Stopped in on the way to Austin as a few months ago tried to get a Manske roll and they had sold out. What's a Manske roll you may ask--Just one of the best cinnamon rolls you will ever taste. Always served warm. Today no problem getting a four pack to go. Our Gil-a-Monster burgers served without a bun were great too. The onion rings and tater tots were cooked perfectly as well. If you are in San Marcos Texas and need something sweet or a great burger Gil's fits the bill. read more

What a change, I can't pin it down, it the food just isn't the same. The burgers weren't what they have previously been. Perhaps it was because I really had a great burger down the street at Jax. Whatever the reason, we probably won't be returning here. read more

Not a gourmet stop by any means, but man do they make a mean burger. My patty melt was cooked to perfection and set off my the buttery toast in spectacular fashion. The seasoning on the melt, as well as on the fries, were a great compliment. I wouldn't, and shouldn't, come here every day, but they tie with Taphouse for SM. If only they had some decent beer.... read more

The manske rolls are not the manske rolls from 30 years ago. I was traveling through San Marcos and decided to buy eight rolls to take to family. They were stale and rock hard and had to be thrown away. They had to be weeks old. Wasted $38! read more

I'm not typically a fan of cinnamon rolls, but my friends are, so I tagged along to Gil's--and I'm so glad I did! We ordered one regular Manske Roll and one with chocolate, and both were absolutely delicious. While we all agreed the original Manske Roll is our favorite, we're already planning to come back and try it with ice cream next time. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the ambiance felt so homey. Knowing this is San Marcos' oldest restaurant made the experience even better. The historic vibe is definitely present, and it's such a cool way to enjoy a piece of local history. Highly recommend checking out Gil's if you're in San Marcos--it's a true classic! read more

My husband and I live in Austin and he has raved about Gil's for years and wanted me to experience the burgers. We got there and were told the server would be over in a few minutes (more like 20). Gave her our order and waited for about 45 minutes and nothing. My husband got up and told her that we were leaving since we still had not gotten our meal and have never waited almost an hour for a meal. The server then said sorry we have a small grill and then had the nerve to ask what was your order? That definitely put me over the edge because how hard is it to make hamburgers. I really want to try again but this definitely put a very sour taste in my mouth. read more

A San Marcos staple! Always good burgers, tater tots, and onion rings. The service was good. He was the only person there, and he was quite attentive to all our needs. The ambiance is AOK, but I miss all the old stuff for certain. The Manske Rolls are always a delicious repast! read more

I got the Gil-a-Monster, my patties were the juiciest and most tasty that dare I say I've had in San Marcos!! Tots were perfectly fried!! And the MANSKE ROLLS!!! UGH!!! SO GOOD!!! Gil's Broiler you did not disappoint!! I attended SWT from 83-85' and Gil's was one of my fave places. Almost 40 years later, they are still the bomb! I had a 1/2 LB burger hicory style, an order of Frots (fries & tots), and a Manske roll with bacon! The burger was cooked to perfection, as were the Frots. I savored every bite! I brought the Manske roll home for later. 30 secs in the microwave & heaven awaits! ***Big bonus points to the considerate server that brought my order out to me so I didn't have to leave my pup in the car! read more

Great hamburger grill in downtown San Marcos. Friendly staff at the counter. We had the double patty burger and it was filling! Cooked perfect with your choice of condiments- including grilled onions. Roll is soft and the icing on the cake was a Matske roll- similar to a cinnamon roll. Hubby has been wanting to get to Gil's for a while so he went and brought me and Mom lunch. We all got the 1/2 pound burgers with different toppings. Me and Mom should have had no mayo but it was on there. It didn't ruin it for me but I really don't care for mayo. I had onion rings and hubby had gator tots. I took a picture of the onion rings because I couldn't find one. They were pretty good, and tater tots were ok. Finally, they had their rolls but one get one so Mom and Hubby enjoyed them. They were so good, they forgot to leave me a bite to sample. The service was ok, just hate they messed up and added mayo so I didn't get the full effect. Oh well, we will be back. read more

Good burger. Very good onion rings and sweet potato fries. Place had kind of an old tavern feel about it with a pool table in the back and darts. Service was excellent. Staff was friendly. Gil's Broiler is right off of the square in San Marcos they offer burgers and the famous Hanske rolls. You can get the rolls single or in a four pack and they offer various toppings. I ordered it with the coffee ice cream they were unfortunately out of the vanilla. It was a great pair the coffee ice cream didn't have to strong of a coffee taste either. They have very reasonable pricing and the rolls are a good size. Great place with friendly staff with plenty of seating. read more

Well seasoned burgers. I have been coming here since I was a kid. Interior has changed completely. Manske rolls are to die for.

BEST CINNAMON ROLL EVER!!!!! It was so gooey, warm and delicious!!! But they run out quick sometimes so go early! (You can also add toppings to the cinnamon rolls) Burger: so delicious! Smelled and tasted so fresh. You could tell it was made right after I ordered. I got the 1/4 lb (1 patty) and you could choose what style (I chose original which was: lettuce, tomato, Mayo, and grilled onions). Sweet potato fries: one of the best I've had. Still soft, not burnt and right amount of sweet! Yum! Would recommend if you're in the Texas State area! read more

Austin Fun For Kids did a blog post on a San Marcos day trip. As soon as I read about the cinnamon rolls, I was convinced to bring the fam out. Came right after they opened. There was one guy working the whole thing and he remained friendly while prompt with orders/preparing. Got the warmed roll (check in for 50% off -- I definitely did not see that before I placed the order) with a side of Amy's ice cream. It's so buttery and it's cooked perfectly. My husband got a cheeseburger just because. It was so good -- the burgers are worth the hype just as much as the rolls. Plenty of seating indoors and street parking. read more

Great burgers and manske rolls! Only issue was they were out of a lot! No sweet potato fries, no ice, no knives, no vanilla ice cream.

Gil's is the quintessential college burger joint. It seems to have been serving students in San Marcos thru at least two or three name changes. My sons have been raving about this place for years and I finally got a chance to check it out. The restaurant is very narrow and long. You enter and the left half is the counter/kitchen and the right half is seating. In the back, the left half is a bar and the right more seating. When you enter, immediately make a left and order off the monitors at the top of the wall. Make sure you check out the specials on the counter. Almost always a 1/4 burger, fries and drink. I ordered the Hickory Burger combo. They come in 1/4 pound increments. Each 1/4 adds another patty. I was a dope and ordered a 1/2 pounder. That was WAY too much and I'm a big buy. Trust me, stick with the 1/4 pounder. The Hickory burger came with some sort of Hickory BBQ sauce that was great, melted cheese that was just perfectly melted and a few stray grilled onions. The bun was toasted to perfection. This place knows how to cook a burger! The side of fries were very tasty. Not the normal bland stuff. With a self-serve fountain drink, this was a deal made in heaven and the reason most college students are so loyal. Pro-tip: Stick with a 1/4 pounder unless you are starving or trying to prove something. read more

Burger was good ! Good buns. Employees were nice. Cool old time vibe inside. Came outside to my car GONE!!! When visiting this place or ANYWHERE around there USE EXTREME CAUTION and DO NOT PARK AROUND THE CORNER AT NELSON SHOPPING CENTER. they are in kahootz with a criminal organization known as Saucedo's wrecking service. They literally watch you walk away from your car then take it from you!!! They do have signage posted but the rules are very vague on purpose. They have nothing to do with Gil's (hopefully) other that it's extremely close. Won't be ever be returning to San Marcos EVER. read more

We were just visiting the city for day and looking for a place to get breakfast. My husband happen to notice this place and walked in to check out what they had in the menu. He came out with a Manske roll in his hand. I believe the owner gave it to him for free just to try it. He let me try it too and my god it was the most delicious pastry I ever tasted!! So buttery, soft and warm and melts in your mouth. I immediately went back to buy more. Just for the record, I am a picky eater and quality is utmost to me . I also have traveled 23 countries and have been to thousands of pastry shops in the world. This one by far was my favorite desert I ever tasted. It may be because they used real butter instead of synthetic disgusting palm oils. I will definitely be going back to this place every time we are nearby. I wish they had a branch in Oregon. read more

Got recommendation to eat here for my nephew's 15th birthday. This was a perfect spot for a bunch of kids and plenty of food. Walked around the square first and stepped in to order at the counter. Not crowded, but steady flow of customers thru the night. The guy at the counter was helpful taking orders for 8 people. They have daily specials and we got a bunch of burgers, fries, mozzarella sticks, chili fries and rolls. Went to the back and there was a long table to sit at for the party. Everyone enjoyed the food and the rolls were a hit. It is an unusual set up and looked to be an old bar, but their beer selection is weak. Just bottles with not many options. The bathroom also needs some updates and work to stop a wet floor. Besides these 2 below average, I would recommend if looking for a good burger. The buns are solid and the service is great. read more

Gil's Broiler & Manske Roll Bakery - Party time - Burgers Near Me - San Marcos, Texas

First and last time I'll come here! We were told about the Manske roll so we drove in to see what it was all about. Got there around noon since they don't open til 11 am on Saturday. Looking forward to a cup of coffee and this famous cinnamon roll....I see a coffee brewer but they don't have coffee. My husband was hungry so we decided to order lunch first. He got a Hickory Burger, I ordered 3 piece chicken strip, a large order of fries to share and two drinks. I see an ice tea brewer, but guess what??? No iced tea! When our order was ready they called my name so I went to get it, no one was there to see if I needed anything else....so I waited.........when she finally came back I asked for some dipping sauce for my chicken. She said "what are you looking for"??? I said "Ranch or Bleu Cheese"....."we don't have any sauce, there's ketchup on the table". I'm not 5, I'm a grown woman who likes a little dipping sauce for my chicken strips....am I wrong?? When we finished our lunch they heated up our Manske rolls...a few bites in my husband was full and asked for a to-go box. The girl stared at him, got the box and sort of tossed it at him! $27.00 + 20% tip (when you place your order) was not worth it! DEFINITELY not a 20% tip!!!! read more

Great burger and customer service!! Sweets are amazing as well. Nice spot to get a bite to eat!

My second visit to Gil's. This holds claim to being the oldest operating restaurant in San Marcos. My first visit about 5 years ago was good, the burgers were really good. They are famous for the Manske Rolls. A cinnamon roll. I bought two cartons - and they were a bit pricy. $21 for 8 cinnamon rolls. Recommended to put in the microwave for 30 seconds. Ours is quite powerful (1200 watts) and 30 seconds was too long. I recommend starting at 20 seconds and see how that works. Great rolls, try them! read more

Made my burger without any gloves! Watched the girl who took my order touch the register, then go to the rolls on the rack, grabbed it with her bare hands, then slapped a piece of meat on the grill, again with NO GLOVES, and began assembling my burger. Needless to say I trashed the burger. I'm not getting sick. I don't care how good the food is or how many reviews you have or quite frankly if you are the oldest restaurant in town WEAR GLOVES WHEN MAKING/TOUCHING FOOD! read more

We saw this place on Texas Country Reporter and knew we had to give it a try. We went at an off peak eating time, so you would think that there would not be a crowd. We were wrong. Folks were lined up nearly out the front door - had to be a good sign. The line moved really quickly, and before you know it, we were ready to order. Luckily, we were fortunate enough to be served by the owner. Let me just say, this guy is the real deal, and is probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. Since we had never been there, he went over everything with us. I told him I had a check in special, and he said since we were new, we didn't need it. He explained how every thing was made from scratch, fresh, first thing every morning. We ordered burgers, fries, and rings. We also ordered a Manske roll, just to try them. The food came out quickly and was just as we ordered. The owner came by and checked on us a couple of times. You could tell he was very proud of his product. The burgers, fries and rings were good. The star of our meal was the Manske roll. It was so good that we ordered a 4 pack to take home with us. We will definitely return. If you are in the area, you owe it to yourself to give this place a try. read more

Gil's is old, like my dad coulda eaten here while half procuring an edumacation in whatever hell they called the college in those days. Southern Redneck State I think? He told stories of filling dorm rooms with goats off the side of the road; his buddy that had the only glass eye on campus. Dropping it inside unsuspecting buddies beer mugs when the weren't looking. Raccoons and possums tossed in the bathrooms and the light bulbs removed; just your average country mayhem circa 1950's. Today while visiting San Marcos I decided to hit up Gil's Broiler. Mom and dad had mentioned the semi famous Manske Roll over the years so I had to give it a try. By no means a comfortable destination; Miller High Life on draft among other plumbers' beer contenders. Quite a memorable experience. I give an A for effort when they could have provided better service. I picked the Gil-a-monster which came with a "special" sauce, I detected just mayo so I don't think I got what I actually ordered. Mom tried a cheeseburger with sweet potato fries and I rounded out the meal opting for onion rings, the Texas Country Reporter approved Manske roll for dessert. Amazingly our 1/4lb choices arrived a bit pink in the middle so I really appreciate the cooks not over killing something thats already dead. Slightly stingy on the tomato slices (1 thin slice of roma), quite lovely caramelized onions, with a properly cooked patty places Gil's above the standard fast food curve especially in a college town. Minimal complaints included my missing beer having to ask for it after we received our food. BTW, the Manske Roll is worth the calories. They even offer it topped with bacon! I couldn't get my mom to go for the porky topping, that just gives me another reason to try Gil's again on my next trip to San Marcos. read more
