I've been wanting a really good bun rieu and have been searching for a one that beats a homemade one with the works.. the last few weeks I've ventured to two places, one way on the SE side near Hobby and this one! The place had a steady stream of customers the whole time we were here, the lady spoke mostly only Vietnamese.. luckily I could get away with ordering and understanding! I ordered two bowls, one for me and one for my 5 year old.. it came with a heaping stack of veggies! The broth was flavorful, seasoned almost perfectly. I naturally crave the salt and the shrimp paste (mam rouc) for that umami flavor whenever I have a good bun rieu, however this one was seasoned pretty perfectly. That and the fact that the mam rouc was a bit watered down, I was hoping for a paste but got a ketchup bottle where it came out as a liquid. Weird.. didn't hit the spot at all but I found I didn't miss it like other places. They used a thinner strand vermicelli noodle, topped with blood cubes, a large chunk of cooked tomatoes, large slabs of rieu (usually shrimp, minced meat and egg) and some Vietnamese ham and tofu. It was delicious, there was a good ratio of toppings to noodles and it hit the spot. The broth was clear and very clean/not greasy. The toppings were cooked perfectly. I got mine with snails aka oc and I got my son the one with riblets aka suon. First time he ate blood cubes.. I told him it was "purple jello" and he enjoyed it. Gobbled down a small bowl, very impressed, he usually mostly likes only pho. I was stuffed after my bowl, and I didn't even use a quarter of the veggies. We had a lot leftover. Definitely a good place to check out if you're looking for some bun Bo hue (Vietnamese spicy beef noodle soup) or bun rieu (Vietnamese tomato minced crab noodle soup). Would be nice for a cold evening or whenever I'm craving some comfort food for sure! read more
