I have to say by far the best beer and burger I've had!! So this is our normal stop when traveling back from Montreal it's only 20 mins from the border and WELL WORTH THE STOP!!! The service is fast the food is delicious and fresh, I had the loaded potato skins along with the burger of the day, the bartender was amazing!!! She was fast, friendly, and very knowledgeable of the menu. They have an outside patio that opens up in May. If I lived closer I would definitely be a regular!! We were sent here by the desk clerk at our motel. Awful! My wife had a steak which was fatty and overcooked (she sent it back and the replacement was still pretty well done, but......), soggy vegetables and a really sad salad bar. I had the mussels in white sauce which were actually served in a thin splash of white wine and were essentially tasteless. They were served without a bowl to put the shells in as well. No matter what side you sit on you can choose items from either menu (bar or restaurant menu). The salad bar is a unique and exquisite touch with a vast variety of warm breads and customizable salad plates. We had heard pretty good things about this place, so we decided to go here for Easter Brunch. Big mistake. $100 for 4 of us included a mediocre salad bar, and some things in chafing dishes which were mostly cold. Eggs, bacon (the bacon was very good), sausage, french toast, waffles, sliced turkey (dry as could be), ham (no flavor) sausage gravy (gloppy and inedible) with dry biscuits, and salmon. The salmon was pretty good. Dessert station consisted of a wide variety of not very good desserts. Calling it an Easter buffet is quite a stretch. Perhaps a regular lunch or dinner is better, but they need to work on their "buffet". We were very disappointed. The service was good and everyone was friendly, though. read more

The lounge side of the Butcher Block is simply horrible. Whomever designed it had seemingly zero understanding of acoustics. The noise level is the worst I've been in since growing out of hitting night clubs. It was a din of shouting retirees and waitstaff. The cacophony made the entire experiance too horrible to fairly remark on the food. In the past, when the place actually allowed guests to be seated in the pleasant dining room side of the place, I have enjoyed my time. I would love to give it a solid 4 stars. But, nope, they decided not to clean the dining room, or whatever lazy thing, and that lounge is horrific. If you go insist on being seated in the dining room or leave. read more

Outwardly, this restaurant is inviting, save for the unfortunate choice of signage coloring. The hosts are always pleasant. Sometimes there is a wait, but they have done well accommodating guests during covid. The place has two primary sides, the lounge and the dining room, a patio, and banquet hall. I have only experienced the dining room and lounge. The dining room is one of my favorite places in Plattsburgh. It has a has a nice rustic ambiance and great service. The lounge, however, has horrible ambiance and moderate to bad service. The lounge is extremely loud and is in desperate need of an acoustics makeover. It looks like, rather than cleaning, they just slap a coat of white paint on everything once in a while. Honestly, It's like a frat party for middle class middle aged people who probably shouldn't drink wine in public. If you don't want to go deaf or dine in a room full of LOUD drunk soccer moms, ask for the dining room. Avoid cocktails. The bartenders are simply pourers and have no idea how to mix drinks. Ordering the same cocktail twice during a dinner will yield two entirely different drinks with breathtakingly different alcohol contents. There is disrepair in the restrooms. Don't get the mashed potatoes as they tend to have an unappealing crust from sitting under heat lamps or something of similar ilk. read more

If you're in Plattsburgh, this is the place to eat. Outdoor dining area has just enough tables not to overcrowd, complete with an outdoor bar. Service was impeccable from the moment we walked in. Wait staff was friendly and informative. Two different menus were available, one more casual than the other. Salad/soup/bread bar is a must. Three types of bread offered, made fresh daily. Salad bar features three different types of lettuce with sides, cold slaw and various pasta salads. My husband had the soup, which he loved! We each had different varieties of mac & cheese. Portions were HUMUNGOUS! The gentleman next to us was RAVING about the prime rib and he owns his own restaurant in Montreal. If we return to the area, we will be back! read more

My friend and I were super excited to come in for dinner but unfortunately this restaurant was a complete disappointment. We both ordered filet mignon, medium-rare, when they came mine was completely rare. Not to mention the meat had absolutely no flavor. Came here as I do often for happy hour drinks. I really enjoy the deal and the service is always exemplary however today I forgot my ID, that means no happy hour for me. I decide I'll have a ginger beer to keep up appearance but the waitress as well as manager were insistent that ginger beer was not a soft drink and was in fact alcoholic they checked and confirmed that it wasn't above 2% but they insisted any alcohol content was not allowed to be sold. I won't be back until somebody tells these guys the difference between a ginger beer and a bud light. read more

I have been eating at the Butcher Block for over 30 years and it remains my favorite local restaurant. I had never had a bad meal there until my birthday a week ago. The lobster Mac and cheese had so much bread crumbs that is all I could taste. I wrote that on their FB page and was called the next day by the manager. He listened, apologized, spoke with the chef and sent me a gift card to make up for the bad meal. I appreciate that I was listened to and compensated. Wow. So I ordered the surf and turf burger that literally 3 pieces if lobster on it. So 8 had the waiter take it to put jyst a few more on it the burger l (you would think for 27$ for a burger it would stacked. And when the menu says "piled high" nope I sit there looking a buyer for the next 15 min. Looking at it. And then when the girl finally comes over they talk about making me another burger. This is after an hour. Nope no thanks. Place is a rip off. When all they had to do is take it back and put a few more small pieces of lobster on it. And i would of been happy but instead make big deal about it and have me looking it for 10 min while my food gets cold. Nice place, we were on a short road trip on friday and lured in by the music outside. Unfortunatly they stopped playing when we just got our beer, so we were forced to stay. We wanted a hole in the wall sort of place with good comfort food. This place had a nice decor, but overpriced and attempted to be pretentious. The oversized white plates made the food look tiny and unappetizing, and my $7 calamari plate had maximum 150 grams of squid on it. Not recommended for a satisfying road trip stop. The Butcher Block used to be THE place to go for great steak and seafood. Around 3 years ago they changed the menu and it has gone downhill from there. Steaks are less than good. I have had better at a sub shop! Seafood is rubber and not good. The banquet hall is not bad but still has that lack of commitment to it. I used to look at the Butcher Block as a premier place to have a 5 star meal in Plattsburgh. Now it's just another place to eat the if you have no place else to go. read more

Butcher Block is, in my opinion, one of the best restaurants in Plattsburgh. In a town where nothing is really permanent and closings are a part of everyday life, Butcher Block has been a constant for years. Excellent salad bar, fantastic steak, and strong drinks make BB one of my favorites. It is fairly expensive though, as most steakhouses are, and it's really really dim--on my last visit, we took my grandparents and my grandma had to whip out a flashlight to read the menu! If you can deal with the limited lighting and loads of families and you're in Plattsburgh, check it out. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to the Butcher Block as I am not a big fan of chain restaurants. I visited on a cold winter night and the place was very warm with a roaring fire going. I had the salmon dinner, the salmon although not the best cut was cooked as I requested and was quite tasty, the baked potato was perfectly baked and the green beans and warm bread were also tasty. My companions were happy with their dinners, one had the salad bar which included soup and bread. My other companion really enjoyed her steak dinner! I had the surf and turf; my steak was excellent but the scallops were not. My fiancé had the pasta and it was bland, very bland. The salad bar is okay. Pretty average. My friends enjoyed their meat but didn't seem too thrilled. I also really wish they had more vegetarian options--like at least the option of a veggie patty on the burgers, which all looked so good. I've been here several times and always ended up with a frown on my face. Perhaps it's because I ordered the wrong thing everytime (I've never tried the steak, but everything I've had was okay), or maybe I just hold a grudge against the waitress that gave me a shit load of $1's when I already had 6 in my wallet. Had the pleasure of dining at the Butcher Block for mother's day - what a great experience ! We made a reservation in the bar area. Jay and Maryanne were fantastic and very attentive. Mothers received a small glass of complimentary Champagne with fresh strawberries. They brought the kids ginger ale with fresh strawberries so everyone felt included. Salad bar was fresh and bread was warm. Food was excellent. At the end of the dining experience we all received a carnation and coupon for a future visit. Stopped by here on the way back south from Canada. Wasn't that hungry but I was surprised they had escargot on the appetizer menu. It tasted great with lots of garlic just the way I like it. My wife and I and went today with his graduation class the staff was very disorganized when we arrived they had issues on how the people were going to sit at the tables one of the waitresses was very rude and very unhelpful the other waitress was a rockstar took very good care of the people when we went to the salad bar the last was rotten it was all brown had to say something to the staff about it my wife got a cherry tomato off the sidebar it was frozen solid and cucumbers for Frozen and when our meal came out it was poorly prepared this place used to be a very good place to go for lunch in the afternoon but far as I'm concerned they have gone downhill on their food quality and service for the most part read more

It's not all that common that a restaurant can get it ALL right, but the Butcher Block manages to do just that. First, the Adirondack interior and decor is rustic and authentic, as well as warm and cozy. The service is top notch, Kate was professional, pleasant and attentive. Next, the food was outstanding! I came for a steak and was treated to a tender, perfectly cooked, ribeye. I ordered the petite selection, but the steak took up much of the plate- a very generous "petite." It was served with a fresh baked potato and crisp green beans. My favorite part of this wonderful experience was the homemade turkey florentine soup from the soup and salad bar. All I can say is "Wow." I'm told the soups are all homemade and prepared fresh. It was phenomenal, and I rate the salad bar as a solid "A." Finally, the restaurant has a nice wine selection and you can order "Unparallelled" Cabernet by the glass. A nice wine for eight bucks to go with a good steak. Our family enjoyed bubbly shrimp and oysters for appetizers. The shrimp was delicious - garlic, butter, and melted cheese .. hard to beat that.
