I came here earlier this month on a date to listen to a trio of Caelan Cardello, Joey Ranieri, and Willie Bowman. I loved everything about this venue. It's very intimate downstairs and just what I envision a classic jazz bar / lounge should embody - low light, smooth black and gold decor with a mix of vintage and modern concepts, great acoustics, small tables and booths so you can choose how close you want to be to the performers. I had a wonderful time and the trio was excellent! I was complaining like an old man earlier this week about how "the younger generation" doesn't appreciate jazz music, just to eat my words listening to these youthful professionals. I will be back often for the ambiance, the cocktails, the food, and the friendly well-organized staff.

I probably had one of the most phenomenal Halloween nights over at The Black Cat! Not only was the name so fitting for the evening, it was my last night in SF and it made my time in the city end with a bang (or meow...) Arrived early for the 9:30pm show and was sat in a beautiful spot at the bar; in perfect view to the stage. First things first, The ambiance was absolutely incredible. There's nothing like walking into a deep, dark, sexy jazz bar. This place had it all: Low lights, lively and friendly crowd, with the best little cozy vibe. The staff here was amazing as well. The hostess and the bartender made me feel right at home. For drinks, I had a paper plane, which was exactly what I needed to start off my evening. Strong and refreshing, just like i like it. For food, I opted for the 2 course dinner. I opted for the steak frites which were perfectly medium rare. This came with some delicious crusty bread and your choice of salad, I went with the caesar which was great! And what did I think of the music? WOW! Just WOW! They had some incredible musicians on stage who absolutely rocked the house down. They threw in some jazzy, spooky, funky tunes; perfect for the evening and honestly some of my favorite type of jazz. What a night! So happy I made it over to the Black cat. I think im throwing it up there as one of my ultimate favorite jazz spots in SF. Can't wait until work sends me back, and ill be right there again.

Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get -- only with what you are expecting to give -- which is everything -- Katharine Hepburn This review was for V-Day 2023. I just realized I never posted this. A set course menu with jazz. The food was actually better than expected, the jazz solid. Only downside was a partially blocked view even though I had reserved a better seat. Still, a lovely evening. Service was on point. Area is problematic at times so be careful.

It's been a while since I've listened to jazz. A friend invited me since Just King Jones is the son of my friend's coworker. We were excited. This is our first time at Black Cat. Parking: We took an Uber because I knew the area and parking would have been a challenge. Service: We were greeted right away and were showed to our table. I made reservations online. Place is cozy and welcoming. Staff are friendly and attentive. Very knowledgeable of the menu. Food: We the the 2 course meal and were extremely happy the food was delicious. I ordered the shrimp and grits. I think I had 4 shrimps. I would have wanted one more . The grits were tasty and just right. My reins had the Petra sole and she said it was delicious and perfectly seasoned. Price: It was a little pricey but since we don't go out often, it was worth it and besides, it was an early birthday treat for me. Venue: It was dark, small and cozy. I recommend checking out the schedule and see giving this place a try. I do highly recommend listening to JustKing Jones. They were awesome.

Dimly lit intellectual vibe, with a variety of live jazz performers scattered throughout the week. There's a bar upstairs, but downstairs is where the action is. You can book your seat ahead of time. For dinner I highly recommend the bbq chicken, grits and greens. Many great cocktails. Great date night

Listened to Domo Branch and his entourage play. Awesome jazz and blues spot. Service was great. The ambience is elegant, romantic, and artsy. I didn't get the food because I am skeptical about eating in the dark. It is a dimly lit spot.

We really enjoyed the Black Cat in San Francisco as it was recommended to us after we booked an evening out with friends. The dinner and music is experienced in the lower level and there was not much going on at the street level when we were there. The dinner they offered was good, better than expected! There were several options to choose from and our entire party was pleased. The jazz was great...the musicians were very talented and they bring in jazz bands from all over (not just local). There was a choice of events the night we went so you have options there too. The only drawback was it is located in a not so great area of the city's Tenderloin so recommend taking a cab, Uber, Lift, etc to drop you off. This is not their fault though, just wanted to share that. Overall, recommend you go to see it and enjoy the ambiance, it's probably one of the best in the city!!

I've been here exactly 5 times and this review is overdue. Keeping it short and sweet: Had a great time at Black Cart Jazz Bar! From date night to girls night out! Great place to be. The stairs to the lower level led to a spacious bar and dining area with strong drinks. Seating close to the stage provided an immersive experience, and the staff was attentive, ensuring excellent service throughout the night. Sat for the dinner and show and was pleasantly surprised at the execution of each dish!! Well done Kitty! Will definitely be back for more live jazz. This place is a gem in the literal- rough SF streets

Do I have to make a dinner reservation to listen to the jazz performance? Or can I just get drinks and still listen to the performance?

Should we buy tickets in advance for the 10pm show?

You don't really need to buy tickets. I always make a reservation on OpenTable to ensure that I have a reserved table. I have seen the place fill up and the only place left to sit is upstairs where you can't see the performance.

High ratings, few reviews, but we were adventurous and decided to try it, glad we did. Ingredients is on a corner, looked relatively new from the outside LED "Open" sign prominent in the window. Once we walked in, however, we entered a different world from what we were expecting. Luxurious mustard seats, lots of tables for four, seating with high gray bench banquettes, reminding me of a 70s tune ("Diamonds in the back..."); retro vibe elegantly done with modern lighting and sconces. Not cheesy by any stretch, but in a neighborhood place you could wear sweats or a suit to eat at. Our waiter was Jackie, an enthusiastic young man who seemed like he wasn't just there to wait on tables. Throughout the evening he was easy to chat with while being knowledgeable about his food he served without being condescending. He made someone unfamiliar with the menu feel new-to-us dishes weren't going to be an experiment. We ordered the beet salad, the 8 ounce hamburger with fries, the mushroom risotto, and on Jackie's recommendation the Nepal BBQ ribs. In the meantime they served us house made brioche buns-warm, soft, delicate and chewy, flaky; reminded me of Texas Roadhouse buns, but far better. Served with a little olive oil and balsamic in a separated dish, you could eat them plain and enjoy the craftsmanship of baked excellence. We wanted more but in retrospect we would've been filled up with brioche and not enjoyed the meal. Tough choice. The roasted beet salad, served with shaved fennel, a beet balsamic jus, and an apple-citrus slaw that was fresh, sweet with hints of citrus offset by the fennel so it wasn't cloyingly sweet. The textures were enjoyable-the softness of the beets with the crunch of the fennel slaw, we anxiously cleaned the plate! Next came the risotto and the burger. What was enjoyable was the mushroom risotto-a refreshing presentation of toothsome Arborio, creamy yet firm, interplaying with a variety of mushrooms that immediately became one of the better risotto we've had, texturally excellent, not one note like most risotto, it came out hot but not searing; deft hands created a concoction that kept us going back for more. The burger was simple, cooked medium, but one of the best we've had in a very long time. We should qualify the burger as a cheeseburger as we were given a choice- bleu cheese or cheddar, we chose the bleu cheese and it was a good choice, just the right amount complimenting the veggies that came with burger. Oh, the fries-skinny, perfectly fried they stayed equally crunchy from first to last, served in a mini fry basket that was cute but it also showed they meant business, these fries were better than that Irish fast food place, and aren't they the iconic standard of French fries? IMO Ingredients is now the new standard. They were served with house made ketchup, excellent with or without. The ribs came last originally accompanied by a Mac and cheese but since we ordered risotto they served the ribs separately with a slaw. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone, but a little more savory than sweet , served with just enough sauce to accompany the ribs without being messy, easy enough to eat using knife and fork, the kicker was a hint of five spice, subtle enough if it's in ypur background, but not an annoyance if it's not. Flavorful, hearty, filling, delicious, We ended our meal with a homemade "apple pie," a creation made of thinly sliced apples, perhaps poached, with cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, along with fresh fruit, and a yummy scoop of "creamy"mango sorbet. Lots of surprising good vibes-no crust, all apple, not heavy; the mix of spices played well with each other; mango sorbet wasn't icy like sorbets tend to be, the fresh fruits added a touch of freshness to the dish that could have been sweet-centric, but not. A delicate yet satisfying end to a delicious meal. We met the chef, Sok, at the end of our meal, who had his culinary training n Kathmandu and expanded his repertoire in his world travels. He definitely knows how to elevate a good meal, and his Nepal and French influences add an understated flair to what he cooks. Sok takes tremendous pride in what he presents to the diner, evidenced by who he hires, and how each dish is presented. Dining in Ingredients is gratifying, from the dining room to the staff to the dishes themselves. More people should give Ingredients a try, a gem of a neighborhood find, a rarity in SF! I could go on and on about the different dishes we tried but the real standout of the night was the pork tenderloin with chorizo and peaches. This is located into the tenderloin, so please be aware that you will have to find your own street parking but parking a garage is preferred. This place has stunning views nonetheless, it's very chill and in a relaxing setting. The music is not overpowering, which is nice enough to have a conversation without having it overly crowded with 50 other people around you. I've definitely been back here a few times to take other friends and family and I will continue to do so. There are also heaters outside when it's very cold, chilly and windy. The venue is…read morebeautiful, especially the spacious outdoor patio, which was perfect since the indoor area is a bit smaller. The DJ was spinning old-school R&B, which created an amazing vibe! The food was pretty good. The fried chicken and deviled eggs were super tasty. I'm rating this 4 stars instead of 5 due to a couple of service issues. First, their bar policy for large groups is frustrating. A guest in our party tried to order a soda at the bar but was turned away because he wasn't physically sitting at the bar counter. For large groups, people should be allowed to open separate bar tabs so they don't have to be looped into the main table bill. It feels unreasonable and cuts into the bartenders' tips. Second, our server wasn't very welcoming. While not openly rude, the cold demeanor made our diverse group feel a bit pre-judged, which was disappointing. We still ended up with a hefty bill and tipped well, but hospitality could definitely be improved. Overall, we had a great time because of the company, music, and food. I'm willing to give it another try to see if the service improves!

I highly recommend a reservation as it does get busy especially on a Friday night! First the atmosphere is adorable. The decorations and ambiance are so beautiful. Lots of windows, plants and the bar is stunning. Service was wonderful! Now the food!!! We got the chilaquiles, French toast and spicy sausage omelet. All were delicious! Just egg is amazing when cooked right! Favs were the chilaquiles and French toast! I recommend sharing so you get a sweet and savory! Will be back for dinner!!!

The seating is spacious and sectioned off rather than one large open dining room, which allows for different arrangements and a nice sense of privacy between groups. The downside is that this layout seems to leave patrons on the right side, behind the wooden partition, nearly forgotten. We were handed our menus and then left alone for almost 15 minutes without anyone circling back to take our order. When we finally did order, the servers brought dishes to the wrong table and couldn't keep track of who had ordered what. That said, the food, atmosphere, and location could easily make up for it, I would consider coming back if I had to return to San Francisco.

The 2nd visit the service was impeccable, everything went exactly as we had hoped. We will be back. We can recommend the scallops and the Salmon, the chicken was very tasty. Also, for the food, I recommend the dips and the fresh pitas, so good. We'll be back just for that. Reminds me of the old Berkeley restaurant years ago, Holy Land (IYKYK). Mmmm. Thanks!

The sandwich comes with a small dressed salad and three tomato halves. It was nice. The potatoes served with the sandwich were roasted but served cold and dry. Like they were left over from the night before. Randy enjoyed his mocha. We shared a very dry, flavorless except for the two small bits of jam in them, "cheese" danish. Definitely skip this $7 item that you could get at a circle k for $1.50 and it would taste fresher. You order when you walk in and someone delivers your order and then you're left to fend for yourself. We were able to locate some ketchup for the potatoes on our own. Nobody ever checked on us. This is the second place on this visit that's charging an extra 5% fee so that their employees can have a living wage and health insurance, which absolutely, every employee should have. With the prices they charge, they should already be able to do that, though. I read an article about this fee with many different names and I would rather pay a bit higher of a price and know the employees were taken care of than be surprised by this fee later. Two sandwich breakfasts, a mocha and a danish on top of tax and their healthy sf fee was $63. Steep for the quality we got. Won't be back.

Cilantro?thyme?) or some arugula, something to balance it out. Would be best to come with someone else (if you have someone to go with you, I didn't) and share more dishes, I think. The marinated artichokes were good, not amazing, but a large portion and pleasant enough. I wish they had more veggies or a salad option. The seats are not comfortable, this is not a place to come and relax with a book. The parklet seating is nicely sheltered from the breeze, but can be noisy. The music, outdoor setting, and service are all good. Flatbread was lovely and soft when hot, hardens to a crispy cracker when it cools. The Woody's sparkling N.A. rosé was a bit flat (flavor wise). I've had better ones (especially for the price). I'd definitely come back with a friend or a date. It was a depressing spot for dining solo, and it would be hard to come here with a bigger group.

The outdoor parklet was the perfect synthesis of indoor and outdoor. I'll definitely be back to try their "cheeky" hour with select discounted bites and drinks.
