I was really excited to try this restaurant. The starter focaccia was excellent and I couldn't wait to try the squid ink spaghetti. The ambiance and vibe were nice for a company lunch. Well, I found a rotten clam in my spaghetti. The clam was closed at first, so I pried it open and found it black, festering, and moldy inside. I told the waiter and his reaction was extremely nonchalant. He said he would tell the chef, but "this happens sometimes" and "we never know what the clams eat." He then told me I could "put it on this plate" that he was taking away - meaning, use my fork I was eating with to do so and contaminate the rest of my dish even further. At this point, I'd lost all my appetite. It wasn't until I'd left the restaurant that I processed how wrong this situation was. I did some research on bad shellfish and found that shellfish food poisoning can cause nausea and diarrhea at best, paralysis and death at worst, and that symptoms can take hours to days to start. I should have taken a picture of the rotten clam, but nevertheless, I'm very disappointed with this experience. The rotten clam was bad, but the reaction (or lack thereof) was infinitely worse. We always wanted to try this place but aren't downtown Seattle that often. They have been in that location for 35 years- that says a lot! We stopped at their beautiful bar for a drink & a small bite while we waited for our friends- the bartender was wonderful- telling us about the restaurant & the history & he'd been there 11years! My husband & I shared the seafood of the day dish that was amazing prawns with zucchini & fennel in a spicy tomato sauce over polenta-yum! Through it all, it remains the destination for some diners. On the day we went, a large party of locals and regulars were having a birthday bash. As much as I enjoy new dining experiences, I also appreciate the old timeless locales which Tulio is with their dark wood furnishings, lower ceilings, and cozy tables. We wisely made a reservation and were seated by the bar with a window. Our server clearly has been with the business for a long time. The first thing he asked was if we have a show at the 5th (Avenue Theater) to ensure we finish on time, which we did. With the big group, he wanted our orders to be ahead of that table. Nice. The Food: Cured Steelhead, $17 - 4.5 Stars Menu: fennel crema, giardiniera, crostini I always ask for recommendations, and this was one of his recommended ones. For the seafood lovers, this is a top choice. The steelhead had excellent cured flavor and not slimy. The sauce is excellent. The only thing odd is 4 pieces of crostini for the 6 pieces of steelhead. They should match. Bread Service, $10 - 5 Stars Menu: house made focaccia, corto olive oil, butter, maldon sea salt, ken's pickles If a restaurant is charging for bread service, then make the bread special and in house like Tulio, not because you bought a loaf from Macrina or Grand Central. Lamb Shank, $39 - 5 Stars Menu: mint, barrel aged feta, creamy polenta, lamb demi This lamb shank is one of their signature dishes and perpetually available. I don't remember the exact cost, but it was about $55. I know fish can be spendy, but this was not worth the money given the small size. Maybe 5 oz before cooking. Despite being reservation laden , the hostess got us a walk in table for dinner - we were staying at a hotel up the street and my wife and I were exhausted from walking along the market all day- the wait staff was accommodating but not in your face - my wife had the Orrichiette ( sausage and tomato asked pasta ) and I had roast chicken w lemon mushroom rice . If you're tossing around the idea of going here the answer is 100% yes. Their menu is small but they more than make up for that in the quality of their food. I was staying in the hotel and ate here for lunch and breakfast. Here are my takeaways. Breakfast: eggs are eggs and bacon is bacon but they showed out with those rosemary potatoes! They were absolutely perfect. Perfectly crispy and perfectly seasoned. I was just sad there wasn't more of them. The coffee they serve is also very good. It's smooth and not the least bit bitter. Lunch: I had the Orecchiette pasta and it blew my socks off. The presentation was elegant and the flavor was so robust. It was absolutely delish. I also had the Budino dessert. We decided to have Sunday Brunch here and it did not exceed its reputation. Restaurant was well lit and spacious. Water served with no ice and looked like dish water . Brunch menu in my opinion was not considered brunch items but overpriced plate options. All drinks were ala carte and overpriced as well. I chose the Tulio breakfast which consisted of two eggs, herb potatoes, bacon or sausage and hard sour dough bread. Service was very slow and they must have had one cook that was overwhelmed considering no one was eating for awhile . Food came out semi warm and just ok. I expected better for the prices. Tulio's was our lunch choice before an afternoon theater performance because it's in easy walking distance of the two largest downtown theaters. I would recommend reservations because even though it was midday in the middle of the week, it was fullish. Our party of three had the papardelle ragu, orchiette and chicken budino. All tasty. Pasta was Al dente. Presentation lovely. Plus a bread plate which was delicious! I loved the little dish of pickles. Saw some kvetches about them in another review. Wrapped up with the olive oil cake for a birthday sweet. I am not a dessert fan but I'll have to say this was tasty! Gladys took good care of our table. I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts regarding today's lunch. While we've had enjoyable dining experiences in the past, this occasion was marked by unexpected shortcomings in service. Arrival and Greeting: There was no hostess present, which meant we received no greeting. After waiting for a few minutes, I decided to take the initiative and locate our reserved room myself. Having dined there before and being the one who organized the lunch, I was familiar with exactly where to go. Upon reaching the upper level, we found our table only equipped with utensils and empty water glasses--there were no place settings to be seen. Once our group sat down, I had to leave the table several times in search of someone to assist us. During one of my trip's downstairs, I encountered a woman who appeared to be an employee. I informed her that our group of 14 was waiting upstairs for lunch service. It felt as though no one was taking any initiative, leaving us in a state of anticipation. I returned downstairs once again and sought help from the bartender this time (I felt bad even having to tell him we needed service upstairs!) After speaking with the bartender, I went back upstairs, where server Guillermo appeared and came to our rescue! The lunch was set up buffet-style, but in another room away from our dining table. Our lunch was supposed to be buffet style and served as a sit down so guests can help themselves. There were assorted sodas over in the side room and where I guess, they expected us to go help ourselves (although I touched the sodas thinking I'll grab what they have and bring it to our table, they weren't even cold and there was no ice in sight. But that wasn't the main issue, it was the set up and the thought that our group was going to go line up in a corner and serve ourselves. Service Challenges: Additionally, there was only one server for our group of fourteen, which made it challenging for him to manage everything effectively. He began by bringing one large bowl of salad and three side garnishes, expecting us to pass the single bowl around the table. We were provided with dinner plates instead of salad plates. I asked if we could have two servings of each item once it was determined I did not want my guests to get up and go to another room to retrieve lunch, so I suggest he bring it to our table with a serving on each end of the table. He stated that it was going to be tough. Given our group size, he seemed unaware of our sit-down buffet arrangement and since it was set up as a 'walk up and get your own food' style, it appeared that everything was set up for just one serving bowl or platter which was not ideal for such a large group. I was intrigued by the reasoning behind the belief that 14 individuals would repeatedly return to fetch their own meals over in another room with minimal space for more than a couple of people at time. A few entrée items were served after the one big bowl of salad was placed on the table, but we noticed that there was no salad dressing available. I had to get up yet again to request dressing before we could even start on the salad, but the main course was on its way out now. The three side condiments that went with the salad were in three separate bowls. No on our end of the table got any of the side condiments unfortunately. Beverages: I took the initiative to get up and pour water for my fellow guests and eventually placed the pitcher on the table when it became clear that the server was overwhelmed. We also weren't offered drinks or asked if we wanted anything beyond what was served until, I asked him to take drink orders after everything was served. Although he was doing his best, our group noticed his struggle, so we opted to stick with water, except for the guest of honor who received a lemonade. Post Meal: Once the food arrived, things began to settle down, but it felt like it was lacking that coffee and tea were not offered after our meal. Only one person received coffee, and it was served black, without cream or sugar, which were located on another table in a different room. When dessert arrived, he brought dessert plates with spoons, but I found it difficult to eat the chocolate cake with just a spoon. We all had a laugh about it as we tried to manage eating the dessert without proper serving utensils. After we finished, I addressed the bill, and the server mentioned that a hostess, manager, and one bartender were out sick. Today's experience was disappointing, and I felt it reflected on my role as the overall event planner. The total cost for the food and service was over $2,000.00. read more

My mom and I stayed at the Vintage hotel the last two nights and departed this morning but not before a very yummy meal from Tulio. We have both been here before and it's been an ok visit but today was just lovely. Gladdys was our server and she was so friendly, quick, and helped me pick out a phenomenal meal. I love savory food and while we were there early for breakfast, their brunch menu also had savory and Gladdys was not wrong with the recommendation of the tagliatelle as I love mussels. The pasta was clearly fresh and so so yummy. It was also my mom's birthday breakfast, as the visit to Seattle was to celebrate her and Gladdys brought out a delicious chocolate mousse and candle for my mom to blow out. The atmosphere of Tulio is welcoming and I enjoyed the decor. Staff here I found to be very friendly and helpful. Tonight I opted for the Halibut on special. For $60 I would expect it to be properly seasoned and flakey. I don't remember having such a tough bland piece of fish in my lifetime. I was given a steak knife to cut it which I thought was interesting until I started to eat my halibut. I've never had a piece I couldn't cut with my fork easily. I don't mind paying for an exceptional meal and this was airport quality at best in my opinion. Moving over to the vegetable side of the plate the potatoes were interesting and not in a good way. Not sure how Tulio has a 4 star rating on Yelp. Perhaps I caught them on an off day. If you're looking for an exceptional dining experience the only thing here worth the visit is the service. During my visit, the host sat us at a small corner table at the bar, but I requested to move us to the dining area. The service was quick and friendly, but it would have been nice if they had introduced themselves and mentioned any specials for the day. Also, the server told me they don't have mocktails but only "juice and soda." We ordered Arugula Salad and Chicken Liver Pate for antipasti, Tagliatelle (Mussels, Guanciale, Shallots) and Bistecca (Grilled New York Strip) for Primi & Secondi, and Olive Oil Cake for Dolci. The only downside is it is pretty small and felt a bit tight and crowded. The focus is on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients and after 32+ years the kitchen continues to meet and exceed expectations. Disclaimer, I live out of town and dine at Trulio 1 to 3 times a year; however, I've been a patron since 2001. I always come back for the gnocchi which imho has been the star of the menu since God created Adam and Eve. Then I realize, the unassuming menu has so much to offer. It was an unpleasant experience. I visited Seattle on a business trip and had dinner at Tulio. When I came back and checked the receipt, I realized they had charged extra dollars for the tip. I called the restaurant to ask about it, and the manager I spoke with said she would look into it and get back to me the following week. It has now been two weeks with no response or follow-up. At this point, I'm left to believe that they intentionally adjusted the tip amount to charge more. It feels very unprofessional and, frankly, disrespectful to customers. read more
