We ordered an almond croissant with crème fraîche and marmalade and a cappuccino. We waited for a longer amount of time than normal, and when we went to ask about it, it turns out the cashier didn't communicate our order to the the person preparing it. So we finally get our coffee first. Then a few minutes later our toasted croissant arrives, but they didn't bring the crème fraîche or the marmalade. They had to go back and get it, but only brought back the marmalade...... Cappuccino was robust with a hint of sour, if you like that. The almond croissant had good ratio of marzipan to pastry. Cool space that I would love to have here in SoCal, with a great vibe and tasty product. Vietnamese coffee (Cafe Sua Da) is not usually my thing (too much milk+sugar) but if I were to have it anywhere in the world, it would be here. Somehow, even with the condensed milk and unhealthy crap added, this version still manages to have a compelling coffee taste. Drip coffee and iced cold brew here are also highly competent. I've only visited a few Houston coffee shops, but I would rate Blacksmith as joint-top with Greenway Coffee, and superior to Siphon and Boomtown coffee. The biscuit is probably the most interesting food item here, highly recommended. While I also enjoyed the steak and eggs, I would rate it as above-average and a bit pricey. read more

I've been here several times now since their soft opening. I'm a big fan of all of the owners' other restaurants and bars, Blacksmith is no exception. The first thing I noticed was the interior is similar to that Anvil/Haymerchant style, but far less noisy. The coffee is Greenway (the beans I brew at home) which means it's really good and strong, but a little pricey compared to other Montrose coffee spots. The food is really good, but the yogurt and granola could use a little more granola. I'm excited to watch Blacksmith grow into itself and I can't wait to see what events this place will have. I went here for lunch with friends, and it was really enjoyable. The atmosphere is probably the best thing about the restaurant. The tinted glass windows give the space a good lighting that isn't too harsh, and it's well air-conditioned. I got the Almond Croissant and the Croissant with Benton's Bacon, Egg, & Cheddar. The almond croissant was not that great. It was really dry, and I couldn't really taste the almonds. The savory croissant was better. The egg is cooked perfectly and looks really nice. The sandwich as a whole would be good for breakfast, but for lunch it wasn't filling at all. It was also really oily because of the bacon. One of my friends got the Yogurt & Toasted Granola. She liked it. Another friend got the Benton's Ham & Brie Sammy. She said it was just an overpriced grilled cheese sandwich. The food isn't bad, but it's a little expensive for the quality. Is it possible to love coffee so much you want to marry the barista? That's how I feel about Blacksmith. I always feel out of place because I'm definitely not the hipster type, and Blacksmith is definitely a young urban hipster hangout, thanks to its vicinity to Montrose and University of St. Thomas. But the coffee and the food keeps me coming back over and over again. The coffee drinks are always lovingly prepared by someone who was probably over trained for the job, and who spends as much time crafting shapes in the foam as they do pulling the espresso shots. But that kind of craftsmanship makes for the best coffee I've had in this town. It almost makes up for the fact that they scraped off the old Mary's mural when they built the place. Ahh well. Wasn't sure if I wanted to use the outdoor seating to bask in all of Houston's humid glory, but luckily a table opened up inside right as our drinks were ready. It was super crowded with the line out the door and elbow to elbow inside so, I had a friend order me a BLT and coffee then went outside to save us a table. I only got a glimpse of the menu so, I didn't know the BLT was made with pickled green tomatoes and mesculin greens. If I had I would have ordered something else. This is not a BLT for me. Talk about a small coffee shop! I didn't realize it was so small until I walked inside. Definitely has that industrial hipster feel to it. There's also patio seating for when the weather's nice. There are 3 parking lots that they share with Hay Merchant and Underbelly. Also, signage is not that visible in case it's your first time and you don't know where it is. It's right after the Burger King coming from Montrose at the light. I came here for the Vietnamese steak and eggs. Like other reviewers have commented, it's different from the typical entree at Asian establishments. It was okay but I was pretty disappointed (maybe it was the hype). We also tried the pate so sammy - which is a twist from the original pate chaud. This was a better rendition than the steak and eggs but still a let down. For drinks, we got a chai latte and cafe sua da. They were low on chai so the barista gave us a card for a free drink. Their customer service is on point with friendly faces. So, I returned to Blacksmith for round 3 except this time I also tried out the food. I got the cheddar and egg croissant and substituted the bacon for avocado (bonus points to Blacksmith for suggesting this!). I also grabbed a iced vanilla latte because it was a hot summer day and I refuse to join the gang of weirdos who drink hot coffee on steamingly hot days (looking at my uncle). Quickly realized that Blacksmith's food is just as excellent as their HOT coffees. The vanilla latte was pretty much comparable to one I'd get at Dunkin Donuts (i.e. crappy, sorry DD). I was a little disappointed that this place wasn't all-around fabulous but everyone has their faults. It's okay, Blacksmith, I'm going to let this go because I'm not a fan of cold coffee anyway. Blacksmith is one of my favorite shops in Houston. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their offerings. The coffee is roasted very well and the baristas do a great job making it shine on its own or with milk. Good hipster coffee/tea place! I rolled in here around 3:30 the other day for a work from coffee shop day. I had some pretty tasty white tea, and there was a good bit of available seating.. There aren't alot of tables, but there is more than enough bar seating to fit enough people in.. The service was solid. The internet kept flaking in and out for my mbp. Not sure if it was my seat or what.. but that was a bummer.. As Jason M points out, they are a day place: 7a-5p. I ended up staying till 5:30 before I left on my own accord.. They didn't kick anyone out since they were still busy closing shop.. Its a bummer they aren't open late, but they are on the bar-y side of town (and share a parking lot with 3 restaurants and bars), so parking is rough at 5p anyways! Its totally reasonable to walk across the street and exchange your coffee for an IPA.. lol Its a good place to hang out.. And I hear good things about the food.. This place is a little more pricey than you average coffee, but it's also not a chain. The staff is super friendly, they each stopped and smiled while saying hello is i entered. Customer service is a huge thing to me and they rock. My coffee, though simple, was out in literally 1-2 minutes from transaction. And it was excellent. Definitely recommended. I was in Houston briefly to attend a show, and my accommodation was in the Montrose area, so after checking out of my AirBnB I hopped on Yelp to find a coffee shop / breakfast spot to fill the few hours before my flight home. Blacksmith was quite close to me, and Vietnamese steak and eggs sounded quite enticing, so I gave it a try. I wasn't disappointed. The Vietnamese steak and eggs was delicious. First of all, it smelled so good! And looked even better. Definitely pretty photogenic. The steak was tasty and tender, and the juices that pool up at the bottom of the pan were packed with flavor. I don't know if it was the right away to eat it, but I shoved a bunch of the steak and cut up eggs into the bread that came with the meal, along with some of that white sauce and the salad, and it tasted great that way haha. Anyways, the food was A+. It also came out quickly. I had an espresso as well, and it was quite good. Not the best I've ever had but still solid, and definitely got the job done. It's not the cheapest spot ever. My bill came out to just over $19. But I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and the atmosphere too; it's quite a hip spot. It wasn't too crowded (Still had to stand in line to order though). There was ample seating inside and outside the cafe, although the tables inside may be a bit too close to one another. I ordered a flat white for myself and anticipated trying the croissant with chicken salad, but a las, they were already sold out (it was 12pm- holy cow). I ordered the Vietnamese Steak and eggs instead. Wait time for the food wasn't very long- especially for the number of people dining that day. My flat white was very smooth and had a good flavor. The microfoam- had a very cream-like and velvety texture. Definitely one of the better flat whites that I have had here in Houston. The steak and eggs arrived on a wooden platter. There was warm bread, pate and mayo, greens, and the skillet of eggs, onions, and fried eggs to top it off. Bread was warm but a bit on the stale side - I could fix that easily by mopping up the sauce from the meat. Greens were a very nice, refreshing touch to the otherwise very heavy items on the platter. Pate/Mayo- It looked/tasted like regular mayo, usually, traditional steak and eggs has a more "yellow" colored mayo that has a lot more flavor. The pate was pretty good though. I'd pass on the mayo. Steak & Eggs skillet - eggs, cooked perfectly. Meat, also tender, but a tad bit salty. Craving their food pretty badly as I am writing this review. (That should tell ya something.) DRINKS (4/5): I definitely recommend the flat white and caramel latte. If you like chocolate, try the Valrhona latte. Bonus points because they use coffee from Greenway Coffee! I've never had a badly poured cup here. As for tea, the golden monkey is your typical black tea. They'll give you extra cups to share with other people if you ask. A pretty cheap option--1 pot is about 4 small cups. I would skip the ca phe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee) if you're a spoiled ca phe sua da snob like me, who's had it homemade since childhood, because it's just made with regular espresso + condensed milk + evaporated milk (aka not made with a phin filter + Viet coffee + only condensed milk). But if you must have it, it's not bad. Cappuccino has latte art though? Maybe I'm under the wrong impression, but I thought cappuccino foam bubbles are too big for that. Oh well. FOOD (4.5/5): Stings my wallet a bit, but the food is good!! I love their take on Vietnamese street food, like with the Pate So Sammy. I used to eat the real deal in Vietnam as a kid, and Blacksmith's version with the added (lightly flavored) fish sauce slaw and sunny-side up egg (!!!) takes the dish to another level. I hear a lot of good things about the steak + eggs, but I'm iffy on spending $15 on something my mom can make. The ham & brie sammy may look simple but trust me, you will wish you had 2 or 3 of them after you take the first bite. They don't skimp on the brie. Also love the seared pineapple bits and honey mustard inside that makes the sammy more complex in flavor. The bread is perfectly butter-browned on both sides. Do yourself a favor and order this. Ah yes, and the biscuits are great (both the marmalade and sausage/egg/cheese ones) but everyone else has already raved about them. AMBIANCE/SERVICE (4/5): Seating is plenty and varied: high tables, coffee bar, window bar, regular tables, and outside patio. You won't have trouble finding a seat unless you go during peak hours (mid morning to lunch). However outlets are only under the window/bar seats so plan accordingly. Service, both at the bar and in the kitchen, is quick and friendly. Befriend a barista or two if you can! They also play good music so of course that's a plus. There's also outside seating for the nice days! A little too dark for my studying tastes but it could work, depending on your style. Disclaimer: I've tried and tried Asian teas at non-Asian establishments and it's always been varying levels of disappointment, so I wasn't surprised when the black tea was watery. The presentation was perfect with their foam designs. I order the Kentucky hot brown sandwich. It arrived open faced in a small Dutch serving dish l. This sandwich was so rich and tasty. It reminded me of a chicken Alfredo sandwich with Texas toast and not fettuccine pasta, with two slices of tomatoes and a slice of bacon. My sister ordered the Vietnamese steak and eggs, it comes with a baguette which is so fluffy and soft. It comes with a side of patè to spread on your bread. The meat was very tender and sweet. A nice little brunch spot near the corner of Montrose and Westheimer. I've gone a couple of times few brunch items and coffee selections all decent, but space is small. Iv'e gotten the scratch square biscuits with egg and sausage and the yogurt toasted granola before. The biscuits seem a it dry depending on the time of day, and the eggs and sausage are a bit generic, the yogurt and granola however are quite fair, sweet and crunchy with a tad bit of honey flavoring and tanginess of the sweet dried fruit. It'll get compact with the tiny space but on a nice sunny day it's a real cozy restaurant. If its busy the line usually reaches outside the door, and parking can be sort of hard in the area. read more

But if you drink tea, you know how hard it is to get a decent cuppa at a restaurant that's not lukewarm water with box-tea garbage shoved in its top-hole. Basically Blacksmith is one of the few places that doesn't treat tea like an afterthought or leave it to oversteep in some godawful French press (I'm looking at you, Siphon). The Vietnamese steak is too sweet. The biscuit sandwich just doesn't quite add up to the sum of its parts. I started my order off by ordering the Coconut Almond Chai, which is chai with coconut water and almond milk. I'm not much of a chai drinker because I find it overly spiced. I recommend as a little side or snack. My main course was the Vietnamese Steak and Eggs! It was delicious, and I'd easily order it again. Bad attitudes. Bad service. This was our first time going to this place and will definitely be our last.

It's a good place to hang out and have a cup of coffee. The ambiance is cool and the people who work here are nice (even most people who enter). However, I don't believe it's the kind of place I'd be rushing back to tomorrow. The food was decent and the menu was pretty small. The place was a little crammed but, I do love the industrial look and feel to 'The Blacksmith'. The decor fits perfectly with the name. I also LOVED my mocha latte, delish!!! Another plus is that it is about 1:30 p.m. and although there are quite a few people here, it's not overcrowded with chatter. You can really just sit back and relax for an hour or two. read more

I only consumed one item off the menu during my visit, and it was the biscuit with country ham and gravy. I started eating it and OMG I thought I was struck my lightning. Perhaps it was since I didn't eat breakfast yet that day, but I thought the meal had the perfect amount of flavor and richness. $7 for a biscuit, egg, gravy, and some ham may be a little pricy, but I would totally order it again. It's a perfect comfort food- and you can't put a price on comfort during times when you need a pick me up. (Okay you can put a price on it, but I think $7 isn't too bad) Minus one star though because parking sucks, and it's a bit crowded in the shop. read more
