3.5 stars, edging up to 4. I just came through the walk-up window and grabbed a slice, so this review is for a single slice at the window. They had a pretty good selection of by-the-slice pizzas that day. It came out in about five minutes -- this is your classic style where the pizza's already made, and once you order they throw your slice in the oven to heat it up, drop it on a paper plate, and hand it to you at the window. All-beef pepperoni slice, ~$5.50 -- a pretty good slice. The crust was very thin and got very crispy after cooking. On value, though, $5.50 for a single slice is a little much -- I think somewhere in the $3.50-$4 range would feel better. You'd probably get better value ordering a whole pie. In general, a very, very good slice of pizza. Price notwithstanding, if you're a pizza lover in Houston, I'd suggest stopping here and trying it at least once. I often hear and see other people comparing pizza they find in Houston to pizza in New York City. The comparisons never make sense to me because, for one thing, the water is different from one city to the next, but also the ingredients can be different as well. One would also be hard pressed to find pizza in Houston which is identical to what is found in Chicago; New Haven, Connecticut or Italy. Each city's (or country's) offerings should just be appreciated on their own merit. With Home Slice Pizza, the first thought which comes to mind is: it's a welcome familiar sight (with lots of character and unique design) while driving along Travis Street. As I recall, this spot was once utilized by chef Monica Pope years ago. I love the exterior design, which incorporates colorful graffiti, unique signage in red lettering, the cool brick exterior and a "Hello"-inspired painting of Lionel Richie. Pizza-wise, I just wanted to try a pepperoni slice. And while it kind of looked like a slice one could get in NYC because of the thin crust, I also thought the crust wasn't as moist or saucy as what I would get in NYC. And it wasn't as cheesy either. Just thinking of the pizza I've tried from Ray's in the East Village in NYC, and I think of Home Slice as more of an Austin brand (with a bit of an East Coast flair) now in Houston which which will likely be around for years to come. My husband and I went on a Saturday night around 10:30pm. It was packed but nothing too crazy. The parking was horrible, just like any other place in midtown. They have a parking lot of about 6-8 spots, and the rest is street parking (not much lighting!) The restaurant had cute decor but the inside was very small in my opinion. They had a handful of tiny booths, and about 2 regular sized one. The rest of the seating is outside if you don't mind the weather. Now let's get into the food...... we ordered half an Italian assorted cold sub, white pie slice and a pepperoni slice. *The coldsub was SOOOOOO good! The half size was a pretty hefty portion, it was enough for both of us to share and it also came with a side of kettle chips. Honestly the star of the show. 10/10 would be back for this alone! *Pizza slices......ummmm didn't really care for it. Not sure if it was because we ordered slices, but the pizza isn't fresh. They obviously just reheat the cold pizzas that sit out in the front, its not bad but it just makes them too crispy for my liking. Stopped by to grab one of their make-your-own pizza kits and it absolutely delivered. The kit comes with dough, sauce, cheese, and spices. I had my own pepperoni at home, so I added that into the mix. I baked it on a pizza steel, and the crust came out beautifully crisp on the bottom with that perfect chew inside. Honestly, the dough alone is worth the trip. It's miles better than any store-bought dough I've tried. It stretches well, bakes evenly, and actually tastes like proper pizza shop dough. If you're serious about home pizza nights, this is a cheat code. I've also been to the Midtown location before on Election Day for the free voting slice, which was a great community touch. A fan favorite from Austin that I'm just now getting a try with at the Houston location. I really liked the original and think this one does well to recreate the same flavors. This is quintessential late night pizza, the pie you get after you helped your buddy who just got divorced move into a 1 bedroom apartment. The toppings are the most creative or artsy or high brow, they're American pizzeria staples. The bottom of the crust is toasted to almost cracker like crispness and edge stay chewy and light, definitely elevated from your typical post-bar night pizza. The interior is smaller with not the largest selection of seating, but the patio makes up for that. I was worried that parking would be a pain, but thankfully they have a small parking lot and I was able to find a space. The overall vibes are very Austin-y and weird, and I really liked how they had pictures and autographs of celebrities who have visited previously posted throughout the restaurant. You order at the counter and have the option of ordering individual slices. The staff was super nice and knowledgeable. Inside seating is quite limited but I was able to get a table. Outside seating is ample and there were definitely a few patrons eating outside. The family size salad was very tasty and dressed well, but it was quite expensive for the portion size in my opinion ($22). It was served with garlic knots which had a great chew and flavor. The white clam pizza was glorious. They are super generous with the clam topping, and the dough is aged perfectly and has a wonderfully chewy texture that you would expect in a great pizza. I had this saved as a "to visit" for some time. It's always pretty busy. Customer service was great. But the pizza was so so. Not a lot of sauce and cheese was very light. I ordered slices. Home Slice is where it's at. Despite opening their 4th location in late 2022, this time expanding to an entirely new city, they have managed to keep the same courteous mom-and-pop level of service as when they first opened in Austin 20 years ago. The server, who I presume might've also been a manager, thanked my friend and I for giving this place a try and checked on us once more before we left. Additionally, the cashier was a friendly person to make conversation with and gave us recommendations for the next time we visit. I initially ordered two pepperoni slices: one regular and one Sicilian. I don't know what got into me (I didn't feel THAT hungry), but they tasted so delicious that I went back to the counter for another regular pepperoni slice. Maybe I'm simply too uncultured on pizzas to appreciate the difference, but I preferred the regular pepperoni over the Sicilian since they didn't taste all that different and the Sicilian costs slightly more ($4 vs $4.50). Lathering a ton of chili flakes, parmesan cheese, and oregano certainly didn't make it any easier to tell the two apart, but they undoubtedly made for some very tasty pizzas. Also, I've never come across a pizzeria as ornately designed as this one. Whether dining by the entrance, inside, or in the backyard patio, it's impossible to not admire the Sicilian-themed patterns and checkered floors. It looks impressively majestic for such a small area. Speaking of small areas, parking can be tedious. The restaurant has a small lot that can only accommodate about 10 cars max, but street parking usually has available spots within 2 blocks in the day time. The cashier told me that their subs are a highlight of this establishment. I feel like they should share a spot on the big chalkboard menu of daily pizza slices if that's truly the case. Even though Home Slice made its name in Austin, Houston is really a direct beneficiary of their expansion considering the pizza game here (#1) has left much to be desired. While I can't completely say this is reminiscent of pies out in NYC, I will say it's on a similar level to the OG location in Austin. And thankfully, I've had good experiences there and enjoy what they have to offer here. The Midtown location is so ideal on so many levels. It's central to most neighborhoods in the loop and a stone's throw away from some of the city's most active nightlife venues. The only thing it doesn't have a lot of is parking, which is limited to a handful of spots in their dedicated lot. Street parking is where it's at for most folks, but that's not always guaranteed. The restaurant itself is one of the most unique in the city and they've certainly made the most out of the layout. The covered outdoor dining is a lovely place to enjoy pizza during good weather days and the interior has the open pizza kitchen, along with a narrow stretch of small'ish tables for mini groups looking to chomp down on a slice or three. I love the setup and enjoy the outside statues and seemingly distinctive decor. Their "tried and true" pizzas float between $28-32 for a large and while substitutions aren't allowed, customized pies are totally a thing. For the most part, their pizzas are solid with the sausage, ricotta, roasted red peppers being one of their most hearty options. I have also enjoyed their white pie with spinach, along with the classic pepperoni and/or plain cheese pie. The margherita tastes fine, but looks nothing like a margherita pie at most NY pizzerias (#2). The New Haven inspired white clam pizza was their most disappointing output for me personally, as it reminded me nothing that I'd see / taste in CT. I appreciate their attention to the fermented dough but sometimes the guys behind the counter overcook the crust a little well, resulting in a slightly tougher bite than usual. Their most expensive pie is the Sicilian, which runs from $31-34 with just plain or pepperoni as the options. The sauce-to-cheese ratio is right, seasoning is a tinge salty, and the "crispy bottom" crust is a bit well done most of the time. Of course, their menu is far more robust than just pizzas. Their cold / hot sub sandwiches sound fun but don't capture the same magic that I've had from most Italian delis in the boroughs. I do give them a solid thumbs up for the effort and would order the Italian assorted or turkey despite the hefty $21 price tag. I haven't yet had their meatball or parm based subs, but I'm going to make it a priority for my next visit. Ultimately, the guys behind the counter are super nice and I love that they sell by the slice. It's not as NYC as I'd like, but anything to bolster the pizza status quo in this town is a step in the right direction. I've driven past it many times (hard to miss if you're in the area) and was really happy with the quality and service. It was pretty busy so I didn't expect to have the best experience but the whole staff held it down. The two servers that were calling out names were super nice and accomodating. They tried to help me when they saw I needed a hand even though the line was out the door. We stayed outside which was really nice since the weather's cooled down. It felt spacious and inviting and like a cool spot to hang out. The wait for the pizza was 20 - 30 min which was fair. I half expected a rushed pizza since they were packed but nope. Ended up having one of the best pies with #6. Me and my gf devoured it. For a medium, the pizza was still large. The texture of the crust was crispy and firm and held up for its size. The globs of Ricotta were generous and the pizza was not greasy and overall well balanced and delicious. Definitely coming back in the future and probably going to order the same thing.
