We found a reason to try a new place and in California Heights, they had a nice little cafe. We went there for breakfast and they had some good choices. I decided to have the corn beef and hash. The corn beef brisket was very flavorful and i really enjoyed every bite. The scrambled eggs were a little flat but good. The hash browns were fantastic and crispy. Very nice experience. My wife had the omelette and she enjoyed it, taking the rest home with her. We usually keep things simple and try different things. Getting a pancake was out of the question as just one went for nearly 7 dollars. That was too bad because it would have been nice. The food is definitely good so come check it out, I'll give more options on the menu a try on my next visit. The service was good so expect them to look after ya. My friends met me at Blackbird Cafe for my birthday breakfast. None of us had been there yet, but had heard great things about it. Well, we were not disappointed! Such a friendly, attentive staff! For a brunch spot, Blackbird is decent. I went on a Sunday and it wasn't slammed per se, but they were noticeably a little short staffed. Blackbird is a super cute, kitschy place, with an endless menu that may be a bit too expansive. I ordered a matcha latte and fruity pebbles French toast. My SO had regular French toast, regular coffee, and a plate with bacon and eggs. Portions here are quite large (to the point where sharing is likely ideal). Neither of us could finish our food due to the aforementioned, but the food was delicious. If you order the matcha latte, it's not matcha, it's not a latte. It's a drop of sweet matcha flavoring in a glass of milk - it was really awkward to me and I regret ordering it for the price. Service may be hit or miss. We had to ask for missing food, syrup, etc. It sucked, but it could be due to lack of people that day. read more

Stopped in after a graduation. This place is a little small, but was able to accommodate our party of 10. It also closes a little early, but we had enough time to order, eat and enjoy. Thankfully, there are a number of options to choose from, with inclusions of various breakfast meats and other fillings. My burrito was good! It was certainly filling and there was a lot of it. A friend ordered a hot drink that came out in a veritable steaming cauldron, also, which serves to impress if not amaze. I had "the gravy bowl" for breakfast. It comes in a bowl with chunky diced potatoes, scrambled eggs, chopped bacon, sausage, bell peppers, and onions, all topped with country gravy. Ordering country gravy is always a gamble--some places just don't get it right. But this time, I took a chance and won. The gravy was super flavorful and delicious, a real standout. It felt like hitting the jackpot in Las Vegas. I paired it with a black coffee. The coffee was just fair--not bad, but not great, and definitely not the rich, dark roast I prefer. If only I could be dictator of the world, I'd make dark roast the standard everywhere. The food here was fantastic--plentiful, delicious, and served with wonderful hospitality. I have zero complaints about the meal or the service. I do have three minor, purely aesthetic concerns. They're trivial, but as a self-proclaimed interior ambience consultant (and would-be dictator of the world), I'll share them: 1. I'd swap out the bright white lighting for the soft, warm lighting we all loved in the 20th century. It would complement the restaurant's old-school vibe. 2. The restaurant is very clean, which is great! However, there's a strong aroma--probably from the cleaning product used on the floors--that lingers throughout. It reminds me of the same issue at The Potholder Café in downtown Long Beach. Ideally, a restaurant should smell like food cooking, not cleaning supplies. 3. The background music was all reggae covers of classic songs. I personally dislike reggae (unless I'm actually in Jamaica). I'd much rather hear vintage vocal or instrumental jazz from the '40s, '50s, or '60s. In conclusion, this is a great spot for breakfast or lunch. 've been a regular at Blackbird Cafe, whether dining in or grabbing a to-go order, and have always had a positive experience--especially with Annette, who's typically my server. However, my recent visit was a bit of a disappointment, and I'm writing this review to hopefully serve as a constructive moment for the team. I placed an order for a Greek Omelette (no mushrooms) and two slices of sourdough toast. I'll note that to avoid food waste, if you want two slices of toast, you have to specifically ask since it's usually just one slice by default. Parking is always a bit tricky on weekends, given it's street parking only. When I got home and opened my bag, I found only one slice of toast. No big deal--I could let that slide. However, when I opened the omelette container, I found mushrooms, which I specifically asked to be left out due to an allergy. I called the restaurant right away, and the team was kind enough to offer a refund or to remake the order. I opted for the remake. Here's where I think things could be improved: As someone who frequents Blackbird, I've come to expect a certain level of attention to detail. When I'm amending an order--especially when it's for an allergy--it's important that the person who takes the order double-checks the specifics before handing it off. The person on my arrival the done time was extremely apologetic and admitted they got it completely wrong. For my troubles, I think both a refund AND a remake of the meal would've been a more fitting resolution, especially since I was sent home with an incomplete and potentially unsafe meal. To be clear, I've had great experiences here in the past and will likely return again, but I hope this review serves as a gentle reminder for staff to double-check orders, especially when there are amendments. It's an easy fix to avoid unnecessary mistakes, and I think with a little more attention to detail, Blackbird will continue to be a fantastic spot for all of us who enjoy their great food and service. read more

I was in Long Beach for the afternoon and thought I'd find a new café to try. I looked for places on Yelp that had an interesting sandwich or burger. I saw the Ranchero Burger on the menu at Blackbird Café and the search immediately ended. I arrived and the restaurant is a green building on the northwest corner of Orange Ave and Wardlow Road. There is no parking lot and I had to go around the block a few times to try and figure out where to park since a lot of the street parking is labeled with red no parking zones or green 30 minute loading zones. I ended up parking on the street a block west down Wardlow and it only took a few a few minutes to walk to Blackbird. I walked in around 11:30am and was greeted by a nice woman behind the counter who seated me. There are about a dozen tables inside and I think ten or so smaller tables out front in the patio area. I didn't even need to see the menu because I knew I wanted the Ranchero Burger and I ordered it with fries. A little under fifteen minutes later it arrived at the table open faced and looked delicious with all the ingredients in plain view. I put the top bun on, cut it in half, and dug in. The ingredients besides the burger are chopped green chilis, two slices of bacon, Havarti cheese, and an egg and this burger had so much flavor. The server came to check on me and mentioned that they hand form all their burgers to order. The burger was pretty filling so I only had about half of the fries. They could have been cooked a little more crisp but they were good also. I would definitely recommend this burger and if I'm ever in the area again, they had some other interesting menu items that I would be curious to try. read more
