We were there close to closing time and never felt rushed at all. They don't have a designated gluten free menu but we're very helpful in determining what was gluten free. Always a great place to stop in for a bite to eat when we're on the road. It's very similar to your typical Denny's or Shari's Resturaunt but I actually like Black Bear a little more since they have a lot of options and different portion/size meals. I never understand why anyone would have to wait for a table if the restaurant is only a quarter full. Maybe they were down a server or two. The food selection is good, and the taste is consistently good - but you always have to pay for the little extras (like a side of gravy). I still feel like I can't find the *exact* right breakfast that I am looking for without having to alter a menu item. It took a while for a couple of simple breakfasts to arrive (as we had puppies in the car, we were being more time conscious) We'd eat here again, but not if we ran into the same circumstances. read more

Friendly staff and very cute decor. Plus the turkey gobbler was thick and perfectly toasted. The hobo omelet was huge, so much potatoes on the side and biscuit that melts in your mouth. We went here one evening after they first opened. It wasn't busy, but the guy behind the counter was taking cash, cleaning tables, serving food...one man do it all sort of thing. We had to wait for a table to be cleaned and what turned us completely off was when he picked up an absolutely filthy counter dishcloth...food literally fell out of it...and used that to wipe our table off. Then he placed silverware directly on the table without a napkin under. Also, the booth seats were littered with food where he had raked the table off with the dirty cloth. One star for portion sizes, only. We sat down and waited 15 minutes for our drink orders to be taken. 10 minutes later, the drinks came. 10 minutes later our orders were taken and 45 minutes our food came. The hamburgers were good, but then again, it's hard to screw up a bacon cheeseburger. The pot roast and meatloaf were a completely different story. The pot roast was fatty and a shade of grey-brown that I haven't seen in a food before. It was as bland as cardboard, except for the gelatin spew they called gravy. The green beans were definitely out of a can, and again the color was that of a light khaki green you should never see in a food. The meatloaf appeared to have brown jello (seriously!) generously poured over it. Scrape the goop off and you get something that can only be described as fancy feast cat food. And...after tasting it, I would have to say it tastes similar to that, as well. Overall, bad service and worse food made for a disgusting dining experience. read more

Just made my first visit to Black Bear and was very impressed. Portions were very adequate and food was delicious. Wife had hot turkey sandwich (real mashed potatoes, real on-site made gravy and thick, moist, herb roasted turkey). I had classic American cheeseburger, cooked as ordered and very good fries. Great amount of food at a decent price. Some stuff can definitely be split between 2 people. My partner and I have not had bad food there yet. The service is a little hit or miss. There are a couple of people there that either don't know what they're doing as servers/cashiers or are just devoid of personality. Otherwise the atmosphere is comfortable. Never disappointed at the many Black Bear diners we have visited. This location is dog friendly with outdoor seating. Staff were friendly and attentive. Wow! So disappointed. We we're told it would be a 10 minutes, it was 25 min. Then we spent another 30 minutes waiting for a food. That's not the worst of it. Our food showed up cold! The vegetables were burnt and cold! My turkey was extremely salty, it appeared to be Canned Turkey! Yes I said canned turkey! Did I mention it was cold? We complained, witch I usually don't do. They comped one dinner. It was totally not worth our time and money! We will NOT be back. Terrible experience. read more

Very impressive service! Our waitress was attentive and helpful, and also quite funny. I didn't care for the ribs, but it was more preference than the fact that there was something wrong with them. Very typical traditional American break/brunch/lunch fare. They have a large lot so parking shouldn't be too much of an issue but this place does get crowded on the weekends. So be prepared for a bit of a wait at times. Interior reminds local, cabin-nish feel to it. Coffee refills were quick and food was good but not "wow" albeit you get huge portions. This place closes at 8 pm which seems early to me, but Sequim is kind of odd that way. Don't go there close to 8 because you will feel awkward and unwelcome. Really good food though and family friendly. Love their tuna melt and salads. My son had the mini volcano breakfast and he loved it, cleaned his plate. Server was nice but they kept forgetting condiments and drinks and stuff - but I think because his team was expediting food out for him so they could close early. read more

We like coming here for dinner after hiking around the area. Service is friendly and prompt. The food is good, as far as diner food goes. You definitely have to keep that in mind. Diner food is not supposed to be terribly healthy! This is the place that you go for a "gut bomb" lol. Husband had a pasta dish with chicken and he cleared his plate. I had chicken strips and fries. I'm very picky about fries, even in diners! I can really taste when they're previously frozen. These were definitely previously frozen, but still good. I am giving this place five stars for being so awesome to us while trying to deal with an unhappy toddler. Our server was so sweet and forgiving. Unlike some of the other patrons. We ended up taking our lil man outside a few times to cool off until his food came. He practiced his pitching with his fruit, narrowly missing other diners... The staff was on it. I'm sure they saw the terror on my face and made me feel so much better with their pleasantries and smiles. We don't go out to eat often because, well, our kid is 20 months old and sitting still for any length of time is impossible. That's life and these girls get that. Thank you! read more

The food was as expected. Definitely diner style and not high quality but is was as expected. It didn't take long for our party of 5 to get seated. It didn't seem like they were all that busy. The atmosphere is fun and kid friendly and they carry a few local lavender items in their gift area up front, which is good for travelers. Beware of eating food bigger than your head...and this is consistently a challenge at the Black Bear. We first encountered the chain in Northern California and were happy to find one in Sequim.
