We've gone to The Kitchen on Penn for almost every occasion (breakfast, lunch, dinner, date night, family gathering, and even takeout) and we have never been disappointed. The flavorful menu is a breath of fresh air in the Monroeville/Murrysville area. The open kitchen makes the cooking almost a show... especially if you can luck out to get a counter seat. The coffees are amazing. Great quality, big sizes, and always new inventive flavors. The waitresses are all so nice and most have been there for quite some time. They just take care of you. This was a disappointing restaurant experience. We really enjoy The Kitchen on Main in Ligonier. Hard to believe these two restaurants are related. Clearly the manager in Murrysville has no fine dining experience. Every table pays the same price and should have the same experience. The unfortunate ones, like us, who were seated at the rear of the restaurant might as well have been eating in a storage closet. The coffee was good. The crabby benedict was very good. The potatoes were loaded with salty seasoning, too much. The service was average. Suggest the manager clean all the crap off the counter so patrons can sit there and enjoy a meal watching the chefs in action, just like they do in Ligonier. If the chefs don't want eyes on them then clean the counter anyway and remove the chairs so you aren't pretending to be like Ligonier. Suggest you remove the tables in the back or build barriers so your patrons aren't sitting in a kitchen hallway. Also, tried to make a reservation but the online system did not work and the phone was busy. Also, we chose not to drink the water because it was served in dirty glasses that had been left on the table after the last customers left, lip down on the table surface. Ate here a few weeks ago for breakfast and it was phenomenal. Recommended it for my next dinner with friends. In between that time, they announced new ownership. I think the new ownership has some kinks to work out. We went for dinner. They don't have a liquor license yet but offered complimentary wine. Great for the wine drinkers at the table. We ordered some apps. The caprese salad had the produce sticker on a tomato. The whipped ricotta was awesome but marked as gluten free...it was served with bread. Our dinners were ok at best. Not awesome but not horrible. Our server was great! I'd give it a try again after they are up and running a bit. read more

We headed in for brunch in a Sunday. Everything was really tasty. I LOVED my breakfast sandwich with a side of potatoes. Service was attentive and efficient. (Florentina was great!). If you're looking to eat a large portion, fresh cooked, unique breakfast, this is the place for you. I've been coming here with my family for breakfast on the weekends for just over a year, and we have yet to have a bad meal. They have a great selection of coffee and tea, along with a breakfast drink menu (the orange creamsicle is amazing). Every menu item I have tried has not disappointed. Service is pretty fast, but get in early to grab a table, because they usually fill up by 9:30a. My group was all early and we were able to get a table on a very busy Sunday. The overall atmosphere was very energizing. Our server was friendly and helpful with any order changes. Nice spot that's reasonably close to Monroeville but a ways away from the city. One of the few restaurants I've ever visited in Murrysville. They focus on breakfast and lunch. I got to try out their roasted chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries for lunch. Unfortunately, it was pretty underwhelming. The chicken itself was quite good. It was seasoned well and still juicy. The bread was also solid. But, they included far too many onions, and those onions were not crispy. That blocked most of the other flavor. The arugula works well with the sauce, but does make it a bit more bitter than most chicken sandwiches. Overall, I'd probably not get it again. The sweet potato fries were equally underwhelming. Almost no seasoning on there at all. Limp and soggy. No salt to combat the sweetness. Not my style. All in all, I'd probably not be back again. There are better spots to get breakfast or lunch in the area. If I come back, I'd try something other than the chicken sandwich. read more

One of the best restaurants in Murrysville. The menu has retained some favorites, like Eggs Benedict but has added new items like a Spanish Grilled Octopus to the menu. Today I met friends for lunch. We called ahead and they had a table for 6 ready for us. They don't take reservations for lunch but will take your name if there is a wait, so call ahead an hour or so before heading over. I had the Greek Salad with a 4 oz. Grilled salmon added to it. You can choose 4 or 8 ounce addition to the salads and with Salmon, also choose the doneness. It was really delicious. It's served with two containers of dressing on the side, which is nice, because I only used one and it was enough to nicely coat my salad. My friends had the Eggs Benedict. They always order that! The restaurant is not overly decorated. Tasteful, but not too much stuff to look at. It's clean and it has an open kitchen which if you're facing it, can watch the cooking going on right in front of you. That's kind of interesting to watch! Right off of US Route 22 East, it's easy in and out and definitely is one of my favorites in the area. read more

I very much enjoyed driving out to try Kitchen On Penn with a friend for Sunday brunch! BUT MAKE A RESERVATION! I heard them telling people there was an hour+ wait with no reservation. I started with the Samoa Chai Latte and omg it was incredible. I loved their specialty coffee/tea menu. My friend and I also both got the Breakfast Bowl which was very tasty! The meats were very fresh - you can tell the difference between a diner breakfast and this, although both hit the spot! It was filling and I even had some leftover. And don't even get me started on the jam with the toast! The space is a bit crowded and there isn't much barrier between tables, but not a deal breaker. The Kitchen turned out to be a good spot for us to stop for lunch after kids hockey. The hostess wasn't the most welcoming which seems like a big fail but perhaps it was just a bad day. The poor welcome and wait experience was eventually replaced by some amazing food experiences. Everyone seemed pretty happy with their choice which included my kids. They have an awesome adult version of a grilled cheese and their salmon burger was outstanding. The breakfast bowl looked amazing as well. We've been twice now and I always forget to take pictures of the food because it looks so good we just dive right in. This is a hidden gem. Last night we had: 1. Spinach & Artichoke Dip - loved that the used Asiago cheese and serve it with warm garlic bread! 2. Burger - it was cooked & seasoned perfectly with an ample side of fries. 3. Out of towner and super grateful to find this place on my way through town. Kale ceasar salad was excellent and so was the Ahi Tuna tacos. My only preference would be less sauce/dressing on each but that that was on me for not asking as I'm usually a dressing/sauce on the side kind of eater. My husband and I came here on a Sunday around 3pm and was presented with a dinner menu. Every items listed sounded fantastic, but I went with the Bitter Sweet salad and the Blackened Tuna Tacos. The salad was phenomenal and a perfect blend of flavors, while the tuna tacos were good but nothing special. My husband started off with the Asiago dip app and then the filet mignon entree. Both dishes delicious , although we never really received the correct medium tempeture for his steak. Luckily, the server has you cut the filet open infront of her to check the temp (came out well done), so it was nice to get it taken care of right away. The second temp was still a little medium-well, but still very tasty! I had two Burnt Orange cocktails (pictured). The cocktails were made very well and I highly recommend this drink if you are looking for a simple yet flavorful taste. My husband got the chili citrus margarita, which he was not a fan of but i enjoy a kick of spice, so I indulged for him! I believe Chelsea was our waitress and I must say she was wonderful. Very personable and seemed to be pretty knowledgeable about the menu. Having been in the restaurant industry for over 15 years, it was nice to have her recognize the steak tempeture issue without us having to "complain". Appreciated her service! I have driven past the plaza where this restaurant is located time after time, and could never quite grasp what it was all about. That all changed today when I finally decided to just stop in and resolve all of my assumptions, and curiosities. Sure glad I did because it totally changed my demeanor for the day. I walked in expecting another Panera-like arrangement but ended up doing a total double take the minute I entered. I was met with a cool looking setting, upbeat music playing on a quality sound system , a fabulous menu, and an absolutely inviting dining space. The menu was another bonus. Great breakfast and lunch selections. I like the counter seating along the open kitchen area. Tables are spaciously located throughout the dining area and offer just the right amount of privacy. The Kitchen on Penn is a cute find! I went during lunch time in the middle of the week and it was really busy - that's always a good sign. The restaurant itself has a lively good vibe to it. They offer both the breakfast and lunch menus during this time. I couldn't decide which way I wanted to go so we had the Thai Chili Shrimp appetizer and Crabby Benedict for my entree. The shrimp was decent - not my favorite but the breading and sauce were good. The shrimp may have been overcooked because it was rubbery. The Crabby Benedict was amazing!!!! It came with a side of potatoes that were really good too. The portions are huge, I couldn't even finish both bennys. Our server was nice and attentive enough. I tend to forget to take photos of my food before I dive in because I'm usually so excited to have that first taste. Please take my word for it that the dishes are nicely presented. Overall, this restaurant has a nicer ambiance inside than many of the other places I have eaten at in Murrysville. The atmosphere inside is a little moody with dark colors and dim lighting. There is an open kitchen concept and you can sit at the bar and watch the chefs work (love that). The booth seating is a bit uncomfortable so maybe steer clear of that. All of the staff were very attentive and kind. I had the Tuscan Chicken and it came with a lot of oil glazing the entire dish. But you know what? It was delicious! I think in hindsight it wasn't so good to eat all of that oil, but it was the oil that sun-dried tomatoes come soaked in (olive oil), so it was flavorful and not weird like my writing is making it seem. I literally ate every bite. I chose not to have any alcoholic beverages this time but if you consume alcohol and want a good cocktail, their drinks looked really good. All hand-crafted. I will say that overall, I wasn't really a fan of the food. I visited for lunch and I did not really love anything we had. However, the drinks were definitely a redeeming quality and it's the only reason I'd return. However...I do have a few friends that say dinner was amazing for them. So maybe I'd give it another shot? Located in a shopping plaza with a popular Jimmy John's drive thru and a chain waxing salon, I was dubious about the interior of this eatery. Which led to a nice surprise upon entering to find a contemporary open kitchen warm inviting space. As Breakfast is served until 3 o'clock, it was a welcome conundrum deciding what to order with a plethora of options. Service was friendly and efficient. I recommend this spot for a cozy date night. My friend and I went there for the first time to try it. We walked in and we stood there for a good 10 to 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. There was only a few tables occupied as it was early in the evening. several of the staff looked at us, but no one tried to seat us. Finally, someone came over and acted as if we were bothering them. We waited another 10 minutes for someone to come and take our drink order. We ordered our food which took another 20 minutes. By then I had just about had it! I have been to this restaurant for brunch before, but I finally came for dinner. My party ordered the bruschetta appetizer which I would definitely recommend. I ordered the monkfish for my entree which is served with an herb sauce that is very good. The fish was cooked well, but monkfish is a denser fish so it's an interesting texture. Someone else in my party ordered the salmon burger which they enjoyed as well. I also ordered the lemon blueberry cheesecake for dessert. It was pretty heavy, and the cake was a little on the dry side. Overall I enjoyed my dinner and look forward to trying more things from their menu. read more
