Tiktok introduced me to the Royal Cuckoo and It was a fun time! Arrived at around 9pm and took a seat at the bar. Super fun and cute inside! I was here on a Saturday and it wasnt too packed and my drink I got was great. As a lover of music, this is the kind if spot, i think id appreciate more of on a weeknight. Being a Saturday night, people naturally wanted to go out and have fun, so for me, it took away from the organ/performer for the evening. But thats absolutely a mistake on my end rather than the venue. I will say thought that from the bartenders to Patrons, folks were super nice here, which made for a great experience. read more

thought the ambiance was nice here! they have indoor seating and an outdoor patio. the lighting is very cozy. they also sometimes have live music. I got the raspberry fizz drink. Very much not spirit-forward, which is how I like my drinks. Honestly felt borderline mocktail, so if you are trying to get buzzed, this would not be a good choice. Tried my friends "green ladybug" drink. That felt like a fully glass of straight alcohol. Would not get that one. read more

Super fun and vibey organ jazz bar!! We went on a Friday night and they were packed. So super busy and barely any place to walk around and move. They have an outdoor smoking area and a lively bar with organ jazz and a singer inside. Drinks are reasonably priced and unique. We got the red margarita which was pretty standard and just as described. Seating is pretty limited and there's a specific section to order at the bar, you can't just go up to the counter. The performers were amazing and kept the party going all night. Overall I'd go back but maybe on a less crowded night! read more

I've been here a few times with friends to check out the live music. The jazz bands do not disappoint but it's quite a small venue and gets packed quick in the evenings. Some of the seating is set up to be comfy inside as you enjoy the music but it can be a bit awkward with people standing around when it's packed. I think next time I go, I'll try the experience on the back patio so I can hear the music from a distance and still enjoy the drinks and light conversations with friends. read more

It got pretty packed once the live music started, so I'd recommend coming a bit earlier. They don't cove charge but tip is recommended. I loved the cozy vibes of the Royal Cuckoo during the holiday season! On a weekend night, my friend and I were able to find bar seating amongst a dense crowd in the indoor portion of the bar. There is also the outside area where many were sitting in a cold SF night. I tried the Piña Colada drink, and while it was smaller than expected, the drink was smooth, creamy, and perfectly balanced. Man, I just love this place. I still haven't stayed late enough for the 8PM organ set, but presumably it doesn't consist of selections from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir hymn book but rather jazz numbers that complement their extensive vinyl collection. They open at 4PM during the week, and I showed up not long afterward since I happened to be walking on Mission. The comfortable vibe hit me right away. It was filled with a lot of vintage items including the requisite antelope head, but it didn't feel excessive. I think simply calling it a dive bar marginalizes what owners Paul Morgan and Debbie Horn truly provide here. My interactions have been mostly with Debbie, and she's the real thing, one of the most genuinely friendly bartenders in the city. And hey, I've been served by all kinds around town, and upon a return visit weeks later, she recalled me and where I was from without hesitation. This may be an obscure shut-in reference, but she reminded me of the effervescent Erin Napier, the host of HGTV's "Home Town", just someone whose smile equates to a warm hug. That's not to say Paul is a social slouch. He was busy trying to discourage a high-as-a-kite urban teen from entering the premises. Another reason not to call this a dive is their specialty cocktail menu which reflects their hard-earned years of respective bartending experience. The house cocktails don't disappoint. I felt like I entered a portal into a different world when I visited for the first time this past weekend. Could not figure out the vibe when first entering. Dark and eclectic at first impression. Brimming with character on every wall and decoration after further observation. And then the music started. I couldn't believe it was real. Albums, and organs, and cocktails, OH MY! What a treat it was for me to visit the Royal Cuckoo on my visit to San Francisco. I had been told to go because I love live music, particularly jazz music. This dive looking bar has a whole organ inside. The night I went, the organist was accompanied by a fantastic saxophone player. (See posted videos). They threw the house down. The royal cuckoo isn't a very big space but it had a cozy feel. I sat at the bar. The bartenders are fantastic. I knew this would be the place to order a classic/vintage drink. I ordered a whiskey sour and it was delicious. The staff was attentive and greeted everyone wanting a drink within a reasonable amount of time. In between band breaks, the bartenders played vinyl records. Their selection of records was massive. The record the bartender chose was a major vibe. There's something about vinyl that makes the music sound so good. And their set up includes old speakers. It made for the perfect cherry in this intimate space. We stumbled upon the Royal Cuckoo by chance and were pleasantly surprised. Lots of character inside, quirky decor including taxidermy at the bar, an old school cash register, dim red(ish) lighting, oldies music and jazz playing through the speakers (ie. Sinatra), vinyl music records stacked on the shelf, just a great ambience overall. Later into the evening, maybe around 8:30pm on a Friday, they had live music, same theme with an organist working his magic, and a female vocalist taking the "stage" as well. By stage, I mean they occupied just a small space next to the bar area and music record shelf. They made it work, a nice intimate feel, fitting for the venue. And the customer service is amazing here. The bartenders and employees are so friendly and welcoming, give great recommendations for beverages, and make good and consistent drinks. I tried the red margarita, and it was delicious, a great mix of flavors and perfect amount of sweetness. We couldn't stay long, but we loved everything about this place, I highly recommend! read more

Love this bar love the music, hate whoever worked door tn, I've always just had my ID checked at the bar so I'm walking in not even thinking this guy on his phone is possibly the door guy bc he's not even paying attention or asking us for ID.... I walk in he decided it's okay to sock me in my arm to "stop" me he's mumbling to mind you I can barely understand him I say oh sorry I didn't realize you were checking IDS bruh doesn't even apologize to me or acknowledge he hit me hard enough for it to hurt got minutes afterwords, pardon but that's so weird to hit girls as a door guy especially when no one is even acting wild I even asked the group are we going in before I started headed in he could have asked instead of touching me... GREAT dive bar in the mission. Perfect for a pre-diner cocktail at Blue plate just a few doors down. I hade their version of a pina colada (but less creamy, and not blended frozen) - It was super duper good (very coconut forward) and I want another one stat!!! - reasonable prices for SF too - only $11 for these hand-crafted cocktails. I appreciated that there was a cute outdoor area behind the bar, pretty enclosed and nice for conversing over a beer without the disorienting darkness + music that plagues many standard bars. Love this bar for a good drink before eating at Blue Plate. On our last visit, I appreciated that the bartender admitted that he didn't know how to make the cocktail I wanted. He googled, and made a textbook version of my fave, the Vieux Carré. I have been other places where they just faked it, with sub standard results. I've been to the Royal Cuckoo a few times. Definitely a neighborhood gem and hole in the wall. They usually have live music on the weekends. They even played outdoors a few times during limited capacity due to covid. There are lots of benches to sit inside. Just a few tables that are usually left dirty so you gotta clean after yourself. My go to bartender is Tye. He's always there on Friday nights and weekends. The owners are really sweet too. The team here really feels like a family. I usually order the red margarita. It's a fuse of pomegranate margarita. You barely taste the alcohol but you can definitely feel it! read more

Royal Cuckoo is a San Francisco institution and a must-visit bar. The decor alone is worth the trip, and it's vintage SF at its best with live music to boot. This is more of a dive bar, so the drinks themselves are poured well, but have cool tastes too. They have a bunch of different cocktails on the menu. I tried some of the cocktails, but the old fashioned they made was just perfect. Everyone at this bar is also really friendly and welcoming. The bartender was so sweet and cool! They were fun to talk to and quick to make our drinks. There's seats at the bar, inside the bar, and they also have a nice patio outside too. Royal Cuckoo manages to be both a very hip bar and a friendly neighborhood bar. They spin really choice vinyl, they have interesting decor, they have craft cocktails, but it's also a place where on a weekend afternoon a guy is at the corner of the bar going through his mail and a couple of people are catching up with the bartender and describing last night's events. There's a nice patio in back. For me the big appeal is the organ. They have a Hammond organ. Various high-quality Bay Area musicians come through at night to play there, and you can hear some fine live music in a setting that is hip yet unpretentious. The family of Lavay Smith (the SF-based singer) owns the place and she, her partner Chris, and other musicians play there. Next door is a place that serves pupusas, carne asada, and other related fare, so it's a good stop for dinner, music, and drinks. read more

Wow. Just got off work and invited a friend but made plans to go elsewhere. It's very hard to get a drink or someone to acknowledge. I noticed I wasn't getting served and others coming to the bar ordering before me. I just asked for a drink and I've been waiting and both bartenders immediately yelled at me across the bar and humiliated me. I understand the industry is rough, I am also in the industry. Never been talked to yet alone yelled like that at an establishment. I ordered an N/A hot apple cider... I guess that also comes with bad mouthing clientele as well. You get better service at the little Mission location on 19th than here. Don't bother with these tired grumpy and rude bartenders. read more

Why is the person at the door so cruel? I was finally ready to go into the bar that I loved pre-pandemic, and she made me feel so uncomfortable for no reason. But hey we all have our moments. I went back a week later assuming it had just been a bad night, and she spoke very crossly after I asked if a table was available. (?!) I then asked what the mask policy was and she said "for you, keep it on at all times." I asked her if I had done something inadvertently to offend her. I can't remember the answer but I felt it was mean for the sake of being mean. Truly bewildering. I'm a kind, respectful person, warm and cheery really, and have worked in the service sector for years. Once my girl arrived we left immediately instead of grinning and bearing it. We spent nearly 2 hours here. During that time a few things got my attention: - There was nobody at the door till 8:30 pm. - We were never asked for our IDs. I am not in my twenties but I thought I look young. - There was live music. Some guy was asking for monetary donations for the musicians. - The drinks did not have much liquor. - On the far left of the bar -- just by the door, there is a small little area with two couches. It literally smells like someone puked there and it was never cleaned. There wasn't much to like about this place; it was crowded, loud and the drinks too expensive (my $12 special margarita tasted like grapefruit with 1/2 oz of tequila). Unless you like puke -- or puke smell -- I recommend you to head somewhere else. read more
