Came to this bar on a night out while visiting SF and was very pleased by the speakeasy vibes, drink selection, and piano bar. I like sweeter and more uncommon drinks and liquors so I was excited to try the Creamsicle (vanilla vodka, orange, triple sec) and Cherry Blossom (black cherry rum, lemon, sparkling wine) martinis. The creamsicle martini was very good, though I would have liked it to be a little creamier instead of mostly orange flavored. The cherry martini, however, was not good at all. It kind of tasted like a black cherry white claw instead of a martini. The taste alone wouldn't have been that much of a problem, but we soon noticed that our drink started to clump up and aggregate. This led to an unpleasant texture and made us unsure of the drink since we didn't think that rum should interact like that with the other ingredients in the cocktail. Though the drink was unfortunate, I was still very happy with the atmosphere and fun of getting to hear people perform at the piano bar. Dim interior with plenty of seating + booths in the first room; the bar had plenty of space to order as well. Service was quick considering the number of orders they had. Their martinis are fantastic: we got the watermelon martini which came with a huge slice of watermelon and the lemon drop martini which had a really nice citrus flavor. There was a live piano player who played + sang lots of classics. Seemed like a lot of the audience were regulars too -- some of them seemed to know the player well and even went up to sing with him as well. We came on a Saturday night and arrived around 9pm which was early enough to get a table in the back room where the performance started a bit later. We were lucky to have come early as it got pretty crowded once the night went on. The crowd is a bit older but we really loved the the old-school feel. We got the espresso martini and watermelon martini. Espresso was good but the watermelon tasted a bit like cough syrup. It wasn't my favorite. Met up a friend today at the table by the bar and not once did they show up since I arrived to take my order, a whole group came right next to us like literally two minutes after my arrival and they were immediately greeted and their orders were taken. I waited about 30 minutes to see if they would come to check up on us, not once did they. So I go up to the bar and order a martini and they look visibly annoyed, still get my martini. I ask to keep it open and they say they can't and that I have to close out otherwise I could just go back to my table and start a tab with a server WHO NEVER ARRIVED. Just very condescending and loopholey. As soon as I rejoin my friend, the server comes back THEN to check on us and asks if we're good. Well obviously so. An hour passes, they come back again and we get another round, ok cool. What gets me is when we close out, they ask if we need anything else, I say water then he goes. When he comes back, he gives my friend the water like if she asked for it, doesn't acknowledge me and thanks HER for her patronage. I just felt really ignored. Is it because I'm brown? Martuni's I have lived in San Francisco since 1995, back when this space was Motor Works, a very different gay bar with a very different vibe. Then came Martuni's, which for years was a gloriously quirky, unapologetically fun gay piano bar that I frequented largely because I lived in the neighborhood and because it was fabulous. Fast forward to 2025. My husband and I stopped in recently and the first thing worth noting is that the place was packed. That part was genuinely great to see. The drinks are still excellent, the piano is still working, and the room still hums with energy. Martuni's remains a San Francisco institution for a reason. But. The gay glory, the unmistakable "oh yes, I'm home" feeling, was not quite there. We found ourselves quietly scanning the room, spotting only faint hints of gay, like trying to tune an old AM radio and wondering if your antenna is broken. Eventually we asked someone who works there if it had turned into a straight bar. The answer was no, but weekends tend to be more straight. And yes. We were absolutely there on Straight Night. To be clear, this is not a complaint about inclusivity. I am glad Martuni's is thriving and welcoming to everyone. Truly. It is just a shift, one that longtime San Franciscans will recognize immediately. The city simply is not the singular gay beacon it once was, and Martuni's reflects that evolution. What you get now is a mixed crowd, a classic piano bar, strong cocktails, and a sultry, old school lounge vibe that still knows how to have fun, just with a different ratio than it used to. We will still come back and will just adjust our expectations and maybe our radars. TL;DR. Still great. Still iconic. Still excellent martinis. Just less gay gasp. read more

Fantastic experience at Martuni's! The energy is so high here; it's really nice seeing a thriving business in the midst of the city slow-down. I can definitely see why it's doing so well too--the drinks are fantastic here and the decor is super cute. It has a vibe to it that's hard to explain, like old-school cool. We got lucky and found two seats at the bar, but large groups may have issues. I got the French 75 and it was well-balanced and easy to drink. I was surprised how strong it actually was though. Of course they make such a reliable, good espresso martini. I also ordered the Creamsicle drink that tasted EXACTLY what it sounds like. I also was a fan of their Lemon Drop Martini! I've been meaning to come here, like, forever. A classic piano bar is frankly hard to come by in this city. Long gone are the days when Doris Day and Rock Hudson could drop by after fantasizing about each other in an open convertible on Riverside Drive. They would come to a place like this after midnight and sing along with the piano chanteuse on "Ya Ya Roly Poly". The interior here consists first of the darkened bar illuminated by lavender lighting under the ice-filled martini glasses. The bigger back room is the nightclub with the pianist playing mellifluously on one side. One by one, people came up the mic and started singing their selections. These were not tone-deaf karaoke drunks. Not by a long shot. They sounded like professional singers auditioning for the next Sondheim revival at the Curran.
