Maybe I hit a bad day, but, stopped there to have lunch with 3 other buddies. Ordered a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. It was ok, but, there was a large 1/2 inch piece at end that was a hard piece of pure fat and gristle. It should have easily been caught and cut off during prep and before I chomped down on it and found it that way instead. Other issue was greasy silverware. My knife had a thin smear of grease on it. Whoever was the dishwasher there needs to improve their wash technique. I went there once in 2024 and never had an issue, so maybe things have changed there over the year, and not for the better. We're meeting for lunch again mid-Summer. It won't be at Spanked Puppy again, at least for now! read more

WOW. This place has amazing food and it is so yummy but I felt so full after. Nice treat to get after running so many errands. The service was so good and so fast. The staff was really nice and respectful. The outdoor spots next to the bar were so nice and surprisingly not a lot of bugs were around the area. It's also not as crowded out there and more peaceful. 10/10 read more

I don't usually post if an experience was negative but this was so awful I feel I need to say something. I went there for dinner the other night and ordered the prime rib medium well. What I got was a plate full of cut up chunks of burnt fat, gristle, muscle etc. just a whole bunch of bits and pieces. Looks like they had cobbled together something from plates coming back after people ate. It was so disgusting I couldn't even get enough courage to say anything. I ate the string beans and half my baked potato. The waiter was so sweet. Asked if I wanted a Togo box. My boyfriend's piece of meat was equally fatty and gross but at least it was a whole piece. Not cut up chunks. I wish I had taken a picture. The image in my head will never go away. read more

We spent a couple days in the area and The Spanked Puppy was the closest place to our air bnb so we took a chance. It did not disappoint and we had a great dinner. It's a local watering hole so don't go expecting anything fancy. I had the cream of tomato soup and honestly I could have had 5 more bowls it was THAT good. A nice cheddar grilled cheese with it just hit the spot. I ordered an iced tea and it was fresh steeped, sooo good. My husband had the Cesar salad with crispy chicken and the dressing was homemade as well. He loved it. Appetizer was the Thai wings and they were perfection. The staff was funny and very helpful with recommendations including some generational recipes that are loved by the patrons. I enjoyed my beer and poutine after a bike ride. I sat at the bar and watched the women's NCAA basketball finals. The bartender was fast and attentive and friendly to regulars but brusque with me, the outsider in bike clothes. The bar was full of locals and loud but I sort of liked the ambience. We came here for dinner once and ordered takeout another time. Overall the food is okay, the wings and cheesesteak were good, the cheeseburger and fries were okay, the quesadillas were quite bland. The drinks were drinks. Unfortunately the vibe here wasn't great for dine-in. Some of the bar patrons were quite loud and obnoxious, and I got the impression they were regulars. The staff were friendly, and I wouldn't be opposed to coming again on a less crowded (or maybe more crowded) night, but I might just do takeout next time. read more

I hadn't known about this place and since COVID, I have not eaten out. When I found out they had an outdoor seating area and would have COVID Rules, in place, I decided to join some friends for a nice socially distanced meal on the patio. I really liked the menu offerings and the prices are very reasonable. I ordered a reuben and fries. It was delicious and copious. I took half my sandwich home. The fries were perfectly cooked. Went here because it was one of the closest places to eat from the place we were staying. Service was good. Friendly waitstaff. Probably fun place if you live around here, to stop for a drink after work and want a quick bite to eat. Wings are good, burgers are dry. Fries, so so. Great spot! Passing thru on a hot day in the middle of the afternoon. My family was seated right away, there is a sit down dining area (where we sat and it was quieter) , pub/bar area and sit down by the pub area. The menu offered so many comfort options, it was difficult to choose. We tried the wings, seafood platter, fried pickles their special burger and beef stroganoff. Everyone was happy and the service was great! The food did not come out right away, nor did it take a long time but the restaurant was not super busy. we did have five orders. We go to the Puppy often. It's a great spot for families. The staff is always friendly and offers to bring crayons and toys for our kiddo. The inside is a classic pub/bar vibe and the outside is great in the warmer months. We enjoy going to see the bands. The food is solid. Great daily specials. Had Sunday morning brunch here while on vacation in VT. It is a very divey, local place. I think it would be a fun place to have a few drinks with some locals but as for brunch.. well it was subpar. The avocado benedict (on special menu) said it came with avocado smash that was actually just ice cold packaged guacamole. I also ordered a side of pancakes and one was completely dough/raw in the middle. The waitress did take it off the bill, so that was nice! The wait time for food was slow and they were busy but not packed. Also, it was freezing in there. Most people kept their jackets/hats on while eating. Food is always good. But the older lady that works there is always talking bad about other people and her employees to customers. Especially when she is in there drinking. We ordered take-out. If you're starving and need something to fill you up, you could try it here. But 3 out of 5 dishes were pretty sad. My aunt got a lobster roll which she didn't like (not sure why you would get a lobster roll "inland" anyway), my husband had the French dip and it was very sad, grey looking meat on an over-sized roll. I got the chef salad which was fresh but pretty average. The menu said it had seasonal vegetables, but it only came with a couple of cucumbers and tomatoes. I could have used some more variety. My uncle had the tuna melt and my kids the chicken tenders all which were average. With so many other restaurants, there's no reason to try it again. read more

This is my favorite bar in Colchester. The ambiance was pleasantly festive as we visited during the holidays. The food was a solid 3.5, definitely some good bar food. The French Dip deserves the top spot on the menu. Corn chowder was excellent! Risotto balls were good, wish the sauce was a little less sweet and slightly more heat.
