This is my favourite pizza place for lunch, which has a cozy and friendly ambience. We ordered an Italian burrata, meatballs, and a quattro formaggio pizza, all of which were freshly made, flavourful and tasty. The meatball dish was one of a kind and to die for. [Wildebeest Pizza] We came here with a group of 7 on the second day of their soft open. It was a Saturday night and was packed as expected. It was a half an hour wait but seeing as we didn't have anywhere else to be, decided to stay. This place is run by the same owners as Wildebeest so I was expecting a protein-filled experience. Bufala occupies a space on the corner of 38th and West Boulevard which used to be the Mac Shack. The abundance of windows makes the place spacious and bright. Seating is made up of a long elevated, shared table in the middle surrounded by booths and individual tables. The ambience was trendy, lively and upbeat - not what you'd expect in the heart of Kerrisdale. Pizzas here are made to order. You can see them tossing the dough and laying on the scrumptious toppings before they go in the oven. Between the 7 of us, we shared the following pizzas - the Margherita, Funghi, Bacon and Clam, Oxtail and Kale, and Finocciona. Each one was roughly 12 inches in diameter and equally mouthwatering and oven-fresh. If I had to pick one, the Finocciona was my fave. You also have the option to add chilli and parmesan infused olive oils - liquid heaven in a bottle! We also had 2 starters - the seared humboldt squid and sausage and the meatballs (came with 3). Both were tasty but the squid was the winner. The service here was excellent. Servers kept coming by to make sure we had everything we needed. Given this was a soft opening, they seemed to have everything figured out. Appies ranged from $8-14 and pizzas from $13-20. Reasonable? Yup, given the quality, ambience, and location. Their washroom is spacious. However, if they have magazines available in the washrooms, are they encouraging customers to stay inside? We had the Grissini, Burrata, and the meatballs. The Burrata was fine, but the meatballs were hard and bland; we couldn't finish them. Also, the sauce for the meatballs was spicy which we didn't expect. When the server bought the Grissini to our table, he dropped one of the bread sticks onto our table and he said he would bring us a new one. Then he left without wiping the table so the table was oily. When he came back, he asked us to put the new bread stick onto the other plate at our table to 'save space.' I was surprised to hear he said that because our table is big and their prices are not cheap. Hence, service should be included with the price. Moreover, the fact that they set the tips percentages on the credit card machine as 18%, 20%, 22% for lunch is unreasonable, since they didn't provide that high value of service with attention to details (e.g. wiping the crumbs on the seats before bringing customers to the table). Definitely worth the trip! The Westside and Rossini cocktails were delicious. We ordered the homemade meatballs as an app. It comes with 3 meatballs in sauce and ricotta and a few slices of bread on the side.. outstanding! For the main course we ordered the Balsamic Prosciutto and Calabria pizzas. The balsamic prosciotto had just the right amount of balsamic on it, you could still taste and sauce and cheese. And my husband added the white anchovies to his Calabria pizza and loved it. We chatted with the owner/manager (?) for a bit and he was super nice. He brought out the Salted Caramel Budino for us to sample, I would definitely recommend that if you want a small dessert. The texture was perfect and not too sweet. No take out option "to maintain the integrity of the product" - Fair enough I suppose but still felt like kind of a pretentious answer. So instead husband and I stopped by for a quick lunch date. We ordered a bruschetta trio for our appetizer and a Calabria pizza. Brushetta appetizer isn't really the best for sharesies - we're talking three crostinis topped with different "bruschettas." One was a minted pea with feta, the second was an eggplant caponata topped with sardines, and the third was an andouille sausage pate. The andouille sausage pate was my favourite, the eggplant was texturally missing a note for me though - I think it just needed some freshness. Soft acidic eggplant with salty sardines on top of a crostini - quite a heavy note. The Calabria was delicious. The crust was quite nice, and it was fun getting to watch our pizza be made right in front of us. The manchego and roasted garlic cloves were a nice touch. It was also nice to have the option of infused oils for dipping my crust in. Though the chili and herb flavours weren't that strong. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing. Fresh, clean environment, beautiful amounts of natural light, and a nice rustic vibe to compliment it. The pizza paddles are a nice touch, and the huge wall sized pallet winerack is absolutely beautiful. There's the option of family-style eating with the a huge long table in the center, or more privacy with a booth. Definitely a nice spot for a date night! read more

Came for dinner on a late Friday night. Place has a nice friendly vibe. We were seated at a very comfortable booth from where we could see the pizza being made. We weren't too hungry so we ordered just a funghi pizza and a pasta burata to share. I can honestly admit that of the many many pizzas I've tried, this has to be a new firm favourite. The crust was absolutely beautiful, chewy, doughy, crispy and steeped in flavour. Various oils are provided which goes great with the crust. Decent size with a good amount of topping. It's quite pricey for a 12" pizza, but worth every bite. Unfortunately, when the pasta arrived, we were pretty surprised and underwhelmed by such a frugal portion. Clumsily tossed into a cereal bowl, such a serving that lacks this much care and finesse could easily pass as a kid's meal. For $24 one would expect a far more generous helping. Its saving grace was that it was heavenly, but didn't we yearn for more. The mule cocktail was also very nice. Good variety of cocktails and wines. We have eaten here often. A year ago I would have given it 4 stars. However, I have noticed this place is looking a bit tired on a few levels. First, some of the newer staff make no effort to greet you with a smile. (One guy server was without a hint of friendliness or interest.) Also, when our first server went off shift, there was no hand-off. She just left and a few other servers eventually came over to take up the slack. Secondly, they have had the same menu for a very long time. As this is quite expensive pizza, I would hope they would update it from time to time or offer a few specials. Excellent dining experience tonight at Bufula River District! Party of 4 were seated in a most comfortable booth in front of the large beautiful south facing window. Started with a round of drinks and the burrata bruschetta, arancini with pesto and meatballs. What a great starter set, the server kindly suggested adding another 1 piece arancini to our order so we did not have to share - good thing as they were so delicious. The drinks were well made and went down smooth. With our dinner the server suggested the Antonella Montefalco and it was a perfect pair with the Calabrian pizza and my heart salad - kale Caesar. Seriously - Get This Salad with your pizza. Totally spot on food pairing. Finished up dinner with the ice cream sando and a caramel popcorn gelato. Bufala took over a place I really liked,.. a semi fast-food Mac and Cheese place that was awesome. Unfortunately that taints the experience a bit.. its a great space in a neighbourhod that badly needs more decent food, but I'll always think it is overpriced for what you get. If you don't have that preconception, you likely wont feel that way though. The pizza was excellent, one of the best in the city. but it is of that style where cheese and toppings are just thinly painted on the crust. Service was genuine and friendly. The appetizers were good, albeit small. We went as part of Dineout and it had a dessert that was also good (but small - actually probably about right given the richness). The best pizza as voted by my party of the 4 was a bianca style (no tomoatoe sauce) with pesto. I truly appreciate more neighbourhood places in Kerrisdale where the people working are cool and seem to be into what they do there,.. this is that. A solid 4.5 stars for Bufala. I didn't have my hopes horribly high after some of the reviews, however, I was pleased and was even heard to remark "I am so happy right now" with a mouth full of dough and cheese. Bufala provided a fulfilling end to a long day of walking and errands. The serving staff was a little quirky and possibly hungover, but overall friendly. The two of us arrived at around 6:30pm on a Saturday night and, to my surprise, were seated right away. Most of the clientele were families with younger children. Not what I expected, but it was nice to see. I wish my parents brought me to nice pizza places when I was a kid! We ordered the Finocchiona (fennel sausage, green olives, caramelized onions, provolone) and the bianca Ham & Pea pizza - hold the truffle oil cause that stuff makes me gag! The server was happy to oblige that modification, lucky for me. Both pizzas were spectacular and were accented by 4 available oils - chili, parmesan, smoked ham, and garlic. The crust was on the thinner side, Neapolitan style, but not too thin so as to be soggy. Nice bite. Lots of local beers on the menu as well. Great place to eat! We went there for lunch and it was half full of people. We had friendly and fast service. To eat we had meatballs with a side of garlic toast to start. It came as 3 big meatballs in a Marinara sauce that was surrounded by some slices of garlic toast. Served in a mini frying pan. Delicious! The Basil really made the flavors come together nicely. For a main, we split a pizza for lunch- the "Quatro Fomage" otherwise known as the 4 cheese pizza. I'm not going to lie, it was awesome! Old school pizza and top quality ingredients for sure. *Above average food, TERRIBLE service* Although the pizza was delicious, our evening to celebrate our friend's birthday was RUINED by a particular server who was extremely rude and disrespectful to our group. We had clearly ordered four pizzas to share, and added prosciutto to the Pesto and Ricotta pizza. When the Pesto and Ricotta pizza was served, it was missing the prosciutto so we let our server know of the mistake. Rather than just fixing the dish, the server immediately pointed fingers and insisted that we had ordered an appetizer with prosciutto instead (we're not even sure what the appetizer she had named was because we didn't even order any appetizers to begin with). When the kitchen added the prosciutto that was missing to our pizza, she served our dish while again, insisting [in a rude and aggressive tone, while pointing her finger at my friend] that she had ordered the appetizer with prosciutto, rather than the pizza. This completely ruined our night as not only did we feel disrespected and humiliated as customers, we were completely speechless with the server's terrible and immature attitude. Although the manager did swing by to apologize and gave our birthday girl a slice of cake, we will never visit Bufala again, and will highly discourage our friends and family from ever visiting this restaurant as we can definitely get delicious pizza from a much more welcoming establishment. Another great dining experience in Kerrisdale's Bufala, this time with their mushroom (funghi) pizza, with roasted mushrooms, goat cheese, arugula, garnished with pecorino tartufo, and bianco; and the burrata, with delicata squash, spiced hazelnuts, sage, and olive oil; along with toasted sourdough and proscuitto. Like last time, the pizza came out hot, with the flavourscape dominated by a generous helping of mushrooms, with a little help from the cheeses, and topped with a generous amount of arugula. All this was backed by the rich, creamy (but not heavy) undercurrent of the white sauce. The ingredients were fresh, their flavours sharp and pronounced, especially the earthier mushrooms. The burrata had nuttier flavours and softer textures, again made with very fresh ingredients, and went nicely with the saltiness of the prosciutto. This was my second time at Bufala and it was well worth the return trip that lived up to the first visit the year before. We went to Bufala mainly becasue of the good reviews they've been getting. So today I came here with a friend of mine and we started off with their well known "Kale Caesar Salad". Wow! From my first bite, I confiremd that the reviews weren't lying. From what I could taste, the combination between that salted egg yolk, kale and cheese, was beautiful. We then ordered the pepperoni and Pesto & Ricotta pizza. I wont comment on that pepperoni because in general, pepperoni pizza is too basic (my friend didn't know anything about pizza). The Pesto & Ricotta wasn't off the chart but it was better than good. It wasn't as salty as I expected which was a good thing. Love the dough and I left no crust behind. This is a review of North Vanc location - Edgemont. Odd menu . All the Happy hour drinks have Campari in them . This orange theme continued on their pizza with oranges and eggplant . Drink menu - no martinis or vodka drinks listed , they do not serve Caesars . Regular menu - lots of pizzas , but really do we need another pizza place ? The Pizza was ok . Only 2 meat dishes , approaching $40 each . Kale salad was excellent . Would be nice to have some more protein options -chicken , fish . All carb menu . Risotto balls were bland . I've tried a lot of the new pizza places in the city and this is hands down the best! The other places are really going to have to up their game with this kid on the block making some of the best pizza and Italian appies in the city. I took my food group here of 8 people and we shared 5 pizzas, 4 or 5 appies and two desserts. All dishes were excellent. Service was also great! I find a lot of these new places have pretentious service such as Don't Argue and have that hipster I could care less about customers mentality. I ate at Don't Argue two nights before this so the comparison was fresh in my mind. This place wins hands down!. They pride themselves on good food and good customer service. This is far better pizza than Via Tevere, Barbarella or Nook. The flavours these guys are putting out are so unique the other places just don't compare as these guys are in a league of their own far ahead. For starters we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed Kale Caesar Salad Green & purple kale, parmigiano reggiano, anchovy, bacon , Seared Squid & Sausage |Humboldt squid, Calabrian sausage, caponata, watercress , Gnocchi | Polenta gnocchi, braised oxtail, English peas, mint, asparagus, goat cheese , Burrata Italian burrata, veal tongue, charred scallion, parsley , Meatballs | House recipe, ricotta, basil . I will be dreaming of those moist meatballs so succulent and melt in your mouth goodness with fresh marinara and a bit of ricotta I believe on top. Most tender squid I have tried. The least fav at our table was the Kale Caesar salad but I personally enjoyed the flavours. For pizzas our group ordered Funghi Shimenji & portobello mushrooms, goat cheese, watercress, pecorino tartufo, bianco , Bacon & Clam Savary Island clams, potato, thyme, pickled mustard seeds, bianco , Oxtail & Kale Braised oxtail, spicy peppers, aged cheddar, parsley, marinara - , Finocchiona Fresh fennel sausage, castelvetrano olives, caramelized onions, smoked provolone, marinara , Carpaccio , Bresaola, grana padano, gribiche, horseradish, arugula, bianco. The two desserts we tried were an amzing basil strawberry panna cotta with pine nut praline and lemon zest and a melt in your mouth chocolate almond torte with marscapone cream. Both were flavour parties in my mouth. I compare sex to food as both should be passionate and this was better than sex with any Vancouver man. The reviews are right, the service here is off. Bufala really, really wants to be a family style restaurant. I don't hate the idea, but wish it was a suggestion/option. Our hostess sat us with a somewhat ominous explanation that they are a family style restaurant: we should plan to work with our server to all share things, because the way the kitchen works things come out sporadically so it's best to be sharing (implied: or else be left waiting). Its unfortunate the "family style" thing came across as anti-customer all night... we tried to comply. Our remorseless server used it as the reason one pizza came out 20 minutes after the others (some shaming there for not sharing more than we already were), and also the reason she thought we were being petulant for making one minor correction in the splitting of our bills ("we're family style, so usually we don't split the bills like this"). We offered to make the adjustment ourselves, but she sulked off to do it anyway. Management should help the front of house staff out and commit to the family style gimmick more. Add an explanation on your menus, your website, revise the menu so it's impossible not to share (larger pizzas?). It's cumbersome the way it is, and patronizing. Side note to management: label your beer taps! The food was 3-4 star, excellent meatballs to start, but skip the breadsticks and the gnocchi. The pizzas were pretty good, I ordered the margherita and it was lacking (bad tomato sauce-cheese ratio). Other pizzas were enjoyed, though! "It looks like a beer commercial in here" noted my husband gazing at a plethora of plaid shirted, bearded gents and bo-ho chic gals. Waiting for a table we spent 10 mins. at the bar where I was lucky to chat with the chef and observe his dough stretching technique up close. A scratch pizza maker myself, I was intrigued to try this new local. The great pizza, fun atmosphere and the super attentive, friendly staff made the evening a pleasure. Before tip, we spent $65 for a shared appetizer (Seared Squid & Sausage) and a shared pizza (with arugula), two beers and two wine. Will try the Kale salad next trip. Bufala was on my to-try list for several months and I finally stepped in for a weekday dinner on Tuesday evening. My friends and I have been been intent on trying all of the new pizzerias that have popped up in town and we were quite happy with our experience here. To be honest, this is an occasion when I'd love to be able to use half-stars...this would be a 3.5 for me. We were seated at the end of the long communal table and were served some sparkling water fairly promptly. As a party of three, we ordered one appy and two pizzas. The meatballs came out quickly and they were tasty--the sauce is something special. I wondered why our server came back with a spoon for us but quickly learned that you won't want to waste a drop of the tomato sauce in the pan. We had the Margherita and carpaccio pizzas. Both were good but the carpaccio stood out (sometimes, I go somewhere and the Margherita turns out to be the winner, even though it is so simple) with an interesting blend of flavours. When ordering, if you are a small party, pay attention to the menu and try to choose at least one marinara and one bianco sauced pizza so you can experience both flavours. To drink, I also had a glass of prosecco, which was very nice and my friend had the Dageraad which is a Belgian style blonde ale on tap. The ale was really good and upon further research, I was pleased to find out it is brewed locally in Burnaby and they are going to have a tasting room open. The service was quite good once we were seated--recommendations for food were enthusiastically given and plates cleared quickly. It appeared that they had three people handling the front of house and we had to wait a bit upon arriving to be greeted but the hostess/server seemed to have everything under control. I noticed that a couple arrived after us and they waited for a while ("while" is probably more than 2-3 minutes in such a small space without a "hey" from anyone who is working). The hostess came to take us to our seats but didn't acknowledge the next two people waiting, which was a little weird. I found it a little awkward but at least everyone is treated the same! I don't think it is the fault of the hostess...she was very busy. The last thing I'll say is that, as an effect of the location, the crowd is a little staid. I think people were happy with their food but it's not an East Van-anything-could-happen atmosphere. It's not a reason to not come here but if I were to describe this restaurant to a friend, I would definitely make note of this subtle detail. read more

I was craving pizza so decided to check this place out! They don't take reso but on a Sunday at 7:30 the wait was only about 10 mins for the 4 of us. They have a very tiny bar table but looks super cute! A big communal table in the middle and then small tables everywhere else. I liked how they featured Italian Campari/vermouth drinks for about $8-$10 and have a good list of cocktails and wines. Warning tho: this place gets hot! I guess it's from the pizza ovens. We ordered 2 salads and 3 pizzas to share. They were all very good. The mackerel salad was my fav! For about $12 you get a smaller appy size salad but there were A Lot of amazing ingredients in. From lots of delicious mackerels to potatoes, apple slices, to cucumber slices and endives. It was delicious. We also ordered the arugula salad. That one was pretty good also. Just thought the portion could be a bit bigger. For pizza. We got the anchovies marinara, margherita, and the ham and peas. All perfectly made. Everyone enjoyed the pizza. I was here about a week ago and although I had a nice time, the pizza really wasn't the best I've had in Vancouver. The Bufala cocktail was delicious though. It's very very bourbon-y so if you aren't a fan of that then I'd avoid this one. But you probably are, so have at it. It comes in a cute little glass with a piece of orange rind floating in it. I'd definitely get this again. I went with the Margherita pizza because that's usually my go-to for fancy pizza nights. It was pretty good but it was lacking something in flavour. The crust was great, but I think the sauce needs something. The cheese was perfectly buttery and delicious. My mom and grandma split the Funghi pizza and they really liked theirs. Hopefully Bufala sticks around because I can see us coming back here for sure. read more

What we need more in Vancouver are good pizzerias open for lunch. When I have a hankering for some Farina or Barbarella for lunch, there needs to be a place to fill that gap unless Farina wants to start opening at noon which would be the best! Bufala, new in Kerrisdale of all places, might be that place if you don't mind trekking all the way there. Run by folks from Wilderbeest (I noticed some of the servers were the same), Bufala is a surprisingly airy and comfortable spot. It has a couple of high top communal tables in the centre surrounded by a series of smaller tables in an L shape. We were here just after noon on a Wednesday, and it was almost full and quite lively. We got the last two top right by the door and it was still pretty pleasant. They serve Vivreau water but charge $2 for sparkling which seems cheap considering it uses the same machine to dispense as the flat water. They are both free at Farina. I also had an Americano and I'm not sure what beans they use but it was very good with a nice crema. We ordered the kale Caesar, funghi, and margarita. The dressing is delicious, almost as good as the Acorn but not quite. It also had lots of bacon bits which is too bad if you are a vegetarian. It has a sous vide egg yolk on top which is a nice touch visually, doesn't do much for flavour. Funghi had a variety of mushrooms adding different textures. It was quite salty and I think they could do without the goat cheese. The sauce on the margarita was nicely seasoned and tasted like fresh tomatoes, good amount of cheese also. I like the crust a tiny bit thinner, it's pretty bready and pale here, but still perfectly cooked without any limp sogginess of your "true" Neapolitan pie. This is not for you if Nicli is your favourite local joint. Being Wilderbeest's sister, the menu is meat heavy (ox tail on pizza?) so the experience is probably even better for carnivores but I still enjoyed the friendly attentive service (we never had to fill our own water glasses), lovely open space and better than average pies. Oh, I'd recommend going with bigger groups not only so that you can try lots of different pies but also because the two tops are way too small for two pizzas. read more

This is legit my favourite pizza place in the city! The only reason it doesn't get five stars is the that service is a bit inconsistent - I guess it's just a pizza joint but I never feel particularly welcomed by the staff. Side note - if you have an issue with unnecessarily disruptive loud noises opt for takeout. The guy working the pizza oven has been slamming it open and shut twice a minute since we sat down. DROOL-O-RAMA. Fresh ingredients, often locally sourced + great drinks + close to home = one of my favourite places to dine right now. I've read a few other reviews in here where whiners complain about the "thin, soggy pizza" or that the oil hurt their poor, sensitive tummies. Oh, cry me a river and stick to Panago or your other boring-ass pizzerias - leaves more room for me at Bufala! I love the thin crusts with a hint of softness in the middle. You're eating less bread which is a bonus in my books. So many people seem to think real pizza is made of the big thick deep-dish style bready crusts. I say diversify, man. Quit filling your belly with flour-fluff and learn to appreciate the layers of gooey ingredients, enhanced by the puffy outer crusts. The woman that claims she witnessed the chefs drenching the pizza in oil is a paranoid weirdo who shouldn't bother eating pizza with her lame excuse for a stomach. I've never felt they were overly oily, and I've eaten there numerous times. The infused oil they give you to have on the side is AMAZEBALLS and you can control just how much oil to clog your arteries with, like an adult. The service is always great and the decor is clean but cozy. I adore the homemade (delicious) pickles lining the shelves. The music sound system is also really good - you can hear yourself think, talk to other people, and hear the music all at once. What a concept! SO RARE in most restaurants. If you like delicious, fresh, homemade style food with unique flavour combinations, Bufala is for you. If you like whining about how pizza is supposed to be "just so", please stay away. Been here several times. The food is good and consistent. I like that the menu is smaller. Service is good but not amazing. I like that the pizza is hand pulled but it could use a bit more charing I think. I def recommend it! A great neighborhood resto. read more

My sisters favorite pizza place, their margarita during happy hour is a good deal but their burritos and smashed peas is delicious and their duck prosciutto crostini was good too. All of their pizzas are good when the crust is crispy. It can get pretty busy with shared tables in the middle. Staff are super nice and friendly. read more

Just had dinner here, and I'd say especially for Kerrisdale, it was a pleasant change of pace from everything else around. Atmosphere-wise, it's sort of an outlier but in a good way. Servers were young (but not teenagers), cool (but not pretentious), and attentive (but not subservient). The space is very friendly and conducive to conversation. We ordered the kale caesar salad, which was as delicious as it looks, the pesto & ricotta pizza, which was so good we decided to also order the daily feature pizza, and finished with a basil panna cotta with fresh berries. Every bite was delicious. You get an entire bottle of water for the table, and they are very attentive in refilling the water bottle and individual glasses. They also checked in a few times, which was appreciated. Compared to other dinner options in Kerrisdale, Bufala is a little on the pricey side ($60 for two), but you definitely get what you pay for. read more
