The barista here is impressive. Incredibly busy round the clock but calm, collected, and fast - AND she still latte-arts. By the way, Pacifica oat milk and no upcharge - amazing. I recently paid $10.50 for a regular size oat milk latte in Beverly Hills that didn't even taste that good, so this was a welcome change - And yum! Took quite awhile to get my coffee, but I loved it, and I didn't mind the wait. Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's really yum coffee. Maybe it's both. Regardless, this is worth a visit. read more

The people who work there are the worst. They take so long. Like there will be no line and I'm waiting for a coffee for 30 minutes while people chit chat and go on their phones. Also the coffee is so bad, watered down yet barely and ice which like, how is that possible. Also, I like to be considerate of the environment. This place acts like that's horrible. I always ask for my drinks in a paper cup. The girl working there refused to do it for "health reasons". Like... dude you realize boiling hot drinks go in these cups. Why can't a cold drink go in it? I found my new obsession!! Especially the moment their honey bee iced latter hit my lips, I was sold! Not too sweet and delicious on so many levels! Just recently tried their green tea frappy and they've done it again! Won my taste buds with a great green tea flavor, not chalky, and not too sweet. The lavender iced latte was also good but didn't win my heart as the 2 drinks above. Not only is it tucked away in one of the buildings in Rice University, but it's cute and the drinks are legit! Rice coffeehouse is the go to store for many a Rice student. However, if you're not a student it's hard to get parking here, unless you're willing to park in the circle drive, run down, grab your order, and leave. The other option is to park in one of the 15 minute parking spots. The interior is very cozy, and the large draw here is that the store is student run. The music can get loud at times, but is generally variable according to student tastes. Seating is plenty, but can get limited, especially just after lunchtime. The service is great, and Rice coffeehouse has birthed many a barista. Regarding beans, rice coffeehouse uses Katz's, which I personally dislike. However, I understand that they're good value beans that wouldn't offend most people. I would suggest a Roaster change be put in consideration, even if it would raise the price of coffee a couple cents. The drink called "nutty bee" is a favorite of mine, ever since early college here. I would recommend it for anyone, even people that don't like the taste of coffee. I would come by here anytime I was already on Rice campus because of the great value, familiar vibes, and limited parking. read more

I love coming here for a mid week pick me up drink. My go to order is the nutty bee with oat milk (served both hot or cold) and luckily alternative milks have no extra charge! They have monthly specialty drinks that are always nice to try. In addition, they have $1 drip coffee that you can fill your own mug with if you are in a rush. You can get pastries, bagels, and other treats that you can heat up if you are eating it soon. Service can be slow and can take up to 30 minutes to get your drink during peak hours (usually between classes). read more

I come here once a week to get either a green tea freeze, green tea frappy, or nutty bee with almond milk. The entire place is student run and they have a lot of pastries and vegan cinnamon rolls and bars. Definitely get the cinnamon roll and heat it up when you're going to eat it. It's really big and just $2.50. This month I tried their drink of the month (toffee coffee). It was alright, I'm not a huge fan of the raspberry flavor and I got it warm. I think if I got it without the raspberry and cold it would've been better. There are some hits and misses with their drinks of the month but they're always very innovative and have new items on the menu. Service can be slower at these times too. - noisy & full: I feel like this has been extra so this year; sometimes I can't find anywhere to sit! Coffee.). Because it's small and frequented by students/faculty, lines are long. Ofc nothing can really be done to improve that since this is such a token spot on campus! Just be wary that if you don't have a mug and a $1 bill on you, you can't jump the line to get your drip. Coffeehouse is extremely popular on campus because everyone insists on supporting student-run businesses, which I think is a great idea. It's a wonderful place to sit and have a drink if you have an hour to kill between classes or a free afternoon. Everyone here (baristas & guests) is friendly, and when I visit I don't feel obligated to buy something unless I want to. It's nice to not have that pressure. But, do I love their coffee? Mmm...it's a hit or miss. Often, the drinks are perfectly fine (personal favorite: cup of ambition). But sometimes, the espresso drinks I order come out tasting burnt, or the coffee tastes metallic, or the mango drink leaves a weird dry feeling in my throat. But, do I love Coffeehouse? Yes. I am still a huge fan. When it's good, it's good. And if you're a tea person, my favorite is the honeybrush apricot green tea. It smells so great, I could sniff it all day. read more

I love my Rice Coffeehouse. I love the $1 coffee refills if you bring your own mug/thermos (and the very convenient line skipping that is allowed when you only have to throw money in the Honor Jar). I love the cozy fire with glowing owl eyes that gets turned on in the winter. I love the little Sound Worm mic in the corner that streams the audio of Coffeehouse to a sculpture in the middle of campus. I love the Everything Bars and Oh My Pocket Pies that make an easy, desperate, delicious lunch. I love the large tables for working with the casual music in the background. Although I will admit I'm extremely biased as a Rice student, I didn't even begin to enjoy Coffeehouse during my Junior year of college (conveniently coinciding with the onset of my coffee addiction). It's a student-run business, lines that go out the door multiple times during the day, prices haven't been raised in the past 10 years, and a great comfortable atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoy the mixed drinks you can ask for such as a London Fog/Cup of Cozy(chai latte with early grey tea), Cup of Ambition (hot chocolate with shots of espresso), or a Mexican Hot Chocolate (hot chocolate with spices). The squirts/pumps of flavor are a little expensive, but I'm confident you can make a good drink without them. read more

I spend way too much time at Coffeehouse. It stays pretty busy throughout the day until closing (at 1 am on weekdays), but the service is pretty efficient, and the staff is incredibly friendly and will let night owls like me hang out while they clean up until about 1:30. This is a great spot for studying or just hanging out with friends. There are a variety of seating options, and they recently added wooden lap boards so students can still write/use their laptops in some of the more comfortable seats. I especially love all the food options. They have a number of locally made treats, from the more savory pocket pies (the Spinach and Artichoke is a must-try) to treats from Sinfull Bakery (the Everything Bar is a great late-night snack). They are continually expanding their options, and I've really enjoyed the new oatmeal and cashew/coconut milk options! Their drinks have great prices and are always a treat. I come here for single shot soy lattes. I tend to avoid the sweet drinks since the syrups don't always taste that authentic, but I won't say no to vanilla lattes. The Good Morning chai is also fragrant and spicy--it's basically a dirty chai. Coffeehouse provides cheap yet robust coffee brews that are the perfect (and convenient) pick-me-up for any occasion. People rave about the Texas Pecan brew. Really nutty, aromatic flavor--a bit sweet as well. I've also had the $1.50 bagels, scones, and Everything Bars (from Sinfull Bakery). Bro, it only costs 2.50 for an Everything Bar here while at other places they cost around 3.25. I also love studying here, particularly ever since they got the desks for the armchairs. But it can get pretty loud and whatnot inside, so I tend to come either in the morning or at night. read more

I know very very little about coffee - honestly I only drink it for the caffeine during finals week. With that disclaimer, I'm writing this review on Rice Coffeehouse based solely on how much I love the environment here. Located in the student center, Coffeehouse is a super chill place to meet up with friends, study, or just hang out in between classes. There's no pressure at all to buy anything, and often times, I just sit right down without even looking at the menu. But if I do happen to order something, the baristas here are so nice! It's student-run business, so sometimes my friends are working, but even the ones I don't know are super super nice! read more

Coffeehouse, how I wish I could give you a better review. I really love the people who work there and how cheap the drinks are. (Rice Coffeehouse is a non-profit so they have to charge low enough prices that they won't make any money. As a result, they have the cheapest coffee I've seen anywhere.) I also like how Coffeehouse carries Hot Bagel Shop bagels - some of the best in Houston if you ask me (and close to what you could get in NYC). Unfortunately, I've found that the coffee doesn't taste very good. The brewed coffee is usually pretty bitter (over-extracted) in my opinion. Even though I don't get flavored coffee anywhere else, I'm usually forced to have the Texas Pecan since it masks the other flavors better. Also, the espresso is very hit or miss, depending on who's pulling the shot. Usually, if I'm getting an espresso drink, I'll go with a mocha (again, more flavors in the cup making individual ones less discernible). My other major complaint is the line. If you go between classes, you'll wait FOREVER for an espresso drink. I'll continue to support Rice Coffeehouse since I'm a fan of student-run businesses, but there are lots of areas for improvement. read more

Coffeehouse is like my 2nd home. I'm literally there every afternoon Monday-Friday until dinner time. When the weather cools down, they'll turn on the fireplace, and it makes the place cozy and inviting. The prices are more affordable here than at the neighboring Brochstein Pavillion, and I love supporting Rice's student run businesses. When I need my caffeine fix, I always get a double americano. Ever since the freshman year of my undergraduate study, Rice Coffeehouse has always been a solid, reliable stop for both non-caffeinated and caffeinated drinks for me. I received only positive experiences from all my visits to this student-run establishment. Located in the center of the campus, Rice Coffeehouse is easily accessible from virtually anywhere in Rice University. It offers a decent selection ranging from various black coffees to non-coffee drinks including teas and Italian soda. Whether I'm in need of a thirst quencher or a pick-up, Rice Coffeehouse is my go-to place! I didn't pick up the habit of drinking coffee during my freshman year and always go for the Italian soda, which is imported soda blended with various flavor syrups of your choice, but after I started to become coffee-savvy, I also enjoy getting the Texas pecan coffee, which has a great pecan aroma as the name suggests. The prices are already reasonable, but you can even get more discounts if you bring your own mug or use the same paper cup holder! I am assuming that you are not a Rice student if you are looking up reviews for this place, because most Rice students already knew how awesome Rice Coffeehouse is! From keeping me awake during late nights to comforting me after a rough day to helping me have a great time with friends, it's safe to say I've grown to love CH on a spiritually level. The staff is super friendly and the place is usually full of people. That being said, it gets pretty crowded, especially after class, and a lot of the time it's hard to find a place to study inside. As far as coffee goes, the Texas Pecan drip is a must try. My personal favorite is the Milky Way, not too sweet but sweet enough for someone as basic as myself. CH's noncoffee selections are also pretty good. The smoothies are very sweet (maybe a little too sweet) and very refreshing, and the italian sodas are solid (raspberry and lime being my fav). My only complaint on drinks is that sometimes there is a consistency problem that varies from barista to barista. All in all, CH is a solid place to chill and probably has kept me sane in some rough times. read more

Coffeehouse is a fairly accurate glimpse of Rice's campus culture- quirky and laid back atmosphere, lots of students studying or catching up over coffee. They use Katz espresso, which isn't my favorite. However, they do a really nice job making their drinks taste amazing. Each month they post a board of the flavored drinks they are featuring, but there are SO many more things you can order that aren't on the menu. Lots of hot teas, lots of latte flavors, lots of frappy flavors. They also give their drinks quirky names, which makes them memorable. My favorites are the chai latte and the Kardashian (which is their lingo for pumpkin spice latte). They also have a nice spread of pastries and cookies, every once and awhile I get a giant cinnamon roll and eat the whole thing by myself (it's great!). It's usually pretty crowded so I rarely study here, but it's an awesome spot to have on campus! read more

I just love Coffeehouse. It is my go-to coffee shop because it's just so convenient, well priced, and consistently yummy. The prices are noticeably cheaper than other boutique and chain coffee shops. I also really appreciate the many promotions that Coffeehouse has created with students in mind. For example, bringing your own mug will get you 25 cents off; getting 10 punches on your coffee sleeve will earn you a free drink and enter you into a drawing for a gift card. These promotions, amongst other things, show that, as a student-run business, Coffeehouse values its customers and does what it can to make good drinks accessible to us college students! As someone who needs a caffeine fix but likes a little (or a lot of) sugar, I particularly enjoy the many unique beverages that Coffeehouse concocts. I truly fell in love with chaus when I discovered the "Cup of Ambition" (hot coco + hazelnut + espresso). This past year, Coffeehouse has also pushed their flavor of the month; one of my favorites was maple, when they offered a "Toronto Fog," a London fog (earl gray steeped in water and frothed milk) with maple flavor. Further, the baristas usually have salt on hand and don't act like I'm crazy when I ask to add that in for a sweet-and-salty twist. If I had to give any critiques, I'd only say that coffee house can get pretty busy and loud at times and occasionally more complicated drinks are inconsistent in quality or strength. However, I find both of these aspects to be forgivable as traits of a student-run business on a campus where coffee is in high demand. The lines are a result of a end-of-class rushes; they can be predicted easily. The slight inconsistency is the product of a large staff necessary to accommodate the crowds and long hours. The perks of a student-run business (low prices with lots of personality) overshadow these slight complaints. Overall, I am pleased that Coffeehouse is always here for me when I need caffeine the most or just want a convenient place to reconnect with a friend. The way that it constantly evolves yet continues to promote a good customer experience just goes to show that Coffeehouse is a great cross-section of the Rice community. read more

This place is a student-run cafe serving good food and good coffee. It serves great coffee and plays good music. There's free wifi and plenty of seating. I would highly recommend it as a place for getting some last minute studying done or just hanging out with friends. The pastries are good and that coffee is very good. They use the Marzocco espresso machine, which is the machine that Starbucks used to use about a decade ago. I'm not saying this as a bad thing either, those machines are actually my personal favorites because they were the last manual machines that Starbucks used. Now everything is automated and no fun. This place mixes modern decor with the old school beauty of that espresso machine. There may be better coffee and food at other places, but for a Rice student you won't find any cafe so comfortable, relaxed and so conveniently close. Lines may be long at times and service can be a bit slow, but hey it's a student-run cafe in the middle of campus. Cut them some slack, take a load off, and relax and enjoy good coffee and good atmosphere. read more

What's not to love about Rice Coffeehouse? First off, it's a great, cozy venue with a variety of seating options. They have tables for studying, couches with coffee tables, and nice chairs near the fireplace (which, if you're lucky enough to be in Houston when it gets super cold, they turn on!). Also, outlets are abundant. They have flexible hours for both the early bird and the night owl (no pun intended). The place is usually bustling with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty members, and even visitors to the university. The service, however, is also reasonably quick and overall superb. The quirky, friendly student baristas are always willing to point you towards the perfect drink, and I'm always ready to try one of the new seasonal creations. I personally recommend the Cup of Glambition, the Good Morning Chai, the "Basic" Pumpkin Spice Latte, and the Honeybrush Apricot Tea (but again, everything is absolutely delicious). The pastries and oatmeal are scrumptious as well. Bring along your mug for a discount!
