My friend and I went to happy hour here on a Tuesday. We sat at the bar and ordered two drinks. In order to make conversation, the owner called my friend and I "loud" when we absolutely were not. I've been Manyyy times! And the service was bad. But today I decided to yelp about it smh. The first time I came here there was a fly in my salad... I figured it was a mishap and wanted to give it another try since it's a black owned spot and sometimes things happen. The next time I came the calamari was wayyyy salty. Even the waiter agreed that it was over seasoned but said they had a no return policy on food and drink . The following time the bartender had a horrible attitude and was arguing with a customer about the way a drink was made. Today not only are they out of half the stuff on the menu but I also ordered the salmon salad which came to the table Greasy and the lettuce was wilted YUCK! I didn't even bother to send it back. I just prob won't come back. Unfortunately it's time To keep it moving and find another place . Once a favorite brunch spot amongst me and my friend group, this establishment will no longer be in our rotation. We have also warned many to stay away, as what was once a recommendation to our influencer crowd is now a hard pass. Quality and taste and portion size of food has diminished significantly. The once famed catfish and wings and collard greens (honestly, the list USED to go on) are now trash. Not worth anyone's caloric intake. I wouldn't even donate their food to a shelter. Did they change chefs? Who is working in the kitchen? The prices of mimosas doubled and the champagne content decreased so much that it took 6 mimosas my last trip to even get a buzz going. It used to take 1.5 drinks. The service used to be bearable when the food and drinks were good.. but with a horrible plate and extensive wait in between drinks, the bad service was that much more apparent. Ruined a group of 6's Sunday and after giving the place another chance (well 3 because we couldn't stop thinking about the old chef's wings and Mac and cheese), this place has been crossed completely off the list. The cherry on top? During one of the last 3 visits, the owner had the AUDACITY to scream at one in our group when he had that person mixed up with someone else. The owner must be on something because he is works in hospitality and he should not be screaming to any patron. If I can give this place a negative star I would, I have been coming to this establishment for years and although my spirit never took to the owner, I never engaged with him and that was fine. I've told many of my friends about this place over the years and in so doing it became one of their go to spots. With that being said, the owner is a grotesque, reprehensible, disgusting, vile excuse for an owner/manager. Sunday my friends and I went after the rain subsided and got seated at a table, we waited for nearly 30 minutes before even getting water, nonetheless my friends and I didn't complain and were enjoying a lighthearted conversation. We ordered a round of drinks and fries, cool- no less than 8 minutes after receiving our drinks the owner comes out (not our original waiter which was suspicious) and begins lambasting my friends and I for not ordering bigger plates, like what!? That led into a back and forth, he grabbed menus, threw the receipt & grabbed our drinks off the table. We excused ourselves without paying. The laughable thing is the drink was $12 each which is around the same price as a full plate, there were 4 of us so had he some self control & couth, we more than likely would have ordered more rounds. He's worn, haggard, disgraceful & disrespectful and it shows. I don't wish bad for people and I won't start here however it is time someone took that place off his hands and erects an establishment that knows how to reciprocate respect! Horrible. Went here today with a friend and it was the slowest service I've ever experienced with a restaurant. When my friend and I arrived, we were seated quickly and immediately ordered our drinks. Our drinks arrived at the table next to us before the waiter realized those were our drinks. Okay, human error. That's fine. What was the ABSOLUTE WORST was the fact that after ordering our food, we waited wondering for an hour to what was taking so long with our food. Not once did our waitress check in with us to alert us about the delay but she seen us waiting. The hostess kept telling us that they're working on it. Mind you, people who came in after us got their food, ate and was digesting while we were still waiting. At this point, my friend and I decided it was too long and were gonna leave. We alerted the hostess & a male waiter told us we were gonna get half off our food. We told him no it's okay we're leaving. After this, they decided to bring our food out but we turned it away. The same waiter then told us we had to pay a dollar each for our mimosas. We told him we weren't paying anything because we were here for an hour and 15 mins with no food. I am thoroughly ticked and disappointed with the manager/owner for his unprofessional behavior. There were 7 of us that came in on Sunday after a show. It was raining pretty hard and there was about a 30 minute wait which we were cool with. We headed towards the back to get out of the way and have some drinks while we were waiting. One of my friends pulled a chair closer to the group and the manager/owner went off on her saying that "his partners would not like it if she fell off the chair so you can't use it." We all were shocked in how he talked to our female friend, however we excused him. Well not 5 minutes later, he goes off on a waiter dropping F bombs in front of us about other patrons so we decided that it was time to bounce. As we were leaving, he started yelling and cursing at us for leaving! He was saying some very ignorant things about the way we were dressed all while we were walking out and down the street. It was absolutely horrible. Needless to say, he has permanently lost at least 7 patrons that day as we will NEVER step foot back into that place. I've visited several times and the staff is always pleasant, welcoming, and relatively attentive (it can get a little busy). Any place with a happy hour running until 8pm is a-ok in my book! Wasn't crazy about the yams but the highlights were the wings (15/10) and the mac and cheese. My friend recommended the Sea Water drink but it was just a bit too strong for me. I went to brunch with a friend who lives in the city; the service was pretty good once we were let in. Apparently there was some sort of mix up with the time listed on the website and the time they actually open. I ordered the pineapple mimosa and fish and grits. The mimosa was pretty good but the waiter can back to say the grits were not ready and I had to order a different side dish. That was a bummer but I ordered the home fries instead. This is now one of my happy-hour spots. A short trek from my job in metro tech, just across from the C train, and down the block from Habana. This place, which never caught my eye before, stood out to me like a flaming shot of Cuero. Walked in, gabbed a stool at the bar and ordered a screwdriver. The bartended (Charles) saw the "long day" look on my face and made the screwdriver with extra screw. My man (Denzel voice). Chilled there for a while and enjoyed the happy hour drinks...something called "sea water" almost put me on my ass, almost. The jerk wings were pretty good but there could have been something else on the plate, like a dipping sauce or something. The fries are the kind you like. It turns out they had enough room for all of us and they stayed open late (as it should be on a Friday night). The service was good: our servers had smiles, nice personalities and were pretty attentive LOVE that...the ONLY downside was that we had to endure a bit of a wait for our food but when the food finally came....it made up for that long wait! BROOKLYN MOON CAFE HAS GOOOOD FOOD!!!!! I had the whole trout stuffed with spinach and garlic mashed potatoes- Nothing but glorious! My friends had Tilapia with lobster pancakes, salmon, yams, collard greens (they know how to make great greens y'all), jerk wings and barbecue wings (which we all agreed would be even greater if mixed together: jerk wings with barbecue sauce), fried chicken, corn, mac n' cheese (the mac n cheese was just so- so) seasoned french fries, shrimp, and crab cakes (my friend really didn't enjoy her crab cakes but she loved my trout). The drinks were good with a decent price and I must say that overall we had a great time. They allowed us to be loud and enjoy ourselves (just like the customers at the bar) and treated us kindly. The only reason why they don't get 5 stars is because they have no dessert menu. Now you would think my greedy butt wouldn't want dessert after everything we ate but I needed a little sweet to follow. Just a little sumthin sumthin! I was having pretty bad day and craving for a fried chicken. I got a fried chicken with mac & cheese, duh. The dish itself shocked me in the face in every possible way. One boneless breast + side part over few greens, mac & cheese. The meat was VERY DRY, TASTELESS. The batter was badly grainy, also dry and chemical-taste-seasoned. Mac & cheese was soooooo mushy that I thought it was a weird flour soup. The service was pretty dry too, no one asked me how the dish was, no one was paying attention to my empty glass of water, not even offering HOT SAUCE. For real? And guess what? $16 including tax. It just ruined my dinner so hard and I had to get some piece from Crown Fried Chicken place. Happy hour menu looks pretty good and I appreciate boneless part. However, I will never ever visit this place again. And I think they shouldn't say themselves Southern, or train chefs and kitchen staffs from the basic. This isn't just a cafe, it's a restaurant...a darn good one too! Through the years, I've watched Brooklyn Moon Cafe morph from a bar, into a joint for poetry slams to what it is now. I hope this is the final destination. I only spied the buffalo wings that my friend and her date ordered but I could tell from the picked clean bones, that they must have been good. My fried tilapia was crispy and nicely seasoned. I ordered it with some type of potato that was probably delicious but after my rum punch, who knows... The rum punch here is tasty and sweet-not at all strong tasting but it should come with a warning label. One minute, I was having an intelligent conversation with my friends. 5 minutes into my drink, I was talking too loud and banging on the table! I ate here last night with my Mom and had a really great experience. My mother and my little sister, unbeknowst to me, had been here several times but never told me about it, which I thought was very very mean! My Mother first suggested Night of the Cookers in which I almost erupted in complete rage because that place is just awful and I refuse to ever step foot in there again! It exemplifies everything I hate about restaurants frequented by people of color. But Brooklyn Moon Cafe is my refuge now. Since it was a Wednesday night, the place wasn't that heavily populated but as soon as I walked in, I knew that I would enjoy the views at least. There was a bevy of beautiful brownness scattered throughout the restaurant. The waittress, who is obviously included in the bevy, seated us in a lighted area because my Mom has trouble seeing the menu in those darkly overtly sexual lit areas that seem to be typical of restaurants these days. We prefer to see our food! I have to say that the waitress was so attentive to our needs that I was extremely surprised. Actually both waittresses were, and there was a beautiful deeply ebony goddess that works there who i couldn't help but to be flabbergasted when she stopped by to chat and fill our waters....I mean my GOOD WORD, nearly fainted into my empty plate! On to the food though, which is the most important of course...We went straight to main event and ordered entrees with two sides. My dear Mom had the fried fish with red beans and rice, corn, and a small salad. I believe that all the meat entrees come on a bed of mixed greens. The fried fish was done very lightly with, what tasted like a corn meal crust. I'm typically not a fan of fried fish as I find them extremely fishy tasting at Southern/Soul food restaurants but this was so light and good. I didn't taste the red beans and rice or corn as I had my own entree to deal with but my Mom devoured her meal! I had the spicy shrimp with collard greens and mac and cheese, I know fat boy style! Ha! The shrimp had been drizzled with a sticky sauce but was done to perfection, I thought...not tough or overly sauteed. It tasted very fresh and, honestly, I was in shock. The collard greens were amazing and I wish that they would've given more because they were also not overtly salted...I didn't eve use vinegar which I normally do on them. The mac n cheese was definitely to my likening, being a lactard, I prefer a nice lightish mac and cheese and this was perfect for me. Overall, I was literally scrapping the plate for more food before my Mom was half way done with hers...but she's a slow eater anyway...or whatever, don't judge me! I forwent the alcohol because I was with my Mom but I did have a Guava Lemonade which was good but a little too sugary for my taste and speaking of, if you're diabetic, I recommend watching out for that...water and lemon will do you just fine! Hmm.. how many things can make me not want to return to a place... and Brooklyn Moon actually did it. I happen to try out this location with a group of friends on Saturday, and what a mistake it was. Waiter service was all right, but usually one can not get full on just drinking water along, need to nosh after an entire afternoon of walking around the steaming hot Coney Island Boardwalk. There is good conversation, it was the wait for the food and then when the food came, that sets off my rage. It took an hour after placing our order, for the food to come, and it was burnt. I ordered a Salmon Burger, and it brings to my mind a horrible experience of a Veggie Burger that I had. I couldn't even taste if the salmon was salmon really. The only thing I enjoyed about my meal was Plantain,, and it is pretty difficult to mess this up. . Then I overheard that an acquaintance had to ask for four different dishes for the restaurant to finally have it. What kinda restaurant is it to not have the food that is on their menu. Pretty bad. My other friend had a soft shell crab, shrimp salad.. and that salad was so salty, that she was like how much sodium can one get in a meal. I know how much a restaurant would slap an obligatory grattitude tip for parties over 6, and with our party being 9 people. There was a $22 waiter fee... and I was pretty annoyed with the service, but we ended up paying. So that's that. Now while I love this place, and make my way there as much as I can, here's a few things I should warn you about. Don't go to Brooklyn Moon if you are STARVING or very HUNGRY, they're short staffed, and your server is also the bartender who made your drink. If you're lucky, you'll go on a night where they have 2 servers. But once your food arrives, all is forgiven. The Honey BBQ wings, are finger lick'n good, Crab Cakes are seasoned just right and the curry-potatoes one of their signature sides are excellent.
