We were excited to have Bonchon on Castro. While the Sunnyvale location is relatively close, having them closer couldn't hurt, right? Well, the team here needs a bit of fine tuning before they reach the quality and service of the locations in Sunnyvale and Daly City. The team here is a bit overwhelmed with the popularity of KFC. We expected a wait which was not the problem. Our name was somehow crossed out without it being called. Thank goodness we were constantly monitoring our place on the wait list. We ordered the 20 piece wings with Soy/Garlic sauce, coleslaw, and seasoned fries. Our order came out quickly with the chicken piping hot. Good thing! However, the sauce lacked the flavor and intensity of that of the other locations we had been to. Most of the wings were barely covered in the stuff. What's more, the tips were still on the flat/wingette portions. We all thought that to be strange, not recalling them being there at the Sunnyvale and Daly City spots. The food is still perfect and the service is alright, but still gripping about the extremely hot temperatures in the restaurant and also still no pear cider. I have now gone about a few times since my friends want to check it out and each time same answer for the pear cider "we don't have it". If it's not going to be ever in stock, it'd be nice to see it removed from the menu. I would recommend this Bonchon for take away food unless you want to melt in the restaurant. This Bon Chon is up on the rankings as one of the best ones! This is also a location that still gives sides (cole slaw/ raddish) with your order of chicken. Some locations started charging for those! I prefer the Bonchon in Sunnyvale. The quality is poor. My order looked like the sauce was slapped on quickly and missed a lot of the chicken. The chicken was dry as well. Came here on a weekday night to meet up with a couple of friends for an early dinner. The place was relatively empty and we were seated right away at a table. Having been to BonChon in other states before, I was excited to have the trusty chicken wings/legs -- spicy and soy/garlic. We ordered two medium combos, as well as appetizers of gyoza and takoyaki. The chicken was alright, in my opinion -- not as juicy and plump as I remember BonChon to be, but still tasty with the seasoning. The spicy chicken, in my opinion, is on the hotter side (coming from someone who generally loves spicy foods), so beware while enjoying! The gyoza were fried crispy and savory, while the takoyaki were piping hot and soft yet nicely chewy at the same time. We got the radish side dishes, but I think it would have been nice to have a variety of side dishes upfront like what I have experienced at different BonChon locations... (maybe it's location specific...) Other: Service was attentive and prompt the entire time. Parking is free on the street and in nearby lots, and it's not too hard to find. Very friendly staff who offer you hand sanitizer while taking your credit card. I ordered the Takoyaki appetizer which arrived very fresh and hot. The flavor was delicious and rich but there could have been more octopus inside each ball. Also if you're sensitive to fishy smells the dish does have a strong smell even to a fish aficionado like me. Overall pretty good! read more

The manager here (about 30 years old man) is the rudest person I ever encountered. We placed an order on the phone for 20 wings to be picked up. When we got there, the cashier just asked for the payment and we left with a box of wings in the bag. When we got home, we realized that there were only 10 wings in the box. We came back and were told by the manager that it cannot be returned. After a back and forth conversation, the manager persisted to not take back the chicken nor gave us the extra 10 wings even we are cool with paying more for them. The most infuriating thing is that he never said sorry, just keep persisting that this is our fault for not checking the box when picking it up. Who will ever open the box and check it during picking up? Also he claimed that we are just some cheap people who want free chicken wings. Bonchon was my midnight college craving, so I can't say how overwhelmingly excited I was when I learned they were nearby. Since we live in a world where takeout has become much more common, bonchon has become our tried and true takeout option. I live in Mountain View, so I thought I'd give the local Bon Chon a try. I always liked the Bon Chon in Sunnyvale. It gets crowded, but they never disappoint and at least they allow you to have two *different* sides when your order comes with two. Not true in Mountain View! I paid $27 for the medium, but they only let you pick either two sides of cole slaw or two sides of pickled radish. Super lame. Also, although I couldn't put my finger on it definitely, the recipe just didn't seem quite the same and the chicken wasn't as crispy as Sunnyvale's. When I was in elementary school I went to Six Flags on a school field trip. This was my first time at an amusement park that wasn't Disneyland, so I had no idea what to expect. We started off with the little kiddie rides. There was the pickled radish and kimchi slaw, which were fun for a first ride. Afterwards we had the soy sesame chicken, which was full of flavor and really satisfying But I was looking for more excitement in my life. Now we tried the spicy chicken. Best Fried Chicken Ever!! Impossibly crispy chrunchity goodness on top, with plenty of juicy tender meat that falls off the bone underneath, cartilage and all (yuuurm). Make sure to get the spicy flavor - it's pure perfection (the other flavor is good too but spicy is definitely the way to go). We even got take out and ate it after it had cooled down a bit Didn't matter. It was still delicious. One caveat to keep in mind is that I am by no means a fried chicken aficionado. I've tried a few in my days but generally it's just not my thing, so I can't say how it compares to other popular modern fried chicken spots. read more

The chicken and service is good. The review is mainly for the packaging. Their container was a flimsy box that came apart after being in the bag. The condensation softened the box and when we picked it up, the chicken fell through. It was less than 10 minutes from pick up to opening. read more

I'd have to say out of all the Korean fried chicken places in the South Bay, Bonchon is my least favorite. There are way better Korean fried chicken restaurants. But this place is usually busy, and when I went there was a wait. I personally don't like Bonchon because the chicken is too dry, and the sauce is too salty. The spicy chicken isn't as spicy, and the soy sauce chicken is just.. salty. I've also tried their fried rice, which was just mediocre. You also have to ask for radish, otherwise, they won't serve it to you. read more

Second location of bon chon for me to try out for the night of our monthly food tour. This place is smaller than the San Mateo store but has a more vibe to it since it's location is on the Castro street district. Unfortunately we are towards the bend of the night and had to wait for a good 30 mins and even then it was good. Nice simple layout of dining room and bar seating. Plenty of tv's to enjoy while eating the delicious fried chicken. Chicken stays crispy and juicy for the duration of the time we was eating. This time we ordered the Jap-Chae and fries, with the jap-chae being really good or maybe it's just that I don't eat it enough to taste the difference. Any-who, besides the fact if the servers getting mixed up with our foods and the revoke next to ours, it was a a good experience. If you love fried chicken this place is a must. read more

Flavorful fried chicken that are seasoned with the right balance of umami! My 4-year old is in love with their soy-garlic fried drumsticks and will clean out three pieces in one meal! She's in love in Bonchon and so am I. We've ordered takeouts on several occasions since covid hits and were always able to get our orders on time. Super disappointed - ordered via Uber Eats. Ordered the lunch special - boneless wings spicy; boneless wings soy garlic and strips sweet chili. The boneless wings were so small - like ridiculous to even count it as 1-piece of the 10-piece batch. The boneless wing was about the size of a normal teaspoon. Both boxes of boneless wings had multiple pieces that small. We usually order the boneless (not lunch special) and had assumed that was what we were ordering. The only difference on the menu is "boneless" v "boneless wings". I find it pretty deceitful there is no mention of how much smaller the boneless wing is compared to what you get with a normal boneless order. It really makes the cost of the lunch specials not so special at all. Also - the soy garlic and the spicy were surprisingly dry - both cooked and sauced. We love Bon Chon but I feel pretty ripped off this time around - no way worth the 67.00 charge on Uber at the end of it all. Even minus the Uber fees, still feel pretty ripped off. read more

I like Bonchon, but the quality is always very inconsistent. This one has been pretty good, but it's difficult to justify when you feel like you get under par quality. So here's the preface, this place is expensive, there's no doubt about that. However, the food is also pretty good, I really like their style of Korean fried chicken over most other places. But the size of their chicken drums can vary greatly, sometimes you'll get a mix of big drums and small drums or sometimes just all small drums. It leaves you feeling hungry if you don't get the same amount of food that you expected to get as a previous trip. If you're a big eater, then the combos will probably work for you since they come with 5 drums or a wing or mix equivalent. But for smaller eaters, a good option is the lunch special (obviously only during lunch hours). It brings the price down to something a bit more affordable coming in at under $10 after tax and tip. It'll give you 3 drums, a side, and pickled radish. It's enough to fill you up, though I imagine some wouldn't be full from this. As for the food here that's not fried chicken, I would probably say pass, it's not that special from the few items I've had. You're much better sticking to what they're known for which is fried chicken. The other foods are also on the more pricey side so you can probably find better elsewhere. read more

We've ordered takeout twice during shelter in place. More recently we tried the family meal - quantity/portion wise it's a lot of food and we had leftovers but it's a set menu with no substitutions so next time we'd stick to our usual order for flexibility. The family meal includes 12 wings (4 each of spicy, soy garlic and honey crunch), plain fried rice and 2 sides. We weren't fans of the honey crunch as it was too sweet with nothing to cut the glaze. The plain fried rice was as described and we'd rather get the kimchi bacon fried rice for more flavor. First time here and we had a great time. Family friendly and really tasty. We ordered a small order of chicken, Korean tacos, chicken sliders, fries and onion rings for our family of four. It was WAY to much food but that's ok because we wanted to try each of those options. Big portions aren't a bad thing! We also ordered a cocktail in pineapple flavor and it was so refreshing. 3rd Bonchon takeout within 2 months of quarantine times. This is just incredible. Still tastes amazing when we get door dash or a pickup. Tonight, my husband called it in and picked up. He said it was best experience With pick up. He felt so safe with all the worlds in masks and gloves even to receiving payment, and things were getting cleaned up and wiped as he was there. It was by far the most safe restaurant pick up experience. We get the large soy garlic drumstick with the radish. This feeds our family of 4x. We made our own korean style cabbage salad at home but the chicken was good it hits the spot every time. After an evening of drinking, I decided to go here for takeout based mostly upon the fact that this was one of the few places still open in Mountain View at around 9:30 on a weeknight. For the uninitiated, BonChon is one of several Korean Fried Chicken vendors in the bay area. Most joints offer a choice of just wings, just drums, or a combo of both, fried to crispy perfection and then coated with sauce. The magic batter recipe manages to retain whatever sauce it is coated with without going soggy for quite some time (definitely not before it is consumed). Until recently the only location in the south bay was in Sunnyvale, but they have since expanded their presence with several more locations. Ordered spicy chicken and fried rice for takeout. I was probably the last person to order at that point, but I was still impressed how quickly my order was prepared. Everything was on point. The chicken has the signature crunch you would expect from BonChon chicken, and each piece was thoroughly coated with the spicy sauce. The fried rice was good as well, although I would have wanted kimchi fried rice, which was not an available option. I'm glad that the menu has expanded without noticeably affecting the quality of the chicken. Hopefully, the quality will remain on subsequent visits. read more

My first thought when I saw the Bonchon construction sign on Castro was pure excitement. My second thought was concern: would it be delicious and reliable like Sunnyvale Bonchon, or would it be confusing and portion-scarce like San Mateo Bonchon? Having visited last night during their soft open, this is definitely Sunnyvale Bonchon. We arrived around 7:30 on a Friday with a group of 4 and had about a 1/2 hour wait. The list was actually quite long, but since they're just churning out the same chicken constantly, the service and turnover is quick. Castro Street also has some seating for you to lounge around outside. Between 2 of us, we split a medium soy garlic combo. The drums and wings all met the classic Bonchon combination of juicy meat, crunchy skin, and sweet & savory sauce that is delicious no matter how much you have already eaten. I was also pleasantly surprised by how many appetizer and side options there were: we got the Takoyaki, which was hot and had dancing bonito flakes on top. I will note that since the chicken comes out so quickly, the appetizer actually came later and was part of our main meal. The medium combo for 2 was too much for us, but it reheats nicely. Let it warm up in the toaster oven, and the skin was still be crunchy the following day. Hopefully they can keep the quality and experience up after their official opening! read more
