a variety of food items on a table
    Anna C.

Celebrated my boyfriends birthday last night at Shabu Shack. Overall, we all enjoyed the food and would come again if we wanted hotpot without making the drive to Boston. The service was not the best but also not the worst either. The food took a while to come out, We had to ask for water a few times and felt like no one really checked in on us or came by to clear the table as plates were empty. When the staff did come by, the waitresses were friendly. As a newly opened restaurant, I do feel like there are some things that need to be worked on. For starters, they charge $14 minimum for broth. It can be one flavor or you can choose two. From the photo I post you can see that there is hardly any broth in the pot. For a relatively large pot, the broth was filled about half way. The portions are small for the pricy menu and the only menu item that we ordered which we did not enjoy was the thick cut, tough beef tongue. Cute place but kind of small for hotpot. Probably about 12 or 13 tables and a bar area. If you are in the mood for hotpot and you're in the area, it's worth trying but be warned that you may still leave hungry.

Great service and super yummy broths. We got the beef, veggie, and mushroom platters with some rice and udon and drinks with a really nice atmosphere and plenty of extra food. For 6 people/ extras and drinks it was only around $200 with gratuity so a great value. Enjoyable experience all around

I would give this negative review if I could because my family went in and ate during their meals they found flies in the soup this is honestly disgusting and disappointing.

Bad experience overall, price bad, food bad, service terrible. I would not recommend this place at all.

I've never had such good tom yum broth at a hotpot place!

There is nothing fancy about the place, but it is super clean and comfortable. During this past visit, I had the spicy girl roll that had generous amounts of fish that was fresh. For sashimi you get three nicely, proportioned cuts of fish. The accompanying salads and soup and other things are always good. The service is just so efficient, which is highly appreciated.

It was fairly busy for a Tuesday night, which was a good sign. The miso soup came out first and looked a little watery at first, but the flavor actually grew on me by the end and had a nice umami taste. The salad was simple but good, just a little heavy on the dressing. For the entree, I ordered the hibachi steak and chicken but ended up getting steak and shrimp instead. Honestly, the shrimp was really good, so it worked out fine. The steak was a little chewy/tough, but still decent overall. The vegetables and rice were pretty average. Best part of the meal by far was the tuna avocado roll. Big fresh pieces of tuna and avocado, simple and really well done for the price. Service was solid and pricing felt fair for the amount of food and protein you get. Overall, a solid local spot and I'd come back again. 4/5.

Wasabi Shumai: Nice nasal jolt. Softer, looser, wetter, more finely ground inner texture than typical. Not warm at all. A little below average. Egg Rolls: Crisp outside, moistly stringy inside (in a good way), with decent flavor. Could use more stuffing, and it's cabbage based (some hate, but I don't), but it worked. A little above average. Moo Shi Beef: Big, tender beef chunks in surprising abundance-- around 70% protein, which is practically unheard of. Vegetables crunchy and moist, as opposed to swimming in liquid. Four pancakes were enough. Above average. Mongolian Beef: Another surprise here, as it arrived sizzling. More big chunks of tender beef, sitting atop onions and other vegetables beneath. Not much crusting or additional flavor, but the natural beef flavor and just enough juices to keep it going were sufficient. A little above average. House Fried Rice: Light brown grains, but plenty of beef, pork, and shrimp to add both flavor and moisture, taking it to a middle ground between subgum fried and yang chow. Some egg, some peas, some carrots, some saltiness (noticeable but not problematic). Above average. Nothing hit elite, but good time for sure, and for a sushi-first restaurant merely sidelining in Chinese, more than respectable.
