We visited Broken Earth again during our visit to Paso Robles in May, again we found that their wines were absolutely great. Brian (their marketing guy) poured for us, we had a great conversation with him about Broken Earth, how he came to this winery, and of course the different wines we tasted. We usually bring our own cheese and crackers and of course chocolate. Sometimes we will try some of their pairings, which has been good. One thing that stands out with Broken Earth is their Thirsty Thursday deals! We usually order something once a month or so with their great deals (you have be a member of their wine club to get the deal). Came here with a Bachelorette Party group which included a bunch of wonderful ladies. We arrived a little early for our appointment and were greeted very rudely by a devil woman in gold pants. (She made a bad choice on that purchase.) They put us in the cafeteria area where it smelled like old food, and there was a soft-spoken woman playing music, so we were asked to keep our voices down. The dude that worked there was lovely and accommodating, but the other workers were angry and should probably work from home. Alone. Our experience here was unpleasant and the worst part of our fun-filled winery tour day. Their outdoor seating area is nice with plenty of shade, but some seats are only accessible via grass which was difficult for a family member. There was a handicap accessible table but it was occupied by a party bus group and the winery did nothing to accommodate said family member. We ended up sitting on a bench in front of the winery (we had to be outside because we had a dog with us). Once inside, the staff took a long time to acknowledge me and when she did, she didn't explain the wine at all. She was more attentive to my husband, though, so he ended up getting the tastings for me. Let me begin by saying Sir Richard (my nickname for Richard) was the best. You see, Tuesday, I decided to drive the four hours to the winery to pick up my wine because I was bored sitting at home and I enjoy the wonderful view that that hwy 46 brings. Once arriving, I was greeted by the smooth vocals of a very mellow Sir Richard as he welcomed me to try an array of wines that would satisfy both novice and experts. Initially, I was hesitant about receiving the wine because I was a novice and had no idea what I was drinking (hint: I was chewing gum and Miles from Sideways would have gawked at me). I informed Sir Richard of this and it was like watching a kid opening a Christmas gift because he eagerly welcomed the chance to educate me. For each wine he offered, he took me through the history of the wine and even suggested how I should pair it with certain foods. He was not snobbish, arrogant, or even frustrated with me but he took pleasure in educating me and that's why I write this review. He made time to teach me while addressing the needs of the other patrons. All I can say is I left feeling like I had made the team and I could proudly walk into any winery and not look like a novice. Woo hoo Broken Earth Winery is amazing. If you are driving down from Norcal or you want to go for a wine tour in Central California, then please stop by Broken Earth. They are a young winery, and I believe everyone should support them. First off, Richard the wine pourer was so friendly and helpful. He was very generous with his pours and quick as a whip with his wit and humor. Secondly, they provide seven complimentary wine tastings. We ended up buying a case of wines and then some; it was that good. We then took a bottle of wine and some paninis outside in the gardens. Came to the location excited about going to EOS winery...showed up to find that EOS had been gone for over a year and Broken Earth had taken over. Decided to try it out. OMG sooo glad we did! I love my big, earthy reds but this place has THE best whites I've had! And for a good price point. The whites are unique to the region and all delicious! There are many wineries in Paso and I was excite to try this place. I heard that they had a wine and cheese pairing. First of all, a lot of the wineries are free wine tasting, here they charged $5 a tasting....$5!! I mean in napa you can pay 10 bucks and have a tasting of 5 glasses! They then positioned it that you get a tasting waived for every bottle you buy. I did however really enjoyed their moscato. That was my favorite. Everything was so so. I ended up buying their most expensive cab reserve and it wasn't exactly worth how much I paid. The guy wasn't extremely friendly, not sure if it was because we were young but we wasn't super friendly. I mentioned the cheese and he said nothing about it. So no cheese. Sad. read more

Not sure if 4 or 5 stars is closer to the truth, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. Nice grounds, knowledgable staff and truly quality wines, not bad for only being in business for less than 5 years. Started out next to a group of less than experienced wine tasters that the guy was very patient with. Soon the proprietor came out and was serving me exclusively since there was a lull in the crowd. He gave me some tips on how to get the most of what I was experiencing and also basically threw in a free bottle at the end. If it was the last stop, I would have definitely tried the adjacent cafe, too. A well rounded collection of wines, reds stand out but everyone will find something they enjoy. read more

Wow. I don't know what to think of this place. I visited about a year ago and they were practically giving away the wine and I bought a Panini and it was the size of a hockey puck. It was hard like a hockey puck too. The staff were bored and the girl who made our Panini (well, heated it up after taking it out of the bottom of the refrigerator and unwrapping the tin foil) was sitting on the counter playing with her phone the whole time. The place was really dirty too with cobwebs and dead flies in the windows. It was a never again kind of place. Last summer my friends wanted to go there because they heard the Paninis were good and I rolled along (thinking noooo way). But then the Paninis were amazing and served with a beautiful salad and they served us outside. We met a really nice older gentleman who cleared our table and chatted with us for a while. And the manager came out and was really friendly (I think her name is Vicky) and brought us water.The wines aren't anything interesting, especially with so many amazing other wineries so close. A lot of them taste the same. One guy told us that one of the wines was on sale because it was going bad. What? I just thought "oh well, it was a nice afternoon with my friends and it was cheap." Then, I was back through that area with the same friends who wanted a cheap afternoon out and it was awful again. We saw the older gentleman again and he said the manager had quit - and it shows. The food quality has dropped, the service is lame, except we did really like Trudy. She was fun. If you want quality wines, food, or service, this is not the place to go. I'd say it has cheap drinkable wines but I saw their wine at Costco for a lot cheaper than they sell it in the tasting room. Oh. And they sell coffee - espressos and all. ??? My best friend and I made Broken Earth our first stop of the day April 12th and we almost wish we hadn't! The wine pairings with the cheese and chocolate was superb. The wines poured had an excellent variety and the flavor was wonderful. None of the other wineries we went to that day compared for us. Trudy was hilarious and knowledgeable, and the other staff were also funny and professional. We ended up coming back at the end of our day to buy more wine from them. Sign up for their wine club- the wines are that good and the discount is excellent. Highly recommend this place, you won't regret it! Additionally, if you have the time, eat at their cafe. I arrived at Broken Earth excited to try their wines and especially the pizza! However, I arrived at 5:15pm and the wine concierge said that we were too late to order any food and that we would have to rush our tasting if we even wanted one. Now on their website and the tasting room does not close until 6pm and advertises having food until 6pm...just to let you know. We did not appreciate the "rush" we received from the staff and although we did not try their wines, solely because we were told a tasting takes longer than 40 minutes, we did not stay and decided to go down the street and enjoy wonderful pizza and wine at San Antonio Winery which was a great experience and was able to accommodate us arriving past 5pm when the location closed at 6pm. I hated the fact that Broken Earth was not loyal to their closing time. If you go there, just keep in mind that according to the staff... they actually close at 5pm! read more

The property here is very nice. However, my main complaint it the tasting room service. For the majority of our tasting we were bombarded with the details of the wine club. I'm sure tasting room personnel makes commission off of members, but I can assure they wouldn't get that commission from me. They just wouldn't let it go.... Additionally, the tasting room manager lied to us. Without asking, he told us of how grand their vineyard was and how they owned all of the vineyard around them. I will not mention the winery who told us, but literally just before we came in we were told of how Broken Earth vineyard was located elsewhere and that a different organization owned the grapes around the winery. The pourer also was very pushy about the wines. My wife and I were interested in a taste, but we ended up being poured several wines that we didn't ask for. Fortunately, we had the foresight to split a glass. It was as if he only wanted us to taste their wines, and not be able to taste anywhere else. As far the wines, they were crafted pretty well. The majority reached about average for the Paso region. I asked for the Syrah Viogner blend, but was poured the Pint Noir instead. My husband, daughter, son-in-law and I visited Broken Earth Winery for the first time last week. What a great experience! After doing a little research, I thought that it would be fun to go to Broken Earth, obviously to taste their wines, but also because they have a small café on site with some tasty sounding menu items. When we arrived at the Winery, the tasting room staff was super friendly and welcoming. We decided to order lunch first since we were told it would take about 15 minutes to prepare. While waiting, we began wine tasting. There is a $10 fee per 7-wine flight, but the fee is waived with wine bottle purchase. Our tasting hostess was Anna ... what a delightful lady! She was very knowledgeable about the wines, and she gave us some fun facts about the Wine Maker and his background. We really enjoyed talking with her. At one point our food was ready, so we were invited to sit at one of the high tables and chairs in the tasting room, or at a table on the patio just outside the tasting room. The café hostess was delightful and served us our food right there at our table in the tasting room. The food was very tasty and we all thought reasonably priced too. Anna was kind enough to come over to our table to bring us our additional tastings while we dined on lunch. This was on a Thursday afternoon, so if it had been a busy weekend, we would not expect that they would be able to leave the tasting bar in order to serve us at a table. Visiting Broken Earth was a very fun and unique experience. Kind of like being invited into someone's home and being very well taken care of. We would all love to come back to visit again during another stay in Paso Robles! read more

Great place!! I have to be honest, I was skeptical at first because we found this place through a Groupon and my boyfriend really wanted to use the Groupon so we did. But the experience was great! We went during the week so we basically were the only ones there. We got two tastings and a cheese plate and the price for all of that was such a good deal! Even without the Groupon it's so cheap! Like $10 for a tasting! The guy who helped us was super down to earth and very talkative. Also gave us suggestions for places to eat around the area. Now... the cheese plate ! Yum yum yum!! It was not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be this simple plate but wow did it have a great variety ! I really wish we did the chocolate plates too but I guess I can't only do so much at a time right ?!? My favorite wine was the Rose. Not what you would expect for a Rose and not as Sweet. Have gone to Broken Earth twice for wine tasting, and once for a wedding. I am far from a wine expert--I just know what I like when I taste it. I enjoyed the PULL Merlot and PULL Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot. If you are a fan of dessert wines, I highly recommend you take home a bottle or two of Ragpicker's Dream port. The Moscato is also very refreshing. Easy access to Hwy 46, lots of parking! The grounds are on a very slight incline, but really were a minimal challenge to me with my physical limitations due to back and knee problems. You will enjoy the comfortable, cozy tasting room with friendly, knowledgeable staff, and find eclectic shopping which included food, jewelry and apparel items. Broken Earth Winery is a very nice venue for a wedding because of the ample, level parking and well-groomed grounds. A wheelchair-bound person or one using a wheeled walker would do just fine if he or she chose to attend an event here. The grounds are very photogenic, and the barrel room offers lots of flexibility for set-up of any event. The wedding I attended used half of the barrel room, accommodating 120 people comfortably with plenty of room, but not so huge that you felt lost and out-of-touch with other attendees. Relative to several other wineries nearby, the rental fee for this facility is very reasonable. read more

Don't let the location fool you! They are near the firestone brewery (recently moved) and we had the BEST time! This was our second stop of the day and I have to say Jennifer blew it out of the park!! She was super friendly, and attentive but not overly so and answered any questions we had. We enjoyed the wines and walked away with 2 bottles ( 1 bottle purchase comps one $15 tasting) and a full belly! The pizzas were awesome, crunchy crusts with just a little chew. Simple but the best I've had in a while. I'd totally recommend making Broken Earth a lunch/tasting spot on your next winery tour. read more

I had received a bottle of their 10 yr cab reserve. It was fantastic. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon as we were in the area so it was not terribly busy. Flight of their estate cab, petite syrah, tempranillo, merlot, and CV cab. CV was fantastic but a bit overpriced. Others were really good. Looks like their estate bottles are screw caps. Read an interesting article in wine enthusiasts outlining the pros to screw cap vs corks and preservation of wine...so this didn't turn me off (a few french wines I recently purchased were also screw cap). Server was extremely knowledgeable, no one tried to sell us on their wine club. I will say I was not offered any crackers but two other wineries I stopped by didn't either. I will stop again next time I'm in the area. read more

Had a ton of fun today at Broken Earth. Impromptu wine tasting after brunch (Hunter Ranch). The wine and staff was FABULOUS! Avalon was a great wine hostess and made the tasting a blast.
