This is our favorite Cambodian restaurant. It is authentic, which is clear from the staff and clientele (the local Cambodian community). I found the food to be vibrant and flavorful. This was our first taste of Cambodian food and we are here for it. I have tried numerous dishes at this place. The rural sour soup with catfish is my favorite there. The broth is so vibrant. The kefir lime leaves give it a beautiful aroma and flavor. The sourness of the broth and the umami (probably from the fish/shrimp paste) is a gift that just won't stop giving. The chunks of catfish take this dish up several notches. The greens are also a great addition and they aren't your typical greens you will find in an American supermarket. These are Cambodian greens. I also liked their pickled mustard green soup with pork ribs and chicken lort noodle. The lort noodles had a great snap to them. Quite unique! Cambodian cuisine is a hidden gem and this place is a great place to try this beautiful cuisine. I recommend giving this place a visit. read more

Seriously good and hearty food options. 4 star cause there was issue with the AC and then the server kept forgetting stuff he himself mentioned he is getting. The pepper sauce in the beef lok lak hits high notes on all fronts. Funny how it took me to my childhood of nowhere close to Southeast Asia though Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand is not like oceans apart. The Phnom Penh noodle soup is great and I am not afraid to say it's way better than the usual pho that we get. The crispy tempura calamari is one of the best I have had although it's a bit chunky and not thin strip as but hey that's how I like it. I remember red rose was the place to go for mi ga thung special. It def does not taste the same like the past. Everytime I go to Lowell I think about this place but I don't think it's a spot I would return to satisfy my cravings. It was very mid and service was decent. The flavor of the noodles isn't the same so that's a disappointment. I got beef on a stick and that was good. That's why I'm giving it a three star. I think simply Khmer is so much better for authentic Khmer food. read more

I was excited to try out this place after I read that this restaurant was a James Beard semi-finalist. I'm just shocked that a restaurant outside of the Boston (and nearby towns) actually got some recognition. And I mean this in a nice way - I hate that everything is only in Boston! I was in town for a Showcase Cinemas showing, and it felt like a perfect opportunity to finally come here. This restaurant was easily accessible off of Exit 89B on in I-495, and then Exit 5B shortly after. Parking feels a little limited with only about 13 spots shared between the several businesses here. I manage to grab one just as someone was leaving. The restaurant interior felt like a typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese place (okay, I know it's Cambodian). Nothing to write home about. There was plenty of seating available I arrived, and I was sat at a double-booth table. The menu is large and fairly overwhelming, but there are enough pictures for you to point at something that looks good. I was already prepared before arriving here and I knew I had to try the Beef Loc Lac. These seem like steak tips. Small chunks of beef, with a sweet glaze. Delicious. It came with the ubiquitous bowl of rice, and a dipping sauce I was not a fan of. It was very sour which felt like an odd pairing, but that might just be my unfamiliarity with the cuisine's flavor profiles. I mistakenly ordered the fried chicken wings thinking I would be hungry to eat two different dishes. When they arrived, I was already full from the Beef Loc Lac. Oh boy, these wings were deeply crunchy! I didn't detect any notable seasoning, but they were very good plain wings. Overall, I enjoyed my food and hope to come back here again to try out more stuff. read more

Not sure if it was just an off day for them or if that is a regular issue, but I ended up getting the avocado shake. This place was recommended to me as the number one Cambodian restaurant in Lowell. They have a huge menu and I can see why they have such a cult following. I went with their top requested item, the Lok Lak - Khmer Shaky Beef. Their version has a strong caramelization on the outside (very sweet). The texture was almost like jerky; I'm assuming because they twice cook it for extra flavor. While people seem to love it... I am used to a more juicy bite when I eat Lok Lak and was not a huge fan of the jerky texture. Don't get me wrong, it was still good! The Cha Kroeung had minced chicken instead of the usual chicken morsels I'm used to. Beef sticks tasted like your run of the mill beef sticks. The food here is good, but I wouldn't say best Khmer restaurant in the area. It is a bit overhyped so I kept my rating at a 4 star. I am definitely down to come back and try more menu items to hopefully up my rating! :) read more

Stopped by on a weekend afternoon and it was busy. The restaurant is way bigger than it looks from the outside. The service was slow and inefficient, but friendly once they stopped by. We tried a dry noodle dish with soup on the side and a beef salad. Both were fine, but could have been more flavorful. We also shared a durian smoothie which was very tasty but wayy pricey. No prices on the menu so kinda a gamble... didn't expect $10 for a smoothie though. Overall, an okay experience, but would definitely try other places first! read more

Hole in the wall Cambodian joint at Palin plaza with a surprisingly large space inside. Very casual, menu can be daunting but they have a picture book for those not familiar; it lets you see what looks good and order that way. There are no prices in the picture book but prices in the menu you can ask for. Service isn't attentive but is not rude either; it just takes a little patience, so relax and enjoy. The food is outstanding. Hot Wings. Gargantuan wings with sturdily crunchy bumpy exteriors, extremely juicy interiors, and a sauce that blends sweet and heat better than any similar Southeast Asian style wing. Superb. Deep Fried Pork Bung with Pickled Mustard Greens: An assortment of flavors and textures, and the fact that its intestines might scare you, but it's delicious. Best shared with two or more just in case. Very appealing sauce hinting at sweet, but with savory underneath. Sourness of the greens cuts the richness of the protein. Spicy Quail and Lemongrass: A slightly-pricier and more-than-slightly-better version of the traditional Cambodian chicken with lemongrass. More crunch, more flavor. Onions and jalapeños complement nicely. Delicious and great with rice. Rice with Pork Chop: This is actually a misnomer, because it comes with TWO kinds of pork chops. On the plate are chopped fried pork chop chunks, some with bone, all crisp and shiny with a slightly sweet glaze (balanced by seasoning and marinade). In a bowl is another pork chop dunked in a fragrant, herby broth. This one is more subtle, with shred-apart delicate tenderness. Supporting both are a chili sauce for dipping and a small bowl of pickled vegetables. Beef Lort: Rice noodles, neither thin nor thick, with a little chewiness, with bean sprouts, protein, and a light sauce thrown in, like a lo mein. Beef Loc Lac: I think of these as Cambodian steak tips. They're marinated and grilled beef chunks with a light, slightly sweet glaze on top, a little smaller and sweeter here than elsewhere. Tasty. Green Papaya Salad: I ordered it spicy (you get a choice). Lots of heat, lots of herbs, nuts on top, and lots of delightful funk from fish sauce and fermented shrimp. BOMB. No frills, but they have everything you need. They are allergen-friendly and can modify their soups to not include certain meets/to be vegetarian. The server was patient while I asked my questions and has a good memory because she even brought my friend over a free coke (he's a regular and he normally orders this). There's parking only in the front so sometimes parking is a little tricky. Everything here was delicious! Loc lac and kathew kaw ko were our main dishes and they were cooked perfectly. A friend of mine who lived in Lowell recommended this place. It was my first time having Cambodian food and what I can say, it was fabulous! Hands down 10/10. The beef Loc Lak was great and I enjoyed the special noodle soup and eating it with the fried dough stick. My family also got sweet and sour soup and fried tilapia with tamarind sauce which were delicious as well. Would highly recommend all these dishes! The employee was friendly and happy to answer questions and provide recommendation. I would have to say the prices are a little more expensive than I thought but would still come back again! I've been going to Red Rose, since the early 90s. It was probably first experience with Cambodian cuisine , and I've gone back many times over the years with my children! We all love this place. Their food is authentic Cambodian, and their hospitality is off the charts good. I love their Sach Ko Ang (Lemongrass Beef sticks). And their fried rice is so good. Beef Lok Lak? I cant get it anywhere else that tastes this authentic like my friends grandmothers cooking :) Highly recommended. read more

Got take out for the long drive back to the North Shore. By the time I got home I totally forgot about it and ended up eating it the next day which is not as fair of a judgement on the quality of the food. I had a small seafood noodle soup which came out to $13 with tip. There were large pieces of squid, imitation crab meat, and fish cakes with the noodles. I do wish there were more fresh herbs included but luckily I had some fresh scallions in my fridge to make up for it. The broth is much sweeter and garlicy compared to the Vietnamese pho. I'm not sure I can say I was wowed with the food and therefore am uncertain if it is worth the drive for me to come back. But the staff were friendly and it was a large space with some parking available out front. If I find myself in the area, I would certainly try them again. read more

Not only are there likely hundreds of cockroaches in that kitchen, but the kitchen staff and management is ambivalent about the problem. We made a stop here on the way to Portland, and since then, we've been coming back regularly since I haven't found any other place in New England that satisfies my Hu Tieu cravings. Indeed, the Hu Tieu at this place is magical enough to bring peace to all. So what is Hu Tieu? It's a Vietnamese noodle dish with pork broth. However, some places will offer it in a dry form without broth. For those of you more familiar with pho, pho is normally a beef based broth. With Hu Tieu, you get an assortment of seafood toppings such as shrimp, imitation crab meat, and fish balls in addition to your pork. To get an even better experience, ask for the fried dough since it really compliments this dish well. As far as cleanliness and service, the restaurant is ok. SEASONED! First time having Cambodian food, and boy was it AMAZING! Loc Lac with rice and a HUGE side of hot wings. Everything is so well seasoned with new flavors (for me) and cooked to perfection. Loc Lac was slightly crispy and juicy, with a peppery (not spicy) sauce for dipping. Chicken wings were very very crispy and very meaty with a sweet and mildly spicy sauce (think sweet chili sauce, but better). Will be going back next time I'm in town for sure! read more

Quality of food is still good, but the pricing is crazy' two rice dishes just cost me $35 dollars and it wasn't even seafood or anything special. Ordered a beef lol lac with white rice, and grilled chicken with fried rice. I asked if the soup came with it, that would normally come with it, but the waiter said no. Only if you eat dine in, then you would get it for free. If I wanted the soup it would've been an additional $2 more. Crazy. Man, I have no idea of where to start. The food was fine. Decor was fine too. We ordered fish with ginger sauce. If you look at their menu, nowhere on their menu states that it contains pork. We already told the server that we don't eat pork--yet he failed to notify us that this dish has pork! We asked the lady why does the sauce contain pork and no one notified us. We politely asked if we can get another sauce. She became combative, aggressive and argumentative. She said she will charge us. She even gave us an attitude and said "everywhere will put pork!" No, lady. They don't. In my entire 30 years of life, whether, Cambodian, Thai or Laos, they don't put that in the ginger sauce! By the way, price on the menu isn't what you'll be paying.
