I am shy to admit but as of late I have been eating a lot of steak and one of the best deals in town is the steak and garlic fries at Brasil. Aside from their large selection of coffees, cocktails, and wine, they have an amazing kitchen that can basically whip anything you expect from a cafe. The steak frites in the evening is quite possibly my favorite with their avocado crema and the garlic french fries. Their chimichurri is a spectacular addition atop the steak and they will actually cook it to the temperature that you request it. I have had it well done, medium, and rare and I have not been disappointed with anything other than myself for asking it to be done well. I have to say that Brasil has really stepped up it's game. The front patio is a nice setting on a nice night, and they usually have a live DJ playing, check their Instagram for the schedule. We went on a Wednesday evening and the music and vibes were great. The parking situation was difficult, making it not the most ideal place to grab some bites, but I would come back for the empanadas, drinks (Matcha Martini), and music. I've been coming here for over 25 years and I have to say, I'm rather taken aback by the three star rating. This place is an absolute gem no matter what the occasion, whether you're getting some computer work done or meeting with friends or going on a date, Brasil has the perfect ambience and menu item for you. There are two indoor dining areas - one a little more casual and one a little more intimate, and two patios - one a little more intimate yet lively (side patio), and one a little more quiet and relaxed (back patio). The food and drinks are also always delicious. Yes, it's a little bit pricier than a normal cafe, but what would you expect with its prime location, and therefore prime rent, and high-quality delicious food and drinks? I saw some people noting small portions, however, I've never left without a to-go box when ordering a main dish. Anyway, I can't recommend Brasil enough and anyone who's lived in or frequented the Montrose area for years knows Brasil is a wonderful restaurant and cafe. read more

Usually I'd opt for Agora, Empire or Common Bond, but after scanning a few reviews, I decided Brasil looked like a good low key spot to catch up with a friend. I will say, the service was great. My friend and I tend to talk for hours & the team cleared our plate when appropriate, but gave us space. But ... here's the tea: I must have tried the wrong items because the food just wasn't impressive. The chicken verde pizza was too rich in fat and somehow still lacked flavor, the salad was...a salad. The cortados were cortados. All edible but underwhelming. Tried Brasil today and overall we were okay with our order. We both got a burger, but I order mine well done. It came out more medium well. I would say it was an okay burger but not something I would come back to try. My boyfriend was satisfied with his burger and beer and I had a margarita with my burger, which was good. Came here for after night shift breakfast. This place has been on our list for a while. It kind of gives off this cool hidden vibe. My wife and I shared the French toast, she had the migas and I got the morning bowl. The French toast and the migas were both good, but I really loved the breakfast bowl. This place is not only a staple in Montrose but also a staple in my heart. I've always loved the food and coffee. They make such a good matcha! The service i great. Sometimes a good place to do work during the week during the day but almost every time at anytime I am passive aggressively told by the owner that I can't be doing my work or ushers me to order more in order to stay. Which I understand if it's a busy restaurant or busy day and seating needs to be available but I have yet to see it bustling like that when I'm there during the week. Bras-il is perhaps a bras-erie if you like. This is the kind of place which brunch people and prototypical hipster Yelpers will go to. They will rave about it, write great reviews of it, and they will keep coming back for more, while all of the real food all over Houston (in fact some of the best you'll ever find anywhere in North America) just sits there with a dusty Yelp page covered in tumbleweeds with barely a review. That's fair enough. I don't love it but that's what I'm used to. But yeah. Overrated for me. If you're into this kind of thing then go for it. My problem is that even as far as brunch spots go which I don't like in general, there are much better ones and considerably cheaper ones too. The reason I give three stars is for their excellent service, and because they're locally-owned, but I wouldn't eat here again - not even if it was a quarter of the price like it probably should be. read more

This place is fine. Management is rude and the food is pretty mid. They also promote bad customer service and food waste. You order at the counter and they bring food to your table with a number. They brought my friend a plate of tamales and she assumed they thought she meant one order of tamales instead of one single tamale when ordering so she accepted the tamales and ate some instead of being difficult. They brought the rest of her food that then included the one individual tamale. She did the right thing and told management that she must've mistakenly been given the wrong tamales (to make sure that whoever ordered them received them) and then she told them she would eat the tamales since they were going to have to throw them away from THEIR mistake. The manager leaves the tamales there for her to eat and then comes back a minute later and says the chef is furious and she can't have the tamales because she didn't pay for them. She asked if they were going to throw them away and they said yes. So instead of letting her have the tamales after they screwed up they decided it was better to throw perfectly good food away that someone could have eaten. Clearly they do not care about customer service whatsoever because if you're going to throw them away anyways why not leave someone a happy customer? Instead they pissed off someone that is very influential on the Houston food scene so best of luck to them. TLDR; management sucks but the coffee is good. probably never returning. read more

I came for lunch, but arrived early enough to order breakfast (before 12). I ordered the tamale breakfast with two eggs, tamale of your choice, and refried black beans. I selected the pork tamale, and while I enjoyed the flavor it was hard on the edges like it has been microwaved. I couldn't even cut the ends with a knife. I asked for eggs over medium, and one was served fried. The side of refried black beans comes in a 2 oz ramekin. The service started off well. The woman at the counter was great, as was the person who brought us our food. A tall man with white hair came to our table around 12:40 to take our plates, to rudely inform us that it was lunch, and get us to leave. The restaurant wasn't even half full of customers. I have been coming to Brasil for close to 15 years. It is easily one of my favorite spots in this area. I am a frequent patron of Agora across the street, but when I need something more than just a croissant, I come here to Brasil. My personal favorite is the pork tamale. I special order their spicy green jalapeno sauce which gives it the kick I am looking for during my lunch hour. Paired with a tempranillo, it is the perfect liquid lunch combo. I see a lot of other reviewers complaining about the service. I'll confess, I never had similar experiences. I've never had issues with getting good service and with staff being rude. I am not saying it doesn't happen, but I've been coming here for years and never noticed this. However, I do not tend to linger here much anymore since I have to get back to work so I am not sure about the whole "rushing to clear the table" others complained about. In general, I found the staff responsive to my idiosyncratic requests with politeness and helpfulness. I can see why this is a great place to work and study. The place just feels like the kind of restaurant you can go to study and work at. I have in the past while I was in school. However, there are many other great options in the area for this as well, like Agora, which is my personal favorite but honestly gets too crowded at times. I knew about the issue with the owner here based on reading Yelp reviews but had never experienced it first-hand before until today. My bf and I went Sunday afternoon and the place was maybe half-packed with many empty tables. We each got our iced tea and was working on our laptop at a table when this older guy who turned out to be the owner of the place approached us and asked us if were were ordering any food. Mind you, we hadn't even been there for 30 minutes. We told him we probably will and he said we should order something off their brunch menu. We kindly told him we'd already had brunch but probably will order some other food. He sarcastically told us off for ordering brunch at some other place and then coming to his place afterwards. He then reluctantly went away and we ordered a quiche just to placate him. I was thinking of staying there as long as possible to spite him but decided to leave since our experience was ruined anywhere. The large outdoor space in the back is great. They have lights strung and I could envision it being great for a private birthday, engagement party, or something of the sorts. My coworkers and I came with the intention of doing some work while drinking nice warm tea and coffee. While the front certainly looks like a coffee shop (i.e. barista appearing employees, big coffee machines), it is not really coffee shop friendly. What I mean by that is that the owner doesn't really want you staying more than an hour and this is made abundantly clear because your wifi code will only last for 1 hour. I didn't know this ahead of time so when I went back to the front to get another wifi code once mine expired, I was told that it's "1 hour per purchase"....so I guess if you buy one thing per hour they may be nicer about it, but I really don't recommend this place to do work. I am tempted to stand in solidarity with the medical community of Houston, but I had a good experience so I will grade accordingly- however if on return any issues will be cause for an updated rating. Upon admission, I was surprised to enter such a quaint but vast environment. Clean - traditional - stale. You are met by a bartender who seems to be running the show. He takes your order, pours your drink, brings out your food - sort of like a one man band. One would think this would be a set-up for failure - I almost expected him to be snarky or short - but he delivered and was just nothing short of courteous. Food: *Veggie Burger 4/5 - I mean, y'all know what it's like when my eyes roll back and I'm in Heaven. This wasn't it. But... every day can't be heaven. Let's be real. The burger was solid. Great taste profile, texture. Very rounded if that means anything. *Corn chowder 3.5/5 - I'm indecisive obviously. I just can't do a 3 or a 4. The soup did not change my life, but let me tell you something... I damn near licked that bowl. Anything you are willing to subject your character to questioning for deserves a little more than 3 stars, but I probably would experiment with another dish on return. Drinks: Tempranillo from a tap - huh? I'm a wine snob... I asked for Tempranillo and he walked away, I thought to bring me a list but he pulled a lever and voila! Um... Now I didn't stay for longer than lunch, and the waiter encouraged me to stay for happy our. I remember Brasil from a long time ago. That's the Brasil I love. This Brasil (of now) is pretentious, cheap (with the portions, not in price), and uninviting. Food: it's ... okay. Like, not great. Not terrible. Last time I was there I order the hummus platter, which FYI comes with "pita, hummus, and veggies. What I got was toast (apparently they were out of pita but failed to mention it at the register), a single tablespoon of hummus, and shaved carrots and a tomato what cut into corners. Not worth it. The rest of the meal was bland (tamales, black bean burger, and a few salads). Atmosphere: the owner walks around and makes sure that as long as you're there, you're ordering. He gives you a look when you don't have food coming your way or currently on your table. Forget the days of hanging out with coffee and your computer, owner man isn't having it any more. Feels very uninviting and cold. The staff: still friendly. Maybe they care about your experience, maybe not ... but it comes across as genuine. Though - no heads up on the toast (it was gross and I'm still not over it). Save your money. Go elsewhere for delicious portions. read more

I must say while I chuckle that the reviews that are complaining about spending $3 on a coffee to tie up a table for 3+ hours on Brazil's WiFi is silly. Try taking an intro business class y'all The food is great & the menu is developing it seems. Complaints I read from the past are simply not the case now. The Chef buys from organic markets & makes special limited edition meals for the weekends usually & it's slowly about to make me a regular!!! The food is all delicious & as a note I'm 100% vegan. Lastly, I'll say I'm going tomorrow morning for their extended brunch (follow them on IG!) & I may bring my work lap top since I'm dining alone & want to do some work over breakfast. I wrote this review simply to shout out to Ari, she was nothing but helpful as I struggled with my wheelchair to get to the patio. Ari even helped while they were buzzing tables to help me fix my broken hat.
