Local Monroeville flavor. Big portions... and just that hometown dive that every town needs!! Being Gateway alumni, there is something nostalgic about Gateway Grill. Circling the small parking lot looking for your spot, reminiscing on the alumni sports team photos on the walls, and doing the twist in the entryway to navigate your way to your takeout, Gateway Grill is not much... but the food is usually fire!!! The pizza slices have big bubbling crusts with pepperoni so rustic cut that you will wonder if they accidentally gave you the whole piece... over and over again. Don't sleep on their meatball pizza. Because you will have basically full size meatballs for every slice... and they are delightful. We had family in and bought a large order - and we opted to try their sandwiches. The Chuck Roast sandwich and Turkey Rachel both sounded delicious... and Gateway Grill does have fresh smoked meats too! Takeout is a trip. In a full restaurant, you have to kinda stand in the way at the front counter and flag down someone to grab your order. But they definitely do a lot of to-go pizzas so you'll be able to handle it. Unfortunately, with their current to-go containers, the sandwiches ended up being sopping wet with condensation... the bottom toasted bread on both was basically dripping instead of crunchy. A good experience. Place was very busy but well staffed, and the manager (maybe owner?) seemed to working very hard including cleaning tables, getting people seated, answering questions from staff and patrons. He was very involved, controlling the floor and getting things done. The Restaurant was clean and well staffed. I came from Houston Texas on a trip staying here in Monroe. Knowing what good bbq and ribs tastes like I decided to try the baby backs ribs. Yea, a little taste of Texas. Fall off the bone, hot and well made. The bbq sauce was a sweet version which I love, but just seemed to be missing some kinda kick. For those who love the tangy, smoky more hot sauce may not find less appealing but I give it a 9 out of 10. My dad also tried one of the sandwiches and was very good. Great local small business located in the heart of Monroeville on Northern Pike Road. Parking is somewhat limited and can be frustrating that can be tight fitting at times. Nice sports bar themed restaurant with a wide variety of dishes including pizza, steak, hoagies wings, and great tasting apps and more! Little pricy but worth the price! Huge beer selection that's also available for takeout in the six pack shop. Stephanie is great! We request her whenever e visit. Very friendly and attentive. Great breakfast food! We stopped in on a weekday during lunchtime and it was pretty busy. They serve breakfast until 2pm every day. My husband and I split the cinnamon roll which was okay, nothing special. I got the breakfast burrito which was 1. delicious and 2. huge! The potatoes were to die for. I always love a family dinner at Gateway Grill! It's the ultimate comfort food and space. The staff greeted us immediately and our server was super sweet and nice. She was quick to take our order but it did time some time for the food to come out, but when it did it was hot a delicious! Their pizza is meant to be eaten fresh and right away! I have been ordering Pizza from Gateway for years. I have been all over the country and Gateway Pizza was one of the best I ever had in my 70 years on this planet. The crust is perfect, the cheese is nice and the sauce is tasty. Gateway changed the ingredients and ruined the pizzas they now make. The crust is flat and hard. I have never been disappointed with a meal. From pizza, wings, ribs and the breakfast is a hit as well. The Salmon is grilled, flaky and delicious. We originally came for breakfast/ brunch, but unfortunately, the menu changed over 2 minutes before we sat down, so we had to get lunch. I wish they had the breakfast hours posted on the website or menu because then we could have made an informed decision before making the drive. Now, that does not take away from the food we ordered. First, the raspberry mule was delicious. Honestly, it was one of the best mules I have had in a while. I found out the secret was in the ginger beer. It is raspberry flavored! We ordered a "small" pizza, but this thing was enormous. It had 8 big slices and it was really good. The cheese pull on it was great, and the crust was crip and soft. I do wish they added a little more meat on it, but overall, I can't complain. Our server was friendly and attentive, and I was glad we gave them a try. This is an edited review as things have went down hill with this restaurant and not sure if it's the management or a combination of everything. The good yesterday was TERRIBLE with my ribs looking like they were made for an animal and the wings were just wings which were not flavorful. Tell me how you can't baked potato skins with no bacon, everyone don't eat freaking pork you idiots or let alone red meat. They would not make me more without bacon saying they can't do that which makes no sense. This place is overrated and I know there are some good reviews, but I had no choice but to leave a bad one because it was BAD. Gateway is very popular and for good reason: the food is good, portions are large, service is friendly. My family has been coming here for years and I'm finally taking time to write a review. The restaurant seems to have the perfect amount of seating because it's often nearly full but we've never seen anyone waiting (probably happens, we've just never seen it). There's a bar for drinks if you choose. Food generally comes quickly. This evening Connor waited on us. As with the other servers, he was friendly, knowledgable about the menu and drinks, and checked on us frequently but not too often. We split a one-pound fish sandwich and a large calzone. We both have leftovers for later. The fish sandwich was excellent and usually what I get. The calzone was ready, I don't know how, like in ten minutes. And it was delicious. So, why only four stars? It's a great gathering place but it's often so loud that everyone has to scream louder to hear one another or you just give up talking and enjoy your food. Not sure the noise is the fault of Gateway ... it just is what it is ... but it can get very loud. This seems to be a super popular spot in Monroeville. Lots of people have said great things about their calzones, and I thought I had to try it. I ordered a large calzone and their strawberry ice cream for takeout. When I talked to the lady over the phone, she said the calzones typically came with toppings, but I just wanted it plain with cheese. Once I got to the store (at 3 pm or so, when most places aren't too busy) there was a pretty significant wait at the takeout area. The guy handed me the box with my calzone and asked if it was mine. It looked like it was, so I said yes, but... It was one of the flattest calzones I've seen in a while! There is very little inside. I understand you usually have toppings, but couldn't they just have added additional cheese? It's the same price either way. And, there is virtually no way this was a large. Don't get me wrong, it filled me up, but I wasn't stuffed. And this thing was around $17! That's crazy, even if it was big. The calzone has a unique charred flavor, which was interesting but not my favorite. It is quite bready and contains very little cheese when compared to other cheaper places. They do serve a good amount of sauce with the calzone, but it's a bit watery. I'm still shocked people call this "huge" or "the size of a small child." This was a mediocre portion at best, and it was soggy too! I asked if the peanut butter pie was made in house. It wasn't. So, I decided to try the homemade ice cream. It is nice they make it in house, but the flavor just wasn't that good. I had strawberry, and once again, the price is a bit much for the portion ($4 for one scoop). It had a weird sour cream flavor to it as well. All in all, I definitely had high expectations for this place and was thoroughly let down. Starting with COVID protocols, it's really inconsistent here. I would have said nonexistent, but there are a few booths with plastic dividers. However, there are just as many other booths without them. Makes no sense. There's no sign posted on the door requesting masks be worn by nonvaccinated people, and no one in the restaurant (servers, cooks, or diners) were wearing one besides us. Kiddo got the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I ordered the cheesesteak sub that comes with potato chips. French fries are a $2 upcharge. My sandwich was okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to write home about either. It was difficult to eat because everything was sliding off one side of the sandwich while the other side was plain bread. I had to keep fighting to get it evened out. It would have been easier had I been able to cut the sandwich in half, but the knives they give you are basically only for spreading butter, though they might be able to handle cutting a French fry in half, but that's debatable. I asked for mayonnaise instead of Italian dressing on my sandwich. That meant I got three packets of mayo. That's not bad, except they were impossible to open. I did the "tear here" thing and it only tore it above where the perforation was, not on it, so nothing came out. Even with getting my teeth involved, I could NOT get any of the three open. I'd thought about cutting it with a knife, but that knife wouldn't have cut anything. It was very frustrating. Kiddo only ate half of her hamburger. She said it tasted like it was burnt. When I removed the top bun, I saw why - the bacon was black. I would have asked the server for a pair of scissors for the mayo packet & perhaps another burger without the seriously burned bacon, but she never came to check on us after delivering our food. We didn't see her again until it was time to pay. That was annoying, but it was even more annoying to hear her checking on all her other tables. That made it go from annoying to insulting. While we waited for our party of seven we were served our drinks. Our waitress was over the top accommodating and was super with my three nephews. Even though the grill was busy the food arrived quickly. My Western burger was absolutely the best I've had in a long time and was cooked to perfection. It is an older diner style restaurant that offers a variety of food options including appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, entrees, and breakfast. Breakfast is only served until 2pm, which was disappointing. The decor is definitely outdated, but it is clean and somewhat expected for a diner. They have several televisions in the dining area and bar. It was fairly busy when we arrived, but the service was fast. I ordered a shrimp salad with balsamic vinaigrette and my daughter had a side salad with balsamic. The shrimp, with a scampi like seasoning, were delicious and they definitely are not skimpy.
