Despite a very slight drop in quality over the years, as long as they still have their Tortilla Soup this place will never disappoint. That stuff is like crack. I could eat 10 bowls a day of it. I went in early with a sweatshirt with about 50 cents, and started snooping around, just to find the soup in front of me. Like it was crafted by some sort of Alchemist. Historically this location has been pretty good aside from an occasionally stale bread stick, but it's been really bad lately. We order here pretty regularly, typically pick up, but the last few months have been pretty poor, and increasingly so. Of our last 5 orders in the last ~ 2 mos, we have had issue with 3 orders. Twice, we had missing items (no sides for the items, left off) which required refund, or us to drive back to the restaurant to pick up the missing item. This last one, I ordered the avacado Cobb salad. It had discolored, browned lettuce on the bottom, but was topped with spring mix to cover it. The salad mix tasted a bit off. And the chicken that was supposed to be on the salad was missing entirely... The food is too expensive for the quality we've gotten lately, especially when they leave off sides and completely ommit parts of the order. I really liked this place in the past, and sure a mistake here or there happens, but it's been really off lately and I don't know that I can recommend the location anymore. Solid choice for American fare. Burgers, soups, salads and sandwiches are very good. I highly recommend the tortilla burger or the salmon salad. They also have decent happy hour specials. Max and Erma's has contracted quite a bit in recent years, and if this location is any indication, I can see why. I arrived around 8:30 PM on a Tuesday evening in mid-June. Staying at a hotel nearby, I wanted to eat somewhere close and, with it being almost a year since I last ate at Max and Erma's, decided to stop by. The restaurant was empty, not horribly surprising for a Tuesday evening. My order was taken quickly, pulled pork with "endless fries". On past visits to other locations, the fries truly were endless, with the server offering to bring more fries out as my plate emptied. Sadly, that was not the case this visit- I was never offered additional fries. It almost felt as if they were trying to push me out of there. I get that they closed at 10, but I was handed my check an hour before closing. Why have a sign saying you close at 10 if you want to start pushing people out an hour before then? read more

I was staying at a nearby hotel and popped over for happy hour & dinner. I sat at the bar area, as they had baseball on the tv screens in that area. The service was great, I wasn't at the bar, but a table & my server was friendly and professional. The happy hour specials are good & the food was better. I had a couple of local beers on tap & a brat burger...both were very good. The few obvious local regulars that I talked to were very pleasant.... Its varied menu of American dishes lists calories, so you would think that might inspire a movement away from half-pound hamburgers. It hasn't yet, and hubby said his was good. Our waitresses name was Nastasja and she didn't fill our water once, had airpods in, didn't take our old dishes, and we paid in cash and she did not give us our change. I don't get to visit here very often so I was very disappointed with my experience! I got seated quickly but had to wait several minutes for a server to greet me. I ordered a sandwich which was a little messy and the fries. Sadly, the sandwich look like somebody stood across the room and whipped each component on top of it because it was a hot mess. This restaurant chain used to be excellent, great burgers, salads and desserts. It is a shell of itself. Burgers are small and overcooked, salads are wilted and boring and desserts are tiny for much higher prices! Food often comes wrong and or ice cold with no apologies from servers. This is traditional chain style restaurant. There are only a few left in the mid west over the past few years of changing hands from company to company. My gf wanted to try this as we have driven by this hundreds of times but never stop and ate. It was around 9pm at night when we went. Bar area was semi full and main dining room had a few people in it. Took a few minutes to seat us even thou 3/4 of the dinkg area was empty and the lady said she would be right back.Drinks came fast and our order was taken pretty quickly. My problem when you order appetizers is when they show up and main meal shows up within 5 mins or less after. Which apps showed up in under 6 mins and then 2 mins later our main order. Had just started eating my soup and then burger arrives. By the time I ate my burger it was just warm. They have bottomless fries. I know why.. they give you a small amount of fries. Then when we ordered more fries... they didn't show up. She brought our check and still no fries. The food wasn't bad. Actually was better then I expected. It's really a limited menu by the way of items to order but the items are unique in one way or another. I got the cola burger and you could really taste the cherry cola onions and bbq sauce. The experience was just ok. Not enough people to cause the delays we had from wait to sit and time it took to do things like refill our drinks. I would go back if someone was visiting that wanted to go but not just to eat a normal dinner. Yesterday was my first trip ever to any max & erma's. Shocking, right? I was shopping in Monroeville and initially had another spot in mind. On the way, i drove by here and decided to dine in since i had never been. I ordered tortilla soup. When it was time to order, i smelled delicious bbq through out the restaurant and asked my waitress what that was from. she said it was the Cola BBQ Bacon burger so i decided on that. The burger has cheddar, cherry cola caramelized onions, bacon, onions rings and cherry cola BBQ sauce. The burger was great and extremely filling. I really wanted to try some of their dessert ( pretzel sundae, banana cream pie ect) but i was entirely too full. i had a good experience here. I love the Chicken Tortilla Soup so much! Our server asked if we had been in before and since they redid the menu. I stopped her and had to make sure the soup was still on the menu. My dad and I stopped in for dinner because we don't have a location close in central PA hut we were going to the football game. We were in and out in under an hour. The menu is not as overwhelming because they slimmed down to focus on certain dishes. We had the Cod BLT and a cheeseburger. Max and Erma's is one of those chain restaurants that you visit when you have a gift certificate, or in my case agreed to go to lunch with a co-worker who already decided upon the venue. Don't get me wrong, this place is fine, I have never had a bad experience and for the most part the service is also good. I decided upon the dynamic duo, it came with half a sandwich, I chose the club, and soup or salad. I chose their Tortilla soup because it is basically like crack to me. I can't get enough of it and hey the menu says guilt free so it has to be good for me right?! My lunch mates ordered salad and soup and we waited. That was the worst part the wait. We ordered almost immediately yet we waited over 30+ minutes for our food. The waitress though very nice, wasn't in any hurry whatsoever. I mean it was lunch, we didn't have 3 hours to chill. Overall we were at the restaurant well over an hour and fifteen. Pretty long for soup, sandwich, and salad. It's fabulous and the reason for 4-stars and not three. I'm not a burger fan and yes, their salads are good. Not award winning good, but consistently good, which definitely matters. Monroeville's M&E upholds the corporate standard, well. Here's another reason for going here: Trade Wind Sangria. They offer four sangria versions, but this one is a springy version and really hit the spot: Sweet and white with a nice peach flavor. Service? This store has always managed to have a great, cheerful & competent staff. So, as nothing can satisfy the need for their tortilla soup, Max & Erma remain on the extended food circuit. read more

Max & Ermas is very similar to the other chain restaurants (Applebees, TGIFridays). What makes them stand out is their support of the community. And their chocolate chip cookies! My first visit to Max and Erma's was during a fundraiser for our parish school. If you took the coupon that was distributed at church, a portion of the proceeds from your meal were donated to the cause. It was crowded, probably because of the coupon, but with the level of service we received, you would never have known that almost every seat in the place was occupied. I have visited several times since and had enjoyable experiences every time. Even when we had a large party of 18 they were still efficient and friendly. There are so many great options at max and ermas, but the best are the tortilla soup, burgers and salads. I order the tortilla soup every time I go. Creamy with a nice little kick and a crunch because of the tortilla strips. Go on a Wednesday and you get a free warm chocolate chip cookie! I usually just go for their tortilla soup. It's something about those little fried tortilla strips that really make it special. I was in the Detroit Int. airport the first time I tried their soup and man was it awesome. I've also had one of their salads. Can't remember which one it is at the moment but it was pretty good as well. I guess with a place like this you can't really go wrong. I had a great server Dylan. He gave us great service. ...but unfortunately my whole check was free before I even got my food. There was a fly frozen between 2 ice cubes. Then we ordered 2 burgers well done and they were both very pink. We asked for bacon & mayo on our burgers and didn't get it until our food was cold. Then I looked out the window and seen a spider making a web on the window. I tried to look past this very horrible experience until I went to eat a French fry and a gnat flew off the fry. We go here occasionally on Sunday afternoons for a good family meal. One of my favorite features about this place is the variety of seating available: traditional booths, high-top family tables, large round tables, so on and so forth. Shame on you Max & Ermas. Your food may be good but your customer service sucks. The Monroeville location was one of my sister's favorite restaurants and we held a family dinner there in Feb on the evening she passed. Today I tried to make a lunch reservation in August for the 20+ of her family flying in for her tombstone unveiling but was told we would have to stand in line like everyone else trying to get a table that day. Great answer-can't wait to return from cemetery only to have to wander around the restaurant seeking each other out so we can share memories. Think we'll go elsewhere. read more

No sweat tea. After three attempts at ordering it, they finally said they don't serve sweat tea. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich. It was so salty, it was like they poured the salt jar in it. I'm not normally one for writing Yelp reviews as I think most of you Yelpers might secretly be murderers, but I enjoyed myself so much here I felt compelled to write one! This was my first encounter with a Max & Erma's and my girlfriend and I found ourselves dining here twice during a few days stop in Monroeville last week. Our first time we both had Caesar salads (delicious!) followed by Cheeseburgers and endless fries. I highly recommend these. The service was fast and the food was really good. Our second visit, I had the TMC sandwich (Tomato, Mozarella, and Chicken... no relation to Turner Movie Classics,) which I'd been eyeing during our first visit. My girlfriend had the Big 'Ol Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, which lived up to it's name. In a word: GINORMOUS! Both sandwiches were fantastic and our server, Ginger, was personable and hilarious. The fare: typical American. Decent selection, served warm and quickly. Nothing spectacular but serves its purpose well and is as expected. The service: phenomenal. I have a few quirks when I dine because restaurants/bars end up being my office- I need an outlet, I may be on the phone, I require an IPA, there's a nearby hotel discount, etc. The hostess, AGM, server and bartender handled everything with grace even if they weren't familiar with this and did everything they could to make me happy (Thanks Annessa). Plus, they did so with a genuine smile. The bartender wouldn't even serve a half foamy beer (my fave) and comped me a larger size of a different drink for my trouble. I really wanted to like this place. It looked interesting on the outside and inside. The Asian Chopped Salad looked good, but my wife and I asked to substitute salmon in place of the chicken. The waitress said that might be a small up charge and we said that was fine. A bit later, she informed us the upcharge would be $6 extra each! This made the salad a $17 salad. We also got kids meals for the two girls. When the food came out, the salmon was small. Considering the salmon was SUBSTITUTED for chicken, I could not believe I was paying $6 extra for this. Lesson learned: Don't substitute! The salad was good, but very small and underwhelming for a $17 salad. Now...I unfortunately need to talk about the kids meals. Well....they are SMALL! I pity the poor 12 year old kid who may order off that menu. The kids got Mac and cheese, fries and fruit. The mac and cheese may have been 6oz and same with fruit. I think there may have been 18 fries in the kids meal. The kids were still starved so we asked for more mac and cheese. Of course, we got charged for those too. All said and done, bill was $70 with tip for 2 adults and 2 kids. We left hungry and disappointed. As a final note, the waitress was slow and didn't visit our table often. It seems others have decent experiences here, but we certainly did not. read more
