Yes there are plenty of pizza options in Houston but Luigi's is a lesser known spot that most folks only find out about because they want food while chilling at connecting Axelrad. They serve pizzas by the slice, which is a nice option not all pizza places offer! Most of the times I've had Luigi's was in fact at Axelrad's and the pizza always comes out timely and fresh. While Axelrad does not allow pizza boxes, Luigi's will serve your pizza on a hot plate if you'll be enjoying it at Axelrad. Our most recent visit was late-night following an event and Luigi's was the only pizza joint still open. We ordered a 16" pizza, half Supreme and half The Meats (meat lover's). Both sides were delicious - the Supreme was loaded to where the slices were floppy and The Meats lived up to its name. I like how they include hamburger (ground) beef on The Meats to make it a 4-meat pizza in addition to pepperoni, sausage, and Canadian bacon. Crust is on the thinner side and has a good chew texture to it. Adrian behind the counter helped us on our last visit - he was friendly and quick to bring out the pizza. After placing the order via phone, he quoted us 20 minutes, and the pizza was indeed ready within that timeframe. There is not much atmosphere here, as it's more of a grab-and-go type of place. They do serve gelato but on my last visit, the gelato machine was broken but they had a note stating that they still have gelato in the back freezer. They have very limited seating inside and some covered outdoor seating at the restaurant itself. Right next door is an open space where people hang out. There are chairs and hammocks. Next door there is a full service bar. Luigi's does not serve alcohol, but you can walk over and grab a cocktail to go with your meal. I've been to Luigi's a couple of times and it's always good! Being attached to Axelrad means they're always busy, which can make the ordering area a little tight, but the line moves quickly. Staff is friendly and slices are huge - two signs of a great pizza spot! Their buzzer system works well, so you can crab a seat on their patio or head next door to grab a drink while you wait. This last visit I feel like I wanted my slice a little cheesier? Something about it felt drier than usual if that makes sense. My wife just added Luigi's to our list of favorite local pizza restaurants. She likes thin crust on her pizza. I don't care about the thickness of the crust... I like FLAVOR and TEXTURE. The meats were plentiful enough that I did not have to measure my bites and the sauce was seasoned well enough that all I cared to add was a sprinkling of crushed red pepper. ...speaking of crushed red pepper, do you remember when all the pizza restaurants offered crushed red pepper and grated parmesan cheese with their entrees? (But I regress) Luigi's dining area is a covered patio enclosed on three sides with plexiglass siding. The third side opens into a courtyard that is shared with Axelrad Beer Garden. The patio area is cooled by a mini split A/C unit and ceiling fans. It was comfortable on the day of our visit. Strong enough to hold all the toppings, sauce, and cheese without making a mess. Large, triangular pre-cut slices. Very similar to New York style pizza but maybe less messy. The toppings have a Texas twist of course. Smoked Brisket is not a common California pizza topping, and it was awesome. Like BBQ on a slice! The Supreme was also good but I'd rather have brisket!
