Yes, it was move in weekend, but we came here late Sunday afternoon, and the majority of the crowds were gone. We sat down and were greeted by our server. She took our drink orders and we decided to start with chips, queso and salsa. After it was served, I had to get up and ask for place settings and two extra plates. There were 5 of us at the table and we only got 3 appetizer plates. I went to the front to ask for service ware and was told we would have to wait. Meanwhile the queso got cold. We finally got silverware and napkins but needed yet another set because there was food still on my fork. Finally tried the queso and the chips were horrible. My friend thought they were left out from the night before, i said the humidity just killed them as for being seasoned as the menu says, they were not. The menu looked great so I was excited when we ordered our entrees. An Eggs Benedict, 2 Megs Pecan Chicken Salad, The Islander and a Grilled Turkey and Tomato. The chicken salad was not chilled, not sure if it had been sitting out for a while, but the mayo was translucent. Overall, not much flavor, on a bed of greens that were difficult to eat because they were so big. There was also ketchup on the edge of my salad bowl. Not sure what others thought, but half of the sandwich was left, along with the Islander salad. I was really looking forward to trying this place out. If they were overwhelmed from the front of the house to the back, it showed. I will try this place again when its not such a busy weekend. read more

Good service, interesting art. That said, 2/3rds of us disliked our food. The pesto salmon pasta was good, I tried a bite and agreed. The porter biscuit sandwich was so bad I asked them to remake it. The second time it was less burnt but still overcooked and the batter was too unpleasant to eat. The last of us had bourbon pecan chicken. It was better than my sandwich but didn't really taste like chicken due to so much seasoning or marinade (I tried a bite of it as well) and the grits were similarly over saturated with some sort of flavoring. We made a reservation but there were still plenty of tables open for seating. Our server was very nice & patient with us. Most of us got the hill country breakfast which was very good! Heading back to SA from an early morning meeting in San Marcos, I stop off at The Root Celler Cafe for some breakfast. I got seated immediately and after a quick review of the menu I order the hill country breakfast and a hot tea. The order came out shortly after ordering and it was quite tasty. The eggs were softly scrambled, and the breakfast potatoes were nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The biscuit was a bit dry and I skipped the gravy but after adding some butter and jam it didn't go to waste. Overall, a nice breakfast spot and I'll be back to try more of the menu. read more

A cute option right off the square, Root Cellar has a small patio and inside seating. I also saw what looked like an upstairs patio but it was closed when we were there. It was a beautiful day so my friends and I sat outside. I'm not normally a bloody mary person, but when I saw the big jug of vodka marinating with all the veggies, I had to try it. Spicy style. It was magnificent! The bacon inside was crispy. Also on the specials board we saw a spiced chai marshmallow drink or something, my friend tried it with espresso and it was very good. You don't normally see fried asparagus on menus so we said we must get them. The fry on those was really great, reminded me of fish and chips. Perfect crunch but not too much breading. Our server did not know a lot of answers to our questions, and our sandwich came out a little different than what the menu had us picturing, and they gave us the wrong side, but it was good. We tried the roasted brussel sprouts as an appetizer and those were great, just the right amount of sweet and heat. I got the Caribbean Stacked sandwich w homestyle potatoes, large portion and I thought I'd had to take half to go but I pushed thru because it was so good I had to finish it. Love this hidden gem in San Marvelous! After the Alumni game, we hit this place for a nice meal. The Pork Belly and the Pecan Crusted Chicken are two favorites for us. Add the Brussels sprouts and you have a winner. This has more of an Austin vibe, laidback and just a cool place to hang with friends. It's in the heart of the downtown area, which is party city for this college town. Service is good, but remember with it being laid back, nothing happens too fast. We visited The Root Cellar Cafe on a Saturday after a hike with our two German Shepherds, and it was a fantastic experience! The waitstaff was incredibly friendly, giving us a great table on the patio with plenty of space for our large dogs to lay down. They even brought out a water bowl for each of them, which was a thoughtful touch. I ordered a mimosa, which was delicious and very well priced. My husband had a Bloody Mary, which I felt was a bit overpriced. However, the food more than made up for it. I had the half size biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon, eggs, and toast. The Texas toast with the perfect over-easy egg was delicious. While I think a side order of bacon should include more than just two pieces, none of that mattered once I tasted their biscuits and gravy. They were the best I've ever had! The biscuit literally melted in my mouth, and the jalapeno cream gravy was out of this world. I can't even express how good it truly was! My husband and I visited for breakfast after reading a couple of reviews that were highly complimentary of the French Toast. Sadly, we were disappointed all the way around. The restaurant smells musty when you walk in. We were seated at the very back of the establishment In hard, uncomfortable chairs. Our small round table had two side leaves that had been extended out one too many times. When the food arrived, the waitress had to set our food toward the middle of the table so the dishes would not slide off! LOL! My biscuit was so hard I couldn't even break it in two. Fresh but VERY simple, and the dressing was a bit too tangy/sour for my taste - Meatloaf: Yay, was pretty tasty, but had the consistency of a burger. - Eggplant sandwich: Yay. My mother-in-law got this and said it was tasty **Side dishes were very underwhelming. Nay, not worth it. I got the grits, and it was bland stove top grits with cheddar sprinkled on top.
