I've been Manyyy times! And the service was bad. But today I decided to yelp about it smh. The first time I came here there was a fly in my salad... I figured it was a mishap and wanted to give it another try since it's a black owned spot and sometimes things happen. The next time I came the calamari was wayyyy salty. Even the waiter agreed that it was over seasoned but said they had a no return policy on food and drink . The following time the bartender had a horrible attitude and was arguing with a customer about the way a drink was made. Today not only are they out of half the stuff on the menu but I also ordered the salmon salad which came to the table Greasy and the lettuce was wilted YUCK! I didn't even bother to send it back. Once a favorite brunch spot amongst me and my friend group, this establishment will no longer be in our rotation. We have also warned many to stay away, as what was once a recommendation to our influencer crowd is now a hard pass. Quality and taste and portion size of food has diminished significantly. The once famed catfish and wings and collard greens (honestly, the list USED to go on) are now trash. Not worth anyone's caloric intake. I wouldn't even donate their food to a shelter. Did they change chefs? Who is working in the kitchen? The prices of mimosas doubled and the champagne content decreased so much that it took 6 mimosas my last trip to even get a buzz going. It used to take 1.5 drinks. The service used to be bearable when the food and drinks were good.. but with a horrible plate and extensive wait in between drinks, the bad service was that much more apparent. Ruined a group of 6's Sunday and after giving the place another chance (well 3 because we couldn't stop thinking about the old chef's wings and Mac and cheese), this place has been crossed completely off the list. The cherry on top? During one of the last 3 visits, the owner had the AUDACITY to scream at one in our group when he had that person mixed up with someone else. The owner must be on something because he is works in hospitality and he should not be screaming to any patron. This Fort Greene restaurant has community, soul, a surviving menu that hails some great seafood entrees as well as meat and vegetarian-friendly fare. Smoky and dim in ambiance, you either adore the atmosphere or are just there for the food. The $5 Anti-Bush menu is an undeniable staple. You cannot eat at this place without a taste of salmon burger or their jerk chicken. I would say to have a thick skin as their service is bi-polar-- either it is comforting and swift or they down right ignore you. I've been here a couple of times...Overall the food is decent but the service needs a wakeup call. I remember going there in the summer time and the AC wasn't on. They had abt 2 heavy duty fans which was ok i guess...However, the place was kind of empty yet the waiter put us right in front of the fan. very awkward....we asked for a diff table and there was some hesitation as if there was gonna be a slew of ppl coming to dine :-/... This place is great! The dollar Mimosas come in flavors like, pineapple, guava and mango. All brunch items are $13. The outdoor seating is small, but comfortable. Love the greens and the fish, the chicken is good as well, but the portion is a bit too much for one person. If I can give this place a negative star I would, I have been coming to this establishment for years and although my spirit never took to the owner, I never engaged with him and that was fine. I've told many of my friends about this place over the years and in so doing it became one of their go to spots. With that being said, the owner is a grotesque, reprehensible, disgusting, vile excuse for an owner/manager. Sunday my friends and I went after the rain subsided and got seated at a table, we waited for nearly 30 minutes before even getting water, nonetheless my friends and I didn't complain and were enjoying a lighthearted conversation. We ordered a round of drinks and fries, cool- no less than 8 minutes after receiving our drinks the owner comes out (not our original waiter which was suspicious) and begins lambasting my friends and I for not ordering bigger plates, like what!? That led into a back and forth, he grabbed menus, threw the receipt & grabbed our drinks off the table. We excused ourselves without paying. The laughable thing is the drink was $12 each which is around the same price as a full plate, there were 4 of us so had he some self control & couth, we more than likely would have ordered more rounds. He's worn, haggard, disgraceful & disrespectful and it shows. I don't wish bad for people and I won't start here however it is time someone took that place off his hands and erects an establishment that knows how to reciprocate respect! The imp needs to seek therapy, you're losing it & a Man your age should know how to separate personal life from business, it's spilling over and it's messy. Went there last night with my girl to watch the super bowl and have a few drinks but after I saw the menu I decided 2 tried the spicy shrimp with Mac and cheese and my girl d bbq spicy wings with Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was so tasteful, very cheesy both of us just loved it Wings and shrimp: well seasoned. It was spicy but not too overwhelmed. It was just "deliciously perfect". The food finally came out. The fried chicken was extra salty I couldn't eat it. They took it back and I got the jerk wings. Very spicy and juicy. Loved them. Horrible. Went here today with a friend and it was the slowest service I've ever experienced with a restaurant. When my friend and I arrived, we were seated quickly and immediately ordered our drinks. Our drinks arrived at the table next to us before the waiter realized those were our drinks. Okay, human error. That's fine. What was the ABSOLUTE WORST was the fact that after ordering our food, we waited wondering for an hour to what was taking so long with our food. Not once did our waitress check in with us to alert us about the delay but she seen us waiting. The hostess kept telling us that they're working on it. I am thoroughly ticked and disappointed with the manager/owner for his unprofessional behavior. There were 7 of us that came in on Sunday after a show. It was raining pretty hard and there was about a 30 minute wait which we were cool with. We headed towards the back to get out of the way and have some drinks while we were waiting. One of my friends pulled a chair closer to the group and the manager/owner went off on her saying that "his partners would not like it if she fell off the chair so you can't use it." We all were shocked in how he talked to our female friend, however we excused him. Well not 5 minutes later, he goes off on a waiter dropping F bombs in front of us about other patrons so we decided that it was time to bounce. As we were leaving, he started yelling and cursing at us for leaving! He was saying some very ignorant things about the way we were dressed all while we were walking out and down the street. It was absolutely horrible. Needless to say, he has permanently lost at least 7 patrons that day as we will NEVER step foot back into that place. Cat eggs consisted of turkey bacon wrapped in plantain. To much bacon not enough plantain , the plantains were not soft. Wasn't crazy about the yams but the highlights were the wings (15/10) and the mac and cheese. My friend recommended the Sea Water drink but it was just a bit too strong for me. I went to brunch with a friend who lives in the city; the service was pretty good once we were let in. Apparently there was some sort of mix up with the time listed on the website and the time they actually open. I ordered the pineapple mimosa and fish and grits. The mimosa was pretty good but the waiter can back to say the grits were not ready and I had to order a different side dish. That was a bummer but I ordered the home fries instead. I was having pretty bad day and craving for a fried chicken. I got a fried chicken with mac & cheese, duh. The dish itself shocked me in the face in every possible way. One boneless breast + side part over few greens, mac & cheese. The meat was VERY DRY, TASTELESS. The batter was badly grainy, also dry and chemical-taste-seasoned. Mac & cheese was soooooo mushy that I thought it was a weird flour soup. The service was pretty dry too, no one asked me how the dish was, no one was paying attention to my empty glass of water, not even offering HOT SAUCE. For real? And guess what? $16 including tax. It just ruined my dinner so hard and I had to get some piece from Crown Fried Chicken place. Happy hour menu looks pretty good and I appreciate boneless part. However, I will never ever visit this place again. And I think they shouldn't say themselves Southern, or train chefs and kitchen staffs from the basic. My girlfriend is always raving about their cheap and cheerful brunch where they offer $1 mimosas. I would prefer if they were just included with the meal but hey for a $1, that's ok too. So while debating where we should head for Saturday brunch, my girlfriend decided to mention this place yet again... fine! I will try it. No worries right? We missed brunch! We are late for everything so that was expected but we sat down and I looked at the menu prices and was ok that we missed brunch. The regular menu prices are cheap and cheerful as well so why not? I ordered a drink. Really unsure about the mixture that they offered for the ingredients I thought I would try it. The drink was suppose to use gold rum but it had a very distinct after taste that put me in the mind of wray and nephew. Definitely not gold rim. I am a rum drinker. So I asked my waitress if I could exchange for another drink and was quickly advised that they don't allow refunds. This however wasn't a request for a refund but simply to trade out for something I could actually swallow. The drink was pretty bad. The rums they mixed together didn't go well with each other. After getting another employee involved they were able to accommodate me but it did make for an uncomfortable moment until a decision was made. Now on to the food. We were asked every 12 seconds if we were ready to order. Some may appreciate the attentiveness but as an indecisive foodie it made me nervous and just ended up getting the first thing I looked at on the menu. I had the spicy shrimp with Mac and cheese. The shrimp were rubbery and the mac and cheese taste as if it was warmed over from the night before. My girlfriends had the fried whiting and the salmon Cesar salad. The whiting dish... I watched my girlfriend douse it with salt in hopes for more flavor;however I didn't think it was that bad. The salmon salad was covered with heavily seasoned sweet plantains. Interesting to say the least. I can honestly say it wasn't an expensive meal and o suppose we got what we paid for so we needed to just be ok with it. Maybe their speciality is the jerk chicken so maybe we should have went that route. Half way into our meals we were greeted by a large cockroach on the wall. They had the windows open so I'm going to say this is probably where this came from. However, one of the girls came to kill the roach and walked away like nothing happened. No empathy, no apology... nothing. Just blank stares. Maybe the night lacked a true manager. I'm going to say this that was it but I think my first experience will be my last. I know this place has been here for years and I would love to see it get better. Maybe they are ok with being mediocre. I'm not interested. This one waitress in particular with dreadlocks and blue frosty eyeshadow approached me and my friend to reprimand us for sitting at a table without asking to be seated, which was crazy because another nicer waiter told me that I could sit anywhere. It was even more ridiculous for her to approach us being that only minutes before my friend and I were standing in the restaurant, she asked us if we were okay and I explicitly told her we were trying to figure out where to sit. This place is not for me...I like intimate establishments . Got here around 4pm on a Friday and waited for an hour for my homegirl. The decor does remind me of old Brooklyn spots, rustic, old, and chill. It was happy hour, the bartender was attentive. Once my girl came and we got a seat, we ordered appetizers. My calamari was just OK, BUT I took it hoke and reheated it the next day and it was BOMB! My friend had Mac n cheese and something else I forgot. The place got packed and loud very quick! Too much going on. The waiter took away my drink without asking if I was done. It's loud, tight, and not for me. It was jazz night, but no one was paying the artist any mind. It was just too loud!
