Did the outdoor seating, the food is good but the venue isn't really for me.

This review is about the catering and event hosting operations at Butcher Block, which has a nice big event space in the rear of the location called the Adirondack Room. Came here for a wedding this past weekend and was very impressed by the spread of appetizers, fresh baked bread, and the vegetarian entree I selected. To start, there was a mountainous spread of italian meats, cheese, grilled veggies, olives and grilled pita bread. I didn't try them, but many reported that the mini beef meatballs in marinara were very good. Before the dinner course, they served a small salad in which all of the veggies were fresh and crisp. Very impressive for such a large event. For dinner, I ordered the vegetarian entree, which was a hearty bowl of butternut squash ravioli in a vegetable cream sauce. I was impressed with the cut size and amount of vegetables in the sauce, although the dish was very sweet overall. When I finally looked up from my own plate, it appeared from the quickly and freshly cleaned plates around me that the other guests enjoyed their beef and chicken entrees as well. The beef entree was individually baked beef wellington stuffed with mushrooms, which was an interesting and unique touch. I would definitely come back here and eat at the actual restaurant. Also very conveniently located right off the I-87 exit for a good meal on the way to or from Montreal from upstate NY. read more

I'm pretty sure cafeteria food is fresher and tastier. I went there for lunch with family and left hungry and feeling sick. Salad bar= canned and frozen vegetables and Heinz dressings. Cream of mushroom soup had some strange sweetness to it. Now let's get to the meals. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was not seasoned and very fatty. The bun was doused in butter and the pulled pork seasoning seemed to be added at the sandwich assembly rather than mixed into the meat which made it tasteless since the bun absorbed most of it. My father ordered the turkey sandwich which was topped with mashed potatoes and this grey gravy which was thick and inedible. Who tops a sandwich with mashed potatoes? It was impossible to eat. I'd say the "best" meal was the baby back ribs. At least there was some type of seasoning on the meat, even if there was an overpowering taste of vinegar. Lastly, the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich was another flop. Thick, unseasoned pieces of steak were slapped between a Costco ciabatta bun which was barely toasted and a piece of melted cheese. Underwhelming to say the least. Do yourself a favor, go to Five Guys instead. Probably cheaper and way tastier. read more

Stopped in after a long tiring day of travel and decided to just go somewhere close by our hotel. We found Butcher Block and we were pleasantly surprised. I recommend ordering off of the tavern menu if you are more price conscious. I had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was some of the most delicious chicken I have ever had. I ditched the bun after a while and just enjoyed the chicken and delicious mashed potatoes. They also have a great salad bar, which is reasonably priced. Give it a try if you are in the area. read more

Excellent deal on soup and salad bar. Great service, friendly and dilligent. Usually not too packed weekday lunches make for an excellent date. The homemade bread and croutons could satisfy me all day. I would always recommend if coming to Plattsburgh, it's right off I-87 read more

Instead of 5 stars I wish I could give this restaurant 5 flies, because that's how many flies were around my food while I was trying to eat. Would not recommend for old people, children or pregnant wemon. Service was non existent, steak over cooked probably because it was only 1/4 inch thick and the french fries had plenty of potato but not enough taste. The ranch seemed to be watered down. But the beer was kinda cold so it was alright. read more

we just finished an over 2 hour visit at the Butcher Block ! We were seated right away without any indication of a wait . Server arrived took drink order short delay, still no indication of any wait time . Drinks arrived one in a dirty glass ! After short delayed new drink was delivered. Order taken went to salad bar , finished salad , plates cleared. Waited no dinner this is when the delay became evident, no dinner..... Finally after inquiring as to when our dinners would be served we were informed there was a large party in the other room sorry for the delay. It turned into a long delay!!!! Free dessert was offered due to the delay, then it seemed like everything was delayed!!!! We all wanted the same dessert to go ! After a delay one dessert for four people arrived!!!! They made one large dessert instead of four minis !!! Well we do not all live in the same house ! Needless to say we will not be going back for a long time ! Having a little knowledge of the restaurant business do not keep seating if you can not handle the volume !!! If you do seat inform your guest of the situation before they have to ask when will our dinners will be ready! Also if dessert is offered it should be one for each guest that had to wait. read more

We had a family dinner here in the Adirondack room for about 30 people at $35 a plate. It was very pretty and the wait staff was great, but the food was absolutely terrible! The steaks were a bad cut of meat, tuff and fatty. The haddock smelled fishy like it was old, it was overcooked and dry. Everyone at our table of 7 was dissatisfied with their meal. I have eaten here on 2 previous occasions and I was also dissatisfied with my meal. This will be the last time our family will eat at the Butcher Block! read more

Brought 3 teens and had a great meal. My filet mignon was done perfectly and reasonably priced at $29 including salad bar. The teens had soup, and salad so they slowed during the entree, but liked their food so much they ate and ate. The bill was$100 which was reasonable for four people Service was pleasant and timely for a Saturday night. I'll go back anytime! read more

The portions are huge, service is on point, and the price is reasonable for the amount for our dinner. I had the ribeye, YUMMY! The soup, salad and bread bar fills you up, so go hungry. Jay and Lindsey provided exceptional service too. Great find. read more

The renovation to The Butcher Block gives it a bright fresh look, but they remain clueless on the menu, which continues to go downhill. We've had dinner there dozens of times over the years and 3 times the past few months, each time worse then the last. The Butcher Block is disguised a steakhouse but with food equal to a chain restaurant (Outback). Everything we've ordered has tasted processed, factory/ frozen, reheated and served. A few examples; 'Beef Tips' which were very disgustingly tough and lacked flavor. Ribs, which tasted like the packaged 'heat & serve' ribs at the grocery store. After the remodel we went back again, but decided to stick to burgers. I don't mind spending $13.95 for a good steakhouse burger, but these tasted like a factory made patties. I'm not sure why they ask ' how would you like it cooked?", because all 3 burgers arrived the same. The rolls were not warmed/toasted but tough and cold. The fries were equal to cheap fast food fries. We left with with our plates mostly full and over $80 tab for; 3 burgers, 1 soup & salad bar and 3 drinks. Besides the disappointing food; we were seated next to a table of loud 'happy hour' patrons with children who banged on the table endlessly. The acoustics made it difficult to have any conversation. The dinner was not relaxing or enjoyable. I gave it 2 Stars for the the service and the atmosphere, still wonderful. But, the lousy burgers, the $80+ tab and the obnoxiously loud room, they lost 3 stars and our business. read more

The worst meal I have had in years. The salad bar needed to be replenished and tidied up. Party of 8 and everyone complained that the food was extremely salty. Overpriced for the quality. We could have eaten pretty much anywhere in Plattsburgh for the price. Not to mention we froze. The guests at the table next to us wore their coats. I used to love the Butcher Block unfortunately I won't be back. read more

Stopped in while in Plattsburgh for the early bird special. Wife had braised beef tips and my daughter and I had the chicken bruschetta.Food was excellent and the restaurant appeared to be very clean. The early bird specials from the hours of 4-6 PM were well worth the money, and were very filling. Wait staff was very informative and attentive. The salad bar was delicious and could have made a meal on that in itself.Atmosphere was pleasing to the senses. When in Plattsburgh again I will make another stop there. read more

Found this little delight by accident during an overnight pit-stop en-route to Quebec. Stopped first for drinks and bar-food, returned on the way back for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed each experience. Both times the place seemed busy with locals who were enjoying themselves. Our first stop happened at about quitting time so their was a good sized after-word crown who contributed to an upbeat casual and friendly atmosphere. The service, at the bar, and in the restaurant was cheerful, prompt and courteous. The sandwiches were well prepared and the salad bar was (small) but fresh and adequate. The home-made bread was particularly good. Can't comment on the "real" food but if it's as good as what we had, then it must be OK. Plus, it's right off of Interstate 87 with pretty easy access on and off. Recommended! read more

Poor service from a disinterested waitress but that may have been bad luck. The real problem was the steak. Overly Tenderized, tasteless filet mignon; a dried out baked potato and cold corn on the cob. Salad bar was mediocre, sloppy and dirty.. I will never give another penny to the Butcher Block ever again. We had the pleasure of taking my sister out to lunch after her college graduation and made a 1 p.m. reservation for lunch. When we arrived, there was a recently-printed sign on the front door saying they would not be serving lunch after noon, a pretty sneaky move considering the school's ceremonies ended at noon, mind you no one had mentioned this to us when we called. It being graduation weekend, we knew we wouldn't have any luck going anywhere else so we were forced to stay. The menu was grossly overpriced and the food was pretty mediocre for what we paid for. Our waiter was absent most of the meal, which is ridiculous considering the 17 percent gratuity that was automatically added to our $200 bill. Later that night we went to a low-key pub and had a much better meal and paid less than half the price for dinner - they didn't seem to care what time it was and the menu remained the same. read more

Hubby and I were staying at the hotel across the street and our room key card offered 10% off our meal at this restaurant so we gave it a try. Firstly, the waiters/waitresses were excellent. We never wanted for anything as they were so attentive and apologetic when something took too long to come out. The salad bar was good with a lot of choices of toppings for the salad. They had different kinds of bread but it wasn't sliced so I wasn't going to hold the loaf with my hand and try to slice off a piece. I opted for some of the rolls they offered and they were ok. They also served cream of mushroom soup which was excellent - I should have gone up and gotten more of that. We ordered the rib eye steak with our respective potato and it came with fresh green beans - the steaks were excellent. Cooked to perfection and very juicy and flavorful. The potato was great, the green beans were great. All in all a very good meal. read more

While visiting a relative at the hospital, my wife and I had skipped lunch and needed something substantial to eat before we returned to the hospital. We stopped at The Butcher Block around 3:30 PM to find that we only had a small "tavern" menu to choose from before 4:00 PM. We chose one of only two steaks on the menu, an 8 oz New York Strip. The other called the "Butcher Block", we were told was a "smaller steak marinated in Teriyaki sauce". Our only choice of sides was French fries or rice. You could get the salad bar if you wanted to pay an additional $6.95. First of all our diet Pepsi tasted like a store brand soda. And while my wife said her steak tasted very good, I could not taste mine. I will say that the steak fries were cooked perfectly. About halfway through the meal I had finished my drink and wanted another. I could not get her attention. Later while I was still eating, the waitress grabbed my wife's empty plate and took off before I could ask for more to drink. When she brought our receipt, she tossed it on the table and immediately turned to get the attention of another employee without a word to us. I looked at my wife and said "Here's you hat, what's your hurry!". Once we got outside, my wife commented that someone should suggest this place for a Restaurant Rescue with customer service as their focus. read more

I ate here with friends and had a great experience. Portions are generous and between the sides and the salad bar, included with the meal, we left sated and satisfied. We were immediately greeted warmly by the hostess, who sat us in the beautiful greenhouse dining room (there's another very rustic dinging room with lots of wood and warm tones). Service was impeccable, which is unusual for a place with a salad bar, where waiters usually forget they are still waiting on you. Our server's name was Mark and he was very gracious, knowledgeable and efficient (Whenever one of our beverages was getting low, he was there with a new one before we had to ask). I had the small Rib-eye, which was still huge and far more than i could eat. My steak was well seasoned and very tasty. My friends had the Prime Rib and a chicken dish, which they loved. We shared an incredible chocolate desert which was more than enough for the three of us. Even the coffee was good and tasted fresh. The prices are reasonable for the value they offer and I will definitely return the next time I'm in Plattsburgh! read more

It's one of the better places to eat. They have a salad bar, which is good for lunch. The main courses are usually good and somewhat interesting. I've had chicken, steak, and pork and they have all tasted OK. Plattsburgh isn't know for it's gourmet dinning, but I think this is one of the better places in Plattsburgh to eat. Mother's day 2015 - 1. called for reservation and was NOT told it was buffet only. 2.After being seated we were told we could not order from the menu. 3. serving breakfast in the buffet at 1:30 pm. 4. Salad was ONLY lettuce with fruit. No salad toppings. 5. Dessert was in the middle of the buffet. 6. Only serving gravy with no potatoes. 7. On a crisp, windy March night, my collegiate rugby team and I decided to fuel up with a nice dinner before embarking on a brutal 5 game stretch the following day to qualify for the national tournament. Slated to play a good amount of minutes, I decided to stay away from red meats and instead stick to grilled chicken. As my teammates enjoyed their soups, salads and ribs, I was content with my grilled chicken sandwich...at least I thought. Fast forward a few hours and I was awoken by my stomach tossing and turning at 4 in the morning. It was all downhill from there. The next 24 hours consisted of constant attempts to replenish my system with fluids and pepto bismol but to no avail. I made countless trips to the bathroom and spent the entire day pale as a ghost thanks to the wonderfully undercooked chicken courtesy of the Butcher Block. Every hour or so I was forced to muster up enough energy to walk down the street to support my teammates and cheer from the sidelines, only to return right back to the toilet following the final whistle. The Butcher Block robbed me from some of my last collegiate rugby games and I highly recommend that anyone visiting Plattsburgh, NY stay far far away from this place. read more

Not happy at all , & do not feel good after eatting there . Found bad food on salad bar & we told them . You would think they would pull that item & check it out but no they left it . Dinner was way over priced & not good at all . I had the prime rib , it had very little meat , more fat and slime than anything else . My husband had the stuffed haddock & the stuffing was cold & very little fish . prices is very high the beef $25.00 the fish $21.00 . The food was just very very poor at best . The salad bar is over rated with the spoiled salad & cold soup . Service was not anything to right home about . If we would have looked around we would have left before we ordered as it is not clean . We thought that we would fall on the way to our table , floors nasty with grease & dirt , table not clean & our drinking glasses were not clean nor was the silverwear or our napkins .
