Wednesday, 5-27-2016: We landed at Austin from San Diego CA then drove here to see family. My husband and I along with our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson planned to have dinner with hubby's sister & brother & respective families. It was a good spot for a reunion. The downside was that it was extremely noisy. We ordered & our food came out pretty quickly. I don't know about anybody else but I had the best fried catfish ever! The cornmeal batter was crunchy & flavorful but that fish was light, flaky & delicious! I have been craving catfish and this exceeded my expectations! I had a side of corn that was very good. The portions were generous & I ended up taking leftovers home. Yay me! Kudos to our server for working so hard for us as we were a big group of 11 people. This young lady was efficient and attentive. Willie's has gone downhill. I went to watch the World Cup at 3:30 in the afternoon. Bar is full, so we sat in the area behind the bar. No one was in this area, but we sat. A manager made eye contact and turned away. After a few minutes, I approached the bar for drinks to be told they couldn't serve me from the bar. I had to wait for a nonexistent server. A few minutes pass and a young fellow hands us a menu and walks off. We'd planned on eating too. It's 20 minutes now. Finally someone brings water. We decide to order drinks only. We are skipping dinner here now. It's been 10 more minutes and no drinks. Buda has too many nice options. Save yourself a headache and choose a place that cares about hospitality. I had to ask multiple times for service. Mary tried to make things right but there were too many things wrong including the long black hair in his hamburger plate. Second trip to Willie's. It is alright but no great. I got a fried chicken salad and it was a generous portion. The dressing was on the side but for some reason the lettuce was still creamy. Not sure what happened there but it made the lettuce less crisp, which is why I like dressing on the side. The chicken chunks were fine as well. The mac and cheese my kiddo got was white instead of yellow cheese. Be warned if your kid is picky on mac and cheese color. The mac was on the bland end with not a great cheesy flavor to it. My kiddo did not eat half of it. She did like the broccoli after some salt was added. You can pick from any of their sides. The kids meal comes with a popsicle as well. The area the kids were playing at was marked as a dog area and is right at the edge of a slop to a steep roll to a culvert. There are low bushes marking that edge but watch your kids when they go out there. I might swing by again for a happy hour. read more

My husband wanted Willie's for Father's Day. He's a huge fan of the chicken tenders and the strawberry margaritas. We've been here a few times before and it was not my favorite but today is all about Dad, so here we are. The two young ladies at the front counter were less than enthusiastic which is off putting, to say the least. Now the shining star and the absolute reason for 5 stars is our server, LESLIE. Enthusiastic, energetic, polite with a mega watt smile. Leslie was on point, quickly and efficiently bringing our food, checking on us and making an ordinary experience superb. We stopped here for a quick meal of burgers. You order at the counter, and are given a number marker so the server knows where to bring your food. The service was good, with the server delivering food, getting condiments, and asking if we needed refills. The burger was nice & thick, tasty, and cooked just like them. They also have seafood and other sandwiches. Don't forget your adult beverage, they have wonderful frozen Jack & Coke, as well as other adult beverages. read more

Been here several time. Yes, it a chain but it's consistently good, at least the one here in Kyle. We usually order the snow crab it's always good. Today, however, it was exceptionally fantastic, with a little extra spice! Soo good! Also had the blackened catfish and man, was it delightful! Seasoned really well and lightly seared, the catfish just melter in your mouth, especially after you dipped it on their new butter lemon sauce! I've been to many of the Willie's over the years, but this is the first time here. It was just as shabby chic as all the rest so it felt comfortable and familiar. Same process: order food, get your drink, and wonder why you tip the food runner if you do everything else. Well, this is the way it works these days. The only difference from the others is the EXPLOSION of road noise. This opens right up onto a very heavy service road right next to a powerful south Austin flow of I-35. It is LOUD. Get your rowdy voice on when you come here. This time, I went with the fried seafood platter which came with a couple pieces of catfish and a half dozen shrimp. Cooked on point and tasty. Also came with a side of fries and very nice cole slaw. Overall, a good meal, but I doubt I would put up with the noise headache again. Too many other spots to explore. read more

I'm not quick to post a below average review, out of my few hundred this is my fourth below average review. The concept is awful. We had 4 baseball families playing out of town and arriving at slightly different times. I counted over 30 people in line including our 4 families. They were running one register, so we stand in line and wait, separate from the folks we were meeting. I asked the manager why only one register, she's said the kitchen was behind. So you hold the line, your customers for over 25 minutes... Again, bad concept. Why not load the kitchen and let them complete orders as than can? Nope, hold the line and make us wait. This was the first time we tried Willie's and we ordered to go. The service was great. It was easy to select our meals and the employee brought the food to us without a delay. I ordered the shrimp meal, hubby ordered a turkey burger, kids ordered chicken sandwiches. Hubby and I didn't care for our meals. The shrimp was just ok. Kinda rubbery and I didn't care for the breading. Hubby didn't care for the turkey burger either, he said it lacked flavor, no seasoning. We wanted to go to a sit down laid back restaurant after having a long day of moving furniture and driving all day. When you walk in you actually order your food first at the counter then you go seat yourself wherever you want to sit. You dont pay until the end of your visit. There are tvs all around and it's a pretty spacious place. Eventually staff comes to your table for your food receipt and they headed back to the kitchen We ordered some fried shrooms (they were good but feel they took it out of the fryer to soon) and some wings. We ordered them extra crispy but they really weren't that crispy when we got them. They were ok as far as flavor but pretty small in size, but I will probably try something else when we go back for another visit. Maybe the burger next time. The staff was friendly and they checked in periodically for any refills and if we needed anything else. I do recommend the place and I will give them another chance. They just fell a little short when it comes to the cooking of the food but service was great and the place is a nice spot. read more

Fell upon this place last night. Went in and sat at the bar. It was clean and casual.....AND THE GARLIC CRAB BOWL WAS AMAZING. Only complaint was I WISH I BOUGHT TWO, and they had some small potatoes in the bowl as well. They would have been delicious in that yummy sauce. For a lady, the one pound portion was good....just needs to be a little more filling. All and all, A PLEASANT SURPRISE. Definitely a KYLE MUST GO TO. read more

All new things popping up along IH-35; I joke there are three different parts to Kyle now. Super glad to see one of my favorite Austin places just a few pads down. Almost went there but instead decided to try Houston based Willie's Grill. Known about this small chain for some years because of the New Braunfels location but never stopped in. Called to see if there was a wait as the lot was nearly full. No line so come on in! Well, sorta. You place your initial order at a counter. Then, head to any open table for full service. I looked at the online menu before the visit and found the counter menus lacking. The boudin balls I ordered weren't posted anywhere but online. Tasty bites to start off the meal with tangy dipping sauce. I was surprised at the prices. My Redfish Pontchartrain would have cost $45 at Pappadeaux. Here at Willie's $20. I found the blackening spice worked well with the Mushroom and Shrimp cream sauce. This entree was NOT on any menu except to order online. Sides could have been better. The Loaded Mashers weren't warm enough to even melt the shredded cheese. Also, the bacon bits were horribly overcooked. Hush Puppies were OK. Also added a pound of Snow Crab Legs for $17. Hmmm, way cheaper than RL. Walking out the door I left with something you don't get much of these days. A sense of value that is absent from nearly every restaurant in America. I will be back to try some other dishes. Might even bring my car club peeps for a visit as well. read more

Located off of I-35 in a very safe section of town, Willies officially has made its Kyle debut. I'm not sure what I was expecting at first as I was driving by and the sign said "Grill and Icehouse" yet very young kids running around on the lawn. Since Kyle doesn't have a good sports bar, I was hoping for a more adult themed setting. Not that I'm against kids as I have two of my own, but I digress. Just to note, the parking at the wrong time of day might be challenging. Walking in there's a line to make your order. To be honest, this almost fooled me, I debated leaving as I was expecting to sit down, look at a menu and have a couple cocktails. So let me help you out as this is actually a good idea for order speed but not as much for those accustomed to sit down first. You're greeted by the cashier, then order food and beverages and given a number on a stand. From there you go and find your seat while your order is being prepared. It speeds up the process and don't fear you can order all cocktails from the cashier, conversely ordering a cocktail from your table sometimes takes a little less pressure than people behind you waiting to put in their order. Not sure I like this system. As for the interior it's one of those attempts to looks rustic; open ceilings, cement floors, old wood sidings, 60s era signs, 50s diner chairs, etc. I found they tried a little too hard to make it downhome and it was only exasperated by tons of very young kids running around. That said, I don't blame the restaurant for unruly kids but they are an inviting restaurant as per their business model. So just be warned if you want to sit down and watch the game on one of many tvs, kids might impact your enjoyment. The waitstaff is very friendly and quick to fulfill your order. I actually added to my order when I sat down, which I didn't make at the front, and my server was quick to put it in, making sure the app came out first. That's good service. The app I got was a fried brisket, mac & cheese balls which sounded so good. Every bite had smoke from the brisket permeating the fried ball, however there was little meat and the mac & cheese was extremely bland. If I'm going to break my diet and splurge, I want something to be worth it. I had a bourbon cocktail with diet coke and it tasted off. I'm not sure if the coke was flat but it wasn't tasty. My company had a margarita which was average with a boring presentation. Alas the food came quick and was hot. I got the hickory cheddar burger with onion rings. The onion rings weren't frozen which I really appreciated. They were big, crunchy and extremely satisfying. The burger was very good as well. The meat wasn't seasoned but was cooked to a good medium while the bbq sauce added a nice flavor to the whole experience. I liked the cheddar and the mushrooms as it provided a nice balance in terms of earthiness and sharpness to cut the fat. That said, I did order lettuce, tomato and mayo b/c I wanted to go all out which elevated my experience. Please note I didn't order seafood which is part of their appeal so I can't guide anyone on the quality of that. As far as ambiance and atmosphere it wasn't to my liking however a family with younger kids might appreciate it more than I did. The food is average in terms of quality and presentation but there are some offerings that can't be found many other places like fried pickles. Drinks weren't memorable but they do the job. With so many other restaurants and places of interest popping up in the Kyle area I don't see myself coming back. read more

It was my first time visiting Willie's Grill & Icehouse. I came for a takeout and wanted to check out the inside of the restaurant in case I decided to bring guests at a later date. From what I saw, it's a nice place. Plenty of seating. There's a bar area as well. Service was fast, which I appreciated. Since I was ordering takeout, I was asked to leave the main area after I ordered and paid. I walked outside and through another door and waited in a small area for my meals. The burgers were a bit expensive. However, with Kyle growing in numbers, I understand there will be price increases. The burger that I ordered was "just okay." Not much seasoning was added to the burger when it was being prepared. I still recommend the restaurant for the entire family. I didn't check to see if reservations were needed. When I visited, it was packed full of people, so I would suggest calling ahead in case reservations are needed. I ordered two burgers with cheese, bacon, and mushrooms. read more

I love love love Willie's My friends and I bring our kids and come here a few times a week just because they have the play area outside and good food! Unfortunately this past weekend I lost my car keys here and haven't been able to find them. It moved so smoothly it's hard to tell they just opened a couple of days ago. Great staff, everyone is busy and friendly. It's a hoppin place with music going and fun decor. The food itself didn't blow me away though. Nothing was wrong with my order, but it came out a little lukewarm. The burger needed more flavor. It was a bacon cheeseburger but it just needed something. The fries were good. Next time I'll try something new. Glad to have a sit down restaurant to go to that's just a couple minutes away. We arrived late one evening and split an order of chicken wings and a cheeseburger. Both are solid choices and I enjoyed dipping my fries in ranch. I wasn't drinking that night, but some of their drinks looked pretty good. Their bar has plenty of seats because it's double-sided and we were able to watch some games on TV. Food and atmosphere are excellent at this location, my family and I visit about once a week for dinner. However the past two times the service has gone downhill. We had an early dinner yesterday, our waitress was Gracyn. We sat in patio towards the back, food came out in a timely manner! Halfway thru the meal Gracyn had asked "How is everything?" Mind you we all have food in our mouth when she asked. My wife nodded her head up and down as in food is good, our guest gave her a thumbs up. The waitress Gracyn made the comment "Cool. No words" as she rudely walked away. That ruined the whole vibe for us, we didn't verbally answer because we were actively chewing our food.
