First impression was that the color scheme, decorations, and menu all seemed to be dated and uninspired. The staff were polite and attentive. I ordered the salad and Salmon Oscar. The salad was good and the blue cheese dressing I chose was house-made. It was good. My girlfriend got the wedge salad which I think was a bit expensive since it was a $6 up charge for a wedge of iceberg lettuce from the standard salad that came with the entrees. My Salmon Oscar with asparagus was very good. I enjoyed every bite of the salmon and crab. My daughter's chicken parm came with a ton of linguini. My girlfriend got the signature crab cakes which she said were mostly crab and not filler. So while I thought the menu was dated when reading it the food was well executed.

The kicker of this experience here is that after ordering wings and being told later the kitchen had actually run out, they came back and gave us a full order of wings on the house for the mistake (there may have been a cancelled order, or miscommunication in the kitchen.) If you're in town, I'd definitely recommend this place for a low key, laid back place to get some drinks and definitely wings.

I've been craving a big bowl of their tortilla soup and a buffalo chicken sandwich for years. A recent family outing took us to Monroeville and I knew that we had to eat at Max & Erma's since we were in the neighborhood. The inside is a tad 'odd', with seasonal Christmas lights everywhere decorated in a Fourth of July theme. The table was mildly sticky, the booth seat was mildly uncomfortable, and there was a mild smell of dirty dishwater and/or urine at our seats. All-in-all, the restaurant feels tired and judging by the cleaning products and bucket placed on the ice cream bar, it looks like the workers are used to it being that way. It looks remarkably like the Max & Erma's in Cranberry right before it closed its doors. Service was prompt and friendly. No complaints at all. The food was on point and was as great as I remembered it to be. We got 2 quarts of tortilla soup to go so that we could share the nostalgia with our family and they were equally as smitten. I hope this place stays around and that it gets a little refresher. Generations of yinzers need their tortilla soup, buffalo chicken, and let's not forget those unforgettable cookies to go!

Max & Erma's went from a quaint downtown restaurant to a decent regional chain with pretty reasonable prices. This location was convenient for a bunch of people coming from different directions. We got some of their fried pickles as an appetizer and wow, they were really good. They could have been bigger pieces of pickle, but they were crispy and not soggy at all. I ordered the Pittsburgh Salad with Grilled Chicken and ranch dressing and it was delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, the service was good and the final bill for all of us didn't break the bank. I'd go back!

But I can tell you your breakfast was very traditional. Nothing super exotic or trendy. I'm a Southern girl so I was looking forward to getting country fried steak, gravy and eggs... They're country fried steak is a special that's named after the owner or one of its friends or something... And all it is is steak and gravy... Kind of interesting for a breakfast dish. No eggs. And was one of the most expensive meals so adding eggs would have really put it over the top for breakfast. So I elected to go with a variation of hash browns that I'm accustomed to getting the south from waffle House... Scattered, diced which means tomatoes, and covered which means slice of cheese. Although they restrict the ability to buy beer and wine in grocery stores in Pennsylvania, there is no restriction on when you can get a alcoholic beverage like there is in the south... Bloody Mary with breakfast at 9:00 a.m.. there was a long line to wait for a table so my friend who's the local went to the other entrance for the package store and saw there was ample room at the bar so that's where we went. We split an omelette and got some bacon on the side. The bacon was clearly oven baked and extremely crispy and is barely flavorful. The waitress was nice and attentive at the bar. And she had the southern charm of calling us honey and sweetie even though she was younger than us. My friend says she used to come by there often when her kids were younger or for their weekly specials. It's a large restaurant so plenty of tables in the traditional space. And I guess because of not having extra weight stuff they didn't encourage sitting in the bar... We sat at the bar so had the direct attention of the bartender. You can see from the menu there's lots of options for food which is probably why it's such a popular place.

The pizza slices have big bubbling crusts with pepperoni so rustic cut that you will wonder if they accidentally gave you the whole piece... over and over again. Don't sleep on their meatball pizza. Because you will have basically full size meatballs for every slice... and they are delightful. We had family in and bought a large order - and we opted to try their sandwiches. The Chuck Roast sandwich and Turkey Rachel both sounded delicious... and Gateway Grill does have fresh smoked meats too! Takeout is a trip. In a full restaurant, you have to kinda stand in the way at the front counter and flag down someone to grab your order. But they definitely do a lot of to-go pizzas so you'll be able to handle it. Unfortunately, with their current to-go containers, the sandwiches ended up being sopping wet with condensation... the bottom toasted bread on both was basically dripping instead of crunchy. The fries had lost all texture too- air fryer to the rescue. I'd still recommend going - just stick to only pizza when ordering takeout until they find a way to ensure quality of other options.
