At this point Brasil is a staple in Montrose and Houston. What I love about this place is how the vibe changes throughout the day. It is wonderful for a quiet working space during the day, can make a great date night during the week, and has a lovely Friday evening live music vibe. The food and drinks are always wonderful. After a disappointing breakfast at Brasil's awhile back, I decided to try them again. Unfortunately the food let me down a second time, so I'm taking them off my list for breakfast spots. I ordered the most basic eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. Everything but the eggs came out lukewarm to cold. The bacon and hashbrowns were not freshly cooked. My guess it was cooked earlier and just reheated. When I asked for my plate to be microwaved to be reheated, I'm guessing they decided instead to throw the bacon and hashbrowns back on the griddle and just overcook them to a hard mess of a meal. Sadly, the drip coffee was stale and not flavorful at all. I don't understand why the restaurant can't hang out at Baby Barnaby's or House of Pies and learn how to make a great tasting breakfast. The only real reason to go to Brasil is because of their copious outdoor seating. The back patio is lovely - ample shade and shielded from the busy traffic of Westheimer. Their food and drink is decidedly mediocre. I have never been wowed or impressed by anything from their menu, ever. Yesterday, for example: --Beet and goat cheese salad: 4/5 - no complaints here, it had the right balance of components, although the beets weren't the freshest. --Hawaiian pizza: 2/5 - enough pineapple, but really skimpy on the other components. And no sauce, just cheese :/ they threw handfuls of arugula on top to make it "gourmet," which is a huge pizza pet peeve of mine. (I will die on the hill that throwing wilted greens on top of a pizza is NOT something that should be done in order to raise the price by $3-5) --Margarita carafe: 2/5 taste, 1/5 experience - this was particularly bad, but also on-brand, for Brasil. Their happy hour chalkboard clearly advertised an $18 margarita carafe, on the rocks or frozen. We proceeded to order a carafe on the rocks, which our server argued wasn't a thing, until he turned and read the chalkboard. He then turned to discuss with his manager(?), who informed him, "yes, the carafe is $18 during happy hour, four margaritas for the price of three." Five minutes later, after we (finally) ordered it, they brought to our table a half-filled carafe that was mostly ice. Half-filled not being an exaggeration, it looked like someone had already poured out half of it. We barely got two margaritas out of that thing I've been to Brasil many times over the past 4-5 years. I thought this was a cute little hole in the wall on Montrose! They have their breakfast menu from 8a-12p, a special brunch menu for the weekend, and then their lunch and dinner menu from 11a-10p. They have a full bar as well as outdoor and indoor seating. The decor seems very "hipster" and clean. My husband and I came here for breakfast and we enjoyed it very much! We both had their Morning Eggs which comes with two eggs any style, a crispy hashbrown, wheat toast, and a fresh jam. Their hashbrown is divine! They also have pastry items and bake them daily, once they're sold out they're gone for the day. Everything was fresh and made to order, I also had their strawberry mimosa which was great as well. While the atmosphere was ok and the servers were very nice, the BLT was possibly the worst I've ever had. Plain wheat bread which was soggy and 2 very short pieces of limp bacon on the entire sandwich. There was bib lettuce, tho scarce. I wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

The staff is rude. I had sat down to eat and after about 30 min, a staff member came over and gave me some weird speech about how they don't like people sitting at their cafe for a long time. My friend has just gotten there and was about to order coffee but we decided to leave and go elsewhere because the behavior was so rude and invasive. I had literally just finished eating and was being rushed out. I understand a 2 hour limit, but no need to be rude. Plus the cafe was empty. Also, the food was super mediocre so it's not even worth the rude behavior from the staff. read more

This is one of my favorite places. There isn't really anything like it. Wonderfully ran by beautiful people, the owner is great and you feel it when you walk in. I've been a patron for 25 years and live in the neighborhood. The servers are all great, I recommend the breakfast tacos and the California Dreamin Hamburger has a kick to it- you need to share it with someone else. Everything is good and the music is specifically picked to suit the Bohemian atmosphere of the Montrose and the cafe. Music especially good at night. Pay close attention to the flowers and the music if you visit. I have never had bad service and we visit alot on Sunday morning for breakfast with friends and other times as well. They do not take orders over the phone for takeout. Weezie on West Main & Woodhead. 03/25/2024 I give it 4 1/2 stars. This is what the Montrose used to be 20 years ago. People in the montrose support local, try to do business in the loop and enjoy the unique and unusual that this area has to offer. read more

We came here for my friends birthday and it's got nice vibes (especially the artsy + garden-y outdoors), but the food is meh. You order at the bar, take a number, and then they bring the food out to you. We had a large party (read: 14) and they didn't take too long bringing the food out. You serve yourself with water at a water tank. I got the Brasil Burger, but my burger bun was kind of soggy, and I felt like the burger was greasy overall. They could have been more generous with the vegetables (lettuce, tomato) and it was definitely one of the messier burgers to eat. The sweet potato fries were great though! I tried some of my friend's Garden Kabboule Bowl (a salad) and it was way too heavy on the sour dressing. Overall, this place has decent vibes and was interesting to check out, but I don't think I'll be back because the food was subpar, especially for its expensive price (definitely a pricier than average place!) read more

I've been visiting this cafe for well over a decade and things really haven't changed here. I recently visited twice thinking the service was top notch. But after getting home and discovering they charged us on food we never even ordered; my thoughts changed immediately. Management is sneaky and fraudulent. I'm not really sure why you'd have the audacity to charge your customers on items they never ordered. It is a nuisance to revisit the cafe and wonder what really happened. Be very careful and aware of a situation like this! Make sure to ask for a receipt and watch if they try to swipe your card twice. I have always enjoyed the pizzas and tamales here. Soups are not bad as well. Many vegetarian and vegan items to choose from which is always a plus. There cafe au lait is one of my favorites and served in a tall glass. Just the way they present it in European cafes. I always ask for maple syrup in my coffee which creates a more cozier beverage. Sitting outside the patio in beautiful weather or inside the dimly lit cafe is equally as nice. The cafe style atmosphere appeals to me because of the casual yet chic feeling. It's one of the originals in this part of town as well. No try hard factor here. They've got a diverse selection of food and drink items. Its a quick choice that keeps ya belly warm and full. Brasil has been my favorite coffee shop for nearly 30 years now. Nestled in the Montrose area with delicious and eye catching sandwiches, salads, and pizzas, this is a great lunch or dinner spot. But it's their coffee drinks and relaxing atmosphere that I've always loved. I have been coming to Cafe Brasil on a regular basis for over 10 years now. Their food has always been great and the atmosphere is very pleasant. Unfortunately, unpleasant service can really ruin such experience. The "cashier" who took my order couldn't been more unpleasant. Apparently he does not like to be bothered with questions about the menu (even though there was no one else in line) and looked like he had better things to do than to be at the counter. Just really poor attitude for someone that is dealing directly with the public. Husband and I would normally come in for our lunch dates, but for now we will find a place with more friendly faces. read more

Fun spot for some aesthetically pleasing food and really good iced coffee!! It's kinda hard to find parking around the area, but I recommend one of the nearby neighborhoods and then you can walk over. I got the iced canela coffee and it's one of the best iced coffees I've had in a hot minute. read more

Would give more stars, but the parking situation really makes it tough for me to want to visit this place again. There empanadas were extremely good. I tried their salmon tacos, they weren't bad, but a bit too salty, I did like the kick of heat it had. The price you pay for the tacos isn't worth it. read more

Chose Brasil today vs Agora and Common Bond because we wanted to try something different we ordered a latte and the Mexican mocha which were both great we also ordered some kind of cake the Strawberry upside down 3 leches I believe that's what it's called which was terrible before the desert was added the tab was $8 something which was good we added the cake came out to $16.24 $7 for the terrible cake it was very dry and had no flavor the tres leches we thought it would be was not suppose to be that dry if your curious about 3 leches don't purchase its over priced as well not sure if we'd go back other than that cool place nice ambiance I've attached a picture of the cake read more

Brasil is still plagued by the same issue: rude employees. The woman taking orders at the front was surprisingly friendly, so it started off well. Then our food came and this woman was incredibly rude. She brought the wrong order (tamales and eggs) and we said it wasn't ours. She asked what I ordered and I struggled to remember the name (it was Eggs El Salvador) and then she rudely said "Tamales and eggs???" Uh, no, I already told you I didn't order that. Turns out she brought the wrong dish, but didn't even apologize. The food and coffees were great.. I just wish It was a more pleasant dining experience here. Based on the other reviews, It sounds like a top down problem with the owner, so doubt this will ever change. read more

Easily the worst service and food I have had. Initially, I grabbed coffee there. Not having finished half my drink, a waiter came by and told me I need to order food or leave. I got up and left immediately; I had only entered the restaurant 20 minutes prior. Recently, we paid $18 for the tomato basil soup. It was so bad we couldn't even finish it. The food 10/10! Loved every bit of the food. Had the struggle bowl with chicken & the margarita pizza! So yummy. Now for the one star : #1 they limit wifi to one hour so that you have to to keep asking for a new code. #2 idk if he was the manager or owner but he hovers like crazy as if he wanted us to get out. This wasn't the first time. So if you're trying to work and eat , just go to brass tacks because It was absurd. I would never leave a review but my colleagues and I felt impelled . I've been here over a dozen times and never had an issue until the rude owner came bothering me. He interrupted me several times. Despite buying food he basically kicked me out. Clocking how long I would be there. There were plenty of open tables. The man even opened the outside patio door (it's cold) near me. I feel like it was a tactic to get me to leave as if I'd been there all day. It's a coffee shop setting and I spent money. When he interrupted me again I told him I was on a call and asked if he could come back he just stared at me as if I had done something criminal. Will never go back. read more

The food is great, but the manager will ask you to leave if you are using your computer or working in the restaurant. A friend and I were asked to leave after 45 minutes a few months ago when there were at least 10 empty tables available. Despite a couple of other reviews, this is the case even if you have ordered $50 worth of food for 2 people and are continuing to buy drinks.... In my opinion, there are so many places in Houston available to choose from and I would definitely choose one of those. read more

Literally worst service in Houston. Doesn't even deserve one star. Every single waiter/waitress is snarky and rude (every single time). Every time I come here, I wonder why I did. There are multiple instances that I can list, but I'll name the top few. 1) I was wearing a pink sweater and the manager made a comment saying it was an ugly sweater... when it wasn't meant to be an ugly sweater. 2) Before I walked into the door, they screamed at me to put on a mask... like I hadn't even walked in the door yet ? 3) I asked for their wifi password and one of the waiters said they gave out too many passwords and he'd have to find one for me. When he asked the manager, he said they weren't giving any passwords because it was a holiday. Literally lied to my face. Hate this place and this service, they need to step up their game. 1000000000% don't recommend. read more

After a great brunch, continuous rounds of their mixed drinks, and being asked to move once, my boyfriend and I were approached at least 6 times to pick up my not yet finished beverage by various wait staff as well as the owner who asked us if he could get us anything else or if we were "sharing the one drink" even though we both had ordered so much. There were plenty of open tables, we even moved tables "preemptively" to accommodate the owner's request since he had a few phone calls requesting large tables come in. At no point was the patio full. After we moved to a smaller table, another couple took our place at the larger table that seats four. To spend as much money as we did, we did not feel welcome which is really sad as we love to come by since we live down the street and have been coming here off and on for a decade. It's just a really disappointing hospitality experience I've yet to experience here. Thanks for ruining our Sunday, we would have ordered more if you hadn't left such a bad taste in our mouths. read more

IF THE OWNER OF BRASIL RAN YELP: "Hi there. I've noticed you've been using our website for twelve seconds. Have you signed up for our premium service yet? We have a two hour limit per review you write, so if you're going to stay on the site longer then you'll need to write another one. I'll be back in four minutes to have this conservation with you again." Yeah, the other reviews about the rude owner are true. I lived in Houston 15 years ago and had nothing but fond memories of this place, and now that I moved back and got my vaccination I decided to come back here. I had moved tables from outdoors when I was eating to go back inside to work from my laptop, and the owner came by and gave me the hassle that everyone else is describing. I told him I had ordered a coffee and a meal (an employee took away the empty plate quickly because the place was mostly empty and there weren't that many other customers), and he eased up. The woman sitting a few tables only had just a drink, and he gave her the, like, extended version of the pushy chat he had with me. Buddy, if you're going to hassle a paying customer for that long, you really need to buy a "I'm an annoying man you have to put up with" voucher from them. From what I overheard, the owner wants Brasil to stop being a place people get coffee and hang out/study from, but into a regular restaurant for upscale dinner customers. The woman asked me if he had talked to me, and I said yeah but not for that long. I just thought he was being kind of pushy because the business was hurting due to the pandemic, but on Yelp I noticed the complaints go back several years. She packed up her stuff and left. Good job, owner! The first half of your plan to drive away your current latte-only customers and replace them with affluent hipsters is working! As for the second half: The 2021 economy is going great, so I'm sure those fine dining folks with tons of disposable income will show up soon. I was going to give this place a three-star review: the pricey food was good in the way that pricey food usually is and the other employees seemed nice (man, with that boss I feel bad for them). But then at one point the music volume CRANKED UP a very noticeable amount. I looked around the large main room: there were four of us customers, three on laptops and one reading a thick med school textbook. The owner was clearly trying to create an uncomfortable environment for the working/studying folks and drive them out. What a jerk move. One-star. Good luck trying to transform this cafe into the yuppie upscale dining "experience" that has no space for your current customers. Good bye, Brasil Cafe that I once knew. P.S. Hey owner, just take away the wifi entirely and remove the electric outlets if you don't want the laptop crowd. read more

I've been going to Brasil since 2009. I love all their foods , however their steak special is a fail. The steak was so tough that it was like I was sawing it down! It has absolutely no flavor and the sauce on top was disgusting! I suggest they either take it off the menu special or learn how to cook a decent steak! I recommend the pizza, burgers, quiches . Those are definitely the way to go! I don't want to give them bad stars because the other foods are amazing , but the steak really killed the vibe ! read more

My husband and I had our wedding at Brasil and found the experience to be incredibly dissapointing. The AC was broken, which caused the temperature in the room to stay at a steady and very sweaty eight-three degrees. Guests were quite uncomfortable, to say the least. When we asked the manager, Beryl, for something to be done about the heat, we were blown off and rudely shut down. After the wedding, we emailed her asking for some sort of resolution to the expereince but continued to be met with resistance and were actually blamed for the heating issue. We gave up after being left on "read" with no response or resolution. I work in customer service, so it is always incredibly discouraging to see someone NOT do the most essential/basic part of their job. read more

Mark ordered the fried cheese sticks, they were one of the items that I found worthwhile to return for. I opted for the Waffle feast. It included a waffle, that I added pecans on top to, two strips of bacon, eggs your way and hash browns. To say that I needed to add salt and pepper to the eggs and hash browns because they tasted bland and flavorless was unfortunate. It also was served at room temperature, because it was made from scratch, would think it be warmer to hot. The waffle was savory and had good mix and topped with the pecans made it even better. If you're on this side of town and want a change up from the "other breakfast diners" DOT would be where I stop. Fast, friendly service. Depending the food you get, it gets the job done for some sustenance to hold you over when you're not sure when your next meal is because you'll be in Galveston for 7 hours riding a float in the Mardi Gras parade.

My mom and I did love this place. We just left and will never go back because the Chef named AJ. Decided to harass my mom and I because we grabbed a napkin that was behind us. My hand was covered In Egg Yolk and my mom saw a bunch a napkins and decided to grab one for me which caused the chef who was sitting eating in the restaurant to attack us. Called us entitled said the napkin wasn't for us, that he knew exactly what kind of people we were, privileged ect. Giving he knows nothing about us or anything we've gone through. He then after leaving came back to tell us he was sorry but not actually. I asked him why he was going out of his way to be rude to us he responded because he know "exactly what kind of people we are." I Honestly can't believe this just happened. He doesn't know we spent over a year of our lives watching our love one die. He doesn't know anything about us, we were just trying to enjoy a nice lunch together before I go teach children and try to be a positive light for them through this mess. He deserves to be fired. I have never treated ANYONE the way he just treated us. ...now look who thought this post was funny.....Chef AJ. What a lovely person still harassing us. I love how you think us losing a loved one her Husband my dad is so funny to you. Berating us in public is funny to you. Houstonians be warned: The owner of the restaurant hates customers. I have never been to any restaurant where me or my wife have been overtly, rudely, and impatiently harassed by a restaurant owner. We were scolded for taking too many napkins (mind you we took three), we were again scolded for asking for a refill on our coffee (really?) and then reminded it would be 50 cents after our first refill -- even though our total bill was 45 bucks. As if that was not enough, we were asked to hurry through our brunch even though there were 10 empty tables around us. To add insult to all of this, Dan (the owner) pushed my wife when he started taking away the dishes with our food from our table -- perhaps because we had taken fifteen minutes to eat our breakfast? We had not even finished our food and he took away my breakfast plate! I just happened to be getting some coffee and was away from our table when he pushed my wife. He actually pushed her. Sick bastard. If you want to eat in peace, choose another place to dine. If you need more than one napkin, leave the owner a few bucks and ask him to shove them where the Sun should not shine. And, if you want a slobbering dog sniffing around you while you try to eat, this is your place. Finally, if you do go by this restaurant, be prepared for harassment. I had words with this poor excuse for a man, got in his face for pushing my wife and let him know if I was ever forced to return to his restaurant I would do so with a police officer, health department and other government officials in addition to undercover media reporters. *******PLEASE READ BEFORE GOING TO BRASIL***** I typically go to Brasil for coffee and coffee only. I get it and go home. This day I decided to get coffee and some pizza. Issue #1 : Order was wrong twice. I am a vegaterian and have been for 20+ years. Both of the orders had chicken on them. Even after all of this I wasn't upset. I had nowhere to go so I drank my coffee and continued to read my book until my pizza came. When my pizza finally arrives, the server tells me, that it was ME that made a mistake and maybe I didn't realize I ordered chicken. Why didn't this server just apologize for the inconvience and move on. I would 't have had an issue if they would have just apoloized. Issue #2 : I ask to speak to the manager. I wait for about 15 mintues for him. (It's Tuesday afternoon not alot of people there at that time) As I'm waiting a hear a man behind the counter say " Why don't they just get there coffee and get the f*ck out." I then got up, threw my pizza in the trash and left. Shortly after this experience, I told my friends and I was flooded with complaints about how rude the owner is. I hope they have the courage to share there stories. I don't write reviews. I dont really care to do it, even when I receive bad service. I just make it a point to never return to the establishment again. What I experienced at Brasil is something I couldnt keep quiet about. I love the environment (and convinced myself I loved the food and drinks), but alas ~ Brasil is losing yet another costumer because of its bitch! ass! owner! It appears that he's a ~ money-hungry racist who is anti-student, anti-costumer service, and clearly anti-mask because he pulled down his mask to speak to us (it wasn't even on correctly in the first place). ~ Like most bad reviews, he approached our table while we were studying for 30 minutes & asked if we were going to order anything else then proceeded to tell us that there was one table left.... (every table inside was vacant) .... as if we were fucking employees that were supposed to do something with that information. Sir - as someone who spent way too much money on my meal and drink ... who ~ the fuck ~ are you to ask me to pay for more food & the amount of tables left with your nasty germs. I am appalled. Disgusted. Nauseated. Turned off. Currently gagging. Did I mention he's racist? Kind of repulsed that multiple people experience this. Can't imagine how he treats his employees. Another hyped cafe that does not live up to its expectations, price or its name. Brasil is the kind of place you would go to when the cafe's and restaurants nearby are packed and you are in that awkward situation where the date with you is hungry and badly needs to use the restroom (Unless you happen to be the kind who entertains a date in a MacDonald's). Food is bland and portions are noting to brag about. Ambiance is alright with the option of seating outside. The owner of this restaurant, Dan Fergus (creepy looking bespectacled goon) does live up to his notoriety of being arrogant and unwelcoming. He expects his customers to leave IMMEDIATELY after they finish their meal. If you stick around to have a chat, he might come hovering around your table like any annoying fly. Check out a fellow Yelper, Rayjin Brainer X's reviews for more elaborate description of the impudent owner. The rest of the staff is quiet good and cater well. So you will be lucky to arrive here at a time when the owner/manager isn't around. All in all, not worth trying. I went in and asked for a chai tea latte. I watched the guy pour the chai tea mix and fill it to the top of the glass. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't latte stand for milk? Well, I'm no expert so I take my drink and take a sip. PUNGENT!! I almost threw up and asked the guy who made it to take a sip. He staggers back and says: yes... its strong, and I ask him if this is how its supposed to be made? He gets upset and goes to the back to get the manager. Meanwhile, another worker asks what is going on. I explain and he shakes his head saying, no problem. I watch as he pours the chai tea mix to about 1/4 of the glass, steam the milk and then add. The worst service that I have ever received in my entire life! I've been to this place five times. Each time worst than the last. Order wrong time after time. Takes 25min-45min to get food. I kept giving Brasil chance after chance because it's so close to where I work and it's very cute with pretty good food. After my last visit I will NEVER step foot in Brasil again!!! I am allergic to onions. I order a caprese salad and ask for no onions. They bring me the salad and it has onions. I tell the young male server "i'm sorry, i ask for no onions." The server says, "Can't you just pick them off?" I then proceed to tell them no I am highly allergic. The server takes my salad and sighs loudly, mumbling under their breath "b*tch" as they walked away. I just walked out. I later find out that the sever, was the OWNER! DO NOT SUPPORT BUSINESSES LIKE THIS! It makes me so angry that people support a place that doesn't care about their patrons at all!! read more

It actually enrages me that Montrose hipsters continue to line the pockets of an abusive, mean spirited owner. If you want more background, simply refer to the dozens of one and two star reviews for Cafe Brasil. The reviews speak for themselves. There are plenty of other locations in the Montrose area (Common Bond, Agora, Empire Cafe to name a few) that don't verbally berate and kick out customers for daring to enjoy a cup of coffee. Every dollar you spend at this place supports a man who has no business being in the customer service industry. Also- the food is terrible. Their veggie burger is the worst I've ever had. That's really beside the point though. I don't think I've ever heard of such terrible customer service. For 25 years, Brasil Coffee in Houston has been a must-visit for me. Even after moving away, I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in town. Their consistent excellence in service, drinks, and cuisine is remarkable. During my latest visit, the pork tamale was a standout. As seen in my photo, it was quite tasty! The only sidewalk in Houston leads to here, surrounded by a nice book store and trees low enough you have to sidestep and duck to maneuver into the lofted, airy space of this coffee shop with wine bar aspirations. Weathered, wooded tables wobble between traditional chairs, and the line is usually a little slow before you get to them. The coffee here is competent, and the salads almost perfect. It's a wonderful space to read or catch your breath from the summer behind large industrial windows that give it a sense height greater than you would think, outside hot and meandering on the street. My friends and I come here regularly. This has happened to me three times so I have to post this. The owner would come around and harass people. It has happened to me. My friend and I just finished our drinks and food and were about to get up to order more beer, and our table was cleared by a staff member. The owner came buy and ask rudely "Are you going to order any food?" Just extremely rude and inappropriate. We answered with "We have an open tab at the bar and just finished our food." And he walked away. This has happened to us a few times and just as regulars we do not think we deserve to be treated like this. This man is terrible.
