We stopped in for a quick nightcap on a Monday night. We were able to park right in front of the bar which was convenient. Street parking is free after midnight. I didn't catch the bartender's name, but he greeted us immediately. There was only one other patron and the staff was decorating the bar with Christmas decor. The bartender informed us that the bar wasn't fully stocked but asked us what types of drinks we like. Based on my preference, he suggested a Martinez. I had never even heard of a Martinez but I was open to trying it. He made it, looked at it, and said it didn't come out right. He asked if it would be okay for him to redo it which I of course obliged. I appreciated the fact that he didn't serve me a drink that wasn't properly made. The wait was worth it. The Martinez tasted like a sweeter Negroni and I really enjoyed it! I'm glad I was able to visit one of the oldest bars in Houston. It was super low key and chill which was a perfect way to end our evening. read more

Happened upon this cute speak-easy styled bar and lounge after my birthday dinner. Pleasantly surprised and appreciated that their Bartenders know their craft and make real, from scratch cocktails rather than throw simple syrup & triple sec into everything. This was Bar 2 on our Bar Crawl list. It's located right across the street from The Garden. My review reflects a NYE Bar Crawl so my review is based on that. For me the vibe of the place didn't really fit what we were going for. I thought it was cool they had a live band. But there was no space to sit and the bar was overly crowded. They had about four bartenders working the bar which they moved quickly. We had one shot there and kept it moving. We were in and out in less than an hour with the massive crowds. Maybe on another it when it's less noisy and busy it could be the place to be. But unfortunately that night just wasn't it for me. read more

It was a Sunday night and was not very busy, but they were playing great oldies music, the bartender (Jerry) was friendly and personable, and although a small crowd, we all seemed to all "vibe" and had great conversation. I've passed by this Houston institution many times over many years and I'm both glad that I stopped to check it out and hope to come again soon when they have live entertainment. Classic dive-ish bar in Midtown. Not huge so if you're there for music, arrive early. But the sound quality is good, the drinks are reasonably priced and there is a good deal of ambience. There is a menu posted on this Yelp page but when I asked at the bar if there was food available, I was flatly told no. But would absolutely return. read more

Saw an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Led Zeppelin tribute band there, "No Stairway". The bartender was super friendly. Loved the whole experience.

I came here recently at 4:00 p.m. one evening, and after paying for street parking, was surprised that the bar wasn't open. So, of course, I checked out yelp for any recent reviews or notices of it being closed down and was surprised that it wasn't. So I made myself comfortable and sat on the furniture on the porch waiting to see if someone would eventually open the bar. Around 4:30 p.m., a guy rushed to the door unlocked it and ushered me and another patron inside. Once inside, I admired the Christmas decorations and the set-up of this renowned oldest bar in Houston. I had no expectations walking in and was pleasantly surprised by the interior. The bartender was friendly, jovial, and charming, my drinks were strong, and the music was cool. The bar was pretty empty up until I left around 10 p.m. A live band showed up around 9 p.m. and started jamming some tunes. I don't really have anything bad to say about this bar - I feel pretty neutral about it. Perhaps I need to revisit during one of the times when it's popping to get a true feel of this bar. read more

WANT TO STEP BACK IN TIME? This bar has been open since 1947. I have been going there for years. I have never had a bad experience there. If you want to have a nice evening, I would highly recommend this bar. Leons daughter is there all the time. She owns the bar, and does a great job, decorating for all the major holidays. This is that bull crap right here. I got an email for listen in invite for new artist in town. No mention of any other charges. The listening was supposed to be from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. I didn't hear any listen in until 9:20 p.m. so that's already that bull. I happened to be lucky enough to meet a few of her friends and then when she came in at 9 o'clock I met her also. Coretta very nice lady but I was there to be there from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. So if you buy a mixed alcoholic beverage you get a free ticket for the buffet. I had already been somewhere that had free food and I was not hungry. The free food look like rice chicken wings and meatballs so you are not missing out on anything Now I was asked when I got there to start a tab. Same owners as Davenport so OK. I ordered 2 martinis and got a $3.90 service charge. No mention of this at any time. I would have been happy to pay cash if that was the case. Again no one mentioned this charge. Nice 30 n up type atmosphere but wtf?. So I assumed this was the gratuity n left no tip. U should explain this charge to guests. Damn shame. I met some nice folk but ended up at mongoose v cobra bar which is another hustle. Pay cash only here !! read more

Thank Jebus that Leon's has reopened (as of earlier this year) and still posses that vintage, old skool Houston charm. So what's new about one of H-town's oldest bar - besides new management? Sadly, the piano and jukebox are gone. However, expect the tunes to come from vinyls played from behind the bar. They've also revamped their drink menu, adding craft cocktails to the mix. The Pimm's Cup wasn't nearly as good as Anvil, but I had a great basil, cucumber and gin cocktail. It was so refreshing, I coulda sworn it was actually doing my liver some good. read more

I met up with a group of friends to hear a band play on a Friday night. Walking in it was super cute. The place is old, dark and divey - but in a good way. The whole building is really old, one of the oldest bars in Houston, so it's all part of the charm. It wasn't crowded when we arrived and we got seats right by the stage. When we went to order drinks I asked the bartender if he could make any mocktails. That was a mistake. I know, trust me I get the dramatic pushback buuut keep in mind only a couple people in our group of 10 were unable to drink alcohol that night. After that he largely ignored us. Well he acknowledged we wanted to order and then we watched him have a long convo with the only two people sitting at the bar, then watched him do several trips to restock things from the back room assuming they were for other orders. They were not. At that point we decided we'd just move the party to the next spot sooner than later. Overall it's such a cute bar, an ideal neighborhood watering hole tbh. That's why I was so bummed we didn't really have a great experience because I can't even say if the drinks were good! But the stage and seating area definitely make it a nice little spot for some live local music if you're in the area. read more

Love this place!! Unlike most places in the Midtown area, the people in this bar were actually friendly, laid back, and not pretentious. The bartenders were nice enough, even though there was one that was kind of like whatever. She was wearing a tank top that said, "Fuck you, Houston IS awesome" and I thought that the tank top was great and so I complimented her on that. Her attitude was like, "leave me alone!" Gee woman, I wasn't trying to hit on you. You're not my type! But other than that, everything else was cool. I enjoyed watching the bartenders make drinks with the mints and cucumbers and lemons and what not. Very entertaining. Within five minutes of entering the bar, people started chatting me and my friend up and we actually made a new friend that night and went to Byzantio to smoke some hookah after. Pretty cool. This place is located off of McGowen and Main Street so there's plenty of parking on the streets nearby. I parked about a block away on a Saturday night and it took me about two minutes walking from my car to the bar. Drinks are reasonably priced. I'll be back! read more

last year after eating across the street at mongoose and cobra...the name and outside look of this place intrigued me so, i popped my head in...when i saw all the chandeliers and old white vinyl chairs...i was in love today, may 18th 2017..i had my chance to sit and relax for a bit. i drove in from galveston [where i live] to see the cirque de soleil in north houston. afterwards, i came by leon's. it was about 8pm...not busy, band, theory of theives were setting up. i was the only girl in the place. SCORE!! [haha!] the bartenders were friendly and welcoming. koby waited on me and made me a strong manhatten...had to have some water for that baby!! I went to Leon's lounge after a hockey game at Toyota Center. When we made it there we found parking right away, but I can tell parking can be a problem. We stepped out of the car and Eren M didn't believe we were in the right place, it just looks a little questionable from the outside. We found the door and went it. The first thing we saw as we walked in was the narrow space to walk to the back. Once there we met with the rest of the Yelp squad and discovered the great things about this bar. Thanks to Mike W, we had 30 songs to choose for our musical entertainment. However, the jukebox played about 5 and then decided to stop working. The bartender was nice enough to go fix it, but didn't offer to reimburse mike for the other 25 songs we purchased. Moving on.. I really enjoyed the look of the place. It seems fancy in a antique rustic kind of way (visualize that!!). It actually has a lot of original touches to it. I have a thing for stained glass windows and couldn't get enough of the ones at Leon's lounge. I loved the dim room with the piano. I can so see myself just relaxing there enjoying the dimness. In reality the place is bigger than it seems, but still very compact. They have a small alley outside used for smoking. We enjoyed a portion of our stay in the alley, while Gretchen and Tony smoked their fags (just learned what that means). I liked Leon's lounge and can see myself going back. read more

I've been looking for more chilled lounge areas since I'm getting a bit older. Leon's Lounge seemed like the perfect place. However, it was just a big too tame for my liking. This place was a dive bar...but it was classy. They had real candles and chandeliers. There is plenty of street parking and this place is isolated so you can get in and out of here easily. Apparently they updated their drink menu and now serves specialty drinks. I had the whiskey smash which was made with makers mark, lemon, mint, sugar, and soda. The drink was just ok. It was on special for 6 a drink which saved a dollar from normal price. Our group stayed about 40 minutes, just didn't ever figure out the hype. read more

This was my first time so I can't compare to the way things were previously but Leon's has a lot of old-school charm. I hear it's Houston's oldest bar but I hear the same thing about La Carafe so what gives? One of life's mysteries but either way you have a lot of history here. Leon's has a speakeasy vibe with the dim lighting and comfortable seating. There's a long bar and then several rooms with couches and sofas. There are black and white portraits on the walls of celebrities from back in the day. They have a craft cocktail menu with 10 or so cocktails going for $10 a pop. I was recently reunited with Leon's thanks to a CMYE and I couldn't be more grateful because this place is awesome. I vaguely remember stopping by here forever ago in some half fatigued/half drunk stupor and being none too impressed. In fact I think I was actually creeped out, but this more sophisticated Leon's (perhaps I am harsh and hasty to have judged it so during its prepubescent years?) is totally rocking. I guess the interior can very accurately be described as "Lounge-y" now with the velvety chairs, interestingly snazzy decor and such. Very cozy and comfy, but still classy - what more can you ask for? The cocktails are pretty amazing and delicious. I typically order vodka and soda with lime (because I'm a ~lady~ and apparently old, as I can no longer efficiently metabolize calories, WTF), but I permit myself the indulgent alcoholic calories here because it's so worth it. Given that I am old, I can no longer recall the names of the drinks, but do yourself a favor and stop by during happy hour to try the various delightful concoctions. I would have to say that this is a pretty legit date destination, ahem fellas and ladies - so go forth and prosper. And keep it classy. read more
