The burgers, fried pickles and cinnamon rolls are AMAZING definitely recommend. Burgers were juicy and fried pickles were crispy not soggy.

I'm not typically a fan of cinnamon rolls, but my friends are, so I tagged along to Gil's--and I'm so glad I did! We ordered one regular Manske Roll and one with chocolate, and both were absolutely delicious. While we all agreed the original Manske Roll is our favorite, we're already planning to come back and try it with ice cream next time. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the ambiance felt so homey. Knowing this is San Marcos' oldest restaurant made the experience even better. The historic vibe is definitely present, and it's such a cool way to enjoy a piece of local history. Highly recommend checking out Gil's if you're in San Marcos--it's a true classic!

    Juicy patties!!!!

Me and my girlfriend were just looking for some comfort food around town, was looking for a chili dog as I'm from Chicago and dearly miss my first love Portillos. We decided to come in and get some burgers for lunch, service was quick and prompt, let me just say....THESE THINGS ARE THE BOMB!!!! I got the Gil-a-Monster, my patties were the juiciest and most tasty that dare I say I've had in San Marcos!! Tots were perfectly fried!! And the MANSKE ROLLS!!! UGH!!! SO GOOD!!! We love the total hole in the wall restaurant down in the city feel, absolutely will be back again.

Love Gil's! They serve a 1/4 lb with one meat patty, a 1/2 with two Pattie's, and then the three patty. There are a variety of toppings. The side orders are very reasonably priced. I have had their sweet potato fries and their rings. Both are exceptional. DONT forget the Manske Rolls. They also have various toppings and are delicious. They must be served warm as per instructions from Gil's.

Gil's Broiler you did not disappoint!! I attended SWT from 83-85' and Gil's was one of my fave places. Almost 40 years later, they are still the bomb! I had a 1/2 LB burger hicory style, an order of Frots (fries & tots), and a Manske roll with bacon! The burger was cooked to perfection, as were the Frots. I savored every bite! I brought the Manske roll home for later. 30 secs in the microwave & heaven awaits! ***Big bonus points to the considerate server that brought my order out to me so I didn't have to leave my pup in the car!

Was in San Marcos for the weekend and The Manske rolls came to mind. I had not had one since I was younger when they were being made in the bakery or being sold at H‑E‑B had to take the trip to Gil's to get my fix on and it sure hit the spot I was with my daughter who had never had one and she loved it I bought a pack of 4 for the trip home and my daughter insisted I get her one of her own as well. Delicious as always

    Onion rings were pretty good

Hubby has been wanting to get to Gil's for a while so he went and brought me and Mom lunch. We all got the 1/2 pound burgers with different toppings. Me and Mom should have had no mayo but it was on there. It didn't ruin it for me but I really don't care for mayo. I had onion rings and hubby had gator tots. I took a picture of the onion rings because I couldn't find one. They were pretty good, and tater tots were ok. Finally, they had their rolls but one get one so Mom and Hubby enjoyed them. They were so good, they forgot to leave me a bite to sample. The service was ok, just hate they messed up and added mayo so I didn't get the full effect. Oh well, we will be back.

Hanske roll with coffee ice cream
    David M.

Gil's Broiler is right off of the square in San Marcos they offer burgers and the famous Hanske rolls. You can get the rolls single or in a four pack and they offer various toppings. I ordered it with the coffee ice cream they were unfortunately out of the vanilla. It was a great pair the coffee ice cream didn't have to strong of a coffee taste either. They have very reasonable pricing and the rolls are a good size. Great place with friendly staff with plenty of seating.

Well seasoned burgers. I have been coming here since I was a kid. Interior has changed completely. Manske rolls are to die for.

Great burgers and manske rolls! Only issue was they were out of a lot! No sweet potato fries, no ice, no knives, no vanilla ice cream.

My wife had visited years ago, and a close friend had recently recommended it, so it seemed like a good opportunity to give it a try. The building itself is beautiful. We parked in the rear lot and entered through the bakery, which immediately caught our attention. There was an impressive variety of pastries on display, and the kids were quickly informed they could each pick one out later if they behaved. The restaurant also has several colorful walls and decorative displays that make for fun photo opportunities and selfies. We were seated at a large table toward the back near the restrooms. Service was friendly throughout the meal and reasonably attentive despite the restaurant being busy. To drink, I ordered the jalapeño prickly pear margarita, while my wife chose a peach, coconut, and strawberry margarita. Both had excellent flavor. My wife's drink was especially memorable--it tasted like a cross between a strawberry margarita, peach bellini, and piña colada. The only thing missing was a little more tequila, as both drinks leaned more toward the sweet side than the spirited side. The chips were slightly thicker than I typically prefer but still enjoyable, and the salsa selection was excellent with a pleasant level of heat. The kids ordered bean and cheese tacos from the children's menu, and the restaurant happily substituted fruit for rice without any upcharge, which we appreciated. For our entrees, my wife ordered the vegetarian enchiladas while I chose the fajitas. The fajitas were good overall, though the meat portion felt a bit light and seemed stretched by a generous amount of green peppers. The rice, however, was excellent and one of the better components of the meal. Before leaving, we visited the bakery. The kids enjoyed their donuts and cookie, while I opted for a guava empanada that turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. Overall, Casa Maria impressed me more with its atmosphere, bakery, and creative drinks than with the food itself. It's a beautiful restaurant with a fun family-friendly vibe, a strong bakery program, and some excellent margarita flavors. I'd gladly stop back for the pastries and drinks--and if they ever decide to be a little more generous with the tequila, even better.

With over fifty years in the foodservice business I have had the pleasure of serving some of the finest restaurants in the country. That also means tasting some of the finest foods served by these restaurants. My favorite cake ever, was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting made by the Pub Restaurant Group in the Pacific Northwest. They used toasted fresh ground spices, finely grated carrots, crushed pineapple, broken walnuts, brown sugar a little orange zest and oil instead of butter. It was always the most delicious, moist cake with flavor that lasted all night. So this Easter I ordered Carrot Cake from Pennington Cakes, was assured of the quality and ingredients used. Even assured of crushed pineapple for extra moistness. Placing the order I was convinced that the $55.00 was well spent. Well I hate to say the cake was a complete disaster. The cake was a stale fall apart dry crumbly mess with a non-cream cheese sweet gooey frosting. It was not edible. Thank God I made an Apple cake for non cream cheese lovers. It saved the day. When I called to discuss this with the owner, he nastily dismissed me as a second hand complainer with little knowledge compared to his many years in the baking business. I wonder how many different names and places he has used to stay in business this long. CROSS THIS PLACE OFF THE LIST AND NEVER COME BACK.
