Greek mythology describes the Phoenix rising from the ashes of its predecessor. Brooklyn is all that and it's on fy-yah.
Brooklyn was born where Cleveland's used to be. Gone are the sticky floors, sticky bartop, and mediocre food. Spectacular vibe and equally pleasing service and food abounds now.
The entire interior was redone. You can actually see a differentiation between bar and restaurant and how both side complement each other. In the dinning area, now include cozy booths and more tables were added. The bar looks classier and additional seating was added as well. The courtyard just screams, "Chill" and is very inviting.
My first visit began waiting for the gf at the bar. The bartender, Adri, was quite friendly and polite. Immediately offered me some water and a menu. Me being me, I declined and immediately went for the test: Old Fashioned. It blew me away, boozie, yet tasty, and perfectly balanced.
The GF arrived shortly thereafter and observed I was quite content. I explained I had found a truly, delicious, Old Fashioned. She tried it and fell in love too. Truth be told, she likes hers sweeter and Adri was able to accommodate.
Props to Adri; for the short time we were there, the bar itself was half full and I did not ever notice any patron ever have to call out to him for a drink, he was always on top of it. How's that for service?
We decided to have dinner and what better way to taste the restaurant's style than by its sides. The menu is described by what I call Southern with Latin influences:
We ordered the cornbread, grits, crab stuffed avocado, red beans and rice, Mac and cheese and for the entrées, she ordered the ponchatrain and I had the carnitas:
Corn bread - comes regular and jalapeño, and this buttery, cheesy, melt in your mouth goodness
Crab Stuffed Avocado - crispy outside, nicely seasoned with a hint of spice!
Grits - Orgasmic. That's all I'm gonna. You seriously have to try these. Plus you can ordered with shrimp.
Red beans & rice - crazy incredible. Apparently made with their own andoullie sausage. Spicy enough and loads of flavor. Could eat this all day
Mac and cheese - not your typical mac and cheese but oh so good.
Snapper Pontchartrain - pan seared, covered in this fantastic, creamy sause, doused on top with shrimp and crab on rice and some sautéed veggies. Yeah. That!
Carnitas-yes, surprised to see this on the menu but they were so good. Shredded pork with layer upon layer of flavor and served on crispy, home made tostadas, served with the most delicious, addictive black beans I've ever had. Tell you what, the next day, I took my left overs to work, they were just as good cold (I didn't even reheat them)
By the end of the evening, needless to say, we were stuffed. Deliciousness was just had.
The staff was great too. Our server, Paul, checked on us often, but not too often. Even the assistant manager, AJ, came by to check on the guests-which even at fancy places, this does not happen. As we left, the hostess, smiled and wished us a good night.
Want to get away for the hustle and bustle of SAT/ATX? Make the drive and come try this charming, little, old gem, you won't regret it. Here, you can actually slow down and smell the roses (and all those wonderful smells eminating from the kitchen).
P.s. We liked it so much, returned on the weekend for brunch! read more
