I'm so happy we finally decided to stop in and try Broken Engrish! Admittedly, I don't eat at vegetarian restaurants often, but this place far exceeded expectations. The service (owner?) was very friendly and helpful, the ambiance was nice, and the food was delicious and flavorful. I would not hesitate to come back here at any time. To eat, we tried the "beef" noodle soup, mapo tofu waffle fries, and tomato & scrambled eggs. The "beef" noodle soup was definitely my favorite. Go ahead and give this place a try! It will not disappoint.

Dont know what took us so long to stop in but we are so glad we did today! The food is so delicious. We couldnt get over the dan dan noodles and the sauce. The mapo tofu waffle fries are so good and such a fun take. The "pork" on rice is clearly popular for a reason. Could eat it every day. Super excited to come back and try more food and get more dan dan! Didnt have a chance to try the shakes but excited to. The owner is super nice and made the experience super chill. 10/10 Will definitely be back. The photo is midway through our meal, we couldnt wait to dig in! Still cant believe everything is vegetarian/vegan!

This place is way better than I expected. The place is simple. You ring the bell to place an order and pay as you place the order. The taste is clean, fresh and authentic. It is hard to find water spinach on the menu. And they have it. So i was super excited about that. Eating here is like home cooked Taiwanese food. It was the type of food you would eat at home if you family can cook well. I will definitely be back again.

Broken Engrish is a bit of a hidden gem just outside of Hollywood proper, but if you want to get some interesting vegetarian/vegan Taiwanese cuisine, this is worth exploring. The best dish is the Stewed Jackfruit "Beef" Noodle Soup. It is a hearty noodle soup that can easily fool any meat eater when it comes to the savory broth with the traditional Taiwanese 5-spice stew. The jackfruit may not be beef, but it is just as savory and has surprisingly good texture. The noodle is nice and chewy, as well. The 2nd best dish is the Braised Minced "Pork" on Rice. The "pork" is Beyond Meat made with avocado oil and served with rice, house-pickled daikon that is a must to balance the flavor, tea-marinated egg (tofu substitute available), and green onions. The daikon really is the key to add interest to the flavor which is delicious but a bit one-note without the daikon. Still though, it is yummy, just ask for extra daikon. The skirt potstickers are delicious and also taste like your normal potstickers, so you can't go wrong with them. No notes. The Bok-Choy is pretty good, but not really my choice of vegetables in general. Everyone else still enjoyed it though. Lastly, I only wish I saw the Chili Oil early on. I bet it would make all these dishes taste even better! It is essential for enjoying Taiwanese cuisine in my opinion!

Do not let the cute name fool you, the food here is seriously good. We ordered the DanDan Noodle, Mince Pork n rice, and omlette. The peanut flavor of the DanDan Noodle was perfect. You could not tell that the minced pork was vegan. The onletteeas also abdolutely delish...very close to a true egg omlette in both flavor and texture. Gerry, the owner, is so cool and nice. He told us that he also makes has a Peanut Butter milkshake on the menu which we overlooked. Other flavors also available. We will definately be coming back.. and I will absolutely be ordering that shake.

Really cool spot. Vegetarian Taiwanese food: very unique in my opinion. I've not seen this in the restaurant scene before! Maple banana shake: so good!!! Thick and creamy but not too thick. Still drinkable. Sweet but not too sweet. Amazing. 5/5 Garlic mushroom rice: very tasty and flavorful. Generous portion. Good for sharing. Bouncy mushrooms and sticky rice. Just a little bit too oily. 4/5 Marinated hard boiled egg: I was expecting a flavor similar to tea eggs but this tasted like it had been marinated in just soy sauce. So a very one dimensional overly salty egg. 2/5 Plenty of seating and intentional ambience.

Checks all boxes! Cute space, comfy and friendly. Interesting menu. I was craving dan dan noodles and this place did not disappoint. Will come back to try something else.

After 8 o'clock it's free to park, but the restaurant usually closes at eight so if you come a little bit before.

Broken Engrish. Very tasty food. I wish the portions were bigger but now nowadays, it seems to be the norm. Definitely not cheap but the noodles were really chewy and they had a nice consistency. There was some peanut sauce inside of it, which made it rich. I would definitely add some kind of acid to lighten the richness of the sauce. Add the spicy chili oil for it gives it a nice kick and added flavor. The cucumber salad is nice and refreshing. I would say that if I were to eat the bowl of noodles alone, I would not have been full. Parking is out in the street. After 8 o'clock It's free but the restaurant closes early. It's definitely a small place. Jerry the chef is passionate about sharing vegan food to the world the food that he cooks is the food that he likes to eat. It really is a one-man show there. He cooks, cleans, cooks again, and waits table. It's amazing that he does it all by himself. Overall, very tasty food if it weren't so far away I would consider returning.

Service was quick and amazing. Food was authentic, amazing, and high quality. To add onto it, everything is vegetarian!! Awesome to see!! The ambiance is cozy and welcoming. Coming from a Taiwanese person who grew up on the food, this is truly amazing stuff. I highly recommend if you are craving Asian food or visiting the LA area. Hidden gem for sure.

Before the food... the restaurant name is FIRE and their name in chinese is EVEN MORE FIRE. So they serve vegetarian taiwanese food right Their chinese name is 菜英文 The 菜 means vegetable in chinese, so it's a vegetarian restaurant. But 菜 also means "bad" in slang, and 英文 means english, so 菜英文 means broken engrish. Finally, 菜英文 and 蔡英文 are pronounced the same, with the latter being the name of the former taiwanese president, hence it being taiwanese food TRIPLE ENTENDRE SO FIRE Anyways the food was alright lol Their ru rou fan was actually pretty good, good quality of flavor and tasted like real meat. Probably better than some restaurants that serve the dish with real pork. Their beef noodle soup unfortunately did not do the same, I think it's just really hard to recreate such a beef centered dish without using real beef. The vibe is very silly too, feels like a dive bar and the owner is just some dude who's there and talks to you.

don't know why yelp is reporting closed i literally went there tonight my only regret is not coming here sooner: - peanut dan dan noodles: 10/10 delicious peanut flavor with a bit of heat and sparklingly fresh vegetables - minced pork on rice: 10/10 strong earthy umami flavoring balances perfectly with the fluffy rice and sharp pickled daikon - fried potstickers: 10/10 literally 20 vegetables inside, seasoned to perfection with a crunchy border and rich tangy sauce chef is a lovely person and if you don't mind that there's no table service, it's a lovely place to sit and eat as well can't wait to come back and try literally everything

Dan Dan Noodles, braised minced "pork", shishito peppers, slow cooked peanuts, smashed cucumber, marinated seaweed, extra sauces. :)

Taste: 5 Value: 5…read moreService: 5 One of the best Taiwanese meals I've had since coming back from Taipei at the start of the year. The hot and sour soup was thick and chunky, just how I like the soup. The scallion bread sandwich with 5-spice beef was distinct. The bread was perfectly baked and the beef was flavorful and juicy. There was both mustard greens and pickles that gave crunch and acidity to balance the meat and bread. The lotus root salad was refreshing while still having a kick from their in-house chili oil. Dan Dan noodles were also excellent. Fresh cucumbers, chewy noodles, flavorful sauce. Hearty portions with enough for a lunch the next day. Also appreciated the speed of service. Lines move quickly and food comes out quickly. Looking forward to my next visit!

I really liked…read moretheir interior decoration, it gave felt both modern Chinese and nostalgic at the same time. They also had really authentic and delicious looking cold appetizers like woodear mushrooms and lotus root salad. There was barely a line when we arrived and we were able to order and get a table without much wait. The food all came out at the same time and very quickly. We got their shrimp wontons, Chia Yi chicken rice, and sesame scallion bread stuffed with braised pork belly. I was ready to be transported back to Asia when I saw the dishes but tasting them left me wanting more. The shrimp wontons had very thin silky wrapper which was very tasty, but the shrimp itself was so bland and lacked texture. Most of the shrimp wontons I've loved had a nice bite to it from the baking soda soak but this was just soft dumpling skin on soft shrimp. The shrimp itself could've used more salt and white pepper too, but I suppose dousing it in chili oil helped. The scallion bread filled with pork belly is probably the tastiest dish. The pork belly was well cooked and paired well with the sweet sauce, crunchy peanuts and fresh herbs. The sesame scallion bread however tasted like it has been sitting out on the counter for hours waiting to be stuffed. The bread was cold and the exterior wasn't crispy, there were scallion pieces throughout but you couldn't really taste it. I would recommend trying other dishes before trying the chia yi chicken rice. The shredded chicken was dry and bland, mixed in with mostly soggy pieces of fried shallots. The rice was more flavourful because it was soaked in fragrant oils, but it also left it very mushy and almost congee like. The pickled radishes didn't add much to the dish either. I almost forgot but we also tried their honey lemon black tea and passion fruit black tea. Neither tea had a lot of tea flavor, it was mostly just sweet. The passion fruit syrup was pretty tasty but we both wished there was more black tea. I might be extra critical since I grew up with this type of food, but there are other restaurants in LA that delivers great quality Chinese food. TL;DR: Joy is a well decorated restaurant with good vibes that prioritizes speed of service over freshness and flavour of food.

The way it's set up is pretty cultural. It reminds me of some hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant the way they have metal utensils at each table. It's almost like a self-serve system to certain tools which is pretty common. I haven't drank water out of metal cup in a long time, so that was nostalgic too. We tried a variety of dishes to get a fuller understanding of their menu of what this place has to offer. I was really looking forward to the beef roll because it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one was disappointing. I define a good beef roll as one that's a good mix of sweet, savory and refreshing. The meat makes it savory and the veggies are supposed to counter it make the whole dish feel light. If someone disagrees with me, please share your thoughts on what a beef roll should taste like. The one from Pine & Crane was drenched in sauce. I could not taste the meat or the veggies and the whole thing tasted like a stick of sugar. The mapo tofu was on point, but this is quality you can probably make at home. The flavor profile was very similar to that of stuff you'd get a grocery store. The three cup jidori chicken came recommended, so we tried it. The flavor is very pungent and goes well with rice. It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

Anything you can eat you any night you don't have to cook is usually a great night out. This evening was no exception. Our waitress was kind and accommodating. Positive energy, drinks filled and smile that felt genuine. The ambiance of the restaurant was bar like, but with adequate seating for dining in. Everything was prepared wonderfully and had tremendous flavor. I recommend trying their Hui Tou, stuffed with pork or beef, pork and leek pancakes, they also have vegetarian options. Their pork shumai was delicious, xiao long bao's soup dumplings were flavorful. Delicious. I definitely need a second trip here to try their soups and more of their variety of dumplings.
