On this Edition of Takeout Thursday we have Brooklyn Pickle (West)! Never had it before and while i was tempted by the riggies being on special today, had to go with a sandwich for the first time. Got Roast Beef/Lettuce/Provolone/ Thousand Island. Sandwiches are hard to mess up and impress when they are cold cut but the price for the size along with the roast beef being a good cut definetly make this a good sandwich and I can understand the enjoyment. Coupled with it I ordered a soup and while they didnt have the meatball medley the chicken noodle was warm and comforting and additionally they gave us a mac salad to make up for the meatball medley being ordered but not available. Love a good paprika on my mac salad and they did it well. Would go back and try something else! read more

The sandwiches are not what they use to be. I use to look forward to eating there. They have cut corners in their sandwiches. Thin sliced meat, cheese, bread. Bread doesn't hold the ingredients it falls apart as you try to eat it. I can eat better sandwiches elsewhere and or make them myself. You failed. Cutting corners on quality is losing customers! Stopped here for lunch on a long road trip. Got the BP special sandwich since its their most popular and thought it was great. I'm usually not a fan of cold sandwiches, but this was packed with meat. Could only eat half since I also got mac salad (way too much mayo) and a whole pickle. Would definitely stop here again if traveling through the area. read more

We were visting from Montreal and heard about this place serving giant sandwiches. The photos on social media looked super appealing so were were excited to try this. We came around lunch time on Saturday August 30th 2025 - Upon walking in, I noticed the menu board was written in very small font and had no descriptions so it was kind of hard to figure out what we wanted. I asked the employee for the most popular choice and she recommend the Brooklyn special which had swiss cheese, pastrami, corned beef and prosciutto. This came on a rye bread, with a type of mayonnaise and we added lettuce, tomato and onions. We got only 3 pickles for the huge sandwich which really did not seem like enough. I appreciated how much meat there was but the overall sandwich was lacking in flavor. The "Russian dressing" tasted like regular mayo. I did not see a regular reuben sandwich option on the menu, perhaps this was something you needed to request - but it would have been better to have a toasted bread perhaps or just a different sauce. Place is usually great but I recently had a bad experience that has shifted my feelings on the restaurant. I ordered a whole Brooklyn Pickle from a young staff member who was training another young staff member. When she returned the sandwich only had meat, cheese, and dressing. No veggies. What? In my numerous visits to this establishment have I ever had to specify that I'd like lettuce, tomato, and onion on the "Brooklyn pickle" sandwich. I asked for veggies and she happily obliged. I figured this would be the end of it but when I got home the sandwich had another issue. Tell me why half the sandwich was pastrami and half corned beef? Divided in such a manner that either half of the sandwich only had one or the other. That's not how the thing is made as per my understanding. Why do you have staff members who fundamentally misunderstand your namesake sandwich training other employees? Let me tell you for 14 dollars a deli sandwich better taste good AND be made properly. Good place to get soup, salad or a sandwich. I often get a turkey sandwich, just a half as it's a good sized sandwich. Sandwich is always pretty good but can get a bit messy. The service is pretty good they get busy but move you right along. There is a good amount of seating, it doesn't get too loud other than near the line at busy hours. 50 year anniversary and Brooklyn Pickle knows how to treat their customers right! Customer appreciation day with $5 sandwiches and lots of additional 50¢ specials, like pickles, sodas, chips and brownies. The line was long and people kept coming. They opened the doors at exactly 10am and the amazing staff behind the counter never missed a beat. Sandwiches were being carefully made and packaged up with drinks, chips and sweets. The inside was decorated with balloons and anniversary t-shirts were being sold. I came home with a few different sandwiches because I just couldn't choose one! I left off the condiments so it wouldn't be soggy and came home and added some deli mustard to the corned beef and Swiss with lettuce and onions and it was delicious. read more

I would give this place a 4.5/5...i do think their quality is great, and most of all consistent. I typically get a Reuben or the Special. Prices are fair and you get a ton of meat for your sandwiches. I've heard issues with the Utica location skimping on meat...definitely wont see that from the one in Syracuse. I do like their food and overall its a relaxed atmosphere and experience. I think some reviews are much too critical and get away form what we are reviewing about...and the only question we should be answering and critiquing... How's the food?!?!? It's been at least 25 years since coming here and I'm so glad I decided to try while I was in town for the week. Decided on a Reuben and clam chowder soup. Not from the Syracuse area but was just in the area for work drove by and saw this deli with a bunch of cars so I assumed it was going to be good and I stopped in. Yes the long was lying but worth the wait and wasn't a slow line. I ended up getting a whole gluten-free roast beef sandwich. Also an antipasto salad and the carrot ginger soup. The antipasto salad was already pre-made but fresh that day which I ended up having for dinner. The carrot ginger soup was a period soup that was freshly made in house Rich delicious flavors. And the star of the show was my gluten-free roast beef sandwich which was technically two sandwiches so I had two lunches out of that. The roast beef was flavorful. I ended up putting lettuce tomato, banana peppers and provolone cheese. I definitely love the pickles that were included as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

This place can move people! At least 10 people working the counter area putting sandwiches together! The meat, cheese, bread, all fresh! There is no better sandwich, anywhere. The soups are fresh and homemade. The whole sandwich is too big for anyone to finish, so I took the other half home. They offer half sandwich's, which is like a normal size sandwich. Went to Brooklyn Pickle West twice in the last month. Got BP special whole sandwich plus corn beef sandwich both times. The sandwiches were really good. The ladies there are super nice and friendly. The whole sandwich is big with lots of meat and cut in half. Half a sandwich is more than enough for one person. I took the other sandwich home. The next day I put a little bit of oil in my large cast iron frying pan, took the top slice of bread off and put the outside face down in the pan to get it a little toasty crispy. Took the top slice out then placed the remainder of the whole bottom part of the sandwich in the hot cast iron pan, put the lid on and turn the stove off and let it sit in the hot pan for 8-10 minutes. This made the bottom bread crispy and the thick stack of meat warm. When I take the bottom part out and placed the top bread piece on, I got me a hot pastrami corn beef sandwich. Warming up the meat change the texture of the meat to be smooth and not grainy. Love this place. Brooklyn Pickle West charges a little be lower price than Brooklyn Pickle East. We were at w location minutes drive to Brooklyn Pickle West location so it worked out perfect. Loved the place and the food. read more

Overall reaction was positive. Pleasant and affordable lunch in a relaxed, well-managed, and historically-interesting place. I am sure we will be adding it to our rotation of lunch eats. I only gave 4 stars because Brooklyn Pickle is a straight-forward sandwich place, not gourmet. But it's definitely nicer dining and healthier than fast food restaurants. We went on Opening Day of Brooklyn Pickle's newest location @ 600 State St., Utica NY. It was very organized despite still being in construction last week. Plenty of parking behind the brick building, where there is a strong historic vibe from the cotton factory it once was. The vibe continues indoors where it is very open, brick, and HIGH ceiling. We had the pastrami 1/2 sandwich, potato knish, chili, a bottle of water, and a walnut brownie all for $21. That is a good price to feed 2 people these days! The pastrami was lean, ample and tasty. We wished it was warm though: is that an option? The chili was fully flavored without being spicy. It had chunks of peppers and tomatoes with the beans. The beef took back stage, in a healthy way. I found the chili to be very nice. The hot knish had a oily exterior and seemed fluffier than the supermarket kind. The pickle chips with the sandwich were very mild. The brownie was sticky with a fully-baked top and moist bottom, and a taste more like walnuts than chocolate. So these items gave a neutral reaction. I'd like to try a stronger pickle and the rice pudding next time, and a green salad with either the tuna or chicken salad. BF will likely get the pastrami or roast beef, and a piece of cheesecake. Despite the initial line, meal assembly was quick and the prep person very friendly and capable. We got checked out by the (handsome & fit) owner himself! We were impressed by the system of him at the register while the prep people yelled orders to ring up. Good ears! At the left side was another register that some people went to. And on the right side seemed to be take-out orders. There were 3 sandwich prep bays going at once. Well planned. There were several kinds of seating in two areas. It felt spacious, relaxed, comfortable, upbeat. Now for the bathrooms: I always check out the lady's bathroom for a "behind the scenes" view. Sadly, the ladies'' room was dark, which I hate! It had dark brown walls and black stalls, one light, with cheap white toilets and sink. No towels - just a barely there hand-dryer. I'd urge them to repaint, add more lights, paper towel option, and modern sanitary fixtures when they get money & time. I think the new hospital will be glad to have a Brooklyn Pickle next door, and BP should get some good steady business. It's also GREAT to have Utica's cool historic downtown buildings renovated for new uses. Win - Win. Plus, BP is a local NY business. IMO, it's worth forgoing McD's or Chipotles to check out this new sit-down dining place. read more

I am a Los Angeles native. There are no shortages of sandwich places to eat out there. Craving a satisfying meal, my wife and I decided to visit Brooklyn Pickle for a tasty sandwich. This sandwich hit the spot. I need to start off by saying that these sandwiches are big! My pastrami sandwich was delicious. It was flavorful and all of the ingredients were fresh. The pastrami was stacked high and covers all corners of the soft bread. My wife had a turkey sandwich and she said, "thinly sliced turkey and flavorful". She got a half sandwich and cut that one in half to make it a little more manageable to eat. The staff here and friendly and efficient. Our sandwich maker was very sweet and gave us suggestions on what people normally like on their sandwiches. She also made sure that my bread didn't have any holes in it. Last and certainly not least were the pickles. They are delicious. I got the dill pickles and I got what I expected, a delicious, crunchy and flavorful pickle. Two words: giant sandwich I got the Vegetarian, and my eating-partner-in-crime ordered the Pastrami. They were delicious. So delicious that we ate the giant sandwiches in their entirety in one sitting. I'm extremely impressed by the entire experience. Our sandwich builder was this very sweet lady who made little wisecracks that had me LOL'ng a little too loudly in public. In the few minutes it took to make my sandwich, I noticed a man behind the counter sanitizing each tray thoroughly. After my sandwich was made, the lady sandwich builder asked my partner what kind of bread he wanted. His response was, "same as hers." Her response - Sorry, I don't remember, that was so long ago. The mac and cheese on Friday was to die for, and sandwich was so good with good portions !

We were in Syracuse for a few days and looking to find a good sandwich shop /deli. When we arrived we noticed that the place was hopping - the parking lot was packed and there was a fairly long line to place an order. Everyone was social distanced and wearing masks. The wait in line to order was not bad at all - they had four stations open so things moved quickly. Our family tried three sandwiches - ham and cheese on wheat; roast beef on light rye; and pastrami on wheat. We also tried the chicken noodle soup. First, let me say the sandwiches were all top notch! The meat was shaved and piled high (those of us that ordered 'whole' sandwiches could have done ok with a half). The vegetables were very fresh and the taste of each sandwich shrieked 'fresh'! It's been a very long time since I've had a deli sandwich this tasty or this large. The chicken noodle soup was also very tasty - it was a good home style and not like many that lack flavor or are from a can. It was truly flavorful and a pleasant surprise. We were going to get the lemon blueberry cookies and bread pudding for dessert - but after eating our food we had no room left - maybe next time! Some folks may not be pleased with the demeanor of the staff - they're not all warm and friendly but based on how quickly they are moving people through, they really don't have time to be; they certainly were not rude.
