermont. They highly recommended eating at Leunig's Bistro. I looked at some reviews and decided it would be a good match for our group. We were seated quickly with menus and after a short while our server came over with water and took our drink order. There were many familiar items but also some very interesting choices. The Soup Pistou was hearty and tasty, the Gothamist sandwiches were delicious and came with a very nice portion of mixed greens with a vinaigrette. My Wedge Salad was good but disappointing.....two of the items listed were never put on my salad....and for the price... there was barely any bacon or blue cheese. (I was not looking for a cup but you can see from the picture there was barely a tablespoon. I also didn't think about the missing items until I was almost done) My most favorite part was when we saw someone eating escargot we had to order some. It was tender, with a delicious garlic butter sauce and melted cheese....we soaked it up with perfectly toasted baguette slices. Our server was excellent and I wish we lived closer! read more

Came here for lunch with my family of 6 (and 2 kids) during labor day weekend. The restaurant was busy so service was a tad bit slower, but the staff was definitely doing their best (and they were very friendly about it as well). We are all vegetarian and their food was delicious - lots of vegetarian options and they are able to accommodate and adjust the menu for us. The food was really good (not gonna lie, the kids tomato pasta was delicious!). We did not order alcohol but got some mocktails and they were great. Very cute, intimate French bistro in downtown Burlington. I would say that the dinner special is such a treat and steal if you can make it. We ordered the soup and salad for our appetizers but also a pate to sate our appetite. Each dish was reasonably portioned and we were both very full by the end of our meal. Overall: what a way to cap a beautiful day trip through Vermont. We had read another individuals review saying how he recently went on an emotional journey and came solo. Leunigs was pretty good with company too. Food: get the poutine full stop. A half portion (ask the server) is more than enough for 3 people to share. The duck with the cheese curds and the confit gravy really just starts you off with richness. I ordered the roasted chicken and I think the highlight was the vegetables. I had to tell the waiter that these were probably the most "real" vegetables I've had in a long time. Fresh full of flavor and taste like they came straight out of a garden. The meal really just reminds me of a wonderfully cooked home meal. Topped it off with some coffee and this weird hot cocoa cocktail. I actually despise chocolate but I would order that hot cocoa cocktail again if I could. This is a top spot in Burlington for me... it's sad that Church St has gone so far downhill. Tuesday night dinner option Was Leunig's. Don't know how to pronounce it but the food was good. It looks like an upscale French themed restaurant. Most of the menu option didn't appear to be French at all though. We were told to make reservations in advance and thank Goodness we did because it was crowded. Like just about every other place in Burlington it's rather tight. The foyer had barely enough space for two people to fit through at the same time. Noise level was moderate so you would be able to have a nice conversation without yelling. I ordered and old fashioned that was a little on the sweet side but not bad. For an appetizer my friends and I shared an order of the truffle fries. They were the best part of the meal. Seasoned to perfection, light and crisp on the outside, and not too oily. For my main I had the filet. It came with asparagus and a seafood medley. I could have done without the hollandaise sauce because the steak was delicious without it. Very good service from our waitress earned them the 5 stars. Never had to ask for refills on water and she checked on us often. read more

We showed up on a Wednesday night with no reservation. Credit to the staff they got seated us in 5 minutes and even got us a cool seat that looked out into the activities outside. Real good food. Recommend sharing the appetizers so you can get a sense of all the good options. We had the cornbread stuffing, mac n cheese really spaetzle and cheese. The cornbread stuffing was excellent and moist. The mac n cheese was cheesy and perfectly cooked. I had a filet for the entree. It was very good. I asked for it to be medium rare and it was cooked exactly medium rare and so tender. We finished with crème brûlée and is was so good of course cooked with maple syrup. I had the pleasure of visiting Leunig's Bistro three times within my 5 day stay. I thought I made an early reservation at 6:30 p.m., however, when I arrived it was packed. We stopped in Burlington on our way back to Boston from Canada and Leunig's had the most interesting menu in the area by a country mile. We had the goat cheese, calamari, carbonara, and onion soup. One of the things I like about the dining options here in Vermont is the availability of Garden/Beyond Meat burgers. We had reservations for lunch, and we were seated immediately. Ordered: Beyond burger with grilled onions, cheese, and a side of sweet potato fries; then the turkey sandwich, which my companion was quite pleased with as it is quite a heavy sandwich. We just had a most excellent meal at Leunig's Bistro. Everything was wonderful. We started with the duck confit poutine. It was incredibly delicious. Just the right combination of salt and spice with a decadent gravy over the fries. We had three different entrees: duck two ways, braised short ribs, and steak frittes. The duck was divine. My husband and I came to dinner at Leunig's tonight after moving our daughter into her dorm. The food was wonderful. The ambience was wonderful. The service was absolutely above and beyond. I wish I remembered our server's name. I don't, but she was a lady who used to be a preschool teacher, and she was so wonderful and kind to us after a long and emotional day. When I go to a restaurant, I expect good food. And I expect good service. What I received tonight with service that was exceptional, intuitive, comforting, and empathetic. Food was amazing, we called at 8:30 last Friday and asked if we would be a bother if we showed up at 9:15 because they have an opening in reservations on Yelp. They said yes come in so we went in and everything was phenomenal until I got the steak frites that I ordered medium rare. It was raw in the middle, straight up purple uncooked meat. When I asked if it could get heated up the waitress said "I'll get that put up to medium for you". Look I get it's the end of the night but we asked if it would be an inconvenience if we came in and you said it'll be fine dining. There was no reason to have a snobby answer to me asking for my steak to be cooked properly! It was raw! I didn't want it to be cooked to medium I wanted it took be cooked in general! Ordered a salmon caesar. It took over 30 min., was tasteless, the salmon was overcooked and Not 6 oz. as indicated on the menu. When the bill came it was $16 for the salad and an Additional $18 for the salmon! Crazy. I checked and she said this was accurate. A Total rip off. The salad was marked $20 on the menu. Even in NYC they don't charge that for a yummy salad. My starter of artichokes was 2 halved hearts fried, for $16. Not bad, but overpriced again for what they were. read more
