What a fabulous recovery at this restaurant. We had stopped going there because of poor food and service. We happen to be in the area so after about three years of avoiding them, I said why not give them another try. The food was absolutely fantastic and the service was exceptional. It had a pleasant ambiance you could actually have a great conversation without excessive noise. I ordered the fish dinner and did they ever redeem themselves. It was no longer like Mrs. Paul's frozen fish, two very nice meaty breaded filet served with French fries that were hot and crispy cooked just right. Great snap when you crunched them. The breading on the fish was not overpowering and the fish itself was large and robust with the flavor of fresh caught cod. I was very impressed. Our waitress Caleigh who was wonderful. Where's the bathtub filled with ice cream? Yea, that was a thing and one of my memories as a fat kid! I also really loved the pita pocket thing they had but why talk about the past. Max & Erma's went from a quaint downtown restaurant to a decent regional chain with pretty reasonable prices. This location was convenient for a bunch of people coming from different directions. They make a great Long Island Iced Tea (not as good as Carl's Tavern, but who does?) and also has some pretty good food. We got some of their fried pickles as an appetizer and wow, they were really good. They could have been bigger pieces of pickle, but they were crispy and not soggy at all. I ordered the Pittsburgh Salad with Grilled Chicken and ranch dressing and it was delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, the service was good and the final bill for all of us didn't break the bank. I'd go back! read more

Was easy to get to off the PA turnpike. Told the server we were in a bit of a hurry and she kept things moving without making us feel rushed. Got the turkey burger and a regular cheeseburger. Both were yummy! Very grateful that they have gluten free buns that actually taste good AND they grill them so they don't just fall apart. We haven't eaten at Max & Erma's for years. We were pleasantly surprised at the friendly staff, great food at an affordable price and a fantastic wait staff. We used to go here fairly regularly, but have not been in a few years. I'll start by saying that the hostess and server were very nice and I have no complaints about the service. Food came out promptly (I had not even finished my salad), and although we had to ask for our beverages to be brought out, the server apologized profusely for the oversight - no big deal. But as soon as we walked in the door, there was a musty smell to the entire place. It was very unpleasant. Also, when asked "booth or table", I requested a booth - but expected to be seated in one of the (many available) larger booths, not the smaller ones in the back room. With 4 of us, it was uncomfortably cramped (had I known, I would have asked for a table). The food was just OK. I really liked the option for the "Village" as a side salad, it was better than a typical side salad. I got the salmon, and the sauce was good but the salmon was a bit overcooked so on the dry side. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon on the downside of the lunch rush-parking lot was a little unkept, so I had some reservations.upon entering, i felt better, the restaurant was appealing inside. Hosts greeted us upon entering and we were seated immediately. Debbie was our waitress and she took our drink order. We ordered nachos to split for an app, and meals included kids mac and cheese, a grilled chicken sandwich, a rice bowl and the chicken tender meal. All were good and reasonably priced. She was very efficient and was very friendly. 2. Food - We ordered (pictured: ~ Sautéed Mushroom and Swiss - I got my burger well done. It was cooked very well, but lacked seasoning. Nothing to complain about, because it was still a really good burger. ~ Chicken Caesar Salad - chicken was JUICY and seasoned to perfection. Huge portion and the dressing alone was really good! Stopped in for a bite to eat and a cocktail on a Friday around 3 pm. They were not busy at all, plenty of tables in the restaurant area were available. However, the hostess sat two adults with 3 children at a table in the bar area. Children should not be allow in a bar area. Used to go here all the time but the last time I was there, the manager was so rude. I couldn't believe it. I always forget about Max and Erma's, but I always have a good meal there. They have a pretty plentiful menu (mainly lots of sandwiches and salads.). The service is always good. There is a little bar area and a cozy dining area that is always decorated for the season and has a nice fireplace in the middle. We met my parents here today. Most of us got sandwiches, salads or soups. My wife had a tortilla burger(a specialty). I had a tomato, chicken mozzarella sandwich. Daughter had French onion soup. My mom had a Cobb Salad. Pleasantly surprised by our stop here today. I was out with the "salmon ninja" lad of mine, and he wanted to eat at Max and Erma's. It had been a number of years since I'd been there, but not for any reason. Seated comfortably and quickly, our server was quick with drinks and order taking. My son with the salmon, of course, and I went for the Mediterranean tacos. But first, the tortilla soup. Oooohhh...good. very good! Happy we got bowls, not cups! The lad's salmon with the chili lime topping was given a big thumbs up. My tacos were great! Served quickly and correct. Our server - Juliana - checked in on us often, with water and coffee refills. I liked this place and it was heavily recommended according to yelp as there are about 5 locations in Pittsburgh. We were sat right away and it looked packed. I wasn't really hungry but stopped at bathroom before. I liked the bathrooms - very clean and nice. There were a lot of things I could've chosen to eat but decided with fish tacos. They were pretty good and the fish was great. Our waitress was overall nice and became more attentive as the time went on always filling drinks, etc. The best part was their management team and the dessert. We were out and about and wanting to try some place new, so we stopped at Max & Erma's for lunch. We went in knowing full well that they're having staffing issues (isn't everyone?) so we didn't expect speedy service, but it was pretty on point for service times. Our server, Kim, was great. She was super friendly and helpful. I was afraid I'd try her patience since I'm really picky about club sandwiches, so I wanted to make a lot of changes to my order (more on that later), but she wasn't bothered in the least, even repeating things to make sure she had it right. Appetizers didn't take long to arrive at all. We got the cheese skewers, which are basically cheese balls (instead of sticks) on little skewers. There's 4 on each skewer & 4 skewers on each plate. They were hot and they were good, but we didn't eat all of them because we wanted to save room for our meals, so 2 skewers came home with us. Kiddo ordered the chicken tenders with fries (adult meal version). The fries were nice & hot, but the chicken was overcooked. You could look at it and see it was too brown, so I was surprised they sent it out anyway. She wouldn't eat it so the server offered to get her something else. Kiddo didn't want to risk the chicken again, so she opted for a kid's meal mac n cheese instead. The mac n cheese isn't the Kraft mac & cheese that a lot of restaurants pawn off at restaurant-quality prices. It was good mac n cheese. Only problem, though, was it was cold. And I mean cold, not just barely warm. Kiddo had me poke my finger in the middle of the bowl, and yes, it was definitely cold. Again, Kim was more than nice. She said she'd take it off our check. I tried to "argue" with her because kiddo said it tasted good, so we were going to take it home & heat it up. I didn't feel right not paying for something that we were going to (eventually) eat. But she insisted. Manager even comped us another $5 on top of that, which wasn't necessary. Times are tough on everyone right now, so I'm more patient than I probably usually am. As long as they make it right, I'm good. And they made it right...and then some. My sandwich, though, was delicious! As I said, I'm picky when it comes to club sandwiches. I wanted mine on white (whole grain adds a distinct flavor that overpowers the subtle taste of the turkey imo), and without the ham, and the cheeses. It arrived exactly as ordered. And it was good. I even told the kiddo while I was eating it, "I'd come back for this. That club sandwich at the Plaza Restaurant at Disney cost twice as much as this one, but this sandwich is twice as good." So, yeah, I was definitely happy with my meal. All in all, there were some issues, but all were resolved to our satisfaction, so I'm not going to knock them more than one star for that. The food that we kept was really good, from the cheese skewers to the club sandwich to the fries (they were really hot...that's rare anymore), so we'd definitely go there again. read more

Oh jeez where to begin... So, I came here to celebrate an occasion with my family. We had come mainly because of the infinite wings. The first waitress who was going to seat us wouldn't put us where we wanted to go despite it being midday and only like 3 tables were taken! Manager sat us and we ordered. She was nice, but food took forever! The wings were awful and I couldn't even finish them. Then, when we thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. The manager informed us that there was a gas leak inside the building, but not to worry or rush. This scared the crap out of me because all this time I had had a headache that kept getting worse. So we booked it out of there and as soon as we did, fire trucks came rolling into the parking lot. We had a group come here after an event, and our experience was about what was expected, except that we waited so incredibly long to have our order taken or to get our bills etc. This was a bit disappointing as we had to ask multiple times and they were not even that busy. I also never got the cookies that came with my three-course meal, and when I asked for them the ones I got were cold (I like the warm ones you normally get!). This is a nice place to go to in the Monroeville area if you want a good sit down dinner experience. Right now they're operating at limited capacity because of the labor shortage, so when I went yesterday with my partner we had about a 30-40 minute wait which we did not mind. We had the same waitress this time as we did last. Our experience with her was similar both times which is where my only real problem lies. We're in our 20's so we understand that people in the service industry are being worked harder b/c of the shortage. However - she seemed to be really out of it the whole time, both times. Did not introduce herself, we had to ask for napkins, straws, silverware, etc. Last time, she did not bring a part of my meal. Then when she put anything down on our table, she would quickly move somewhere else in the restaurant without really acknowledging us. It just felt really uncomfortable and like she didn't want to be there? It probably wasn't intentional but it was very awkward. The reason I'm making a big point of this is because it's happened twice with the same waitress, although because I understand waitressing isn't fun & because of the shortage, we did not decrease her tip. Usually I order a burger and a bowl of their tortilla soup. This time I ordered the soup with their pulled pork sandwich which was kind of unremarkable. It was just a pulled pork sandwich with onion straws on top, with a side of coleslaw and fries. The fries and coleslaw were very good but the sandwich itself was just not very good for $11, it tasted a little fast-food-y. My partner ordered the soup and buffalo wings, which he liked. We ordered their chocolate chip cookies which were good as well. Anyway, regardless of all that their soup is always consistent and delicious; no matter what you order you know the soup will always be tasty. So I do recommend their tortilla soup and their cherry cola burger especially, but I would not recommend the restaurant based on the quality of service that I've personally experienced, at least if you're really big into server interaction. Yes we will be going back in the future. We go to Monroeville once every couple of months and always make a stop here for the soup, but I think we'll try to branch out and try another restaurant the next time. read more

Good but not great. We sat at the bar for dinner. The beer was nice and cold, however the bar smelled of stale beer. My wife ordered the chicken salad sandwich which she enjoyed. I ordered the soup and 1/2 sandwich meal. The tortilla soup was nice, however the 1/2 Reuben was pathetic. It was served on thin rye bread with 4 or so paper thin slices of corned beef. The burgers have not been consistent or cooked right, I ordered mine well done, it came pink in the middle the other was ordered Med-well it came closer to medium...I sent mine back, they brought back the same burger only now cold char and dried with a new piece of cheese on it. Pleasant but forgettable. Came with a party of nine. Several of us got the $10.50 3-Course Combo featuring a cup of soup (or a Caesar or house salad), a burger, endless fries, and a warm cookie. What a great deal for hungry people! Others enjoyed salads paired with soft, garlicky breadsticks. Thumbs up for the thick, juicy hamburgers. With the 3-Course Combo you can upgrade to a specialty burger such as bacon barbecue or mushroom 'n Swiss for $1.50. For the adventurous, there is the "Garbage Burger," piled high with bacon, cheddar, Swiss, American & mozzarella cheeses, grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms, guacamole & marinara (bold)! Prices were very reasonable. There are great weekday specials, but they start at 3:30. The menu was a tad underwhelming. Besides the "Garbage Burger," nothing really stood out. But sometimes you just want a burger and fries or a simple salad with that ranch dressing that just tastes SO. MUCH. BETTER. at a restaurant. For that, Max and Erma's fits the bill. I did appreciate their friendly service, laid-back atmosphere and unique decor (kitschy, but not in that "T.G.I. Fridays circa 1999" way). Fish tacos here are pretty good and I'm picky about them. What do I like? The fish is grilled, not fried, and not over-cooked plus there is adequate sauce to make for a moist taco. All-in-all, I was pretty impressed, not easy when it comes to something that seems so simple in concept but execution of this dish evidently is not based on my many attempts wherever I go, Pittsburgh or elsewhere. Other options I've ordered here are basically ok, not stellar, but ok. It's just that there are so many options in Pittsburgh that a three-star "OK" place is not usually on the radar. But, for us Monroeville residents, it's close and adequate. Oh, and for hubby, his fav beer was 2.00 at happy hour prices, making him happy. P.S.
