While my most recent visit wasn't as memorable as previous visits Local Edition is still a fantastic place for craft cocktails and live music. I have been a few times and the wonderful times I have had before is what took me back in February on my last visit to the Bay Area. They offer live music in music and old school speak easy vibes. I will say the espresso martini was not as good as I remember from my previous visits as it was too sweet which of course could have been our fault since bartender heard us talking about how my friend liked his drinks sweet. All in all a great night out with friends or even a date spot when live music is on. read more

We had a great night at Local Edition! It was extremely crowded when we arrived, and we were actually a little early for our reservation -- but we only had to wait about 10 minutes, which was impressive given how busy it was. The live jazz was fantastic and really set the mood. The lighting creates that perfect speakeasy vibe, dim but still comfortable, and the overall ambiance makes it such a fun place for a night out in SF. Drink service was fairly quick, even with the crowd. Most of our cocktails were made perfectly and were well-balanced. We did have one Old Fashioned that wasn't great, but everything else hit the mark. Overall, it was a great experience, and we'd definitely come back for the music and atmosphere alone. read more

I stopped by Local Edition on a weekday night with a friend and enjoyed a couple of drinks while we listened to live jazz music. Both drinks were solid but gave different vibes. Cynthia's Pearls, which was a spirit-based drink, was bright and tropical without being overly sweet. The pineapple and lime kept it crisp and refreshing. This was my more preferred drink out of the two that I tried. My friend requested their old fashioned drink, and while it was not my favorite, it was classic and well-executed. Had this place on my list for a long time. Is bigger than I expected, beautifully decorated and it has one of the cleanest restrooms I ever seen in the city. The Rosebud drink was good, I was expecting more grapefruit though. The espresso martini was great. Not too strong. The Dublin Down was also great. My group of five walked in at 8:30 pm on Friday (right when the live music started), and we were able to get a table although towards the back without a direct view of the stage. Inside is quite roomy with standing space by the bar and an area for dancing in front of the stage. We enjoyed our drinks while chatting and listening to the live music. The Ava Gardner caught my eye with the Jasmine tea infused vodka. It was tasty, but I think I would've preferred lighter and refreshing flavors over the coconut milk and ginger. The Local Edition is such a swanky yet lowkey little speakeasy. On Tuesdays, they have a jazz band that plays -- usually a big eight-person band with a rich, immersive sound. But I had the honor and pleasure of seeing them pared down to half-size: a four-piece with just piano, trumpet, bass, and drums. It's quite a laid-back place. I stayed for the band's entire set, and while the bar was relatively hushed, there was definitely conversation in the background -- it is a bar, after all. People are there for the ambiance, to chat, and to share a casual drink with friends, buddies, or co-workers. But I sat up front and sincerely enjoyed the music. I would definitely go again, maybe with my brother or another jazz lover, to see their full eight-piece set. I'd also love to explore more jazz clubs similar to this in the city! Last note: their Ava Gardner drink is so divinely sweet and delicious -- it's giving Southeast Asian inspiration with its jasmine tea-infused vodka, coconut milk, lemon ginger, aromatic bitters, and basil. Don't tell me that's not screaming Southeast Asian! I also tried The Local Edition (the namesake drink) -- honestly, it felt like sipping something crafted for a 40-year-old businessman or lawyer. There are lots of visible places you can grab a drink on Market street in downtown San Francisco. There is place I like to go on the under. This place is stealth. Walking by the Hearst building on Market street there is a place which has great drinks and live music . You could walk by this place and not know there is an underground bar and live music playing inside. Once you walk down the stairs or take the elevator inside the Local Edition it feels like you stepped into a newspaper museum of history. You can see news paper articles from decades ago on the walls of the Local Edition . You could see the significance newspapers played a role in history of San Francisco and the USA. I came for a special event which had an open bar and I decided to try some of the different drinks besides beer and wine ( tried those too). I had the signature drink the Payback and it was tasty and was topped with Presecco. I then had to try a few Ava Gardner's which was refreshing with Jasmine Tea Infused Vodka, Coconut Milk, Lemon, Ginger, Aromatic Bitters, Basil. Then I tried a few Rosebud's which got its namesake from the movie " Citizen Kane" ( believed to be about a fictional character of William Randolph Hearst). The Rosebud has Gin, Lillet Rosé, Lime, Grapefruit, Spiced Pear, Sparkling Wine. It was not too sweet and it went down smooth. This is one of best places in San Francisco to get a drink on the under. It's been... wow 9 years since I've been here! No wait on a Saturday close to midnight. It was still fairly busy, but plenty of seats were open, and we were able to walk straight up to the bar and order. A group of us got drinks, we all tried each other's drinks, and all agreed none of them were great. Came here for Valentine's Day and made a reservation. Thank god we did because we got front row with the best view! It was so refreshing coming here because it feels like you've been transported back into a different time. The performance was so fun to watch. The band really seems to enjoy themselves. I love how there is an open space in-front of the band so people can dance, which people took full advantage of! We stayed for hours until the band was done. I had the best time and we got a reasonably priced bottle of wine too! Our server was so nice because my friend needed a bandaid and our server grabbed one, no hesitation. This will probably be my new go to spot. Would recommend making a reservation on weekends because if you don't, you might end up being stuck all the way in the back with not as nice of a view. read more

Love the interesting historical newspapers decorating the front (it's a bit speakeasy-like, where you go down a narrow staircase to reach the lounge), and the drinks were decent. This is a little gem that is accessible via Bart if you are coming from the East Bay. We got off of Bart and it was only a short walk from the Montgomery Station. If you blink while walking, you may miss it, we did. Finally, after using the GPS, we were able to find this location. The theme is old school newspaper printing and publishing, with the framed editions and manual typerwriters throughout the venue. It is such a great vibe. We heard it would be best to make a reservation, so we did for 6 people. Not a problem. We were there when we were supposed to be seated and the time slot was perfect for enjoying a few beverages. The table was in the middle of everything which made it convenient for getting up and dancing, getting a drink from the bar if you prefer that to waiting for your server and right in the line of sight of the stage. The music was hopping and there were people up on the dance floor spinning and bopping around. We each had 2 drinks and enjoyed the ambiance. The prices were not bad, but I did feel like the glasses were a tad smaller than typical size. Our server was very nice and there was not a long wait from the time we placed our drink orders to having it placed in front of you. This is a cute spot and I hope to be back soon. read more

I had an absolutely amazing time at Local Edition this weekend with a friend. We stopped by early in the night with a reservation and was immediately blown away with how nice the space was. There was plush red booths lining one side, with the full service bar on the other. And because it was December, the holiday decor just made the whole space feel so much more cozy - the wreaths on the walls and the Christmas tree by the stage. Typewriters were perched up on little shelves as decor pieces, and even our menu was in the style of a newspaper. The attention to detail was stunning. I was surprised that they did not offer any food options here (not even little snacks), and only drinks. I ordered one of their craft cocktails, the Ava Gardner, which was probably one the BEST cocktails I have ever had: it was fresh, milky but light at the same time, and I couldn't taste the alcohol at all! We were really lucky this night because we caught a little of GamperDrums FunkJazz's set, which was a total vibe and made me dance in my seat the whole time. I would say the service could be a little slow when they started to get busy (we had to ask for the bill twice), but I appreciated the constant check-ins with our host throughout the night. read more

I came during Christmas time during a happy hour after work. The decor is such a vibe!! There's a big stage for live music, and there was a beautiful Xmas tree on the side. I got turned away from seeing a band at Local Edition because I couldn't prove my age! I have been there many times without being carded, and I never get carded anywhere. Nor do I see a reason to carry such an ID. We do not live in an authoritarian state -- yet! This bar is also iconoclastic in that they charge a sales tax on top of the $8 or so they charge for a beer. Normally, the posted rate is the flat rate in a bar. The music is good, but this policy is looney tunes. It is simply not done in SF, unless you look as if you might be underage. I never get asked for an ID, and it is impossible to understand why they put this insane policy into effect. I hope the owner reads it and takes action. A new manager and set of doormen would be a good start! But maybe that is too much to ask in an age where people can not think for themselves. read more

I had such a nice time here! The vibes of this are immaculate down to all the details. The typewriters, suitcases, and newspapers provide the perfect decor and the dark lighting give everything a dreamy romantic look. The place is deceptively large but that actually works against it because some of the back seats seem like they have no view of the stage at all. Bartenders are all very friendly and knowledgeable. Tried four different drinks on the menu and each had it's own unique flavor. Some, like the under market, had weird flavor combinations that I felt didn't work well together. My favorite was the Dublin down because I'm a sucker for egg white foam in a cocktail and also the different components of the drink gave it a great depth of flavor. They had a fantastic espresso martini even if it still doesn't beat my personal favorite in SF (Persona on sutter street,btw). I made reservations based on recommendations from other reviews but they didn't seem necessary for a random Wednesday night. That being said, it seems like a reservation does get you a better seat. Finally, obviously have to talk about the live music. It's the thing that ties all the different elements of this bar together to form the perfect experience. Nothing else in the world can compare to the vibe of listening to live jazz in a low lit room while sipping on a craft cocktail. It really feels like stepping back in time. read more

Such a unique spot for swing dancing and late night jazz in SF! I love that the local swing dancing community has a strong presence here and that this spot is enjoyed by both experienced dancers and beginners alike! Although beware-- the line gets super long past 8 or 9 pm. We made a reservation ahead of time and received a text notification that our table was ready upon arrival, however when we checked in with the host they told us that no tables were available and that they were working to clear them out. It seemed like at least 5-8 other parties ahead of us were also experiencing the same issue. We decided to grab drinks at the bar while waiting, and danced in the meantime. We did not receive another update from the host that our table was ready until about 2.5 hours later, at which point we had already finished dancing and were ready to leave. Long story short, for a good time I'd recommend just coming for dancing and standing room near the bar-- the waitlist/reservation system for tables just doesn't seem worthwhile. read more
