Day 5 of Houston food trip, first stop. At a friend's recommendation, we all came here for a mid-day brunch. This was an interesting, trendy coffee shop that had a limited but decent looking brunch menu consisting mostly of biscuit and croissant breakfast options. Seeing that biscuits were far and away the most highlighted item, we all ordered the two savory biscuit dishes. Both were good, and the biscuits were definitely tasty, but by themselves neither was much higher than average. However, we found that combining the sausage biscuit dish with the red eye gravy made for a delicious combination. That should be on the menu in my opinion. Charming coffee shop that serves up pretty delicious breakfast and lunch options! I tried the creme fraiche and marmalade scratch square biscuits - and they were DELICIOUS. It's not the most vegetarian friendly coffee shop - but that's no surprise (their other bars/restaurants aren't super veg-friendly either)! They do have some veg-friendly sides: beet & orzo salad, kale salad, citrus radish salad, and sweet soy sprouts. While there was a line, the lady taking our order was really nice and patient with explaining specific menu items to us. That being said, I've recently starting exploring the restaurant scene in Montrose, and I'm sad to say that this place place falls under the "more hipster than tasty" vibe. Croissant sandwich: Good stuff in the croissant. Bacon, good. Egg, good. The croissant..... Not so much. Maybe I've been spoilt with croissant options in Houston, but this isn't what people would call "flakey". For example, try the croissants at French Riviera. Kentucky Hot Brown Sandwich: While the cheese stands out in this dish, by bite number 3, I could feel an impending heartburn setting in. Imagine a Jim Gaffigan voice in your head talking about people and blubber while you shovel the food in your head. It's sorta gravy-esque, it just didn't work for me. Compact interior, parking, and menus, but my oh my, was the place cozy and peaceful as well as stylishly rustic and minimal. Honestly... this was the most idyllic brunch experience I've had yet (if you can catch it on a slower day with the sunlight streaming in through the windows). It surprisingly wasn't loud or crowded during the time that my date and I arrived. The food seems to all be delicious: the Blacksmith plate was good, but get the Vietnamese steak and eggs (bò né), if you can. Restrooms are adequately clean (take a right from the entrance). I would bring my friends along to study here if we can find some time in the morning to grab a table. It's honestly really beautiful here, one of my most favorite cafes that I've been to. This is one cafe that has good drinks but just okay food. We ordered the Hot Cocoa and Vanilla Latte. They were nice. The temperature of the drinks was perfect to drink without burning your mouth, but if you like your drink hot, ask for extra hot. The Smoked Salmon Dill Scramble comes on a toast and makes the toast soggy. It'll be better to get the toast in the side. The Scratch Square Biscuit with cheddar, egg, and sausage was nothing to remember. The sausage was extra chewy and the biscuit was toasted in more than necessary amount of butter. That being said the atmosphere was very good as a cafe. There were a lot of people working on their laptops. Been wanting to try Blacksmith for the LONGEST TIME! Worth it. It was getting packed for Sunday brunch but wait time for drinks and food was not long at all. Employees are very polite and helpful. We got the Vietnamese steak and eggs, biscuit with crème fraiche and jam, biscuit with sausage, egg, and cheese, and the silver platter chilequiles. Food came out hot and fresh and everything was pretty satisfying but the steak was kind of sweet for my taste. At the beginning of May, I was in Texas with family for a wedding. Blacksmith was one of the several restaurants we decided to check out. They have several tables you can put together for a larger group (our group consisted of 6). Overall this place is on the smaller side of things. You order at the counter and get your food delivered to your table. My uncle and I both ordered the Vietnamese Steak and Eggs. My bf ordered the Smoked Salmon Dill Scramble and a Flat White. The Vietnamese Steak and Eggs was quite salty. It comes with the steak and eggs in a skillet, the bread and pate on the side. The steak and the egg portion was a little too salty for myself and my uncle. It's a good thing they provided French bread as it was the one thing (other than water) that helped cleanse the palate. This dish is a pretty good size. But some of the other dishes our group ordered were on the smaller side. My brother ended up having to order again as whatever he had ordered was unexpectedly small. The Smoked Salmon Dill Scramble was a good sized dish and tasty without issues. The flat white was delicious and pretty! Overall, the food was okay for the price. My friend and I popped in to catch up and grab something to eat and sip. We got here in the afternoon on a weekday and it was pretty packed, lucky for us we got a table. Service here is quick. As a medical student, I'm always looking for places around town to camp out and study for long periods of time. Blacksmith is one of my favorite places to do just that! Located on a popular strip of Westheimer in Montrose, Blacksmith occupies a convenient location not far from other activities and restaurants. It also fulfills my trifecta of what makes a great coffee shop (for my study marathon habit): great coffee, plenty of outlets, and delicious savory food options. All of their coffee options are great, and some of my favorite items off the food menu are their oatmeal (topped with nuts, granola, and fresh fruit) and either two scratch square biscuit options (pick your poison: sweet or savory). All in all, this is a great coffee shop that I keep returning to for my study sessions. And it also seems like a great spot to catch up with friends or read a book if you're one of those lucky folks who go to coffee shops for pleasure, not work! read more

Our family had the hardest time deciding what to order so we got a little of everything. We shared the dos tacos, the chilaquilles, the blt, the chicken salad lettuce wraps, plus we added some OJ and a couple of dirty chais and a cortado. Everything was amazing! I also had a powdered doughnut which was very good stuff! So why 4 stars? There are hardly any outlets. One bar at the front of the shop has outlets. If you sit at the bar, bring a sweater. My balls practically froze off. All of the other awesome seating and tables are unfortunately non-powered. Rating this as a coffee shop and not taking points away because it's popular and can have long lines. If you want a proper espresso or coffee this place is on point. They can have long lines at times but the baristas move through the drinks at a good pace without sacrificing quality. Further more all the drinks are served in the appropriate size (which is not to be taken for granted in this Starbucks obsessed world). I am a frequent visitor of Starbucks as you can't deny the convenience of them but I hate when I order a flat white and I get asked what size (even according to the menu there's only one size). Enough of that...Blacksmith is a winner for the coffee lover. Now for the surprise...their biscuits are the talk of the town and specifically the biscuit sandwich w sausage, egg and cheddar is noted by several publications as a top sandwich in Houston. I have to say it is an excellent food option. The biscuit is delicious, tender but holds up good enough. The sausage patty is flavorful and my egg was a perfect over medium. The employees are your prototypical hipsters- nice but not friendly, polite but not patronizing- so this place isn't service-oriented if that's what you're looking for. Ambiance: Casual, relaxed and unpretentious; not really a good date place, much better for a casual/quick meal; conducive to work when it's not busy, but because it has self-seating and because it's so small it becomes very frustrating to show up during a busy time, which for me was a Friday at around 1. Food: Viet steak and eggs: $15 for only two ingredients so I'd say it's overpriced. Great presentation. No complaints about the eggs- they were cooked perfectly and were so delicious. The steak itself had an amazing flavor- an interesting balance of sweet and savory- BUT was tough to chew. IDK, maybe that's what Viet steak is supposed to be like but I wished it had been softer. First, the pros: -No issues parking, at least at ~11AM on a Friday. -Rapid and friendly counter service, and food arrived quickly. -Their regular coffee was solid, a good 4/5. And then, the neutral: -The environment was standard, unoriginal (oh, the irony) hipster coffee bar. Nothing special, but I also wouldn't mind passing a couple of hours there reading or working on a laptop. And the finally, the cons: -Poorly stocked coffee bar. No spoons or other stirrers, and they were too busy to easily wrangle an employee to restock it. -The BLT sandwich was, in a word, embarrassing. It was essentially a mesculin greens sandwich with bacon garnish. Something was off with the taste of the pickled green tomatoes, and there was a slab of mystery cheese vs meat adherent to the upper bun that wasn't listed on the menu description. The only redeeming feature was the molasses wheat bun, which almost made the second half of the sandwich palatable after I stripped it of the green tomatoes and 3/4 of the greens. In summary, this is a standard hipster coffee bar (4/5) playing poorly at the breakfast/brunch game (1/5). Perhaps I just made a poor menu choice, but I doubt I'll be back given the vast array of more reliable breakfast/brunch options in Houston. read more

A cozy little place, I had come with my husband to meet a friend at around 10 am on a Sunday. There is parking but it's shared; there are two lots so if one is full, make a round to the other side that connects to the entrance to Blacksmith. There was a line inside and we ended up waiting for about 10 minutes before we got to the counter. The menu is posted on the wall by the door so you can begin planning what to order from the beginning. They also offer pastries like croissants and donuts at the front. Hubby and I are vegetarian but we don't eat onion and garlic so we stuck with something simple. We ended up getting an almond croissant and black coffee for him and a biscuit with spicy marmalade and crème fraîche, polenta (reportedly vegan), and a cup of orange juice for me. You'll get a number if you're ordering and you also get the silverware then and you seat yourself. There is a water dispenser inside complete with metal cups. He thought the croissant was a bit dry and felt cheated because there was barely any almond filling, if that was even the filling. Coffee is coffee. I enjoyed my biscuit (nice and buttery) and the marmalade and crème fraîche were the perfect complements. The polenta was nice and soft and came with a dollop of some mildly spicy red pepper sauce and a cilantro leaf garnish. I don't think it was safe even though the cashier said it was just "red peppers and almonds". I just scooped it off and ate the rest. My omnivore friend got a BLT which he enjoyed. The place was pretty packed already so it took a bit of time to find a table; my friend was recovering from leg surgery so a table was preferable. We ended up getting one outside, which was fine as the weather wasn't too hot yet. The patio seating wasn't the most comfortable but our food cane out maybe 10 minutes later. The BLT came out an additional 10 minutes after. I noticed the table behind us took a long while to get their food. We were there to catch up and weren't on a time crunch so this wasn't too big of an issue. There was a door by the door with a photo that contained a toilet on it. I assume that would be where the bathrooms are located. All in all, a nice place with decent fare. Pastries are just okay. Service is good enough; they'll clear the tables after you. Half of the patrons were there with friends and the other half were there for work/study. Parking may not be too easy and that may be reflected when you're trying to find a seat. This is the first coffee house I visit in Houston, so I am not sure how it compares to the others ones in the city. I have been to a lot of other coffee shops in different cities but I really liked this one. It has a great ambience. People are always coming and going so the crowd is changing all the time. I had their vegan chocolate chip cookies and their caramel latte. The caramel latte was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to go back again sometime to drink it again! The service was phenomenal and overall great experience. They have water right by the entrance, free wifi, and outlets under the counter for anyone wanting to do work. If you want to work here, just know it will be a little loud, so not ideal for video calls haha but you can definitely get work done. They have outdoor seating and it can get a bit loud with the cars passing by, but nothing too crazy. Overall, this is a great coffee shop and you should check it out! read more

I always feel slightly judged in hipster coffeeshops because I'm about as basic as you can be (lol), but Blacksmith is hands-down my new favorite coffeeshop in Houston. For starters, the parking is abundant, which was probably the hugest relief as some coffeeshops (cough cough Southside) are literally impossible to go to because I can never find parking, so that was a nice start to my Blacksmith experience. Also there is a ton of seating both inside and outside. It's a little loud but perfectly cozy and spacious, and a great environment for both studying and hanging out. I came to write a paper so I decided to order a flat white with the sausage, egg & cheddar biscuit for added sustenance. When I walked up to the counter, the girl was so friendly and asked if she could start my coffee while I waited for her to finish with the other orders and take mine. I told her I couldn't decide between the cream fraiche & marmalade biscuit or the sausage one, and even though I went with the sausage + cheese, when she rang me up she gave me a free side of cream & marmalade just so I could taste them both. It's rare to get that kind of considerate treatment at any restaurant these days! 5/5 for service. My flat white was great, no complaints. The biscuits are AMAZING - possibly the best I've ever had (though Buffalo Grille is very close, so I can't quite decide). But omg the cream & marmalade was so tasty, and the fried egg + cheese + sausage was just as delicious and savory.
