A Modesto classic. A friend of mine brought me here when we were in high school. I loved it then, & I still love it now. Healthy & fresh. Avocado & sprouts for days. And starting at $4.70? Geez. Since I've been living in San Francisco for the last 20 plus years, where the sandwich average is $8 to $12 bucks, this feels practically free. The converted gas station. It's pretty cool. The sunlight coming in through the 2 walls of windows is fantastic when it's sunny out. And there's a wood burning stove for the chilly days. This being Modesto, you can take full advantage of the patio about 9 months out of the year. They do great soups & salads, too. The Soup, of course, is made from scratch. From the outside it looks like a falling down wooden building- but once inside it's a feast for the eyes and tummy. Our food was served fast and had the softest fresh bread and our sandwiches were filled with high end ingredients. The Franklin stove was on and it was so warm and comfy while we enjoyed our meal. They even have a resident kitty that will pop in to visit guests and take a nap on a chair near the heater. Under $20 for two lunches that tasted amazing in an interesting building- not a bad deal. Will definitely be returning. ** the single downfall of this place is that on first visit, it was a little challenging to figure out how it all works there. The entrance isn't very clearly marked. Once you walk in there are tables but no posted menu (they are printed and located near the front door). ONLY location so if you're anywhere near a member of the 21st C, be sure to hit up your bank's ATM before you come or you can visit the BotW or WF across the street. Like many of the other reviewers said, it's confusing to know what to do on your first visit. The door you use to order your food at not the main entrance, but a door to the far left. Once inside, you put your order on a 3x5 card (if you're staying) or a white paper bag (if you're going). The ladies who made the sandwiches were really nice and the sandwiches were produced on the main side of the building quickly. The owner was super sweet and insisted that we eat first before trucking across the street for cash (even brought us a fresh fruit bowl on the house for our trouble), but I felt a little foolish and my bf went to the ATM for us. He ordered the Jason (chicken salad sandwich) and I had the Amy (Turkey and Salami on French roll). After all the reviews I read, I was expecting an epic sandwich experience, but alas, as one reviewer wrote, they weren't anything I couldn't make at home. My sandwich was dry with very little mayo and my bf's chicken salad was flavorless. I was impressed by the under $20 price for 2 sandwiches, 2 chips, and one soda (but perhaps we got what we paid for?). Worst part is I didn't see the kitty cat! Best tuna salad sandwich I've tasted so far, and I doubt I'll taste anything better than the Charlie. The Charlie is perfectly balanced sandwich of albacore tuna, shredded lettuce, tomato and cheese.
