Loved this coffee shop! There is indoor + outdoor seating available. Free parking and wifi. The vanilla oat milk latte was exactly what I needed to get me through my studying! However, when I got there it took me about 15 minutes to connect to the wifi. I told the cashier and she said there may have been too many people connected to the wifi. She said it was busier than usual but It didn't seem like an outrageous amount of people. For studying, this place is really hard to beat. It's got decent seating and there are some wall outlets. However, the tragic part is that it closes relatively early :( What makes this place so great? Well, the coffee is excellent in both americano and latte. The americano came out as a surprisingly layered drink, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. The latte is perfectly bittersweet and those seeking sweeter and creamier latte based drinks have plenty of delicious syrups to work with. Despite their amazing coffee, what seals the deal for me is that they offer under $3 iced tea with unlimited refills. As a student, nothing could be sweeter and I would be really sad if they took this away. Those seeking more exquisite and rarer teas have plenty of options to choose from as well at higher price points (though they're probably not refillable). The noise levels are moderate and putting in headphones is enough to get in the zone and focus really well. The décor is appropriate, somewhat muted and dark, which is perfectly to my taste to get work done. They have plenty of outdoor seating, which is shaded and perfect for the Houston afternoon sun. Oh my goodness, Blacksmith you were our little gem on the road to New Orleans from Austin. Waiting out some of the morning Houston traffic we tucked away to Blacksmith. Amazing coffee, amazing biscuits and anything you'd want to go with both. The biscuits are huge, flaky, buttery and taste amazing whether you just jam em up or have them as a Sammy. As a Sammy you have to be careful and have a supportive grip because the flaky nature of the biscuit just wants to crumble into bits of heaven crumbs on your plate. There is parking in back, not a whole whole lot of spots, but enough that you should be able to get one. It's small inside, but people tend to move through fairly quickly, so you should be able to get a bar seat off to the side if nothing else. read more

I've been wanting to try Blacksmith for awhile but every time I come here they are closed!! The hours is 7AM - 5PM. Anyways, came here for brunch time on a Saturday a bit after noon. For a Saturday early afternoon, it was predictably busy, the restaurant is the same typical small size that is similar to other cafes in Montrose. I ordered the Vietnamese steak and eggs and a latte. The steak and eggs came on a sizzling platter with juices or broth in it. Though, I think the sizzling platter is for show because it was definitely not sizzling when brought to me. The juices or broth on the platter were nice, as to keep the steak juicy, however I thought it was too salty and eventually just made all my food taste salty. The steak was cut up nice and small into bite size pieces, good for people like me with jaw problems. Aside from the entree, the meal came with a piece of bread with butter and pate as well as a side salad with no dressing. I appreciated that they used healthier, better quality greens and no dressing. The latte tasted typical, it wasn't terrible, but nothing mind blowing either. I enjoyed it. Service was very friendly, we had to sit at the bar since there were no extra tables. The barista/cashier chatted with us for a bit. I would recommend this place for those that want to have a coffee with brunch with friends. Wonderful coffee! We actually came here on the recommendation of a coffee shop owner in New Orleans (Solo Espresso). The coffee here is highly touted and, after trying, it does live up to the hype. They have a nice variety of both iced and hot coffees to choose from in addition to good eats. There so many coffee shop gems in Houston, but this one just doesn't speak to me. I ordered an iced coffee with almond milk (which I was told they make themselves), and I added one packet of raw sugar to it. I had no idea what sort of coffee it was, but I was out to have coffee, enjoy the fun view of Westheimer, and read my enthralling book. I kept sipping my coffee hoping each sip would be better than the last, but it wasn't. There was an annoying bitter aftertaste. The only time it didn't taste like poison was when I sipped a piece of sugar up the straw. Perhaps this is what Marry Poppins meant by a "spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down...", but I didn't pay for medicine while I came in to read my book. Starting to feel like a sourpuss, I decided to go up to the counter and ask for their well known biscuits. The service was broth friendly and prompt! 1 star for that! Once I received my biscuit, I noticed it had a funny semi-burnt taste. I examined it, turned it over, and poked at it a little and thought maybe my coffee is making this taste bad, so I put some marmalade on it and took a bite. Beautifully sweet marmalade followed by another unappetizing taste of biscuit...sigh. This was it for me. I finished the chapter I was on and left. I absolutely loved having brunch here this morning. It was super packed but not to the point where there was no space to sit. My friend and I came in stood in line people watching, looking at the places becoming available, and staring at the black board of a wall with the menu items in block letters. Everything looked so delicious that we got in a debate of what we could ask to sub to make it to our heart's content. When we finally approached the cash register we were greeted by the girl at the register who looked like an upgraded Asian version of Louise Black from Season 6 of Project Runway. I requested that my scratch biscuit be served without the sausage and I wanted the creme fraiche and marmalade. Absolutely amazing from first bite to the last. The only one star deduction is for not having options like other places where they have a lot of coffee available or if they did I totally missed it. My friend got the Kentucky something and it looked really good. My macchiato was like what you would get from a coffee shop like Catalina Coffee or Siphon - not the mass market faux "caramel macchiato" ala Starbucks. There's plenty of parking in the private lot behind Blacksmith. Blacksmith is located to the right of Hay Merchant. The first time I came here, I ordered a latte and a croissant with jam. The croissant was the best croissant I've ever had! It was giant, buttery, flaky, and delicious. The bacon, egg, and cheddar croissant is awesome as well if you're craving something savory. The latte was large and came with cute latte art. My total came out to be around $10 which I thought was a little too high but I was still happy with my purchase. The second time I came here, I ordered an iced latte and I brought my laptop. The wifi wasn't working so I ended up going to Southside Expresso down the street next to Uchi. I like Vietnamese coffee and have a couple spots I hit up but decided to try something new and I was pleasantly surprised. Pricier than I would normally pay for my coffee but after watching the care the barista put into my drink I didn't mind one bit. The staff was friendly. It wasn't overly sweet but wish it was just a tad bit stronger since I drink my normal coffee black. Pretty long line towards the back door and parking lot is always full for Blacksmith, Underbelly and Hay Merchant but a nice little hipster coffee shop with great food and coffee! The menu is fairly small and it takes a little but to get your order but the line moves pretty quickly and the changeover is fairly smooth so you can grab a table and parking spot! The inside has exposed brick with the menu on a chalkboard.. Minimal in terms of decor and lots of people here just grabbing coffee and studying on a Sunday. There is minimal outdoor seating as well as indoor seating. The croissant was crispy and soft on the inside, as it should be! The bacon crispy and egg over easy to perfection! The sandwich was simple but done perfectly. The cafe sua da didn't taste like a normal Vietnamese coffee I'm use to. Less sweet but fairly good none the less. Since Blacksmith is the brainchild of some three famous food/coffee stars, I was hoping Blacksmith would a nearly magical experience. The Good: There is a private lot for parking, and the place has that trendy-and-sufficiently-hipster feel. The Bad: The items are a little pricey, even for Westheimer. We ordered the regular and Valrhona lattés, both of which went excellently with the almond croissant. The staff here is absolutely impeccable. They are kind and very knowledgeable. Initially my first cup of coffee was the daily black coffee, but for some reason the coffee was so sour and I could not drink it. So they suggested the Americano and gave me another drink instead. So thankful and super sweet of them! The Vietnamese steak and eggs was a decent meal; but the bread is not a traditional Banh Mi, and the meat quality is lower end steak. This place is awesome! I came here to enjoy a coffee while sending some emails and found it to be a delightful experience! I had a vanilla latte which was served in a huge mug with some cute latte art. It was delicious but that cup is huge so I wasn't able to finish my whole drink. I went to Blacksmith specifically for the biscuits with clotted cream and marmalade since I had seen a publication that RAVED about them. They were solid but nothing to write home about. The best thing was the cream and marmalade which came on the side and was very good. The biscuits themselves with pretty large (since they cost $5.50 a pop that was good to see!). However, they were somewhat hard and taste-wise unremarkable. Not bad, don't get me wrong. Just nothing extraordinary. My husband says that we shouldn't judge too harshly since it's COVID season and lots of places are off their game. Perhaps that's the case here? I've been to Blacksmith several times, but always for their coffee. Blacksmith shares a parking lot with Underbelly and Hay Merchant, two institutions that I am big fans of. There are three parking lots, so you don't need to spend time circling around the surrounding neighborhoods (unless it's the weekend). One lot is behind Underbelly and Hay Merchant. The other two are located behind and next to Blacksmith. Kelly had come back from her Istanbul and Israel trip, so we had to do our usual exchange of gifts and stories. Kelly decided on Blacksmith for brunch. She ordered the popular menu item, Vietnamese steak & eggs, and a cortado. I got the scratch square biscuits with crème fraiche & marmalade with a sunny side up egg. I also ordered the cane sugar latte. I'm a carb monster, so I could eat bread and rice all day! The biscuits were served hot, and the crème fraiche just melted onto the biscuit. The cane sugar latte was really good. It was just the right amount of sweetness, and I always appreciate latte art. The quality of coffee here really stands out. The Vietnamese steak & eggs were equally as delicious, and I could see why it was a popular menu item. The steak is cooked in a delicious sauce, and served with a piece of French baguette with pate and butter. I seriously would have been just happy with the baguette, pate, and butter! Kelly ended up dipping the baguette in the sauce, which at that point, I wished we had more of the baguette. Blacksmith can get quite crowded during the day and there was an equal amount of students, young professionals, and hipsters. I'm not sure how anyone gets any studying done here, but whatever floats your boat! I came here on a Sunday walk immediately after visiting another highly touted coffee shop in the area and was expecting Blacksmith to be the clear winner. Instead, it left me hungry and disappointed. I ordered the iced coffee lassi ($6) and the Vietnamese steak & eggs ($15), two of the menu items that are getting a lot of hype recently. Iced coffee lassi - I found this "breakfast drink" to be very unique with a surprising texture and anything but addicting. It reminded me of drinking a probiotic. This is not for everyone. Vietnamese steak & eggs - It came out in a skillet, just swimming in a marinade. The steak pieces, which I assume are ribeye are diced in 1" pieces and mixed with carmelized onions, with two fried eggs, sunnyside up, placed on top. This was good for the first few bites. The bread was a little too rigid to make into any form of a sandwich. I wasn't a big fan of the mayo or texture of their pate that comes with the meal. The ones I have tried have been REALLY good and they steep them for 5-10 minutes and give u a lil pot to go with your tea cup. I had the chamomile n xu phung(spelling)? Staff is very friendly and accommodating. I love the biscuits n croissant sandwiches. Yum. Ask for a side of marmalade. Double yum. The interior isn't too big, so I imagine difficulty in finding seating during peak hours. I called to see if they were offering dine-in. For COVID it's sit down outside only. There are about 10 tables. You go up to the door and there's a menu outside, also on their website. Open the door and there's an employee waiting to take your order and answer questions. They holler your name when the drink is ready. I order breakfast. The bacon was a little tough to bite into and to chew. I, also, ordered an iced vanilla latte, which had a very odd flavor to it. I kept taking sips trying to figure out if it was made with soy milk (or some other kind that was not cows milk). I am still unsure if it was just the flavor of the coffee beans they use or the milk, but either way it wasn't good. My husband ordered the plate with eggs, potatoes, sausage, avocado, and a croissant. I tasted one of his potatoes and it was very salty. After we left he commented about the food and said, "You cook better breakfast". For what we got, we could've cooked it at home for a fraction of the price and been better satisfied. So first thing first, the people here are really nice. Like "woke up on the right side of the bed" calm. While there was a line, the lady taking our order was really nice and patient with explaining specific menu items to us. That being said, I've recently starting exploring the restaurant scene in Montrose, and I'm sad to say that this place place falls under the "more hipster than tasty" vibe. Croissant sandwich: Good stuff in the croissant. Bacon, good. Egg, good. The croissant..... Not so much. Maybe I've been spoilt with croissant options in Houston, but this isn't what people would call "flakey". For example, try the croissants at French Riviera. Kentucky Hot Brown Sandwich: While the cheese stands out in this dish, by bite number 3, I could feel an impending heartburn setting in. Imagine a Jim Gaffigan voice in your head talking about people and blubber while you shovel the food in your head. It's sorta gravy-esque, it just didn't work for me. Latte: As pretty as it was (and I really appreciate the work care the barista did in pouring the latte), it really wasn't good. It tasted watered down. Compact interior, parking, and menus, but my oh my, was the place cozy and peaceful as well as stylishly rustic and minimal. Honestly... this was the most idyllic brunch experience I've had yet (if you can catch it on a slower day with the sunlight streaming in through the windows). It surprisingly wasn't loud or crowded during the time that my date and I arrived. The food seems to all be delicious: the Blacksmith plate was good, but get the Vietnamese steak and eggs (bò né), if you can. Restrooms are adequately clean (take a right from the entrance). I would bring my friends along to study here if we can find some time in the morning to grab a table. It's honestly really beautiful here, one of my most favorite cafes that I've been to. This is one cafe that has good drinks but just okay food. We ordered the Hot Cocoa and Vanilla Latte. They were nice. The temperature of the drinks was perfect to drink without burning your mouth, but if you like your drink hot, ask for extra hot. The Smoked Salmon Dill Scramble comes on a toast and makes the toast soggy. It'll be better to get the toast in the side. The Scratch Square Biscuit with cheddar, egg, and sausage was nothing to remember. The sausage was extra chewy and the biscuit was toasted in more than necessary amount of butter.
