I'll first start off by saying, I myself would probably give Black Bottle a 3.5 to 4 stars, but here at the Finer Things Club, we believe in a democratic process when it comes to our ratings. Let's begin, shall we? Let me first start by saying I picked Black Bottle for our monthly outing, but forgot to call for a reservation on a Thurs night. I tried, "Don't you know who I am?" to get a table. Since I'm nobody that didn't work and our reservation was for the next available slot at 7:00pm. I admit my first reaction a few years ago, would be to stick out my lip, cross my arms, and stomp my little foot, but I've since outgrown doing that so I went to The Innkeeper down the street for a beer. No problem, it was my fault.
At 7:00, the Finer Things Club reconvened at Black Bottle. Myself and three other ladies were seated right away. We decided on the Broccoli Blaster, Pork Belly and Kimchi, Crispy Fried Chicken and collard greens, a glass of wine and later 2 desserts. Our opinions varied, but we agreed the food in its totality was average to above average and in some cases above above average. The food was not the issue here.
Remember that scene from Frankenstein where all the villagers are wiggin' out and grabbing their pitchforks and torches to go after the monster, that's the scene that almost took place at Black Bottle against our waiter. Generally a forgiving and tender lot, my co-diners were really put off by our waiter's impatience with the speed of our ordering, bad mood and aloof attitude. There was an "I've got better things to do than make your experience at Black Bottle enjoyable" attitude.
For example-"Are you ready to order?" Admittedly, we were still perusing the menu(there are a lot of interesting choices). "Obviously not, so I'll come back". Why not instead, "I can see you're still deciding, I'll give you a few minutes to decide. I'd be happy to answer any questions or give suggestions if you'd like?" Is that so hard?
Example #2-"Are you interested in dessert?" Less than 1 second before anybody can answer-"No, well I'll get your check". Us-"Whoa, whoa...yes, we want dessert".
People call me a looker. I don't mean that as in, "wow, that guy's a looker!" but more like "wow, that guy likes to look at things a lot."
As a frequent patron of Seattle restaurants, a member of the customer service industry, and observer of human behavior, I normally have sympathy for an understaffed crew that causes service to fall short, but this was not the case here. It had more to do with an individual who just didn't want to be at work on this particular day. I would be willing to give this place another shot due to the food, but the rest of the Finer Things Club would say to avoid this place like vampires avoid the sun.
Note: I was kidding about the "Don't you know who I am" tactic. Maybe next time. read more
