I probably had one of the most phenomenal Halloween nights over at The Black Cat! Not only was the name so fitting for the evening, it was my last night in SF and it made my time in the city end with a bang (or meow...) Arrived early for the 9:30pm show and was sat in a beautiful spot at the bar; in perfect view to the stage. First things first, The ambiance was absolutely incredible. There's nothing like walking into a deep, dark, sexy jazz bar. This place had it all: Low lights, lively and friendly crowd, with the best little cozy vibe. The staff here was amazing as well. The hostess and the bartender made me feel right at home. For drinks, I had a paper plane, which was exactly what I needed to start off my evening. Strong and refreshing, just like i like it. For food, I opted for the 2 course dinner. I opted for the steak frites which were perfectly medium rare. This came with some delicious crusty bread and your choice of salad, I went with the caesar which was great! And what did I think of the music? WOW! Just WOW! They had some incredible musicians on stage who absolutely rocked the house down. They threw in some jazzy, spooky, funky tunes; perfect for the evening and honestly some of my favorite type of jazz. What a night! So happy I made it over to the Black cat. I think im throwing it up there as one of my ultimate favorite jazz spots in SF. Can't wait until work sends me back, and ill be right there again.

Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get -- only with what you are expecting to give -- which is everything -- Katharine Hepburn This review was for V-Day 2023. I just realized I never posted this. A set course menu with jazz. The food was actually better than expected, the jazz solid. Only downside was a partially blocked view even though I had reserved a better seat. Still, a lovely evening. Service was on point. Area is problematic at times so be careful.

It's been a while since I've listened to jazz. A friend invited me since Just King Jones is the son of my friend's coworker. We were excited. This is our first time at Black Cat. Parking: We took an Uber because I knew the area and parking would have been a challenge. Service: We were greeted right away and were showed to our table. I made reservations online. Place is cozy and welcoming. Staff are friendly and attentive. Very knowledgeable of the menu. Food: We the the 2 course meal and were extremely happy the food was delicious. I ordered the shrimp and grits. I think I had 4 shrimps. I would have wanted one more . The grits were tasty and just right. My reins had the Petra sole and she said it was delicious and perfectly seasoned. Price: It was a little pricey but since we don't go out often, it was worth it and besides, it was an early birthday treat for me. Venue: It was dark, small and cozy. I recommend checking out the schedule and see giving this place a try. I do highly recommend listening to JustKing Jones. They were awesome.

Dimly lit intellectual vibe, with a variety of live jazz performers scattered throughout the week. There's a bar upstairs, but downstairs is where the action is. You can book your seat ahead of time. For dinner I highly recommend the bbq chicken, grits and greens. Many great cocktails. Great date night

Listened to Domo Branch and his entourage play. Awesome jazz and blues spot. Service was great. The ambience is elegant, romantic, and artsy. I didn't get the food because I am skeptical about eating in the dark. It is a dimly lit spot.

We really enjoyed the Black Cat in San Francisco as it was recommended to us after we booked an evening out with friends. The dinner and music is experienced in the lower level and there was not much going on at the street level when we were there. The dinner they offered was good, better than expected! There were several options to choose from and our entire party was pleased. The jazz was great...the musicians were very talented and they bring in jazz bands from all over (not just local). There was a choice of events the night we went so you have options there too. The only drawback was it is located in a not so great area of the city's Tenderloin so recommend taking a cab, Uber, Lift, etc to drop you off. This is not their fault though, just wanted to share that. Overall, recommend you go to see it and enjoy the ambiance, it's probably one of the best in the city!!

I've been here exactly 5 times and this review is overdue. Keeping it short and sweet: Had a great time at Black Cart Jazz Bar! From date night to girls night out! Great place to be. The stairs to the lower level led to a spacious bar and dining area with strong drinks. Seating close to the stage provided an immersive experience, and the staff was attentive, ensuring excellent service throughout the night. Sat for the dinner and show and was pleasantly surprised at the execution of each dish!! Well done Kitty! Will definitely be back for more live jazz. This place is a gem in the literal- rough SF streets

Do I have to make a dinner reservation to listen to the jazz performance? Or can I just get drinks and still listen to the performance?

I was there less than a month ago. The upstairs bar isn't always staffed due to COVID. Also, you can't really hear the live band from upstairs at all. Normally you pay cover to listen to Jazz without a dinner reservation. With dinner reservation,… Read more

Does the 45pp reservation charge cover the music fee only or does that include the 30min per person for food/drink?

Good question, the reservation site is quite confusing. I chatted with the floor manager about it. Your advance payment is just for the table, dining is separate and ordered in person. The different table prices you see are based on view and… Read more

Is there live music every single night? I'm planning a surprise to bring my boyfriend here and I don't want to disappoint him. Thanks!

Yes, we have live music every night we are open! Please view our live revue calendar at www.blackcatsf.com to see who is playing each night we are open. We look forward to your visit!

Should we buy tickets in advance for the 10pm show?

You don't really need to buy tickets. I always make a reservation on OpenTable to ensure that I have a reserved table. I have seen the place fill up and the only place left to sit is upstairs where you can't see the performance.

Located on Annie St and just a few steps away from Market St in the SOMA/Financial District of San Francisco, this place has been delivering some amazing tunes and vibes in the current form since 2023. Keep in mind that reservations are required here as seating is limited. However, if you arrive in between 5-7pm, they will accept walk-ins. The business hours usually run from 5pm-12am while staying open until 2am from Wednesday through Saturday. Even though this place has only been around since 2023, there is a ton of deep rich history behind it that goes back nearly a century. The original Dawn Club (with completely different ownership) existed in the same Monadnock Building on Market St in the 1930's and 1940's as it was a popular music venue from the Prohibition-era up until the end of WW2. Considering that everything ceased to operate up until 2023, the current ownership did the unthinkable and recreated everything as if you've taken a step back in time to a bygone era. This takes me to the interior layout of this place. There are no words to describe just how much I appreciate what they've done. The dim-lit lighting paired with the gorgeous bar, art-deco styling, swanky leather seating and beautifully-marbled tables really showcases just how well executed everything is. I'm also a huge fan of jazz music as the entire ambiance and environment is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Since we had a 7pm reservation, we were seated towards the front near the stage. Our hostess took our order as I went with a "Mutt's Mix" for myself and a "Grasshopper" for her. As soon as 8pm rolled around, the band "Fog City Swing" arrived on stage. They are a well-known big band ensemble that make several appearances at Dawn Club. The entire vibe and electricity hits perfectly as this is more along the lines of a dark bar that you might experience in New York or Chicago. All in all, "Dawn Club" absolutely exceeded my expectations on all levels. The entire layout, drink selection, and variety of musical guests that play here is definitely up my alley. Therefore, I am giving this place a perfect five-star rating.

If someone doesn't enjoy working with people or providing good customer service, the front desk is probably not the right place for them. Unfortunately, our interaction with her was extremely unpleasant. She ( black womsn wearing scarf and beanie) was rude in her tone, her demeanor, and in the way she communicated not only to me, but also to my elderly aunt. It was honestly disappointing. What made it stand out even more is that we later met another staff member who was passing out buttons for the kids' show. He was warm, welcoming, and excited to talk about membership and ways to support SFJAZZ. That is the kind of experience that makes you proud to support a San Francisco institution. I'm a local and I genuinely want to support organizations like this, but interactions like the one we had at will call make you second-guess whether you want to give your time and money. And if two of us walked away feeling this way, I'm sure we're not the only ones. Again, the performance and the rest of the experience were great this feedback is only about that one staff interaction. I hope management speaks with her, because the front desk sets the tone for the entire visit, and SFJAZZ deserves to be represented with the same warmth and professionalism that the rest of the team showed.
