When I think of Bon Chon in the greater Boston area, I would expect it to be good right? Well well well - you can either come to this Lowell location and be as horrifically turned off as I was that you will never want to step foot in there again, or you can read this review to save yourself time and money to know that it's NOT WORTH GOING to Lowell Bon Chon. I don't have much to complain about the Bon Chon's in Allston or Cambridge, but just to caution you - this Lowell one is so bad, it caused me to open a Yelp account just so I could write an honest review to warn you before you have "the worst dining experience of your life".
I came in during their grand opening week on a Friday evening. Not all the seating was full, yet we still had to wait maybe about 10 mins before we could be seated. And it is not like they are understaffed - there were about 3-4 employees at the front desk.
When we are asked what we want to start with beverages, we are told that they are not serving alcohol because the liquor license has not be obtained yet. We want to order a combo of wings and drumsticks, but are told that the pickled radish that normally comes with the order has run out. Therefore, we need to choose an alternative side order, but cole slaw is no longer available. Then we decide, ok, let's order white rice and kimchi as sides. When the chicken finally arrives after 45 mins, we are told that they ran out of rice 45 minutes ago. So we don't get our rice. On top of that, the chicken that arrives is not the right pieces - we ordered half spicy/half mild combo of wings and drumsticks. All of the chicken came as drumsticks. We ask the waitress who gets the manager. The manager apologizes and says that we can either wait another 30-40 mins for wings, or have some amt reduced off our bill. She also informed us that since there was no more rice, they could offer us French fries instead. So being the last possible side order, we take the French fries. The waitress tells us that the fries are definitely complimentary, but then when she gives us the bill, she says she has to check with the manager. Our bill came as the original amt - but we flagged down the manager who informs us that the server should have seen her first before giving us the bill - clearly that shows they are not on the same page in the communication. Fortunately, we did get a little off our bill as the manager promised. We noticed that the guests in another table who arrived later than us were served their chicken first before us. When the fresh fries came, they were piping hot but super greasy - definitely need to wipe down the oil. We order the Okonomiyaki (Japanese seafood pancake). When it arrives - scares the crap out of me that the entire dish is in MOVEMENT - as if there were moths or maggots on the pancake! I ask the waitress why it is moving - she said that it is dried fish flakes that is absorbing the heat from the pancake sprinkled on top, and that there is nothing raw on it. As I cut the pancake, the flakes are still moving. I still get shivers just thinking about it. Eating it was not a very pleasant experience - it's like eating a plate of dried moths on your pancake! I tried not to eat the flakes - had they just served the pancake without the dried bonito flakes, the dish would have been a lot better. It really does not need the movement to put a surprise to my meal ;x The chicken itself - I would say it wasn't as good as I had in other Bon Chon locations - it was ok. For waiting for 45 minutes for our chicken, it's not worth it. Just the fact that our orders weren't done right and that there was so many things that went wrong that night that the restaurant ran out of food and the staff was very disorganized and not communicative with each other - they need to improve how they run their franchise, otherwise, this is just gonna put a damper on Bon Chon as a whole. read more
