I agree with the other reviews when they say "CLOSE AT 5PM?" This place is too awesome to be closing so early. Not much of a coffee drinker so I'm glad this place carried an alternative.. KOMBUCHA! It's an all natural with raw ingredients. Contains almost every berry out there. The best thing about it is that its Houston made. From the lunch menu, I ordered the BACON, gouda, green tomato sandwich that came with crunchy chips. The best way I can describe the burger bun is its similar to the brown bread you get from Cheesecake factory. This meal is a must have. Everything you've heard is true, the bad and the good. The Bad: Expensive: Single-item breakfast for 3 adults and a toddler amounted to about $40! That's without any of us getting the Vietnamese steak and eggs ($14?!) we all wanted to try. Cramped: It's a restaurant in denial. Face it, Blacksmith, you cannot fit into that coffee house dress anymore. You're expanding. Please try on a larger facility. The Good: Food & Drink: The stuff that matters most was very well done. My croissant had sweet, crispy bacon and the perfect fried egg. There was just enough yolk to glaze my sandwich without smearing everywhere. DH's red-eye gravy item was on point. And the chai; for $4, I've gotten much worse. Theirs struck the delicate balance between sweet and creamy so as not to be overwhelming in either direction. Really neat coffee shop! Very small and seating is limited. Additional seating outside with a cool view of the busy streets of Westheimer. When I originally walked in I was a little confused; there is no waitress and I didn't see menus anywhere. Seating is first come, first serve and the menu is displayed on a wall above the bar seating. The vibe is similar to Starbucks - ppl on their laptops, reading, etc... Great selection of coffee and pretty tasty food. I ordered Vietnamese steak & eggs, was pleased however, not the most amazing breakfast I've tasted. LOVE this cafe: they've got it all--nice ambiance, great coffee and tea selections, and absolutely AMAZING biscuits. I haven't gotten to trying their other offerings but I'm sure they're quite good as well. This place is great for catching up with friends as well as studying--while there isn't too much space inside, there is also outdoor seating, not to mention plenty of parking. The service was just as on par as their food--we accidentally stayed a bit past 5, but they let us! And around that time we saw someone go in and still get to place an order. Back to the biscuits--I didn't expect too much of a biscuit, but Blacksmith really nailed it. Warm and golden brown, the crust was crisp but the middle stayed soft. Paired with a tangy marmalade and cream, it was perfection, minus a warm beverage (we chose a non-caffeinated tea to complete the pairing). My friend got a savory sausage, egg and cheddar biscuit, which had a perfect sunny side-up egg and perfectly melted cheese. Blacksmith has made it into multiple versions of America's Best Coffee Shop lists for a reason: they pour skill and care into every cup, and they have thoughtfully curated a menu of well-crafted noshes. The coffee service is wonderful here. Lattes and cappuccinos are consistently well-made and topped with silky, elegant foam flourishes. The people who work here are also friendlier than the average Montrose coffee shop employee. The iced coffee lassi is a unique drink. It is a cold-brewed coffee milk cultured into a thin yogurt. The combination of coffee and yogurt sounded repugnant at first, but I had been curious since reading about it in the New York Times. The tanginess of the yogurt surprisingly does not clash with the bold, rich coffee taste. After a few sips, the smooth, luxurious creaminess takes over, and any doubts over paying $6 for a coffee beverage quickly dissipate. The biscuits with crème fraîche and marmalade are unbelievably decadent, but are light enough to be immune from post-carb-load regret. A single biscuit makes for a satisfying lunch. The rustic biscuit is flaky and buttery, and the crème fraîche and marmalade add a touch of sweetness and moisture that perfectly complements the savory biscuit. This is a chill place to study, but sit next to the window if you need light, and bring headphones if loud ambient noise distracts you. Also, be aware of its early closing time. Except during peak brunch times, there is usually plenty of available of inside bar and table seating along with multiple tables outside on the shaded patio. What is that concept? Well for Blacksmith's it's obviously good coffee, solid knowledgable baristas, a good vibe, and welcoming hot foods. There are not a lot of coffee choices, which was coffee shops used to be like. However, the option for a vanilla or caramel coffee is still available. First, the pros: -No issues parking, at least at ~11AM on a Friday. -Rapid and friendly counter service, and food arrived quickly. -Their regular coffee was solid, a good 4/5. And then, the neutral: -The environment was standard, unoriginal (oh, the irony) hipster coffee bar. Nothing special, but I also wouldn't mind passing a couple of hours there reading or working on a laptop. And the finally, the cons: -Poorly stocked coffee bar. No spoons or other stirrers, and they were too busy to easily wrangle an employee to restock it. -The BLT sandwich was, in a word, embarrassing. It was essentially a mesculin greens sandwich with bacon garnish. Something was off with the taste of the pickled green tomatoes, and there was a slab of mystery cheese vs meat adherent to the upper bun that wasn't listed on the menu description. The only redeeming feature was the molasses wheat bun, which almost made the second half of the sandwich palatable after I stripped it of the green tomatoes and 3/4 of the greens. In summary, this is a standard hipster coffee bar (4/5) playing poorly at the breakfast/brunch game (1/5). I had the dill scramble and a chai latte. The chai latte was pretty delicious, but on the lukewarm side. The spices in it were nice and balanced...nothing funky going on. My friend enjoyed the Valrhona mocha...it was not too sweet, and had a lot of caffeine. The dill scramble was just what I was craving. It's packed with dill flavor, so if you're not a fan then order something else. It's a slice of pumpernickel bread with dill spread, thinly sliced smoked salmon, topped with scrambled eggs and a little onion. It seemed well thought out and again, balanced flavors. Yum! A cozy little place, I had come with my husband to meet a friend at around 10 am on a Sunday. There is parking but it's shared; there are two lots so if one is full, make a round to the other side that connects to the entrance to Blacksmith. There was a line inside and we ended up waiting for about 10 minutes before we got to the counter. The menu is posted on the wall by the door so you can begin planning what to order from the beginning. They also offer pastries like croissants and donuts at the front. Hubby and I are vegetarian but we don't eat onion and garlic so we stuck with something simple. We ended up getting an almond croissant and black coffee for him and a biscuit with spicy marmalade and crème fraîche, polenta (reportedly vegan), and a cup of orange juice for me. You'll get a number if you're ordering and you also get the silverware then and you seat yourself. There is a water dispenser inside complete with metal cups. He thought the croissant was a bit dry and felt cheated because there was barely any almond filling, if that was even the filling. Coffee is coffee. I enjoyed my biscuit (nice and buttery) and the marmalade and crème fraîche were the perfect complements. The polenta was nice and soft and came with a dollop of some mildly spicy red pepper sauce and a cilantro leaf garnish. I don't think it was safe even though the cashier said it was just "red peppers and almonds". I just scooped it off and ate the rest. My omnivore friend got a BLT which he enjoyed. The place was pretty packed already so it took a bit of time to find a table; my friend was recovering from leg surgery so a table was preferable. We ended up getting one outside, which was fine as the weather wasn't too hot yet. The patio seating wasn't the most comfortable but our food cane out maybe 10 minutes later. The BLT came out an additional 10 minutes after. I noticed the table behind us took a long while to get their food. We were there to catch up and weren't on a time crunch so this wasn't too big of an issue. There was a door by the door with a photo that contained a toilet on it. I assume that would be where the bathrooms are located. All in all, a nice place with decent fare. Pastries are just okay. Service is good enough; they'll clear the tables after you. Half of the patrons were there with friends and the other half were there for work/study. Parking may not be too easy and that may be reflected when you're trying to find a seat. Finally, a top notch coffee shop in Montrose that does it right! STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICES. You are paying for quality, everything is so fresh and delicious I think that's worth an extra buck or two, in my opinion. The toasted granola yogurt parfait is the bees knees. The yogurt is creamy, not sweetened, just the way I like it. Its almost refreshing, it taste like fresh cream. Topped with the granola, which is also just a hint of sweetness and the giant fresh blueberries, it comes out perfectly balanced. The scratch made biscuit with creme fraiche and marmalade are also impressive. The right amount of buttery biscuit and tart marmalade. It always hit the spot. And of course the coffee, very amazing selection that changes daily. The baristas are knowledgeable and friendly, as opposed to some other coffee shops where they can be quite pretentious. These guys rock. The americano is PERFECT. It rivals my favorite espresso I can only get in Seattle. And the lattes are quite good as well. So are the regular brews which you can get in a fresh pour. I love it. They do tastings from different roasters I think on Wednesdays, that's something unique and fun for any coffee enthusiasts, and it's something nobody else is doing. If i'm feeling a bit more broody and pensive, I will come here over Siphon. This coffeeshop is much smaller, and feels smaller (I think because of the low ceilings) when you initially walk in; natural light comes directly in as it faces the street. There is a parking lot for you in the back, and if there's no parking, you can also park at their sister restaurants' parking lot behind underbelly and hay merchant. If you're looking for a quiet visit, I would not recommend coming on the weekend. Afternoon weekdays are a bit emptier and you can have your pick at where you'd like to sit (high tables/counter/regular tables). The coffee and lattes are great; this is probably the first place I've ever had biscuits with my coffee (what is the South), but I will say those biscuits are GOOD. with a little creme fraiche and some jam, it's pretty on point. I might go so far as to say it's the best biscuits I've had in Houston. If you're a bit hungrier, they also have a small menu that features local and fresh ingredients - the breakfast menu is supposed to be relatively spread, but I will try that next. The service is great - they're always ready to cater to what you want and need. If you become a regular, they'll start to remember you and your order as well. 350+ reviews but here are my 2 cents! Blacksmith is truly one of the best coffee cafes I've been to. It offers great service, delicious snacks, laid back atmosphere, and even accommodating parking (which is a RARE find for coffee shops in Houston)! Their creme fraiche biscuit is a MUST! The interior isn't big... it can actually be quite crowded on a busy day. This is one of the biggest downsides, especially for students. However, there are some seating outside that are perfect for a sunny day. Speaking with the servers is a pleasant experience, especially since these people are actually eager to help you with your coffee/snack selection. Totes respect. I have caved in and decided to go back to Blacksmith. I had previously been here shortly they opened, but I was very disappointed with their coffee. The Cortado, Valrhona Mocha and Sorghum Latte were all cold. My coffee routine consists of grabbing my coffee to-go in the mornings and taking a sip about 2 min later to allow the coffee to cool a bit so I don't burn my tongue; but each time I had stopped, my coffee was cold. I am talking by the time I circled to block to Montrose and crossed the light at Westheimer on my way to the Med Center, it was cold! So needless to say I never returned. I will say that the biscuits with the Creme Fraiche and Marmalade are a thing of genius (you really have to eat it there or it gets cold and can get hard around the edges). I still have yet to try the Vietnamese Steak and Eggs (dying to), but they had previously told me that it could not be packed up to-go. Skip about 8 mos to yesterday. After reading so many positive things about the place, I decided to hop in and give it another shot. This time I ordered their Cold Brew with touch of cream & asked for it to be sweetened with vanilla/caramel, and it was DA BOMB!!!!! I love my coffee, especially my iced one, to be STRONG and sweetened, but I don't want the sweetness to kill the flavor and strength of my coffee. They hit this one out of the park! I stand corrected on Siphon being my favorite coffee shop in Houston...Blacksmith has swooped in and taken the title. I'm not sure if it's the perfect creamy flat white that swung me or the unbelievable buttery biscuits that I now crave on a daily basis. Regardless, I've been back 4 or 5 times since my first trip last month. This really is a great place to go for a bite and some caffeine. The espresso is smooth and nice, making the coffee drinks some of the best in Houston. The menu and the atmosphere remind me of some coffee shops I went to in Melbourne, which makes it even better. Since the word is out about how awesome it is, it's probably not the most low-key, quiet place to go (at least not in the mornings), but I do see people studying there. For a relaxing morning and a chat with a friend/significant other, it's perfect. It's an active effort to stop myself from coming here every single morning that I'm not working. I LOVE this place! This is the first coffee house I visit in Houston, so I am not sure how it compares to the others ones in the city. I have been to a lot of other coffee shops in different cities but I really liked this one. It has a great ambience. People are always coming and going so the crowd is changing all the time. I had their vegan chocolate chip cookies and their caramel latte. The caramel latte was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to go back again sometime to drink it again! The service was phenomenal and overall great experience. They have water right by the entrance, free wifi, and outlets under the counter for anyone wanting to do work. If you want to work here, just know it will be a little loud, so not ideal for video calls haha but you can definitely get work done. Blacksmith is a nice place to go to for a quick bite and coffee during the morning or afternoon. However, it closes at 5 pm, so don't think of Blacksmith as a good nighttime spot. They have a free private parking lot which is a huge plus for the Montrose area. They also have outdoor patios if it gets too stuffy inside. They serve breakfast and lunch as well. We ordered the Latté ($4.00) and the Vietnamese Steak and Eggs ($15.00) on a Saturday afternoon. The place was packed, but we were able to find seating at the bar beside the cashier. The steak and eggs were good, but they really need to chill on the salt. The meal was served with a bun and small side salad, but I found it a bit overpriced at $15, especially since the meat was much too salty. We enjoyed the latté, it was creamy and they even did some latté art on it. Overall, Blacksmith is a nice little coffee shop. Definitely felt out of my depth here. Brought in by someone who doesn't drink Starbucks on principle so I knew it was going to be high quality. I ordered an Americano and immediately noticed a difference from any Americano I've had before. My friend had raved about the quality and texture (yes texture) of the espresso based drinks here so I knew I had to try one. The coffee was definitely more "velvety" than other espressos and had a strong citrus/acidic bite to it. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about coffee, but I do know what I like and it wasn't that. Maybe that's just what good coffee tastes like. I prefer a darker "diner style" coffee but that's just me. It's surprisingly small inside and most of the tables were occupied on a Tuesday afternoon. Some tables outside but you're basically sitting in the middle of Westheimer. Brick and metal interior. Hipster/trendy atmosphere inside. On the loud side. Baristas were knowledgable and friendly. We didn't try any of the food but I've heard great things. I've also had their croissant with creme fraiche and marmalade. The croissant is average, but the creme fraiche and marmalade made it special. The line can get long, so I usually go there early to avoid that. It's also a bit cramped inside, so you might have to wait for seats to free up. Another great breakfast find on our quarterly visit to Houston. First thing I noticed as I was standing in line was the small kitchen. Incredible and well thought out menu for such a small work space. My only gripe was even though they said they would accommodate my request of soft bacon...crispy bacon made it to the table. Toast in a skillet topped with a slice of turkey and then smothered in Mornay. Garnished with tomato slices and unfortunately the overcooked bacon mentioned above. The Vietnamese steak and eggs was another stellar pairing. Well seasoned beef adorned with two sunny side up eggs. Toasted bread provided to mop of the goodness in the skillet. The wife sampled the croissant with bacon, eggs, and cheese. Also, a creamy warm polenta with a red pepper sauce. She wished that the sauce was a bit warmer. The beautiful latte produced by the baristas negated any issues my wife had with her dishes. Coffee FTW! Came on a Sunday morning around 7:45am with a group of 7. Staff greeted us. This coffee shop is small, but it has inside and outside seating. Since we arrived early, there were still plenty of seats available. Around 8:30am or so, people started filing in. You order at the counter. Drinks are called out when ready to pick up at the counter. You're given a number if you order food. and they bring it to you. I had a vanilla cappuccino which was probably an 8oz I'd say, and a croissant breakfast sandwich with bacon, an egg, and cheddar. It cost me about $13. Everything was ready within 10mins so very quick turnaround for service. My cappuccino was just right. The croissant could've been a little more fluffy and soft but it was good enough. My friend had the Vietnamese steak and eggs with a macchiato, I believe. The table we sat at had a ceiling pipe leaking above us, so beware of the table towards the center of the shop. Blacksmith's biggest attraction is the stellar coffee that it serves that, at least to a coffee novice like me, is on par with the best coffee I have ever had at Intelligentsia. However, perhaps an equally attractive aspect of Blacksmith is the delicious breakfast items on the menu. With items priced up to $14 per order, breakfast at Blacksmith is not cheap, but is certainly worth the bucks! For one, the egg and ham biscuit that I ordered was a large biscuit with ham in between and a sunny-side-down egg on top of the biscuit, and was so delicious that I had to leave the restaurant in regret when I couldn't finish the large portion. Treat yourself once in a while and splurge on a moderately-priced, top-notch breakfast! Blacksmith is a good place to do that. I had the biscuit with gravy, ham, and eggs, and all the flavors mingled together harmoniously. I was most impressed by the biscuits themselves, as they tasted like they were made from scratch. Also, the Valrhona mocha is on point. It has a deep chocolate taste that really pops out of the coffee's flavor profile. The bad: Being the slow eater that I am and the fact that there was a lot of gravy, my biscuit ended up getting very soggy and lost texture. Also, price wise, everything on Blacksmith's menu is pretty upscale. The ugly: I came to Blacksmith to hopefully do work, but the interior was super crowded, and the only outlets appear to be near the counter, so not the best place for group work. Also, the parking lot is a pain as well. All in all, Blacksmith is a great option if you're trying to catch up with friends and are hungry. If you're trying to actually be productive, however, you might wanna reconsider your options. read more

Steak and eggs. The only reason why I come here. And wifi. The pretty coffee is a plus. Come here if you want to take aesthetically pleasing shots of your latte art because they make it very nicely here by really nice baristas. The Steak and Eggs (bo ne) is the only thing that dragged me to trying this place and I thought it was good, just a little over priced but good. The almond crescent is very good too! It compliments my too-pretty-to-drink vanilla latte. The biscuits though are delicious with the butter + jelly they give you, I totally eat it all day. read more

I'm not going to lie... ever since I've gone 'paleo' I really missed my grande, non-fat, with one sweet & lo cappuccino. BUT!!! I finally found a place that makes lattes with almond milk!!!! WOO HOO! Talk about my lifesaver! Earlier today, I met a friend up for coffee and my 2nd breakfast. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy anything on their menu because nothing was paleo-friendly. But, they did have homemade almond milk, which was what they made my latte with :) The almond milk latte was delicious! The espresso was fragrant and I enjoyed my entire cup to the very last drop. Unfortunately, they did not have agave nor honey at the 'sugar/spoon station' so I pulled out a packet of honey from my purse (yes, I do carry it for emergencies like this). Since this is one place where I can actually enjoy a cup latte or cappuccino made exactly the way I want... Great spot to chill and grab some studying or work done. I couldn't conect to Wifi when I was there and I didn't bother as I wasn't staying for long. The Vietnamese steak and egg was good and can be shared. The coffee was okay but it's pretty. I don't see why I won't return but at the same time there are so many other coffee houses to rotate. Came in the recommendation of my coffee snob, Montrose-dwelling co-worker. Ticking off coffee houses like a seasoned bar crawler counts their local dives, Blacksmith was the first one he recommended. Apparently, the shop is part of the Hay Merchant, Underbelly blockbuster and sits right across Waugh from these two crowd-pleasers. Expecting the usual hipster crowd and antiquey decor, I was pleasantly surprised to see a light dusting of Chinese porcelain figurines, but not much else in the way of aesthetic embellishment. The focus is clearly on the product, but more importantly, on the service. Don't expect to-go cups, rapid customer turnover, or a quick cuppa. Blacksmith's forte is clearly on the creation of a simple, impeccable cup. And across the board, they can do it right - espresso drinks are exquisitely pulled, the tea slowly and accurately brewed to temperature and even the chais spicy and not too milk-laden. In the ranking of coffee houses, this one might slightly outshine Southside Espresso, but perhaps only due to the extra space and lovely patio. I read about Blacksmith in an article about the best coffee places by state and decided I would make the long trip 5 blocks down before work. I came early and I'm glad I did. The quality of coffee and service they provide requires a bit more time than your average Starbucks, but it is well worth the wait. As I opened the back door to Blacksmith, subtle coffee aromas wafted my way and my mouth began to water. I had already decided on the scratch square biscuit with sausage, cheese, and egg; but I was uncertain what coffee I would order. I asked the barista for recommendations, and decided on the delicious slow-pour Colombian Primavera, which had a medium intensity that was made somewhat lighter by the balancing flavors of lemongrass, sorghum, & citrus. I waited a bit for my biscuit to come out as they weren't quite ready, and again it was well worth the wait. In contrast you your average breakfast sausage biscuit which is a sage-ery assault on your taste buds leaving you in desperate need of water to cleanse your pallet; Blacksmith's sausage biscuit was mild, but flavorful with a very slight sweetness given by the biscuit that paired well with the meatiness of the sausage. After each bite, I took a sip and enjoyed the unadulterated flavor of the coffee, without needing to cleanse my pallet. The building itself is relatively small but uses it's space well by relying on 2 bars to add several more seats, and give you a good view of some of the brewing. The decoration is an interesting mix of industrial accent walls, dark wooden storage shelves carrying a variety of coffees & teas, and a surprising number of lucky cats - you know, the ones that sometimes wave. Near the end of my meal, the barista brought around a sample of dry, cinnemon biscotti, which were absolutely delicious. Blacksmith is definitely on my A list for breakfast and A+ for coffee. I'm obsessed with this place. Everything I've had has been absolutely amazing. The first time I went, I tried the steak and eggs and coffee. A little expensive for a quick breakfast (~$30 for two people) but well worth the money. The steak&eggs are cooked in a cast iron skillet and served with bread (make your own sandwich) with mayo and pate. I went again, a few days later and got steak and eggs (again) with an almond milk latte. It was so good, and the almond milk is homemade! They've also got free wifi if you need to study or do work, which is a plus. Last weekend, I went again and got an iced latte (amazing, again), and a croissant. They asked me if I wanted to add creme fraiche and marmalade...and I obliged. Once again, so tasty! I want to go back to try the biscuits...and drink more coffee! read more
