Food is good, service today (Saturday) was lousy and hostile. First time customer. Here's what happened. Around 11am today I called them to place a takeout order (they don't do online orders on their website only UberEats). Got a busy signal. Kept calling and finally got through. Was put on hold and eventually hung up on. Fine. I called again. More busy signals. Finally got someone on the phone. Placed my order ($90). She asked if I could pay cash because that would spare them the credit card fees. I agreed. I said I'd pick it up at 6pm. She asked if I could make it 5:30pm. Now listen - her reason for the five thirty pick up was NOT because they were going to close around that time. She never said that. She said something about one sandwich an hour (so maybe things start slowing down, but she definitely did NOT say anything about closing before 8pm). I saw on their website they were open until 8pm, and she never said anything about closing before that time. Fast forward to 5:30pm. My wife and I are running late and leaving Petworth to their shop on M St in downtown. My wife called as we were leaving to let her know we were running late. But, you guessed it, busy signal. I knew we'd be late, but since they are open until 8pm, I figured the worst that would happen was that our order would be sitting around getting cold. That's on me. When we were 3 minutes away, at about 5:45pm, they called. We said we were running late but are 3 minutes away. To my surprise she said they were waiting for us to pick up our order so they could close. This was the first I heard of an early closure. Their website does say that they may close early if business is slow and they would update their Facebook page if they do. If they think I'm going to randomly check their Facebook page to see if they are still open while I'm driving to pick up my order worth $90 they are morons. So, we get there and my wife hops out of the car mask on and cash in hand. She comes back to the car with the order and says this. First, the old lady berated her for us being late, and Second, the old lady was mad that we didn't give her a tip. So here's my response. First, we were running late and we tried to call you, but since your phone sucks we couldn't get through. Also, I had no clue you were going to close before 8pm, and had no reasonable basis for knowing (until of course you first said that to my wife at 5:45pm when we en route). Since we were close by, my group went over to Bub and Pop's to buy sandwiches for the Nationals game later that night. It's pretty small in there but as the immortal Guy Fieri has stated, this place was definitely legit. I ordered a Roast Pork sandwich with broccoli rabe added and despite sitting in my duffel bag for hours, it still tasted great cold. The porchetta, gremolata, and the provolone can taste that great cold...imagine how good it would have tasted if I ate it right away! It's places like this that make me reconsider having a paleo diet. If I were to ever come here again, I'd get the Italian hoagie or the Jewish hoagie as my next sandwich. Hell, I'd get them both because I can't see myself choosing only one! Decided to take a break from Pokemon Go and look for a quick lunch. This place is a hidden little gem in DC. We walked in and it reminded us a lot of our college town restaurants at VCU. Guy Fieri had visited here so we wanted to try what he ordered. The Jewish Hoagie- not ideal for a first date. It's yummy but messy: Corned beef, brisket, roasted turkey, kosher salami, Swiss cheese, spicy mustard, 1000 island and coleslaw. Roast Pork- oh. my. goodness. This one was definitely my favorite. EDIT 12/17/2013: after making this review, I've had multiple fake accounts contact me with expletives about how terrible of a person I am for giving this place a 1 star review. I assume this is the owner or a close relative, but obviously someone with a vested interest in this sandwich shop. These accounts have 2-3 total reviews each and one of which is always giving Bub and Pop's a glowing 5 star review. This has never happened before in my many years on yelp - and I've given plenty of bad reviews to places that deserve it. Focus less on creating fake accounts to harass your critics and focus more on improving the taste and quality of your menu items. Now I understand why the rating on this place is so different than my experience... there must be a ton of fake reviews on here. In it was one 2"x2" piece of brisket and an average sized meatball. A little skimpy on the portions here? At least with my prior visit the sandwich was very heavily loaded down with beef. This time it was mostly a bread sandwich with a very sharp cheese topping that had a bit of meat on it. I probably shouldn't have come back after my first trip, but when my review is so heavily different than that of the Yelp community, I felt obligated to try again. The rating is not about the food. It is about how they treat their customers. You can look at my other reviews and see that I never review places this low and usually don't review if I have bad things to say unless they deserve it. Talk about making someone feel unwelcomed at their establishment. I'm trying to give you money, act like you want it. I called in an order so that I would not have to wait for my sandwich as I was busy at work today. When I got to the cashier after already waiting 10 minutes in line, the owner tells me that it was so busy that she forgot to put my order in. All I said after that was what was the point of my calling in the order. At this time, she tells me that they were busy yada yada, etc. Then the "chef" turns around and yells at me, "Do you want the food or not!" I was dumbfounded as I was not being rude or loud, I was just trying ask why they would take a phone order if they can't handle it. I have no doubt this place is popular as their food speaks for itself as I have been a very popular spot in this part of town. I eat there pretty regularly since my company moved its office in the neighborhood. But, I will not go spend my money at a place that treats their customers this way. Bub had to actually tell the "chef" to keep it to him self when I told them they should treat their customers a little nicer no matter how busy they are at the time. Dang! Bub and Pop, that roasted pork sandwich with broccoli rabe is amazing! Sure, I know have garlic breath totally fit to kill small animals, but who cares? That sandwich is so worth it. As said by another reviewer, the whole sandwiches are huge. Half of one should be enough, unless you have a powerful hunger that can only be satiated by huge stacks of delicious meat. The menu had a good variety of sandwiches, sides, and (most importantly) pickles. If you love pickles, and getting giant orders of them, you'll love this place. Almost everything is house made, including the chips...we didn't try them this time around, but we'll definitely be coming back to try other options. Bub and Pop's has a great family-owned atmosphere, something you don't get from most of the business in Dupont. Service was quick and attentive, and there is limited seating. Bonus - they're open late and on weekends, a rarity for a lot of lunch joints in the area. I have a feeling I'll be back in this week for a delicious sandwich and potato chips dinner. The eggplant parmesan sandwich is fantastic. Toasted bread with thick, breaded eggplant; a rich marinara; and a tasty hazelnut gremolata was filling and delicious. I'm pretty sure as I'm typing this my friend is on her way back to Bub and Pop's for more of these amazing sandwiches. I was first there in 2014 (when the Al Capone was still the Obama) and since then she has thought about making the two hour drive (one way) from her home to Bub and Pop's any time I mention it. And several times she's actually made the drive. The entrance is small and if we hadn't been looking for it, we probably would have walked right by it. Once inside, there are some tables for sitting but I get the impression most orders are to go. My friend swears by the Vegan Hoagie every time. I liked the Italian Beef Chicago Style (AKA the Obama AKA the Al Capone) and when I couldn't remember the other sandwich I tried, my friend politely reminds me it was "THE PORK. girl, the pork. with broccoli rabe." She rarely remembers details but somehow her keen mind recalls Bub and Pop's Roast Pork sandwich. The Bubs Italian Hoagie is by far one of my favorite subs. Having generously sliced tomatoes, the vinaigrette is what makes it so tasty. I recommended that you pick up a fork as it takes skill to handle all this deliciousness. Chicken Parmesan is another you can't go wrong with and I have heard others express delight with the tuna melt. They have all the drinks you would want along with small jars of sweet or hot peppers to add. I highly recommend trying the kettle-cooked potato chips and french onion dip. My, my, oh my! 90% of the menu is home-made and it sure does taste like it! We were welcomed by the lovely and personable owner. She suggested the Italian hoagie as well as the Gouda brisket sandwich. A little angel dropped these sandwiches off to us because they were divine. The bread was toasted perfectly, the meats were tender, and the condiments complimented flawlessly. Give this place a try if you want a full-bodied sandwich and cravings to come back. It's in Dupont Circle, but don't get sucked into all the other places within walking distance that offer sandwiches. Coming from a sandwich connoisseur like moi, this place probably makes the best sandwich you can get in DC. Of course I did my research upon going, but all the sandwich descriptions just sounded too good online. I figured I'd leave it to the experts and ask the employees instead for recommendations. I went in at 1PM to miss the lunch rush. When I finally reached the counter, I felt like I was asking the cashier to choose her favorite child! She could not decide. They are all THAT good. She said people usually come in for the Italian hoagie so that was exactly what I ordered. My food came out minutes later. As a disclaimer, this place will not be the place for you if you don't like meat or you really hate eating messy food. The sandwich was huge and it took a lot of effort to eat it, but trust me when I say it was well worth it. There were so many flavors that worked well in sync with each other and half a sandwich was plenty! I am so glad I discovered this little gem in DuPont just minutes away from my workplace. I swear I will get through the entire menu by the time I end my internship. If you work in the Dupont Circle/ Farragut Square area, there is no excuse. If you work farther away, I don't care if you have to bus, taxi, metro or even plane here, it is THAT GOOD.
