Visiting from out of town a friend told me about this place and I knew I had to check it out. They only do sours so keep that in mind if you don't like sours, probably not the place for you. However if you love sours, like I do, I was in heaven. So many unique flavors to try and everyone was very friendly. It isn't a huge tap room but a good size with a big window into their brewery which is always fun. The unique thing about their tap room is that you can buy a glass then you get 4 pours for the glass. I think this is the only way to buy a beer but I could be wrong. It's a cool concept because then you get a souvenir but I also you have to carry that glass around and when you are brewery hopping it's hard to keep track of. I love sour beers, and I've never been to a brewery completely dedicated to them! I enjoyed every one that I tried. As others have mentioned, there's a specialized system where you decide what size of glass that you want to buy, and the price for that glass comes with 4 pours of that size. Overall - very affordable! I picked a 12 oz glass and I think it was about $17 dollars. I was in from out of town, with some fellow visitors and some locals. It was a nice night and we enjoyed sitting outside and chatting while we worked through our pours. The ambiance of the outdoor space is lovely, and the service was prompt. Visited Blue Owl Brewing on Sunday evening. Extremely different and very bold beers, but even as someone who loves sours, difficult to get into. Quality: I visit breweries relatively frequently, and I can confidently say Blue Owl Brewing is doing some very interesting things. From the way you order to the explosion of sour, nothing is familiar. We went with the Half Pint Glass and tried four beers, Little Gose, Van Dayum, Hop Totem, and Professor Black. I also got a sip of Cool & The Gang and Admiral Gravitas. And while you expect a gose to be sour, the red ale, IPA, cherry stout, and imperial oatmeal stout are not things you expect to pucker your lips. Does it work? I don't really think so. The standard sours were good, but the other styles are just overpowered and lose their charm. I give credit for going bold, but I think the experiment went too far. Quantity: Guests choose an 16oz, 12oz, 8oz, or 5oz glass, which then comes with four pours. Value: $12 for the Half Pint Glass with four 8oz pours. Ambiance: Blue Owl Brewing is located east of Downtown Austin. The brewery is in a good sized warehouse, but the taproom is relatively small. Most of the space is taken up by equipment. Out front they have a skinny patio area running adjacent to the street. Inside they have a bar at the center and then a few tables with high tops surrounding it. The decor is very cozy and homey. In the background indie hip-hop played along, which felt like a good choice. I will say the collection of games they had to occupy visitors, much like the beers, strays from the norm. With around twenty games, I had never heard of any of them before. Crowd: A few other people, but most did not stay very long. It is a very niche style of beer, and it is not really for many casual beer drinkers. Service: The ordering method is strange, which I am sure is annoying to the staff. I am a huge fan of sour beer so it's no surprise that I love this place! I think this is a good place to start too if you're not that big into beer. The sourness of the beer helps combat the heaviness some people don't like about beer. They have sour Stout, IPA, Pale Ale, Wheat, etc. Not to mention their glassware is so dope. You can get four 12oz pours and keep the glassware for $16, which is not bad at all. I love sour beers, so I was super stoked to find out that this place specialized sour beers. Environment was very chill and the servers were friendly and informative, albeit swamped at times. I imagine that this place can and does get super crowded at times, but it was manageably crowded when my friend and I had gone. They offer flights, as most breweries do, so my friend and I opted to do that. The Professor Black sour cherry stout was particularly tasty in my opinion. They have a couple of dogs at this brewery, so you may find a friendly snout poking into your lap. I loved their branding and logo, so I got a couple of pieces of merchandise to go also. This is Austin, though, so remember to bring a reusable bag with you in order to bring home your wares as they do not provide you with bags. read more

Spent a whole evening here due to the unusual policy of requiring you to purchase a glass that comes with 4 pours. We drank our 4 14 oz pours over the course of a few hours, but it's nice that we had the option to bail earlier and take home a can instead. The patio is nicely set up with distanced tables, fans, and hand sanitizers at every table. We brought over food from Vegan Nom, a couple minutes walk away. My partner and I each tried 4 different beers. All were delicious! This was our first visit to the brewery despite buying the beer from stores many times. I would definitely come back but with the awareness of the policy that you have to buy at least 4 12oz pours (you can split amongst multiple people though). I think the real highlight of visiting the brewery are the frozen beer drinks. They had a "Mexican Marteeny" available the night we went, which is based on the Teenybopper ale with some other things mixed in. Amazing, and a great final glass! So when I heard about Blue Owl opening last year, my expectations, hopes, and dreams, for easy to access, canned sour beer were so high. It was unfair to them how high my expectations were, and still, these guys exceeded them!! Seriously...here's why: 1) Most importantly, excellent beer. Little Boss is probably my go to, easy to drink, hot summer day session beer. It is refreshing and tart and beautiful. I love Van Dayum and Professor Black as well. Lastly, Spirit Animal is pretty good, but still weird to me the hoppy/sour clash. That being said, I will check out the Hop Totem IPA when it drops, because I am curious about everything they make. 2) Completely Unique - These guys are the only all sour-mash brewery in town, and one of the first/only I've ever heard of? They take any style you want and then sour it. They destroy Illinois' Destihl which does similar stuff (to me their beers have no subtlety, and remind of me drinking a warhead candy). I have never had a beer in the same ballpark as the Professor Black Cherry Stout. Sour, Cherry, Chocolatey awesome. Try it immediately if you haven't had it. To be honest, I did not love it at first, but now it is my overall fav of theirs. It drinks so easily, even though this is a rich, full flavored stout. The sour does some kinda jedi mind tricks on you...full body, very sour, easy to drink?! 3) Super cool taproom - the place is just a beautiful space, that is fun and comfortable to hang out in. I love the design inside, and on the out door patio. 4) Homebrew Class! Even though their business immediately took off and they are just trying to figure out how to keep up with demand, the head brewer Davey teaches a homebrew class. And on top of providing great print/pdf resources, he gave us his e-mail and quickly responded to a couple of questions I had. Super nice dude, who helped me learn how to brew sour beers at home! Well, my first attempt seriously smelled like Parmesan mixed with stinky feet, but I will not give up hope lol! I came here with friends recently and none of us were fans of any of the 5 beers we tried. The staff was pretty nice, but I've never felt more sold to at a brewery before out of the dozens I've been to. I've also never been to a brewery where they charge you for the tour which you can only go on if you've already purchased their $15 glass to try their beers with. I mean hey, we all need to make a living, but I don't know too many people who enjoy being sold to. A little more subtly might go a long way. However, if you have a thing for sour beers and don't mind the upsell, you may like this place. It is nice, clean, and open space. read more

I'm not usually easily impressed by sours. In fact, I don't even like them. I also severely dislike the fact that every brewery here makes you buy their glass, and as a traveler that sucks because I don't want to bring glass back, but I also don't want to leave it somewhere. What a dilemma! However, I really enjoyed my visit to Blue Owl and actually love the design of their glass (despite the fact that you technically get much less than a pint unlike many other brewers ...) I really liked Little Boss as a sour and Spirit Animal was also pretty fantastic. The staff is incredibly friendly, there's a little outdoor area where you can hang out on a nice day, and the entire interior is filled with blue. And owls of course! This review covers the $20 "Behind the Tanks" brewery tour that includes a tour, a branded 12oz glass, and four pours of their sour-mash beer. The tasting alone costs $15. Be warned, these are not small servings of beer, they are full glasses. And if you go on the tour, the staff will likely bring out pitchers of beer to taste that do not count towards your tasting count. So you'll probably end up getting a least twice as much beer than advertised (huzzah!). The tour is a little different than the typical because the staff loves going into the details of their custom-designed brewing equipment. Maybe I'm somewhat biased as an engineer, but I was fascinated by the intricacy of their system. Be sure to speak up if you have any questions, they're more than happy to answer. My ABSOLUTE favorite brewery I visited in all of ATX. I was in pure bliss during my time here. They specialize in sour smashing and most of their beers on tap fall in the sour category. The brewery is very quaint and seating is limited, but it is so worth it to come here. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and had the best time. The beertender was one of the coolest people we met while visiting ATX and she was incredibly friendly and super passionate and knowledgeable about the beer. They serve all of their beers where you purchase the glass and get 4 pours depending on the size of glass you purchase. They have all of their flagship beers available on tap, but they also have seasonal and rotating options as well. I absolutely adored the Strawberry Fields Forever. It was freaking amazing! The interior may be small, but it is artfully and beautifully designed. It is so bright and airy and I love the small details and care they have put into the brewery. Blue Owl is a nice place to stop into, provided you like their particular brand of Belgian-lite. It's basically all sour beers fermented in a style to make them more accessible (read: less sour) to non sour-heads, with a more controlled fermentation process so that they throw out less beer and don't in turn have to charge $13 for a 750ml bottle like Jester King. What you get here is a specialty glass with four pours (about 10oz apiece) for $15. It's reasonable, although other places nearby (e.g. Hops and Grain) give you more for less. The space has charm to spare, with a small patio and colorful tasting room full of wooden fermentation barrels. If our bartender, Margot, was representative, they hire the most adorably cute people in existence. Seriously, she was, to go all 1990's on you, the bomb. So, we did three standards and one seasonal: the Spirit Animal (American pale), Little Boss (session wheat), Professor Black (cherry stout), and Czech Czech (pils). Everything was enjoyable, the Little Boss is a nice session beer, and the Professor Black helped me forget about Deep Ellum's lame cherry stout, but nothing was quite life-changing. But we had a good time and we'll happily return. read more

So you will have to take my 2 cents here as I am not a sour fan, and that is what this place is. So I tried to be nice on my review due to this. I really enjoyed the beer I had, but again, not a huge fan of sours (my favorite was the sour pale ale since it was the closest thing to a non-sour beer). The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of is how they sell you their pours. Instead of you going in and buying a pint, you have to buy a sampler glass. With that, depending on the size you decide to purchase, you get 4 samples of beer. Which is nice in a way because I honestly didn't know what I wanted being that all of them were sours and I wanted to try them all, but if I wanted to pick a specific beer, I really couldn't just get a pint. Well then this hidden gem is for you My wife and I stopped by on a DIY Austin brewery tour, and this was our favorite spot. They make several kinds of beer, but every beer is mixed with a sour mash. So they have saisons, kolshes, stouts, etc., but each one has a funky sour element to it. I am not a stout person, but I LOVED their stout. The tasting is also a fun experience.
